Is there an app like Rom manager that makes flashing kernels as easy as roms without using recovery console?
This app does that. Although, I think it will only download Pershoot's kernels for you. But, it can flash any kernel that you have the flashable-zip for on your SD card.
Where do I go to get it to flash kernels?
To flash a kernel and have it work, you have to reboot anyway as far as I know. So why would you want to flash it through rom manager just to reboot? Why not just go into clockwork (or whatever your choice recovery is), flash it, and reboot. Seems simple enough.
However, to install a kernel with it just select 'install rom from sd' find the kernel zip file and that should do it... I think, never tried it myself.
Ok. I was seeing "Rom" and kernel separately. I'll give it a shot on the auto side. I was just wondering if it was auto to eleviate a step in the recovery process i.e. me not doing anything.

You caught me in a pretty sarcastic mood before. But, yup that's all you need to do. As I mentioned, it can even download Pershoot's kernels just like a ROM update.
HOWEVER, if you use MTD, you shouldn't use this method. I've learned the hard way that booting without applying the mtd-boot ZIP can hose the install and require a wipe and/or backup restore.
What is MTD? Im new to the Android side coming from palm and Windows platforms.

I always get an error saying E:/ cannot open file /cache/update.zip (bad), no matter what ROM it is. theres not even an update.zip anywhere on my phone or sd card, and i cant manage to get to this so called /cache. please help.

Since this isn't development related, you should post it in the general board.
You didn't install clockwork correctly, or you didn't follow all of the directions when you did install it. Did you follow the instructions and press "flash clockworkmod recovery", which downloads the latest version and puts the update file on your phone?
i did, i have the latest recovery version. and i uninstalled and then reinstalled it before trying again.
Wrong section and you have to use the option that says choose zip from sdcard not the one that says install update.zip

If there is no update.zip then in Rom Manager you need to select the first option that reads Flash ClockworkMod Recovery. That will bring up a screen asking which phone. If you are installing an i9000 rom choose i9000. If not choose the Captivate. That will install an update.zip on your sd card
Then select install rom from sd card and it will probably take you to stock recovery so select install packages (or whatever the 2nd choice is). That will get you into CWM. Install whatever rom from there

I had a similar problem a while back, and never did figure out exactly what was causing it. Might have been because I often just use the Clockwork update.zip (bootstrapped from stock recovery) to flash ROMs without always "installing" it from Android itself. Though, even when I got that error, I could still flash new ROMs without problems.
Either way, flash to stock w/ oneclick, then do a master clear, fixes the problem right up.

Mmmm.. last time I checked the development forums was for developers to start topics on things they have developed or are working on... not for Q & A. There's another board for that..
I get this error all the time.
Open ROM Manager, hit Menu, hit Clear Download Cache.
Then hit Flash Clockwork Mod Recovery, choose Captivate, and let it go. Then hit Reboot Into Recovery and it should work fine. You may have to select Reinstall Packages if you end up in the stock 2e recovery.

I tried just downloading the rom via rom manaer, clicked wipe data and wipe cache. When I did it tried to install and asid "Could not open cm7nightlyetc..." And then it proceeded to reboot itself as if it was a new phone.
I then tried to do it via recovery. First whenever I click install from zip card then choose zip from sdcard, the only file I can see is LOST.DIR/ even though I deliberately moved the rom into the sdcard/. I was met with the same problem.
During both the encounters. a triangle with an ! appears, with a little android dude next to it. WHat does this mean? What do I need to do to fix this?

First rule of G2X/Tegra2 club... don't use Rom Manager. Use CWR for all your flashing needs. *Install CWR via NVFlash only.
Alright, I'm sorry but I came the G2.... And I was wondering what NVFlash is? I'm gonna google it, but it will be nice if you answer it too.

Oh, and remember to go into C: on your computer and make the folder "G2x". This is where you put the files from NVFlash.

