Hey Guys,
I remember the first two days I had my HOX, i thought the battery life was amazing but now on the 4th day it seems to be getting worse. I don't know if it has to do with the 1.82 RUU or other stuff i have running so I thought I ask.
With the screen off in sleep mode, i lose about 1% every 45-60 mins. The only things I have running are the default HTC sense weather, battery indicator and gmail widget. I just turned the wifi setting where it would shut down after the phone goes to sleep but that doesn't seem to be helping.
Overall today i used it for a few mins for txt and basically installed two apps and i'm down to 80% already since 7:00am. It did push maybe 5-6 emails to the phone while it was off.
Anyone else seeing this kind of battery life?
George
Is this your first smartphone? That is pretty decent battery life for the type of phone it is. You're getting much better battery life than a lot of people in these forums. This belongs in the battery life thread that is already started though.
My phone lasts from 8am to 4am daily, with ~2 hours of screen usage, 1-2hrs of calling, and wifi always on. By the end of the night, I have a minimum of 25% remaining, and sometimes even 40-45% or so.
The only time it dies quickly is when I'm in an area with no service, then the "cell standby" time shoots through the roof and kills the battery like no tomorrow.
Maybe you should download CPU spy and check to see if it's deep sleeping or not. If not, or if it spends too much time at higher frequencies, check out Better Battery Stats and look for wakelocks/other apps that are taking up too much usage time.
Option two you should probably try anyway, CPUSpy or not.
The battery stats are bogus... my phone was off the charger for 2 hours with the screen off and lost 18% and yet my stats say it was asleep... downloaded better battery stats and I'm finding the culprit today

I got betterbatterystats installed and it's saying my phone does NOT go into deep sleep mode.
In the past hour:
Deep sleep: 3 seconds
Awake time: 1 h 35 minutes
Screen on: 12 minutes
What would cause my phone to never sleep even though the screen was off for 1 hour and 20 minutes? ....

Im pretty sure its betterbatterystats. I uninstalled mine and battery life significantly improved.
Is there any way to test if my phone is sleeping without BBS?
I JUST installed BBS because my battery life has been pretty bad these past 2 days...can't make it to 3 hours screen on time (which is why I returned my galaxy note)

It mean ur phone even if the screen goes off there's process that make ur phone doesn't put to deep sleep (like app with auto update on e.g twitter or facebook and so on, depend on your app in the phone)
In BBS, you can check what things that make you phone didn't put to asleep. You can find it in Kernel wakeup/partial wakeup/other in BBS.

+1 for this. I got about 9 hours with this on. I'm now at 2 days and counting with it off.
WiFi performance will keep your phone awake. It's good for long downloads and such, usually when screen goes off it'll go into low performance mode and will crawl for downloads. It has a purpose, just remember to turn it off after

I actually figured out that that was the problem causing no sleep. I was having WiFi problems which were fixed by this...but figured it may have an effect on the battery too. I switched it off and turned my phone screen off for 10 minutes...right away 10 minutes of deep sleep showed up.
Getting much better stand-by battery life...unfortunately I'm on my phone a lot (for texts, facebook, twitter, instagram, web browsing) and the screen on battery life still won't go past 3 hours! :/

There is a battery thread... But to the OP, that's pretty decent.
for me... 29% on for 14 hours and thirty minutes. Screen on 1:32. 1:47 for voice calls. And I did a lot of music streaming.
WiFi high performance is good when you need it, otherwise turn off because it prevents your phone from deep sleep. Fastboot should also be killed unless you need it. Fastboot is only useful if you turn your phone off and on often. No difference for rebooting. Some apps don't like it.

So the screen is supposed to have less drain on the battery? Why does it drain 80% of the battery consistently? So if this phone had a regular lcd screen it would only last 3 hours?
When I'm at work the service sucks and my phone is constantly searching for signal. The battery went down two % in a minute and goes down 5-6 every hour if not more when not using it. At home I don't have this issue and I get much better performance. I pimped my phone out and I feel like this is the cause of such short performance. The phone is much more responsive and I love it but if I want to make it through a day I can hardly use the thing. Just posting this thread caused my phone to go down 4%

lol switch to the dell streak or the evo, you'll then truelly be able to appreciate battery life on the captivate.
in general though, it seems like you're having some bad luck with your battery. Some users suggested doing some power cycling and a factory reset of the phone. I also highly recommend reading the pimp my captivate pdf. Nifty little section in there for battery optimization.

