[Q] Root Toshiba Excite AT305? - General Questions and Answers

I've searched high and low and haven't found anything on rooting the new Toshiba Excite AT305. Apparently there's an issue finding ADB drivers that will work with it.
I've had mine for a couple days and other than not being able to root I love it.
Has anyone had any luck rooting this tablet? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks!!

Anyone? Please? ;-)

@AspenMan
im about to buy this same tablet today and i have the same doubt... i was googling and i've found this link - http://www.thriveforums.org/forum/toshiba-excite-10/ - an entire forum only about excite 10.... so... maybe... maybe they will have something soon.... i hope very very soon =)
Cheers =)
PS: mind to say a word here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=26307077 ???
PS1: And this tablet comes with what in its box? charger + tablet + manual + what else???

So far I really like the AT305. It does have a little light bleed but it's not that bad on mine, maybe I got lucky.
The only things I really miss about being rooted are AdFree and Titanium backup. Other than that I'm digging this tab.
The only things that came in the box are the USB cable (with Toshiba's proprietary connecter at one end, full size USB on the other) and the Wall USB charger, rated 5v/2000mHa. The user guide is just a quick start guide with the full guide in PDF format on the tablet
I do really like the fact you can charge this tablet off a standard USB port. I got an external battery for it to charge on the go and it's works perfectly (Amazon Link), and a micro USB host cable for it (Amazon Link). Be sure any external storage you're using is formatted to exFAT (or any other FAT formatting), NOT NTFS. It doesn't like NTFS. If you use an SD card formatted to NTSF it will be read only... Took me a while to figure this out...
Now let's hope the devs figure out root soon!!!!!

I happen to know that one developer has adb drivers now working for the at305. He has not posted them yet but I am hoping soon. Keep an eye on the at305 forum listed above. Hopefully we can get these tablets rooted soon.

For those who are interested, we need help. None of the images we make for this sucker work and we don't know why. Google "Excite Root" and find the thread under thriveforums. (I cant post links because my account is new).
We need help, call in the calvalry.

Hey everyone,
I am thinking about the at305.
I have the thrive 101 and is an okay tablet, except for the sound.
How's the video and sound on the 305?
Can you use a micro usb to usb dongle to attach an exfat external drive?
I was also thinking about the at330. again, can an exfat usb external hdd be used?

I received mine today from Costco, it as a 305 model 10" 16gb! There is a little light bleeding but almost unnoticeable.
It is one of the thinnest Tabs in the market, fast as my Nexus 7 and body and display are gorgeous!
The display is very bright and rich in colors and looks way better than my wife's Transformer; it is hard to believe is not an IPS dysplay with same resolution as the Transformer.
I only missing root !!!!!

Got even a better question....
Has anybody gotten the ADB drivers up and running (EVEN ON A $ instead of the # ?) Then, if you get the $, can you try to TEMP-ROOT?
I don't speak for myself here!
I have this:
/ $ uname -a
Linux localhost 2.6.39.4-00017-gc3c5b56 #1 SMP PREEMPT Tue Jul 24 10:14:26 JST 2012 armv7l GNU/Linux

any update on rooting this device? unlocking the bootloader etc.

I'll reply since no one else has. Unfortunately nothing good. Unless someone can hack the boot loader its dead in the water. Toshiba is no help (big surprise) and no one that I know of has hacked or is working on the boot loader. I actually got rid of mine today and am going to a different manufacturer all together. Sorry about the bad news.

well i guess a rooted device is not necessary because most apps are cracked, and i don't like using roms so i guess my tab will do. gota love open source os's.

Well, since Toshiba is making our lives so hard with a locked boot loader I am returning my 305.
It is an ok hardware, but after some comparison with a Transformer and a Nexus 7, the display has light bleed all over, browsing is frustrating, very slow and freezes (stock browser or Chrome) and Wi-Fi signal reception is half of TF101 or N7. (WiFi Analyzer app used to compare)
Custom roms could help or fix it but I won't risk my money and loose the returning period if Toshiba is pulling to the opposite way.
I will just buy an Asus quad or even Nexus10 as both have unlocked boot loaders and great dev support..

