[Q] Should i S-off before i do my ICS OTA update - HTC Sensation

I read some wear that i should S-Off before i do my ICS update today.
I also read that when i do it, i should not install a backup or i wont be able to get the update... not sure what that meant.
1- so my question is, should i S off and what benifit will that give me now? does it mean i cant s off later if i wanted to?
2- ifi SHOULD s off now before my update, what is the simplest way to do it.
3- for those that updated already, does it reset your phone and you loose all the apps installed?
thanks.. and before you bash.. im a noob... never s-offed or flashed. so any answers please be descriptive as possible...
im sure no one has ever asked this question before... lol.. just kidding.

I read here, but have a stock Sensation also -- all the s-off/bootloader/flash/etc jargon here seems overwhelming to me, so I'm still stock
But like you was hoping for ICS -- but I dont want to lose my Hotspot, so I'm not sure what to do now
From what I have read here -- YES, go s-off before you go to ICS -- it sounds like it is much more difficult to go s-off after the ICS update
What I wish is to have ICS and a new Sense with Hotspot still working like now -- so I'm as lost as you now

I did just that, s-offed before updating my phone today.
It's not very hard to turn the secureflag off - just the follow the guide that is stickied on the front page and you'll be fine. The only problem I encountered was when my Win 7 machine couldn't find the driver for my HTC phone. I had to d/l the driver executable off Revolutionary's website.
Easy peasy. Once you s-off you can try the official ICS OTA update and if you don't like it, root it and try another ROM

In short yes. S-off will unlock the bootloader allowing you to flash a custom recovery image even after the the update. However when doing the s-off process when the box comes up to install clockworkmod recovery click no. You can then apply the OTA as normal

Here's the BEST & EASIEST Toolkit out by the master hasoon2000's http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1497404 ,he's made gaining S-OFF etc..so easy for the end user, all you have to do is follow his step by step instructions & why bother with all that when there's countless ICS ROMS out??I personally have no need to do a OTA on my Sensation,I've been running ICS over 4 months now & it's more stable, doesn't kill tethering etc...If you do do a OTA & lose your Tethering,go grab FoxFi from the Play store,it works even if you're not rooted

this is good info.. thank you.
Well i honestly tried a few months back and started reading about roms etc.
But what stopped me was so many threads and opinions on how best to do it, and i just got over whellemed. So i decided to wait for the easy OTA.
The other reason i never did it was that it seems some portion of the roms avaiable had an issue here or there... no wifi calling, or bluetooth.. or something stupid like that.. maybe it has all been fixed i dont know i just never had the time to learn it all.
but this is great help.. thanks everyone...

oh.. forgot to ask again,, will the update wipe out all my apps?
i was thinking of factory resseting before the update then reinstalling my apps and contacts etc after the update. all my apps are free versions i really dont have that much.

I've been on LeeDroids blazing fast, stable ROM where everything works like BT,GPS,WiFiHotSpot etc...I've yet to see anything not work ;-) If you do a OTA then your internal SD card will be wiped so if i were you I'd back up EVERYTHING!As for apps, once you sign back into Google they will download for you but like i said make sure you backup EVERYTHING important ie, pictures, videos, ringtones, your contacts should remain. But to be honest I've never done a OTA(why bother when I've been on custom ROMs made by the best Devs

BTW,where'd the damn thanks button go?? i hate this new layout to be honest....I'm like Stewie Griffin "i hate changes"

I asked a very similar question earlier, the response was you should S-OFF today before taking the update. After taking the OTA you will have a new locked bootloader but it will have the Security Flag set to off (S-OFF) which means you can flash any firmwares you like, including a new fully unlocked bootloade and be able to root the rom as well.

i was waiting too, but i remembered you have to go into usb debugging mode and check it off.
its located at settings>applications>development
once i did that it found my phone
also make sure you download the drivers and install on your computer.
after drivers are installed, and you set usb connection to "disk drive" and change usb to "enable debugging" it worked for me.
after the process it asks if i want to install clockword mod, say no.

Thanks that had USB debug had to be checked first!! I got to the clockwork recovery and I typed "n" then enter. Now I have this weird screen on my Sensation with the three droids at the bottom. Is it over? What do I do next? Btw it says hboot 1.17.1111 and before this was 1.18.0000? What's up with that?