When was your phone purchased? If you registered it, did you happen to notice the manufactured date?
if your phone is on standby, when you go to settings-about phone-battery- What is eating the battery?
My first Captivate would drain the battery (even in "standby") about 2-3% per hour. Even though the phone would be on standby more than on, the DISPLAY was eating the battery life more than "cell standby"
my 2nd captivate - battery is lasting much longer - took it off the charger Friday at 7PM - am currently at 34% - and I've used the web browser/navigation/browsed the market, made phone calls, etc)
When I view the battery settings, "cell standby" is first in line..
Also, when I do keep the phone on standby, the battery BARELY drains.. I'm talking maybe 1% for 3 hours
Oh, the GPS works on phone #2 as well. My 2nd phone was manufactured 7/20, first phone was 7/10

If you went down 4% just posting, then it sounds more like a battery issue. Can't really help you there. But the crappy service at work thing - have you tried seeing if flipping from 3g to edge helps? In my office, my 3g signal is bad - 0-2 bars, constantly fluctuating. If I filp to edge, 4 - 5 bars the whole time. You could definitely save some battery there, if it worked for you. Here's the thread for changing to 2g: hxxp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=737137
FYI - Checked battery at Midnight last night- battery status was 32%
Battery is STILL at 32% this morning.
If my phone is idleing, i hardly lose any battery percentage.
I use Juice Defender to help my battery. i can easily get 2 days out of it if I use my computer to browse the web, but sometimes it's just easier to use my phone if I am at home or laying in bed.
Some of you are getting some very impressive battery life, I cannot seem to compare.
My battery went down 5% over 6 hours. Which is a huge improvement over the 30 percent it did before.
My phone has been off the charger for 15 hours and 26 minutes. About 8 hours of which I was asleep and the phone was in standby. My display is still listed as #1 in battery history at 52%, I don't understand how anyone gets the display out of the #1 spot.
if you don't use the phone, it wont. I've had it where my display and idle were about the same, but that's because i haven't used it.
If you make a phone call, the display will turn off and your cell service will take over the #1 spot.
The display will drain the battery the fastest. Even if it does suck less juice than before, it is still more than android needs to run. If you take the display away and give it a black and white that you find on E-Readers, I bet this phone would last for days and days. You are paying for a 4 inch screen that is gorgeous. Of course it is going to use battery life. There aren't any other ways around this.
EDIT: I'll play around with it for the next few hours while i'm hitting golf balls and then I'll break it all down and we'll see how my battery has been affected.
For those of you who don't have there screen with the main drain what do you have it set at? I have auto brightness on and power saving on. Maybe these cause more problems. With the screen constantly adjusting our drains more than it save s

Voice calls is in first at 52% and display is at second with 38%. I get amazing battery life out of this device. Again I am comparing this to a BBC bold.
My battery would drain down twice per day.
If I was going to turn off background data, browse on my PC, and micromanage all the settings... well, I wouldn't have gotten a smartphone.
I would have preferred a slightly thicker phone to go with a larger battery. Samsung had the option with the BlackJack with a bigger battery & second battery door.

1500 mah is the largest battery in a phone yet. I am sure someone will release an extended battery which will also add thickness.
Typical Android devices get terrible battery life from what I have heard.
I'm not at all surprised that my display is the #1 factor in draining my battery. I bought this phone for its display.
What I am surprised to hear are those people who own this phone, use it, and don't have their display as numero uno in their battery history. I have to imagine they either: 1) don't use the phone all that much (e.g. have it in standby most of the time), 2) only use it for phone calls & texts, or 3) have their brightness/other settings set up uniquely.
I'm most interested as to whether #3 is true. If that's the case I'd like to find out what those settings are and try them out myself.
I know that there are lots of these battery life threads and i have read most of them and I've tried closing processes that i don't need and i have tried setcpu to keep the cpu low when the device is off, which seemed to help some but my phone would shutoff randomly. So last night i had a full battery and went to bed when i woke up 8 hrs later i was at 20% so about 10% an hr not even using the device. I have attached some pics for reference does anyone have any thoughts that might help. Thanks
I don't know about galaxy S but on my X10 the problem was wifi.
When I didn't have a data plan I had wifi on all day and the battery was down in 10h max 12h.
To improve it I had to use JuiceDefender to enable wifi every five minutes for updates..
Try to disable wifi overnight, reboot the phone and see what happens.
By the way, what app you used for those stats?