Original Impression - Is this for real?

I bought this Gtablet when my wife and I were out doing last minute Christmas shopping on Friday afternoon. No actual live unit on display or available at Sears so bought one based on hope. My first impressions were very mixed. It was painfully slow when I first booted it up while waiting for my wife who had gone into another store and I waited for her in the car (plugged in using inverter we carry with us). Later when we got home it downloaded the update and that helped the speed issue (but still sluggish) but I've run into all kinds of issues that have me ready to return this thing.
First thing I noticed is the number of times that apps force close on the GT including the browser built into the unit. That is about to drive me nuts but I discovered another even more major issue - for me. I planned to use this device to log into our webmail server when I'm travelling in order to get my mail. I can log into the webmail and I can bring up the mail but when I open a piece of email I cannot scroll the screen to read the entire email. I also have a Moto DX and I can read my email via web just fine on that (don't like it because of the small screen and keyboard). So, why does my DX work fine with our webmail client and the GT not work? I am clueless and ticked off.
I was going to return it today but my wife wants me to hold off and call Viewsonic support but I have my doubts that they will be of much help. So, I'm wondering if putting up a custom ROM might help because of using a different kernel?
I have a couple of weeks to return this but I want it either working or gone so I have a proposal. I'm new to Android and don't want to take the chance of bricking this and losing my money and I need this done quickly in order to make a decision. I"m willing to pay a modest fee for someone "KNOWLEDGEABLE" to possiby teamviewer into one of my machines to to root/rom this unit. There would absolutely have to be a return to stock method in case the new rom doesn't work either.
I have a Win 7 Ultimate 64 bit machine, Win 7 Prof. 64 bit and a Win XP 32 bit machine available to use. In reading through a number of threads here it seems that various iterations of Windows have issues with the drivers for this. You can PM me here.

Unless you mess around with the bootloader, you cant really brick it. Nobody has yet, and I doubt you would be the first.
Also I reccomend this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=885940
It is like A lite eversoin of TNT lite. It speeds it upi while keeping it stockish.
Many of us understand your experience. Most of us acknowledge that the first software was not what it should have been.
I have a modded machine which is super. I have an OTA 3389 tablet which is more than acceptable.
From your comments, it sounds to me like your plan to return is the best course of action.
The G-Tablet can be a super machine, but not without some interest in working with and improving it on your part.
Sorry this is not better news. Maybe someone else will respond with a different idea.

Yep, just check the dev forum for instructions on installing new custom firmware. I'd also recommend making sure that you install clockwork mod 0.8 to ease backup/restores.
...OTOH from what I've heard is that the new stock fw 3389 is quite a bit better than what it ships with. And from there you can add a few minor updates, rooting, maybe the performance pack, sideload some apps and possibly the market "fix" which might be good enough for you, but even then I'd really have to recommend installing clockwork mod simply for the ease of making an image of a nicely working modified system and then being able to restore that if something messes it up...
Tablet is really nice, stable, and fast once properly setup and it's not really too hard to do any of the above IF you FOLLOW the instructions and READ them ENTIRELY and the caveats BEFOREHAND.
Really it's almost plug and play...

Here's a trick that works for me: if I zoom in a little on the webmail page that I cannot scroll, after the zooming in I am able to scroll to view the entire email.
I guess that soon you'll find the lack of Copy/Paste. Apple was run out of town for this and Windows Phone 7 too. At least with the G Tablet the lack of Copy/Paste seems to be limited to the stock apps.