I came across this,i hope this helps you out...
"Yes, I get past that part and then on the Revolutionary step it is "waiting for [my] device."
I know im just as new and I had the same problem.. the way i fixed it on mine was to go into the usb connection and select disk drive so the pc recognizes the device not sure if that is correct but that fixed it for me."
I found this here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1497404&page=6

Actually I tried that and it did not work for me until I checked "USB debugging", as in loueber's post above, which did the trick. Maybe you need to do both steps? I'm not sure but it worked. Thank you

Yes, those that encountered the problem of Waiting for device...in the command window.
I tried HTC sync and the USB debugging mode fix to no avail. However, everytime I connected the device, my Win 7 computer was missing the drivers to the phone. You can download them here: http://downloads.unrevoked.com/HTCDriver3.0.0.007.exe
And for the question about "will I lose all my apps after doing the update?" No. all my apps are there. Even so, you should have all your apps tied in through the Play Store's history (and your google account).
Remember, after upgrading to Sense 3.6, you'll get a new launcher bar at the bottom where you can place 4 shortcuts which also double as the shortcut apps on the lock screen.

If you have HTC Sync on your computer uninstall it, I seem to remember it can cause problems when using revolutionary.

I don't really understand your question but if you wanna do the OTA you must 1st relock your bootloader,do the update then unlock bootloader (in order to flash kernels, radios etc..) & if you want S-OFF with the new HBOOT from Juopunutbear (HBOOT 1.27.0000 with 3.32 ICS Firmware)then follow this easy guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1614617 but make sure all ADB is killed in Task Manager etc..also you may have to uninstall HTC Sync for it to work(although i didn't).I hope i understood you. Also if you're already rooted there's really no need in doing the OTA because there's plenty of stable, better ROMs out for ICS & you gain NOTHING by doing the update IMHO,except lose root, relock your bootloader etc...

[Q] HTC Sensation: Phone ON, but screen BLANK after Android 2.3.4 OTA update!

Hi all,
I got the Android 2.3.4 OTA update, downloaded and installed it. The Sensation switched on right after update. The HTC boot screen came up, the boot-up sound played, AND THE SCREEN WENT BLANK!!
Now, I know the phone is actually ON, because I can call it from another phone and it rings. Also, the regular gesture on the screen to answer a call works too, but still, nothing shows on the display.. it's totally BLANK..
How can i solve this issue?? Thanks in advance
Try flashing a RUU again, there's a thread with all available RUUs here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1074559
If you have a Tmobile Sensation then select TMOUS and open it after it downloads, and follow instructions. If it doesn't work, you should put the warranty to use if it has warranty.

Thanks for the quick reply!
Just wanted to note to you that my phone has never been rooted or has never had any custom firmware or any such thing done. This was the only OS update i've done since i bought it. Other than that, only tiny apps and games have been installed.
Also, the phone is not locked to any network.
Does your instruction still apply? if so, please let me know the way ahead. Thanks again

Yes, the RUU is a file that you open and it's like an OTA update but for computer, something like that. I have a Tmobile Sensation and I flashed this one:
RUU_Pyramid_TMOUS_1.29.531.2_Radio_10.42.9007.00P_10.11.9007.15_M_release_193714_signed
It's the latest leaked RUU I think, and it's the same version that came with my phone when I got it. I used it to get S-ON too after S-Off and rooting. There's a tutorial for that too here if you want to root. Let me know how it works.

Yea, that's the thing, my friend. I don't want to do anything like rooting/unrooting etc. etc. all i want is my phone's screen to start working.
before the 2.3.4 OTA update, I had Android 2.3.3 on my phone. is there any way to go back to that version of Android?
You not rooting/unrooting. You're just flashing the stock ROM back onto the phone. See it as reformating a PC hard drive for a clean installation. You will lose all data, mind

aah ic.. apologies for my stupid questions.. i'me truly a newbie when it comes to stuff like this..
can you please give me directions on which RUU to choose and how to go about doing the installation? umm... please...? *innocent eyes*
Haven't tried taking the battery out yet..? First thing I would do
Hi Tirozz,
Yea i've done all of that:
- took off battery, put it in after 30 seconds, switched it on
- did hard reset by going into that special mode by pressing power and volume down
- took off memory card and switched on
still nothing..
MicroWise, there is a way to get back to Android 2.3.3. Download this RUU if you have a Tmobile Sensation:
http://www.filefactory.com/file/cb7...00P_10.11.9007.15_M_release_193714_signed.exe
Open it in your Windows PC and follow the instructions, then you'll have the stock Android 2.3.3 back again.
If you don't have the TMobile one, download the corresponding one from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1074559
Let me know how it goes.
I had the same problem,
& i solve it by installing the previous ROM & don't flash the update
install your compatible Rom form the thread above,

Thanks for the instructions, KCuadrado. And again, i'm very sorry for being an absolute idiot in this area and bugging you all with it..
my sensation is not a Tmobile.. infact its not tied to ANY operators.. and doesn't have any operator logos on it either.. it is not network locked.. so which RUU do i use from there?
I don't know how to help you now :/
Check the RUU forum thread and ask if someone has a RUU for your HTC. Or you can try rooting and getting SuperCID so you can flash any RUU file, but it's easier to ask on the forum thread for your compatible RUU file.
Alright, Thanks a lot, dude.