My battery icon depletes one notch when I'm using the screen for about an hour. Some people recommend cycling the battery, in which you do a full drain and immediate full charge, 3 or 4 times. I've done it, but it's hard to say if it explains my good battery life.
let the battery drain COMPLETELY until the phone turns off a couple times, then charge it till 100% without unplugging it.

You don't want to drain the battery that much, those kind of batteries can be damaged. The phone turns off for a reason.
I haven't done the cycle thing and its fine. A lot of that comes from older batteries with the memory problem.
irus, software which is based on data connection drains the battery one way or another. Some apps now support push notifications and IM+ does too. Did you try to use push?
These claims of multiple day charges with moderate use is crazy to me. I have the newest ROM, a black screen, display all the way down, gps off, wifi on when in range, make zero voice calls, run juice, and only have 2 widgets that update every 4 hours. I use my phone for a maximum of 3 hours browsing the web, reading XDA and feedR, checking facebook and the occasional text message. My phone lasts a total of 12 to 14 hours. My battery has a manufacture date of late July. Is there some secret I am not aware of?

This. It's noon and I'm still at 80%. I used to have to set my phone to flight mode all day at work just to make it through the day. Now I can leave 3G on all day and not worry about it. That's the best part of the update in my opinion.
I was about to post this also. Yes, I have noticed a dramatic increase in battery life since I've updated. Now granted, it's been less than 24 hours but it is noticeable. I'll see how it goes over the next few days. But I agree, I am very happy with the update so far.

6 hours 53 minutes since unplug and I'm at 23% battery. This is roughly on track with previous battery depletion, but today I've been doing heavier internet and Facebook use than usual. I think that, previous to this update, I would have had to charge by now. This is with background data and sync on, over wifi, with a combination of Google Listen, Music Player, and Pandora use.
The telling point is that screen battery use is about 10-12% lower than usual for this type of usage, at 54%. I've seen it as high as 70% on days when I'm playing around with the phone a lot.
I'm ready to call this an improvement.

My phone was at about 75% at around 8:00PM last night. It's currently 2:42PM now and it's only down to 25%. Granted, it was in sleep mode from around 12:30AM to about 7:00AM. But I did use it moderately last night and throughout the day today. So the battery performance has definitely improved for mine (stock with yesterday's update).

Unfortunately my battery life has been greatly decreased by the update. My phone is rooted, but the update installed without any trouble on the first try. Before the update the phone was fine between 9am and 1-2am without charging it at all. That's being on wifi most of the time, and maybe a bit of talking, e-mail, and rss reading. Once asleep I'd let it charge overnight. Typically Display used the most battery, usually about 50%.
Since the update I find that I need to charge the phone in the middle of the day. The first full day of the update I used the audio player for several hours, so I thought maybe that was it, but I've done that before without a major impact on the battery. Today I didn't use the audio player at all, and after 8 hours the battery is down to 26%.
According to the power usage information the largest consumer is Voice calls, at 29%. That was 11m 46s of call time. Looking at Juiceplotter, for a typical day at work before the update my battery dropped about 2% in 2 hours, with the phone on wifi, and otherwise idle. Today the phone lost 6-9% in 2 hours of being idle.
The last time I charged my phone was yesterday morning. I just plugged it in an hour ago at 15%. Thats like, 35 hours on a charge after moderate usage. Not bad. Much better than my old G1 heh.
I'm at 45 hours, still at 29%. Light usage, probably ~12 hrs in flight mode, but music player on for about 5 hrs, 5 min voice call, a few texts, some facebook/web. Still very impressive!
I've had slightly better battery life since the update.