Thanks John for that suggestion!! It worked and I can read my email from the G. That makes me happy.
Now for a new issue, I formatted a 16gig SD (FAT32) and put that in, the unit says that it knows that it is there but when I connect the unit using the USB cable to my Win 7 (64) machine its finds the machine, I tell it to activate USB transfer mode but I don't see SD2 in there. I wanted to transfer a pile of music onto it but can't do that since I can't see it. I tried transferring the music directly to the sd and then putting it into the G but when I do that it doesn't find anything.
I didn't really find anything on point in searching so if I'm missing that please point me to the thread.
I think I will go ahead and work with this. I've used and moded Win Mobile phones for the last ten years but am new to Android.
The offer for help still stands if anyone wants to take advantage and I would like to use it as a learning experience as I get into Android.
Oh yeah, thanks to all for the super fast responses. That is really appreciated. Even though it only shows that I have 5 or six posts here that isn't quite accurate. Many years ago when this site first opened I found it because I was using XDA phones but those were all WinMO at the time. I drifted away for a long time and when I came back now I am a new member again here. No longer a WinMo user and I really don't like Windows Phone 7 so I bought a Moto DX and love the phone, got my wife an HTC Incredible (she gave up her iPhone for that and that took a LOT of convincing on my part) but I am pretty much really happy with the Android OS and where it seesm to be going.
What I do love about the G is the size, the Galaxy Tab is just too small and the 800 horizontal resolution is too small so when I found a 10" tablet with 1024 and only $379.95 it sounded like a great deal. The screen angle is a ***** but I can live with that but I am sorely missing the Market (GMarket is sad). Looking forward to getting this machine rooted and rom'ed and up and running like it should be.

Install the latest update and do a factory restore inside the security section of settings.
Then if you want install the tnt enhancement pack from the device section. Don't worry about returning to stock because they don't even open the box when you return or exchange. If they did, they would have no idea what they would be looking at.

You should be able to see the microsd on the Gtab using, for example, ES File explorer. It'll be at /sdcard2.
As for seeing /sdcard2 from your pc, I thought I saw a post saying that if you have winamp installed on the gtab, it has an option for mounting sdcard2, and when that's enabled you can see /sdcard2. Haven't tried that myself.

Ahead of the game.
Hi racedog, actually I think you are ahead of the game. You seem to have made a lot of progress if you bought this Christmas eve.
How did you get it to run in the parking lot of the mall on Christmas eve? Even with a power inverter for power, hoe did you get a WiFi connection?
So far my G Tablet is stock and I am over-all happy with it. However, after Viewsonics post that they won't be providing any support for swapping the LCD screen, I feel they are missing the point. Their post said they would be anouncing some new products soon (my guess is at CES right after the first of the year).
I might end up taking my G Tablet back to Sears and waiting for the newer, more powerful and maybe more promising second generation tablets I am sure are to come at CES.
This tablet has been fun and I may keep it, but, I would really like to know the price points on the new models at CES.
Sucks out of the box.
Erase it and start over.
Load Clockwork Recovery Mod first! Put the update.zip on the sdcard, don't worry about the external SD method.
Once you have that boot mod, it's next to impossible to screw it up.
Flash that then get TNT lite 3.1.0 plus the supplement
Make sure you format the SDCARD using the advanced menu 2048 and 0 swap r it will crash on ya.
Do the full market fix. Download Dolphin HD and you will have a very usable tablet.

I will be doing the clockwork mod and putting on a new rom. The question is about formatting the card. You mention above used "advanced menu 2048", I don't know where I would find that on android on the G, or are you referring to something else?
I didn't get it connected while in the car, I just had it plugged in so that I could take a look at it and start putting a charge on it. I didn't connect until I got home. However, I DID try connecting it in the car using my Moto DX with wireless tether. The dx showed that it was running but the G never found the signal from the phone. It did see a few other secured wifi connections but it didn't see the phone. I have no idea whether this was because I don't have wifi tethering setup correctly on the DX or what the deal is but I figured I would work with that later.
I don't really care if I have to tether via usb with the phone but wifi is a lot cleaner and easier if possible. I know that easy tether and pdanet are out there but I haven't checked to see if they have an android client yet, I've only used them on my Win 7 netbook.

I found that the stock rom cannot use ad-hoc networks. I had to use the hack for the 3G Hotspot app on the DX to get it working on the Gtab. Once I upgraded to TnT lite than I was able to use Wireless Tether and stopped getting all the drops and reconnects too.
I really think that you will be happy with this as soon as you mod it with what's here in this community. I have only been here for less than a week and have found answers to all my questions. Good luck.