First - the above is the truth - learned the hard way by many.
From the "triangle" comment, I would have thought you were not able to get into recovery anymore, but you said you had tried flashing in recovery - are you still able to get into recovery? Also, when you said you moved the file to the SD - internal or external?
You could re-download the ROM on you computer and/or move the one you downloaded when in USB connect mode if you can connect through USB. and then try flashing it again.
Otherwise - did you do an nandroid back-up first (add that to the G2X Club rules). If so, and you can get into recovery, you can restore it through recovery. If not, you are truly back to square one (except for rooted).
At some point, you need to NVflash a real recovery. The one-click method in the Dev section is the easier way to go. If you can't get into recovery (you only see the triangle and it only does a factory reset), then you HAVE to start there.
Yeah I am still able to get to recovery mode. And external sdcard.
I think i'm just gonna go staright to the NVFlash way. I have a history class today so I have a hour and a half to burn.

All you need to do is NVFlash once, just so you can get into recovery on a bootloop (Power+VolDown)
After you install NVFlash once, you can use RomManager all you want (I do).
Rom Manager will install a temp recovery initially, but it won't affect your permanent NVFlash recovery. So just do both. Rom Manager will work perfectly fine without doing a NVFlash, but an NVFlash just enables the option to get into recovery on a cold boot.
Every day, I launch Rom Manager and it will find the latest Nightly and download it plus Google Apps, prompts for Full Wipe, Backup, or Cache options, then it will reboot, flash the items, and reboot back into Android.
So, again, NVFlash just enables Power+VolDown to get into recovery but Rom Manager works great without it. You SHOULD do BOTH initially and just get it out of the way.

Agree with all the above (I have and use both), except for making nandroids, which was not mentioned above. The only ones where I have had a check-sum issue with trying to restore are nandroids I did with ROM Manager. I would stick with doing them straight from recovery.
Others have had issues with flashing nightlies also, but I have not noticed that as I always head straight to recovery to flash.
Question - I had flashed real recoveries with ROM manager on MT4G - why the "false" recovery issue on G2X?
So player, once I have NVFLASH and CWM, I can download ROM manager to backup/restore/flash any ROM from the list without worrying about anything?
Hey, I installed the 4.0.0.3 and I still have the same problem. I can't see any roms I put on the SD card, and when I try to install it by naming it update.zip it gives me the same error. Any ideas?

THere is definately a file there. I just named it that cause it wont shop up when i choose zip from sd card.
I would redownload the zip file over the computer, happened to me before with a different rom, make sure it doesnt unzip. and then drag it to your SD card.

My goodness... I think you fixed it for me. I feel like an idoit. I've been saving it to hte internal Sdcard i didn't even know that was possible.

The ROMs were probably going to the internal SD by default. Just move them with a file manager to the external SD (unless you set up recovery to use the internal SD).
Also, do not rename them update zip - leave the names as-is so you will know what your are dealing with if you have multiple ROMs .
Then you flash it as a zip file on SD card - not as "update.zip" - that would be for the OTA update - if we ever actually see one for the G2X!

Different roms put the external SD card in different places.
By default Rom Manager is set to read/write to /sdcard/... not /sdcard/external_SD that is the norm with the stock(based) roms.
Once you have CM7 on there and everything setup under standard conditions, Rom Manager will work as it should.

