I've checked every site i could find on this phone and they all indicate that it has 512 MB of ram. I have a question as to whether this is true, particularly because on every rom i have ever tried, I've only been able to get it up to about 280 combined with free ram and used. Is the RAM partition different than the epic 4g because on that phone, which is a variant of the same Galaxy S model, I used to have about 350 to 375 MB free
Yes.

The Samsung Galaxy S 4G was built specifically for Tmo. It shares some similarities but for the most part it is a very different phone then any similar phones.

Yes. The phone has 512mb of space. Go to manage apps > all and add the two numbers at the bottom together. They should be close to 512. Right now mine added equal 509MB. Close enough for me.

Ahh, I remember having a computer that was only 24Mhz (actually, I owned computers slower) ... So they gave us 1Ghz, and then crammed in my old 24Mhz computer for nostalgia
(This was back in the day when computer still had a TURBO button, that functioned - the most mis-named button in the history of computing, since everyone kept it on, it should have more been a 'slow down' button for when you turned it off).

I remember on the 386DX33 and then the the boost would go to a 386DX2-66...or was that a chip upgrade...I'm fuzzy. Packard Bell...486DX66 was $4,000 Circuit City a long time ago. It came with tons of CDs, games, and Mavis Beacon Teaching Typing and something about Carmen San Diego...
Back on topic...for you CS Majors and Engineers out there.... 1024 Bytes = 1 MegaByte and so forth right ... like 2048 = 2 MegaBytes... Base something?
I use to work at the customer service at CC when those PackBells were sold. We had a ton of problems with them!
WOW, brings back memories of my 386 with the CGA monitor! I had everyone beat because mine had 3 colors!

Memory is addressed in base 2 (binary) and that is why 1024=1k. Also 8 bits to one Byte.
Frequency is base 10 (decimal) so 1000MHz=1GHz, 1024MHz=1.024GHz.

Right. The reason its 1024 for storage devices is because of base 2. That's no applicable for processer speeds.

heard the same thing and also something about an update will release it to the user. Maybe if we ever get ics we will see.
I will confirm that the "missing" ram is dedicated to the GPU. As far as updates freeing it, that is extremely unlikely, where it's at the point where I would say there's no chance at all. Doing so would gimp the GPU too much.
An old version of morfic's kernel freed about 30mb, but it no longer does so for that exact reason.

I'm currently on qkster's stock rooted rom (which is awesome, by the way), but I'd like to try something a littler more fun.
Here's my concern - I'd like it to be relatively light RAM-wise. I get a ton of slowdown (even when using Advanced Task Killer) and am curious if any of the current roms have a lighter memory footprint.
I also need bluetooth and GPS.
So, anyone who's flashed 'em all (or even a few) have a recommendation?
Thanks in advance!!!!

I believe, correct me if I'm wrong, but the only light roms are Vagabond, AEON, and [Dev]a station. All of which are excellent choices. I believe AEON might be the lightest due to Bigfau's choice of apps and such.

qkster rom is great...you get a ton of slowdown? Must have a ton apps running? Powerful depends on the users hands...sure if we both have the same Heavy Duty F350 Ford Truck, but all you do is drive around town and I use mine on the Ranch hauling, pulling, working the fields...your definition of power is different than mine...btw I'm Ford Fan...

The actual available ram is less than total... some is reserved for other system workings, I'd imagine. They just advertise the big number, and it varies between phones/manufacturers...

That is because the kernel is "locked" in memory after boot. This causes the OS to run much faster as all of the seeks are to memory and not storage. Linux and UNIX perform in the exact same fashion and load the whole running kernel into memory.
It appears that the kernel on the A2 has reserved about 300MB of memory.