I appreciate the offer but because of the holidays I won't be able to take you up on it until probably Tuesday, maybe tomorrow Monday if I get REALLY lucky. I going to be trying to do as much as I can myself until them.
I wondered if the problem might be that the stock rom did not recognize ad hoc networks because I looked for the option to select it and it was not there. Thanks for that info.
R
Forgot, the winamp solution didn't work. I selected the mount option in winamp but it did nothing. I will get back to this issue once I get the greater issue of the rom and wifi connect to my phone fixed. Those are the real biggies that need fixing first.
R
Thanks to rothnic this new G has CWM installed and tnt like running on it along with Market and other apps that I've downloaded from it. What a huge difference this makes, my constant FC's seem to have stopped happening and I am now very happy with this unit. What a world of difference.
The screen is still a major issue but I can live with it (for now, will keep watching the screen swapping thread) but the device is fast, functional and completely usable whereas 24 hours ago I was set to return it to Sears but my wife talked me out of that and to try fixing it.
Again, special thanks to rothnic for all the "above and beyond" help and patience and also to all of the Gtab community here for the help and suggestions.

Yarvik 7" Tablet?

I cant see a great deal about this Tablet on here asides from one thread asking for a dedicated forum to be created on XDA which as far as i can see hasn't be done yet, i got an email....
http://www.komplett.ie/Komplett/pro...TAB210_v2_4GB_Android_2_1/TAB210/default.aspx
and immediately the price struck me as being incredibly cheap for a Tablet especially in rip off, recession hit Ireland where everything is expensive , ive never heard of Yarvik before a search on Google leads me to believe they are a Dutch company, i realise this Tablet cant compare with the Motorola Xoom's,etc of the Tablet world but the specs for this price look pretty good to me and for those on a budget this would be ideal but the only reviews i can find for this are on YouTube in Dutch language i think.
Does anyone have one of these Tablets and if so can you give me the lowdown, can you flash Honeycomb onto it and hack/root it,etc, etc.
cheers
Anyone at all?
I do not have one but it looks like a repackage of one of the other tablets. Right now, you can do better that that unit for about the same amount of money. If it were me, I would look at the color nook and go that route. The unit has support and it does not have a locked boot loader so you can do anything to it. It is about 130 quid, but retails @ 155 +/- I have one and did look at all the cheapo off brands but looking into it further I went with the Color nook. Glad I did, keeps my flashing/modding addiction fed...and happy .......
Let me preface this by saying I'm about as tech-savvy as Betty White, but I *am* dutch, a translator, and have been looking to buy one of these myself, so let me just recap what I've gleaned from the dutch reviews and forums I've found so far:
-As a rule folks seem to be pretty happy with their purchase. It won't blow you away, but it does a very decent job for its price range.
-I'm not sure about Honeycomb, but folks *have* successfully replaced it with Froyo and there seems to be a fairly active community hell bent on forcing it to do things it was previously unable to do.
-Android Market is not included and will not install properly (although there are plenty of alternative sources and manual installation of apps to make up for that). It *will* install and run if the device runs Froyo, but that comes with its own downsides (reportedly the computer can no longer recognize the device's microSD card when connected, ie you can't browse its contents although it still works on the tablet)
-Youtube won't work via browser but will run on the youtube app
-apparently the logo/button labels/sticker on the device fade very quickly
-a fairly common issue seems to be that the device sometimes refuses to turn on (even though the battery still holds a charge) until connected to the charger again
-the wifi occasionally vanishes (which seems to require nothing more complicated than a reboot to fix)
-a few folks have mentioned the device refusing to start up and reporting a fatal error, but this magically fixes itself after a few hours of waiting and proceeds to work like nothing happened.
That's about all I know so far, hope it helps
Oh and P.S. the likely culprit for the device's not turning back on without being hooked up to a power source is a battery management app, removing this seems to fix that problem for some, and a few people report a strange glitch in which the device reverts its date back to 1970 each time it's turned off.
Thanks for the response, sounds interesting, theres someone on eBay Ireland selling this tablet for €149 when i sent them this Komplett link they responded saying they were aware of that and Komplett are making a loss on this strange response as it doesn't make sense for a retailer to "make a loss"
Anyway for this price im sorely tempted until such time i can afford as ASUS EEE Transformer or Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.V or similar tablet with Android.
Today Froyo launched a new ROM.
Android 2.2 V3 with working market.
Any developments
Yarvik have now released a 8 inch version, is it any use?
Did anyone manage to get anywhere with flashing or modifying the 7 inch model?

