Howdy all, I'm sure this might have been done before however I have been bored today since my gf is on vacation with her family and made a custom boot image for my nexus. I'm going to try to add Nexus text in there somewhere, once I find one that I like. Its very simple and very small, I've just always been a big fan of the matrix
Anyway its fullscreen not partial, blue matrix code. Its in a zipfile so it must be pushed to the phone. Remember to back-up your current if you push this file.
how?

Hi. I love it. Where do I push it to?
Thanks

Unless you are running the kang o rama froyo rom, make a folder called bootanimation on your sd card and put the zip in there.
Or using root explorer navigate to data/local and paste in there, be sure and back up your stock or already custom image.

Would you happen to have or be able to make the original Green Matrix code bootanimation? That would bee so awesome.
Sure can, I'll get after that today.

dude how do i make a boot image? i was thinking about making one like a bomb going off...or pacman or something
Its rather easy actually, all your image files must be .png format and in a folder how you want them to run, then you need a desc.txt stating resolution, frames per second and if you want it to loop or not, as well as the folder name you want it to run, all that must then be zipped up with no compression and placed in data local

I went through all these steps, but I still can't get it to work. This is the first time I'm trying to change my boot animation so I might be missing something.
I unzipped the file and placed it in data/local using root explorer. I'm running stock froyo with custom recovery.
Any help would be great, thanks.
EDIT: I got it! Thanks.
Hello. I am aware that I can use adb to change my boot animation but I also heard that you can use boot explorer as well but I am not sure how. Can anyone explain? Thanks.

You should be able use Root Explorer to copy the VZW_bootanimation.zip and replace the old one in the \system\customize\resource\ folder then reboot.
May be a product of my Virtuous ROM, but my HW Rev 003 SLCD Dinc has it in /system/media/ Just rename the existing to bootanimation.old and copy a new one in using Root Explorer and it took and ran.
Uh, I have skyraider. In skyraider the old one was in the system/media folder but when I replaced it, nothing happened. Anyone with skyraider?

Ensure you select "mount as R/W" before you try to replace it.
Make sure your new zip file has the exact same name as the old one.
Extract your new zip contents and compare it to the old zip contents to ensure you have all the required files. It should have a text file labeled "desc.txt" and at least one folder labeled "part0".
The text file is basically instructions for how to display the folder contents (which are bunch of png's) so that they make up an animation.
Good luck my friend.
Well, I tried replacing both the shutdown and the boot one and neither worked. The shutdown one is just a blank screen while the boot is still the same. One thing to note though is that the boot screen isn't the Droid eye one but the one with the android dancing. I thought that was supposed to go away after the first boot so that may be a problem. Thanks for the help so far
Hey guys, I have been told to post this here as I have not made enough posts..
I tried to change my boot animation, by placing the bootanimation.zip file in both /system/media and /data/local and all still plays the Samsung boot logo although with no sound.. So searched through the forums here and everyone tells you that you need a custom rom to get it to work if your phone has the /system/media/bootsamsung.qmg file...
I then cooked a package from romkitchen and installed that but have the same issue, even though I can see the bootanimation.zip file in /system/media/ I can also still see the bootsamsung.qmg as well.
I have only just got this phone about a week ago, so have searched thoroughly, in case I was missing something but i don't think I am..
Can someone help me with what’s going on?
No one able to help me with this one?
Hm you should easily be able to change bootanimation with the rom kitchen.
Remember that you can not change the white text at the beginning of the boot.
I think the files stay there, they dont get removed, just another one gets used if its present, if not the stock animation will be used.

I'm not sure if this helps, I have cooked a new one today and applied and it said to keep this log incase I have issues.

I can see the file is in the folder, it just does not seem to take affect.
I am assuming that people have got these working on i9000's before and it's just me..
I still have not managed to get this working, starting to think that I am tripping..
All it seems to do is kill the samsung boot sound.
Anyone else got any ideas?

Do you use a stock rom?
This probably doesn't work because your android is not looking for the bootanimation.zip.
Custom ROMs have a modded start up script which tells the system to look for the .zip file.
I am using a rom from rom kitchen..
I have changed it again since I made post above but still a custom rom..

Did you delete the boot animation file out of system/media,&put the new animation zip AND rename it to the same name as the one you deleted?

I have tried selecting the bootanimation from RK, and also downloading one from elsewhere and replacing the one that is there.
Both have the same effect..
Weird,I had trouble switching mine too. The only way I've been able to do it is using the app called File Explorer. It's like 10 dollars on the market, but I found it for free. I put the new zip on my card, then file explorer/system/media, delete the boot animation zip, paste the new zip & rename it to the name of the zip that was there. It's worked every time. Flashing a new splash screen is a little different....