Mine is more like 7%/hr, which is totally unacceptable, I have all sync turned off, except exchange... with my HD2 running Froyo, I could do 2%/hr with the same settings.... I am still trying to figure out what's draining my battery...
I have also noticed high data usage.. I've tracked it down to T-mobile's AppPack. I've never used the program but it's constantly draining away my data... Is there a way for me to remove the app or disable it?
Thanks!
Get Watchdog from the Amazon appstore to find out what's draining your battery. I believe it costs, but it is a thoroughly useful app
Don't think we can remove carrier apps until we have root...that said, you could try adb pull, but I'm not sure whether it will have any effect. May need root for ab pull, in which case we can't get rid of carrier apps :/ sorry

Battery was soo good i barely charged it went to work with a 40% battery and it easily made it through a day with moderate texting all day!!
Gotta say... coming from a TBolt this thing is like sex in a tin can.
Idle is 1-2%/hr probably. I would get 10%+ on my TBolt at times... if not more. It was bad.

its funny how some people report 0% battery drain in 9 hours and other get 3-4% drain per hour.....
please post how many charge cycles you went through, its important.
I am personally using HD2 and battery live is amazing. and its only 1250

I did three full charge/discharges .
I lose about 25% in 9 hours at work mostly idle/ minimal use.

Darn it...
Seems like I'm the only person with excessive battery drain...at 7%/hr....
Just wondering, when you go into battery stats and extend the graph, does your phone stay awake when the screen is off?...
Mine seems to be awake all the time even though the screen is off.
I got Watchdog yesterday, I didn't notice any apps with high CPU usage...
Me too.. I lost about 8%/hour in 2g standby mode... Totally unacceptable comparing to my previous galaxy s...
Hope next FW update will improve it ..

today is the first time I'm having issues. Only 4 hours since charge & down to 40%. The Awake time shows as 99% of Up Time. Is that normal??? Also, anytime I look at the task manager it shows wifi calling running even though I have it shut off
I've got an Asian model sensation (ie. 3g and not 4G model ) and I find my battery isn't really calibrated properly so its hard to comment on average percentage drop per hour. I've recharged my battery 3 times already and i find the battery stays at 100 percent for around 30 minutes of constant on web browsing, then it will drop at a rate of 10 percent every half an hour with constant use and will fluctuate.
To report on a rough usage breakdown, with all background syncing disabled, I managed to get 10 hours standby before my phone dropped below 10 percent. This was with 5 hours of screen being constantly on doing mainly web browsing on 3g and one 15 minute phone call using my wireless Bluetooth handsfree.
I can report the battery life with constant usage is better than what i got with ny hd2. Running android ROM, it used to do around 3 hours of constant web browsing before the battery will fall under 15 percent. In standby my hd2 used to drop around 1% per hour, which was quite excellent.

Those are the stuff I'm talking about, it appears that one of the settings and/or app is constantly using the processor, which causes the phone to stay awake even when the screen is off... I just haven't figured out which app is causing the problem.. I am suspecting it is one of the Tmo apps.
I'm looking at a full battery life of 11 hours, 49 minutes with moderate usage (some calls, decent amount of texting, some games). I use the app/widget "Battery Left" to do its own independent assessment of battery usage and life.
So far the battery reminds me of my early days with my Nexus One -- before I had it rooted and optimized and undervolted. Once rooted and optimized, I saw a good 50% increase (at least in battery life).
If you'd like some relief right now (before we get it rooted), I recommend Juice Defender on the market. It turns off data (among other things) every now and then to save battery, and with this I can squeeze out 18+ hours with moderate usage.
how are you checking the percentage? when I looked in the settings menu, all I see is a long green battery bar, no actual numbers. Or are you all estimating from that?
I don't monitor my standby time, but I'm sitting at what looks like 40% after 13 hours of fairly moderate usage during the day, I'm impressed.
Ive been getting about 9 hours out of a full charge. Had to put my phone on the charger today at around 4 o clock because it was dead. I dont have much more info other than that. I will keep an eye on my processes over the next few days. I have only 3-4 cycles on the battery though.
To check the percentage of the battery life u have to download some battery widget in the market.. I.e smart battery monitor or battery percentage s.th like that...