I'm ready

I've decided that I'm going to Root my stock HTC Sensation Z710e and install Android Revolution HD on it.
I'm looking at the downloads section on this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=14192842&postcount=4
But I'm still a little unsure as to how I should go about doing this.
I take it that it's a good idea to back up all my user data first etc...
Should I use the free ver. of Titanium backup for this etc?
I know I'm a n00b and there are instructions to do this but I'd like some more advice etc...
Here is all the phone details if any of it helps.

So I'm guessing that I need to S-off the handset first and permenantly Root it? Then do something with superCID? (which is what exactly? I'm not sure), then I can flash the ROM onto the phone from my SD card?
Thanks alot guys, I really want to learn how to do this safely.
You can't use TB until you're rooted. Just follow the guide at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1192300 and you should be set.

Thanks sshede, So I need to follow that guide up to step 4 to completely Root the handset?
Then from there I can back up and then Flash the android Rev HD ROM onto the phone?
Also if you are upgrading to an ICS ROM, I would advise against using an app backup app like TB because of the different ways GB and ICS handle the data partition, some people get seriously weird bugs by using TB.

Well you have to have at least the USB drivers for it to proceed.

Yes, UNINSTALL HTC Sync but not the drivers...

PLEASE HELP!!! My HTC One X is completely messed up and i would like some help**

Hello everybody i am posting because my One X is messed up. I bought the phone from radio shack and i love it. When i first bought it i rooted it and then downloaded fun root apps like titanium backup, and set cpu. I heard about custom roms and i wanted to try one. So i followed the instructions given on the website. Im sorry i dont remember what website it was that i downloaded it from. So i downloaded Clockworkmod from play store and installed it on my phone. Then copied the rom to my sd card. I tried to flash is but nothing would happen. So i tried to boot into recovery mode and i woould get a legal actions page, then my bootloader would say ***tampered*** ***locked*** ***security warning***. So then i tried to unlock my boot loader via htc dev and i got the error 160 mid not allowed. So i wanted to unroot and restore so i deleted supersu and the su files from my phone and i used root checker to check if unrooted. it said *not properly rooted*. But my phone can still view and download root apps.
Then i tried to restore my phone to stock, but when i pressed factory reset i would get the same legal actions page and my boot loader would say *tampered* *locked* *security warning*. And my att software update doesnt work. when i press on it it says htc dm has stopped and after that it does nothing when i press the button. And many apps close unsuspectingly. I would like to completely revert my phone to stock so i can start over again. thank you.
I have the HTC One X dual core usa version
i bought it at radio shack
It is on AT&T
Sounds like you might have tried to install a rom for the international version. Be thankful it didn't work.
You can't unlock via htcdev without changing your CID because AT&T is blocking it.
The version of CWM in the Play Store (ROM Manager?) is not supported for this phone and will not work.
To restore to stock, you need to flash the RUU for your current version. Check your software version in Settings.
This may come across as rude but you are obviously aware of XDAs existence since you are posting here, why on earth would you do anything to your phone without FIRST checking XDA to make sure it's kosher? I see way too many threads like this and it boggles my mind.
You guys don't want to come to XDA for help with your ROMs and mods, but as soon as you screw something up you come running to us for assistance.

First, you need to do A LOT more reading before you try to unlock your bootloader and flash ROMs. You missed a ton of steps and it is pretty clear you didn't do your homework. I am not trying to be rude, but trying to save you from ruining your phone.
Check what firmware you have. I assume 1.85 if you have root, but please check. If you want to be able to re-root your phone do not use the 2.20 RUU! Go download the RUU . Follow the instructions and run the RUU to return your phone to stock.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1670238 (1.85 RUU)
You can then start the process over with rooting and unlocking. You must have SuperCID before you can unlock your bootloader. Use TWRP and not CWR because it is not supported on the AT&T One X. You must NEVER try installing a ROM meant for the international version. (Stay in this section of the forum!) Once you root and unlock, you will not be able to download OTAs from HTC.

thankyou so much!! that was such a stupid mistake. The indian people making the videos i was watching for instructions should have been a dead giveaway that it was for the international version!! again thank you so much. so where can i download RUU and instructions. and if you can what would be the best way to root and unlock bootloader for my version of the phone?