Not too sure.
However I just wanted to say the Yarvik 275 is a awsome device, its already unlocked. So No rooting needed...excellent!
I have the tab07-485.....I would love to root it but everything I've tried doesn't work. Quad core 1.5 GHz and I only paid 129.99€.
Good little machine.

I don't recommend yarvik tablets. My friend had one and he always complained about slowly work of this device.

I bought 4 of these Tablets for my kiddoes for Christmas, and i must say these are really good..... the interface is laggy but if you replace the Launcher it helps... i have rooted it with SuperOneClick and it is sticking! now need to put CWM recovery and some custom roms and this thing will rock! i will post the recovery image here in a few..... warning it is in Chinese so good luck because i havnt tried it yet!...
here is the recovery files.. it works because i just tried it...
i offer no tech support and i am not responsible it you brick your Tablet, your wife or girlfriend leaves you or the world ends.... but i will help as much as i can...

Nice!! with the help of messinatyler we can now have ICS before it is released.using the MOMO9 ICS firmware and a work around for the capacitive buttons not working this is really rocking.. since most of the new releases of ICS from China are rooted at the factory just install the super user app from market and all is good.... Much simpler that using any rooting tools....
here is his link to the instructions, Mods if i am in the wrong just tell me and i will remove the link.

im actually looking at buying one of these, how the build quality?
I am really interested in this too, please respond asap
i just got this email from pandawill.
"Hi,Dear friend,
Yes,Our item LY-F1,F4S,F528 will get an android 4.0 version,We have already made trial order for these items. But the mass production will do after Chinese New Year"
it actually is real good... the interface and drawer is laggy but i installed ICS launcher and it is a little faster... games run smooth and netflix runs with no hiccups... as soon as i figure out the bloat that needs removed it should run smoother... it isn't built like the M009S resistive tablets, this feels alot better in the hands.. my kiddoes love it and i am amazed at the performance and feel..
and for 100 bucks i cannot complain one bit... but it took me about a month to get them, i ordered 4 of them...... i do not like the customer service... but oh well...
i hope ICS comes this month, that would be sweet... i will upload the stock firmware and install files translated... not that great on the instructions but i am not going to flash for the hell of it... i will wait for one of the kiddoes to mess it up... hell i even thought of buying 10 of them, rooting and selling them locally for a sweet profit... lol
you think dropbox will be good enough for you guys?

Could you describe how laggy the launcher is? Maybe you could screen-record some footage of it? I'd be pretty interested in that. Also, an android device for like 100 bucks sounds like sweet candy to me.