I will try this again now and see how i go..
Just to clarify the splash screen is the white text right?
I am not trying to change that just the colored samsung animation.
The splash screen is the first screen you see when you turn your phone on. It doesn't move, & most often just says the name of the phone. Then the boot animation comes on, it moves & plays some kind of music. Do you have file explorer? If not, don't buy it,I can help you get it for free.

I have Root Explorer that I use to access that location.
I have tried another bootanimation from this spot -http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905538
I tried both of the sizes for the AndroidParticles2 and set the permissions to rw-r-r
(Renaming to bootanimations.zip and placing in system\media)
but still the samething happens.
Yeah, my bad,I meant Root Explorer. But it had to be bootanimation.zip take the s off

Sorry typo, I don't have the s on my i9000.
Well that's how I change mine. I did download a particle ring android (blue) and couldn't get it to work right. Seems to me like you're doing everything right. There's one other option I know of. Download a free program called android flasher.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=794638
You should be able to flash boot animations & splash screens with no problem. It is a .rar, so if you don't have the program you'll need to download winrar or something similar to extract & install the files. Google it, the program is free.

Thanks for your help today, at least I know now that I wasn't just doing something stupid.
Hello, I would like to install a new boot animation.
I rooted my S3, installed Rom toolbox pro and went through the different boot animations. I previewed several of them. Installed the one I liked (actually changed the size to the max size as well, hopefully this isn't the cause of the issue I'm having). and even viewed the current animation (which it actually showed the one I choose).
I then rebooted as I couldn't find any other options for confirming that I selected a new animation. However my phones original animation continues to show.
With this I did a little digging and on a youtube video someone eluded to having to move the animation to another file, but gave no direction on how to perform this task.
I can't seem to get the animation to actually install or become my boot animation. What am I doing wrong? Please help
Edit: I've looked through similar threads on this forum and while at least 1 of them had the same issue, I couldn't find a solution that fixes this issue. (unless I just completely missed it of course and in that case please just point me in the right direction)
Thank you for taking the time to look and any help you can provide
Ok, I'm really pulling my hair out here. All of the videos and instructions I have found have looked really simple (just click this button "install" and it works) whereas when I follow their "insturctions" nothing happens.
I know this is a simple process here but I am missing something.

in system/media there should be a file named bootanimation.zip overwrite it. fix permissions to match the folder/old one :good:
so the easiest way to get them from romtoolbox would be to download and move like i said. not the safest to let it install on its own.
also, half of the boot animations on there are not even in the correct dimensions. there are plenty of places on XDA and other sites where you can find WAY more , and probably in the correct size. hope this helps.
another thing : in the themes and apps section, there are even flashable boot animations. saves some of the hassle.

Thank you so much for the reply, however (as I am newer) I am stuck.
I went into system > Media and found no such file as bootanimation.zip.
I have seen this solution before, so I know others have had success with it. However it isn't there.
I have root access and I'm access this file system through rom toolbox, root browser.
There are no .zip files in that folder at all. The closest I came to is bootsamsung.qmg and bootsamsungloop.qmg
Now, I did check out the theme and app section but couldn't find this same issue there.
Thank you for your assistance.
Update:
I downloaded Root Explorer and found the file you were referring to. Another thread suggested to rename the file bootanimation_bak.zip. I thought that route was a little less evasive as it didn't really get rid of the old boot animation. However, when I did that and copied the new animation in it still registered the original animation.
So, with that said, should I follow your first instructions as to overwrite the original file or is there something else here that I'm missing?

Try renaming the original bootanimation file to bootanimation.zip.bak then move the boot animation you want to system/media and name it bootanimation.zip. If that doesn't work it might be that the rom/kernel doesn't support custom boot animations.

No dice.
I thought you were on to something here as I found the system/media folder and had to change the permission to r/w and placed the boot animation.zip into it. However my old persistent one keeps popping up.
Now maybe I'm totally skipping a whole step here that everyone is assuming I'm taking. Do I have to have a custom Rom installed? I haven't done that yet, as none of the videos I've watched had instructed to do so. I'm rooted, that's it at this point.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
Yes, the issue is the kernel not the rom. Your stock kernel is overwriting the boot animation. Considering you did do everything as the other user instructed you to do. You renamed the stock boot animation to .Bak and you renamed the one you want to play bootanimation.zip and placed it in the same folder?

Ok here are a couple screen shots of what I'm working with. I have followed every instruction through this thread.
This first shot is of the System/media folder. I pasted my new bootanimation.zip file here. Originally there was not a Bootanimation file here at all.
View attachment 2181932
This second screenshot of the Data/local folder. This is where the orginal bootanimation.zip file was located. I was instructed to rename it as Bootanimation_bak.zip and paste my new Bootanimation.zip file here. Then was suggested that I change it from "_bak.zip" to ."zip.bak". Neither suggestion worked. Then it was suggested to move my new bootanimation.zip from the Data/local folder to the system/media folder. I did so and I changed the original name back to bootanimation_bak.zip. And this is where I currently am stuck at.