I edited my reply and included two links. First is to the 1.85 RUU. Make sure you don't have 2.20 by going to Settings -> About -> Software Information and look at Software Number. As long as you don't have 2.20, download that RUU, plug your phone in, and run it. IT WILL ERASE EVERYTHING! so make sure to back up the contents of your SD card first.
The second link is to the AT&T One X resource Roll-up. Everything you need to root/unlock/rom will be in there.
The steps are in this order:
1. Root using the 1.85 root
2. Get SuperCID
3. Go to HTCDev.com to get unlock token, flash unlock token, unlock bootloader
4. Flash recovery (TWRP)
5. Flash ROM
Make sure you read ALL of the instructions first!! And I would recommend CleanROM once you get that far.
Disclaimer: I am not responsible if you mess up your phone.

Good point! I just automatically do that every time I flash a rom so I always forget to include that as an additional step. But that will save a lot of time if anything goes wrong.

Although the answer is already in this thread, if I were you, I would take this time to use the search and find out what an RUU is and what it does. You are going to use them many times in the future so might as well know.

You should see all the skyrocket users coming to the i777 forums saying they bricked and have no idea why... Probably by flashing a rom for the wrong phone....

As long as you flashed 1.85 then the root script will work. You may have to manually set the day ahead and try again a few times. Read the thread. Search the thread. Your answers are probably in there.

So you run the one click method, it tells you to try to run the AT&T software update, and your phone does nothing? That is what is happening?

yes when i press check for updates nothing happens. im not sure if this is the reason but after the RUU was done and my phone was put back to stock, a popup for att software update came up and it downloaded and i had the update. i went to about then software info the software number is 1.85 so i am very confused.

Can you update hboot without updating stock ROM?

Hey guys, I just got 2 HTC Sensation 4Gs off of Craigslist, they are both still running Gingerbread. I want to root and custom rom, but I'm aware that I cannot install newer ICS+ ROMs without updateing the hboot.
My question is, is it easier to HTC Dev Unlock, root, s-off, Super CID, and THEN update the hboot. Or update the phone with the official ICS update (thus also updating the hboot) and THEN HTC Dev Unlock, root, s-off, Super CID?
I've already had experience rooting and s-off(ing) 2 ICS sensations, but don't know if I could do it easier if I don't update them first.
If it is easier to update the hboot after rooting Gingerbread, can you point me in the right direction?
Thanks.

Hi,
If you intend to s-off on GB ,then, do NOT go to HTCDEV
S-off using revolutionary.
Look HERE
Everything is listed in order.
Then, update the firmware/radio HERE , using the 3.33 Universal firmware.
Then,install custom ROM.
Thanks! Exactly what I wanted. question though, is the latest 3.33 okay to use on T-Mobile? Or is there a more T-Mobile optimised version I should use?

It says enter Serial Number on Revolutionary IO. Does it mean the S/N beneath the battery or the IMEI? Both are getting accepted and I'm being given 2 different keys. I'm pretty confident that it means the S/N so that's what i'm going to try. Is that correct?

Maybe I need an SD in the phone?

Hi,
Yes,you need a sd card.
It is far easier to s-off with revolutionary,so it is worth the effort to find the correct drivers, and re-install them(and reboot the pc)
Also try different usb slots, and a different cable if you have one.

Okay, thanks. I'll also try doing it in Linux Mint. I'll let you know if I need more help.
But one last question. In step one it says:
1. Run the revolutionary Utility you just downloaded from http://revolutionary.io/ and if it has found your device it should read
"Found your Device: HTC Sensation Z710* Applications -> Development)
It doesn't say to plug in the phone, which is a given, or what mode it needs to be in?
THEN it says to do it again but this time plug in the phone, in normal mode, and set it to HTC sync

No, I plug the phone in and then start the utility. It wouldn't find it though so I uninstalled and re-installed the drivers. But I can't restart my PC right now. In 90 minutes I can though. (watching a live stream with family)

Ugh, my PC is saying that USBcoinstaller.dll is missing. Any idea how to get it? I can't find it by searching google.
Maybe I have to download the android SDK. Didn't need to before when I rooted my ICS sensation a few months ago. But maybe I have to for gingerbread.

I'm trying that to. Hopefully it'll get it working.