Lost Root
I tried to run this firmware and the one from the products website and neither one of the firmware loading programs "both are the same" will load the usb drivers in order to link and load the firmware. Also in the instructions it says to press the reset button in the pin hole in the bottom of the tablet to prompt the computer to ask for the usb drivers, which does nothing in my case so I removed the back cover to find a different reset button that works that is directly on the board, but the drivers will not install. Any help would be much appreciated. The reason for wanting to reload the firmware is because I did a factory reset and lost root, so if someone can tell me how to gain root access back and or run the factory firmware I would greatly appreciate it. By the way I had to run this software in compatibility mode for windows 95 for it to run on my XP machine.
i am running it on win 7 64bit... the key and the image have to be in the same directory as the program.. push in reset and then plug in the usb cable (the one shipped with the tablet) then you can remove the reset thing.... then it starts loading the rom.... the usb cable i was using wouldnt work... until i just randomly used the one provided... then everything worked,,, who knows...
and root. i used super oneclick and make sure the screen doesnt go to sleep... or it will hang... that worked for me...
For some reason I can't get the drivers for this tablet on the recovery file to install. Is there any way you can send me the ones that you use? In device manager I have two drivers that need to be updated when I plug my device in. First one is "android" the second one is "VID_1f3a_PID_efe8". Any help with this would be greatly appreciated as I can't run this recovery firmware nor can I use super one click as adb shell does not recognize my device because of not having the correct drivers for it.
ok when i get home i will look for the drivers... i am bound to have them on my windows box....
That would be awesome and much appreciated. I want to get this thing up and running on adb so I can push a custom recovery and maybe even cyanogen mod as well.
where did you get CM? and does it work?
i cant find the drivers? unless it is the HTC sync software that installed the base drivers... that is the only thing i can think of, unless i actually used the drivers that came with it. which can be a distinct possibility....
I found out how to do it from another site that told me how to root it. It still won't connect to the computer like it's suppose, it only shows up as drives and won't pick up in adb shell. I found cm in another forum I was looking at, the only thing that i'm worried about is there is several things not working with this rom, so I think I'll wait till someone gets a clean running version before I run it. Next thing I would like to do is install a custom recovery.
if i knew how to extract and inject parts to the image file i could come up with a custom rom... i will have to study it...
Hi, I have 2 questions about this device I am about to order.
First one is about the battery life. Some sites indicate 3000, 3500 and 4000 mA with 5 hours working time. As I intend to use this tablet on plane I really expect at least 6 hours of video playback. Would you be kind enough to run a test on this point?
The novo7 advanced with a very similar hardware lasts 8 hours.
The second question is about its screen. It is given as an IPS technology which should have nice viewing angles (much better than the TFT). Can you confirm that the screen is really good?
Thank so much for your feedback.

Nextbook Premium 9

Is there any hope for rooting the Nextbook Premium 9?
I have a new Nextbook Premium 9, and it has been limited very tightly by Efun, and I cannot find where anyone that has posted on the Internet has managed to root it. The problem is the tight memory limitations (kills me having that much free space on the device and no access to it).
I have done all that I know to do: add a 32gb micro-sdcard, and used ADB to install some stubborn apks, and set the preferred target of installations and data to the sdcard. I moved everything over that can be moved (it has Android 2.3.1). I cannot fit the apps that I really need all at the same time. I can uninstall and reinstall from the backups on the card... a pain, and it limits its usefulness.
Not having Market is a pain, but I can live with that with help from Amazon and others. But it doesn't do me a lot of good as tightly locked down as it is. I have an Onda VX610W coming (if DHL ever decides to move it out of Hong Kong to me) with ICS already installed, but its too small for what I am using the NextbookP9 to do. I need the Nextbook for my presentations. It has the larger screen, and I just need it.
Please, is there anyone who can help me or who can point me in the right direction. I need help with this one. Thanks in advance.
Jim aka FireStorm
Simular situation. A friend tried to root his with the 8p's root. While it worked the touchscreen doesnt work.
So how do I go about figuring out what driver I should compile and throw in the image?
I am still looking for a way to root the Nextbook Premium 9
The Nextbook Premium series are rebranded Kohotech Tablets, and I think I am about to dive into the nightmare of trying to get technical support from a Chinese company. Efun is 'less than' helpful, and the response I got to the request for help left me gritting my teeth. They are selling the new 10 inch Kohotech that carries Android 4 ICS. This is done before they fulfill their promise to upgrade the other Premiums to ICS. That would help, but not solve the memory problems.
I bought the Onda VX610W I mentioned, and even though the Nextbook has a superior resolution than the Onda and a camera, the Onda flies circles around it in performance. It came pre-rooted from the company I bought it from.
The Onda has ICS and the Nextbook Gingerbread, and the processor of the Onda is an Allwinner A10 (faster than I expected). The Onda came with 8gb internal memory (I have a 32gb micro-sdcard due here tomorrow), and the Nextbook came with 4gb and has an external 32gb sdcard. But the majority of the Nextbook's internal memory is untouched, with no way to move anything over to ROM without rooting. When you see the performance side by side, the difference kind of hurts when you consider what is in the Nextbook.
I think though, most of the operational difference has to do with the fact that the Nextbook is so walled up that it is difficult to access its memory and other parts of its hardware (having difficulties using its magnetometer). It just doesn't have enough memory to function well, and most of it just sits there idle.
I have a 32gb micro-sdcard in it, and have used the Android Debugger to have it default to moving a lot of the apps to the sdcard instead of internal memory when installed. It helps, but it is continually slowing or locking on operations that should not bottleneck it (doesn't matter if they are in internal memory or the external sdcard). I have to push the reset at least twice per day. What I am doing on it should give it no great grief, but it does. The Onda makes the problems with the Nextbook all the more obvious. The problem is that the screen on the Onda is going to finish making me blind I think. I need the Nextbook. I don't really want to have to consider this a wasted tablet.
I understand from other discussions that the Premium 9 is very brick-resistant. Its a good thing, because I am ready to experiment. If I just want to watch a movie, its okay... but if I try to really use it, it works about 1/4 of the time. It has good hardware, but it is just so walled up. Nooks are apparently easier to root than these.
If anyone can help, I would really, really appreciate it.