I checked through many threads to see if anyone had a similar problem but couldn't find anything unfortunately.
Background :
I was running a Lite'ning ROM on my Samsung Galaxy S2. You're probably familiar with this ROM, but for those who aren't it gets flashed with ODIN and comes rooted and pre-installed with CWM.
I forget which version of Lite'ning ROM it was, but I am fairly certain it was pre-1.5 as the bundled CWM was definitely version 3.x.x.x (later versions I found had 4.x.x.x and 5.x.x.x).
I wanted to try a version of GalnetMIUI for something a bit different and hadn't changed ROMs in quite some time, so I booted into CWM 3.x.x.x (maybe 3.0.0.2?) and did a backup to the internal SD. This came in at around 1.4 GB and comprised of 4 files :
cache.img
data.img
nandroid.md5
system.img
I copied these to my PC too, just in case they somehow got erased from my phone.
Once I'd done this, I then copied the new ROM .zip file (latest version of GalnetMIUI) to the root of the internal SD, booted the phone into CWM, wiped user data and Dalvik cache, then proceeded to install it.
The problem :
I can't get my apps or data back. I was under the false impression that my Google account was automatically backing this up for me, and would restore everything once logged in as it had in the past (factory resets etc.). So once this didn't happen, I tried using CWM to revert back to how things were before installing the new ROM but although the restore appears to work I end up with issues.
I've tried a number of different ROMs and they either get stuck in 'boot loops' or a black screen after running through the restore procedure. I've tried restoring just data via the 'Advanced' option but this doesn't help.
I was under the impression that I'd be able to fully restore the ROM backup if I needed to, and have the phone running exactly how it was prior to messing around. It would seem this is not the case.
In desperation I tried flashing every Lite'ning ROM from version 1.0 to 4.2, restoring my backup each time but as mentioned I always get boot issues.
Have I lost my data? I hope not, as I had 'To Do' lists and all sorts of things that would cause problems if they were not retrievable. I realise this is a lack of knowledge and foresight on my part. I'm thinking now that I should have run Titanium Backup prior to this, and not assumed that CWM was going to provide a complete solution.
Hope all this makes sense and if any of you have the time to read through and offer advice it would be greatly appreciated. I am currently running a very pretty and slick GalnetMIUI without any of my data!

OK, so after hours of searching I'm still no wiser as to how to install CWM 2.5.1.2
I found a zip file that was apparently version 2.5.1.2 but when I tried to install it from inside CWM 5.0.2.6 (included with GalnetMIUI) it sometimes gives an error, sometimes it reboots CWM and sometimes it simply says it has successfully installed (it lies). No matter what it says or does, it doesn't seem to actually replace version 5.0.2.6 with the older one and every time I do the three-finger boot it loads up the latest version like nothing changed.
I'm just so lost. All I want to do is restore my old backup, get my data back and move on. Please someone help me before I go insane from all this research!
[EDIT] In case any more information is needed, my exact procedure for installing version 2.5.1.2 of CWM went like this :
Download 2.5.1.2 zip file
Copy zip file to root folder on internal SD
Boot into CWM 5.0.2.6
Select "install zip from sdcard"
Select "choose zip from sdcard"
Navigate to 2.5.1.2 zip file, select and confirm
Can anyone help me at all?
In particular I'd like to know how I can downgrade to CWM 2.5.1.2 or similar in order to give [email protected]'s suggestion a go.
Failing that, if anyone has any suggestions whatsoever about how I can get my backup data restored it would be greatly appreciated. After spending some time with MIUI - in particular the Galnet ICS build - I have nothing but praise, but I really have to get my data back!
You should be able to downgrade through ROM manager. Go to "All Clockwork Mod Recoveries" and just flash one that is not 5.x.x. Any backup not made with version 5 will not work with the new version So if you can flash one that is version 2, 3 or 4 you should be good to go. If that doesn't work you can fastboot flash it. There are guides on how to do that.

For some reason, when I select "All ClockworkMod Recoveries" the only two options are 4.0.1.4 and v4.0.1.4. I'll have to look into "fastboot" flashing as I've never heard of that.
By the way, if I boot into CWM via ROM Manager the version that loads is 4.0.1.5, but if I perform the three-button combo when switching my device on I get version 5.0.2.6.