Okay, I'm having problems. I tried following [GUIDE] (For Noobs) SDK, ADB, and Drivers and now my ADB isn't working!
I tried downloading and installing the recommended SDK zip and it wasn't giving me the files he said it would, then I installed revision 9 and 15 because it said it neded them, they ended up bringing "Platform-tools" which contains another ADB.exe, and it won't let me delete it. I tried installing the latest HTC Sync and it doesn't find my phone. It still gives me the error about USBCoInstaller.dll I am going to reboot my PC but I honestly don't know what I did or how to fix it. Everytime I start any ADB including revolutionary.exe it pops open does a TON of text for a split second and then closes again. Any Suggestions after I reboot?
Edit: actually revolutionary.exe pops open and closes quickly without displaying anything.
My brother fixed it. apparently I want thinking about the fact that HTC sync can't be installed. And the driver wasn't completely installed, which he solved as well. So we're now using revolutionary.

[Q] Help returning to stock recovery

Hi Guys,
I know this may be frustrating for some of you, but as a complete beginner in using Android, I was wondering whether someone could help me out here. I have tried searching various forums, but my knowledge of androids is limited. I used the tutorial from Rootwiki to successfully unlock my bootloader, install TWRP recovery and root my phone
Does this mean I am not using a stock rom?
Now I sort of regret deciding to do this and would like to return to stock so that I can get any OTA updates without further tampering with my phone. Unfortunately while following the above tutorial, I only made a backup after TWRP was installed and not before, so I need help in going back please.
I can see that there are a few people in my position, so I'm sure others will benefit from this as well.
My software details are:
Android version - 4.2.2.
Software number - 1.33.206.1
HTC SDK API level - 5.41
Network - o2 uk
Can I use any stock recovery file or does it have to be specific to the above?
Can you please provide a step by step guide with a list of files that I will need to download?
or can I simply just factory reset my phone, and everything goes back to normal? I don't mind having to re install apps etc?
Thank you all very much
i have a HTC One mini 4.3 and i am in the exact same situation. i like to get stock recovery but those ive tried hasent been working.
If you didint flash a rom after you installed your recovery, the back up you made is then of stock os
Maybe if you take the ota, it will cancel out ur root and five you stock recovery back, i havent browsed these forums.. Try searching for a RUU and stock recovery, the phone is fairly new, so can take time for someone to put something together

Ok guys, I got the notification for the OTA update today, I have downloaded it but haven't installed it. From a different thread, I found a link for a stock recovery which is about 9.5mb from androidfile host (/?fid=23252070760975668)
can I just flash this recovery and proceed with the update? or will there be compatibility issues with the version I have above?
Thanks
Anyone?
I am getting desperate to the point that I might actually pay HTC to repair it for me

Yep, just doing it for the update, I only rooted my phone in the first place to get rid of bloatware, which i realised is a lot more complicated than just rooting, and all the other benefits of rooting don't really appeal to me, or are too much hassle for a beginner such as myself.
Just need to figure out how to unroot and relock my bootloader before I can go ahead with this :s
Hey nelvinchi. You seem to be knowledgeable enough on the matter and have been looking for help with my device. I posted a separate thread yesterday. If you have time/think you can help, could you take a look? Would much appreciate it.

If you have SuperSU installed on your phone, the app has a settings option called "Full unroot" - this will get rid of root. Relocking your bootloader - there are various methods, you could try HTCDEV site (probably how you unlocked originally), or the revone option which will lock the bootloader and remove the "tampered" label. Try a search, but if you are unsure, jusk ask!

Got everything sorted with the great help of Nelvin. I had previously gone to the twrp support IRC and after answering a few questions, they just stopped talking... Glad there are people out there still willing to help! He spent a good hour or so with me making sure everything was working.

Thanks for your reply nelvinchi, can I just confirm whether the SuperSU app you're talking about it the one by Chainfire in the marketplace? And is it just a matter of installing this from the marketplace to unroot my device, or is it a bit more complicated than that?
I'll do some research on relocking my bootloader with revone.
Also do you reckon the above method of getting the stock recovery from my update file will work?
Thanks for your help

If you are rooted then you more than likely have supersu already installed. Check your app drawer.I rooted using HTC DEV and supersu was flashed to the phone with twrp as part of the process

Can I make a suggestion? Given where you are with your phone currently, It would be much simpler, and virtually risk free, to flash tr1gg3r's Stock Sense 5.5 4.3 rooted deodexed rom from the One Mini Android Development forum.
You will get the 4.3 update, and have a fast and very stable ROM. All future updates will be incorporated into a newer ROM version.
Returning to "stock" carries FAR more risk - and you'll never have true stock because it isn't possible. Soon as the bootloader is unlocked, your phone is tampered, and no tool or utility can change that (other than cosmetically!)
It's your choice obviously, but if I was you, I'd stay rooted and enjoy the benefits it brings!
If you still want to try to go back to stock, I'll help..... But I've now helped three members get out of a soft brick after they attempted to go stock.......