I have a rooted android running on the 9P ... just need touchscreen drivers for it
When you get it running... touchscreen and all, then please contact me again. I need the help. I have run into a glitch on the Onda and it is consuming my time right now... trying to avoid reflashing it, but it seems the best option. I can't keep my little hands off of things when they are working just fine it seems... always trying to find out what can work better. Its a life-long trend, and at this point it seems kind of useless to try and stop.
Anyway, whenever I find out why I have wifi connectivity and no network interface on the Onda, I am going to switch my focus back to the Nextbook. It is actually running better than it has run before because I unloaded a lot of nice apps to give it more breathing room. But it kind of sacrificed the purpose to which I got it. There is no balanced compromise with that one... I have to root it when it is possible, to free up memory and maybe to upgrade past Gingerbread. They are offering the new 10 inch tablet with ICS installed right now. I checked with Kohotech, and there is almost no difference in the Nextbook 9 and 10... even more alike than the 8 and 9, but ICS changes it a lot.
I have a device running 2.1, 2.3 and 4.0, and let me tell you... despite the obvious similarities of them all being Android, the 4.0 does some neat things the others just can't, and it is smoother.
Got to start with rooting the thing, though.
If you get the screen working, then I would like to hear more about it... thanks.
UPDATE: For some reason, the permissions on this page suddenly would not let me post a reply, which I really need to do. Finless on Freaktab.com has produced a working custom rooted rom for the NEXTBOOK PREMIUM 9. He also included the original stock rom in case of emergencies. I have not tried it, but according to others, it works. I just finished downloading the files and will try it tomorrow after a nap.
I request permission to post a new reply in this thread. If you will let me, I will post a link to the thread found on Freaktabs that has the solution. I will first try out the ROM myself though. I was about to sell this thing to a friend in frustration.
It has such a beautiful display, I think I'll keep it with the 1gb USER APP space and access to Google Play that he gave it. He said he could do more, but 1 gb will make the thing workable... especially since he got rid of the bloatware bogging it down. But there is hope for the Premium9 users now. I sent tech support at Nextbook an inquiry about upgrades to ICS as there was some real indication of an upgrade. They said no plans were in the works for upgrading the very bogged down unrooted Gingerbread ROM it comes with. GET THIS: they suggested that I buy one of their "new" series of tablets (like... 5 months after the Premiums hit the market) instead. Hey, just forget the $200 or so dollar investment and buy a newer one with ICS from us... also unrooted. No thank you. I have an Archos on the way and own an Onda. I don't think I want another unrooted bogged down tablet from Nextbook after just getting this one. Except for having 4gb instead of 8gb memory, the hardware in the thing is pretty sound. But it was the locked down rom that made it a misery to use. If it works out, I will post the results.