Edit - Just tried this and at first it rebooted CWM and the version number hadn't changed. Doing this again yielded me the following error with no change in version number :

I found out that I can extract the contents of my backed up .img files using unyaffs.exe.
Unless I'm doing something wrong, it would appear that my backup is corrupt somehow. When trying to extract data.img, it processes for a while and does bring back a lot of files but I also get the following :

data.img is around 1.2GB but the files I extract only amount to around 190MB.
It would appear that I don't have my contacts database in there which is annoying as for some reason there were quite a few that didn't get synced to Google's servers.
I just downloaded Rom manager and it says i need clockwork recover installed. So i select it.
It gives me 4 choices.
1. Google nexus S
2. Google nexus S 4G
3. Samsung epic 4G
4. Samsung Galaxy S i9000
I have a Samsung Galaxy Captivate i896 (Rogers).
Which one do i select?
Im guessing the i9000 but i will await a reply!

You'll need option 5: None of the above.
Seriously, though, Rom Manager doesn't work that well for the Captivate. You'll be in much better shape if you do the things that Rom Manager normally handles by yourself.

Really!!! Damn. I just bought Rom manager premium and was going to flash CyanogenMod on my phone and i found a video using rom manager and it seems a lot easier to do with it.
Im wondering if its because i changed the stock kernel so i could root the phone! I put the mtcareys-kernel on following a user post.
I bet that's why i does not recognize the phone.
Sorry to hear you spent the money, but maybe it's not entirely bad - Rom Manager works on a lot of other devices, and you can (I believe) transfer the program between devices.
Rom Manager might not recognize your device if the build.prop file was edited. That could be why it's showing the I9000 option.
As far as flashing CyanogenMod, it's fairly straightforward:
1. Flash a kernel that will let you use CWM Recovery (Corn Kernel should have it - Boog's kernel does too, and if you need Froyo, look for speedmod).
2. Once in Recovery, flash the CM update.zip (you may have to do this twice. If so, reboot to recovery again, and flash again).
That should get you to CyanogenMod.

Clockwork mod recover. Is that the blue writing that comes up when you press and hold volume up and down and then power? If so then yes i do have that. I used that to root the phone with the corn kernel. Little green guy with a yellow corn a boot up!
I did down load the latest stable version of CM. (update-cm-7.1.0-Captivate-signed)
It says to Place the CyanogenMod update.zip file on the root of the internal memory. But then it says Select Install zip from sdcard.
Also where is the update.zip file? And does it go on the root of the sd card or the root of the internal memory!

The actual name of the file you downloaded isn't that important. You can leave it with whatever it comes as. The "update.zip" they're referring to is the CM build you downloaded.
What you'll need to do is to copy the .zip file onto your phone Internal SD (the 13 GB partition) at a place you can find it easily. Once you've done that, reboot into CWM recovery (the menu with about 7-9 options, including "install zip from sdcard". It may have blue writing, depending on which build it is. If it only has 4 options, you don't have CWM recovery, but stock recovery.).
Once you're there, select the install zip from sdcard option, and navigate to where you put that zip file. Choose to install it and let it run.
If you're confused about whether you're putting an item on the internal sd card or not, you can connect your phone (including doing the "connect usb storage" dialog) and see what the drive sizes are. Once you know for sure which is your internal SD (13 GB), and which is your external SD (GB based on your card size), you can then re-label them in Windows (e.g. Internal SD and External SD). Those labels will usually stick pretty well.

i was going thru my file manager to get rid of some old downloads and files and i deleted update.zip. i am now pretty sure it was for rom manager or cwm and remember seeing somewhere that it is supposed to stay on the phone.
how to fix this? download new rom manager?
I have noticed lately that when i want to reboot to recovery from rom manager to flash something it just reboots the phone.

That s what I was hoping. I don't know what I have actually used this for , I just thought I needed it. I Normally boot to recovery and flash from there. Can I delete it, or is there a purpose for it?

The update.zip contained cwm and was used during the eclair 2.1 days. Now days to get access to cwm we have custom kernels and we can use the extended power button menu of dev roms, button combo, apps, etc. to boot into recovery...so yep, don't worry about keepin it, unless u plan on goin back to eclair.