You can also check battery level by opening Phone and dialing *#*#4636#*#* and then select Battery information.
I'm using Juice Defender and I have to say it really does the job : my Sensation lasts More than one day and a half (30min calling a day, texting, Android Market, Angry Birds...). Without the app running it would last a day (Angry Birds drains...).
Juice Defender says it is increasing battery to 1,53% and it is very close from reality.
I've been owning the phone from 24th of May.
I don't know how everyone else is getting 3-5 hours of on screen time. When my screen is on, I lose about 1 percent every 2 minutes it seems like. When I look at the app usage, the kernel and media are sucking the life out of the battery. I am really discouraged about this battery because my G2 would easily get 3.5+ hours of on screen time. So far, I am going to be lucky to get about an hour.

Something is wrong with ur phone or u have some jacked up apps. I have got over 6 hours screen time with this phone and got over 5 with my DNA. You need to download GSAM or BEtter battery stats.

I have Gsam installed but sometimes it doesn't accurately record on screen time as it resets to 0. Also, today I unplugged my phone and the phone was thinking that the charger was still connected. As I said, Gsam reports that the Kernel is taking battery power.

Something is way wrong with your phone then.
Mine has terrible battery life
I am very much on the same page with you. I am on my 4th cycle.
Mine only last 14 hours with 3 hours of screen time. I don't understand how all these people are getting 5 to 6 hours of screen time.
I have both Better Battery Stat and GSam monitor and it shows Kernel is taking 50% and system is taking 6.2%
Just try with different kernals, good kernals would give exellent battery life
I would gladly take the battery problems to get rid of this brand new beast. It's too Frickin big.. I had g2 but sold it. Paid 700 for this att note 3...lol. straight talk on att towers to save on bills. But this thing may be the fastest latest greatest next to the new releases of '14 but I should have kept the g2...This is a tank. I'd swap for smaller phone in heartbeat. Might post cl ad

Are you in the right forum? This makes no sense.
I think it highly depends on what you're doing when screen is on. If you're playing games or using a lot of data, it can drain very quickly. If you're watching local videos or something, your battery would last a lot longer.
Im a beginner, xda said i must have 10 posts to do anything on xda so i was filling my posts..sorry friend....now i got 10 posts so im playing with n9005 rom section now
if you are rooted, install better battery stats (free on xda from the dev) to see the culprit.
clearly something is keeping the phone awake and hogging the cpu
So far today with only 10 minutes of screen on time and 45 minutes of playing a podcast through Bluetooth in my car the battery is down to 92%. This podcast was already downloaded and just playing from Dogcatcher. When I left I rebooted the phone right after pulling it off the charger. The phone is rooted and all Verizon apps are disabled. I see the android system at 40% and Google Services at 15% usage. Yesterday with only about 2 hours of screen on time I was down to 18% after 10 hours off the charger. I do not see any one app drawing power, it is always the android system it seems.
Edit: Using BetterbatteryStats I noticed that my phone has basically been awake the entire time it has been off the charger. Out of 2.5 hours it was in deep sleep for 10 minutes.
I don't get great battery life either. Nor do I get good game performance. Battery has went down 9% in less than 2 hours of idle. Just downloaded gsam the kernel use is the highest at 26+ percentage

Turning off Location Reporting made a HUGE difference to my battery life. I accidentally left my phone laying in bed next to me last night instead of plugged in, and it dropped maybe 5% over 6 hours.

I will try disabling location reporting. But I know with my Galaxy S3 I had this enabled and did not have battery issues.
I turned off location reporting and location history and am seeing better battery life today. 5hrs 47 min and 89% battery left.
My battery is confusing me. First 2 days.. 15hrs 3hrs screen on time.. 3 days after that 24+hrs with 5hrs screen on time... The past couple of days I'm back down to 14-15hrs with 1-3hrs screen on time. This is running it down to 10%
My usage isn't much different from day to day.
Power saving is now enabled and I turned off location settings. Let's see...

What I do not understand is why my old GS3 and my co-workers HTC One M7 with location services on, do not have this battery drain problem. This should not be an issue.
Yeah, it seems to be an on and off issue. On my GNex sometimes after flashing a ROM I had to turn location reporting off to get through the day, and then after the next ROM flash I didn't.