Any news regarding this Nextbook Premium 9 root + market? I will receive one this week but... it seems that I will regret having it...
It would be awsome if some dev put his hands on one...
I also own a Next9P and also would like option of rooting this device... Are there any devs. mildly interested in working on this... I have some limited funds if it would help.

Me too please....
Just tring to keep this topic alive as I would like to see developement on this platform myself. I got my hands one one of these lately.
I have managed to get a rom dump of the Nextbook Next9 NXM908HC
The romdump (done through adb) reported successful dump all exept config.gz where I wound up with 0 bytes. I read over there that the custom rom for the Next8p runs on the 9p but drivers are wrong for the digitizer on the 9p.
Here is a link for the dump on the Next9 NXM908HC if there are any takers for making a custom rom out of it.
http://isurf2.com/droidwork/next9/
A cyanogenmod7 version for it would be much appreciated, but I wont hold my breath.
--Brink
thanks for the dump. I will see what I can do over the next week.
If someone knows how to root...
If someone knew how to root this tablet maybe I could get a dump with the config.gz intact.
For those looking for rooted nextbook9
Head on over to freaktab.com. A fella that goes by Finless (administrator) AKA Bob has done us all a great service by putting together a rooted, debloated nextbook9 ROM.
I have tested it on my nextbook9 and found that it works.
BTW: When he says debloated he means it. This is positively the most stripped down ROM I have ever seen and I've been flashing custom builds since the windows mobile6 days.
If you found this information useful, don't forget to click the thanks button.
--Brink
---------- Post added at 10:33 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:06 PM ----------
Inside the custom rom found on that page at freaktab.com look for app injector. This takes care of the too stripped down to be usefull. With that you can add the market (Play Store) gapps and the other apps that come with the stock rom.
--Brink
I tried the ROM from Freaktab and it worked great. My 9P is rooted, I have the full android market. The ROM utilizes more memory, boots faster, and seems to run apps faster. What more can you ask for?!
So go to the link posted by Brinkley... Oh and BTW, thanks Brinkley, I followed the link from your post and that is why my P9 is now rooted.
Cheers, TooSlow
the freaktab rom is ginger not ics is there a root/debloat rom for ics ?
I have the Nextbook P10SE. I just flashed a few different ROMS for it, including a JB rom. only problem is, inverted screen and touch.
which of course renders it useless. Finless rom has the touch correct, but the image is rotated 180 degrees.
the JB rom found here on XDA (look for Rockchip ROM) has the screen oriented correctly but the touch is rotated 180 degrees
sigh.
try kingo root, that software does root almost every device that i know of. i have been there with a device that is unknown or limited and you cant find any thing at all, thats why i start to build my own stuff. Try kingo root that would be first step and then cwm .

I'm looking for a specific device rom. Scoured the net to no avail thus far. I have a 7" Chromo Inc Tablet. Board details are as follows: ForFun, A13, Q88DB v1.2. Realtek sound 8188 chip, not sure about screen or anything else. Ive tried about 30 different roms with both phoenixcard and livesuit. Using livesuit, only 1 image was actually able to be flashed but didnt fully boot. Phoneix card in product mode all fail with the roms. Using the startup option I am able to see boot screens but never anything more. You guys are my last hope b4 i just toss this lil tablet. Already spent a whole day getting this far and with no working rom in sight, I'm about to give up. Thanks much
Update: I even went as far as sending an E-mail to Chromo Inc and after a week finally got a response asking for invoice or proof of purchase. The tablet was given to me not working so of course i have nothing of the sort. I found it kind of silly for a no-name chinese company that makes cheap clone tablets to be bothering me over such a trivial thing. The tablet brand new was only $50 and if I was so inclined could find another one for $25 probably. So I'm thinking that route is a waste of time. I'm already tempted to just toss it but I figured it would be a nice starter tablet for my 10yr old