Now, I haven't done anything with my bootloader. I'm wondering if that is my issue, if I need to unlock my bootloader. I didn't want to get to involved with things that I didn't understand to fast and felt that replacing my boot animation seemed simple enough. So, do I need to unlock my boot loader?
Thanks so much for all of the time and effort.
As another user mentioned the stock kernel you are using doesn't allow you to use a custom boot animation. You will have to unlock your boot loader in order to flash a custom kernel that allows you to change the boot animation.

Just make sure the kernel you flash is for your carrier and either touch wiz or aosp. If you're stock rooted it will be touch wiz. Just look through the development forums and find what works best for you. Right now I'm on bonestock rom with stock kernel but I really like Zeus kernel as well.

So i've done a thorough Google search and discovered that im not the only one who hates the smug little Samsung man that appears over all your contacts that don't have pictures, or pops up as caller ID.
I did find a post that was relevant to the old S4 which I think sent me down the right path, but i have limited knowledge in compiling and installing systems apps via adb or however.
I believe I have done the leg work, so if someone has a moment to assist in making a flashable zip or providing clear instructions to install a modified systemUI.apk, it would be greatly appreciated.
The offending picture png is located in the above mentioned SystemUI.apk. According to the post i was reading re the S4 there used to be 2 seperate system apps (Call and MMS) that contained the image, but from what i've read and been able to find in relation to the S6 is only the SystemUI.apk
I copied it out, unzipped it, and then replaced it with a random but more suitable picture. I made sure that the picture was exactly the same dimensions. Does it being a greater size cause an issue?
I then compressed it again using 7zip, set the file permission back to rw-r--r-- and.... thats as far as i got.
Im not sure how to test whether what i did is correct, or to install it via recovery as a flashable or push it through adb (i don't know the linux commands). In frustration i did try just renaming the original apk using Root Explorer, but of course immediately got a SystemUI has stopped unexpectedly (im almost positive the smug little man was laughing at me by this point) and forced reboot. Oddly upon reboot my phone functioned as per normal, with the smug little guy still mocking me, even though the SystemUI.apk had been renamed!? That stumped me. I could only think that its somehow referencing the information from somewhere else???? I dunno.
Can someone have a look at the attached and let me know if it should work and how i can try install it?
For your reference the only matching png i could find is located: SystemUI.apk\res\drawable-xxxhdpi-v4\contacts_default_caller_id_list.png
Im sure this is a MOD that the countless other smug man haters out there would appreciate as well

No, I believe there's either more to it than just swapping the png out, or the apk needs to be installed via adb seeing it's the stock rom's Ui, but I appreciate your efforts.
The app needs to be signed anyway if you unzip it and zip it again. This can be made with Android Signer or a similar app.
But...for what you want there's no need to uncompress the apk and recompress it afterwards. This procedure is needed if you want to extract or edit certain files (usually .xml files) but not for replacing a resource as a png or image.
First you should have an identically named file and the png should have same resolution (also there are certain specific png's that should be modified only by someone who knows how...so called .9 png's). Considering it's a normal one and it has same resolution (it can be sometimes of different res but phone will resize it and not always the result is what you want), just open the apk with WinRAR for ex (this is what I use) and delete tha original png then add to the archive, in the same place your png.
Should work well, no need for extracting and compressing the files again and so on and I don't advice to do that if you don't know how to sign or deal with apk's
Please note that there could be several folders were the image can be, if the image is a resource that is resolution dependant. So you might find it in hdpi, xhdpi, mdpi, xxhdpi...and similar folders. In this case you should change at least the image in the folder for your specific resolution. But I guess this is not the case since SystemUI is speciffic to a ROM and phone model and should have resources only for it's resolution setup at build time
Good luck

Hi, thanks for your response. I actually used 7zip to swap the png without extracting it, but my problem is how to replace a system apk from recovery? I have no knowledge of how to do this or make a flashable zip. Thanks in advance

Just use the same way, replace with 7zip. You only need a template flashable .zip. Ask Google for it.
Sent from my SM-G925F using Tapatalk
You can replace the file using the included file manager in TWRP (if you use this recovery). You just have to mount /system before that in order to access the file. You should find SystemUI.apk in /system/app. Alternatively, you could replace the file even with your phone started and with Android booted. Using a root file explorer like ES File Explorer, navigate to /system/app and replace SystemUI.apk there. Then reboot phone for changes to take effect. I strongly recommend to make a safe copy of the file before overwritting it
Second method is easier than the recovery one. You can also use a flashable zip, you can make one yourself by using a flashable zip 'template', that is an empty zip made for flashing in which you just put the files you need to be copied along with their complete path. A quick search will give you several such zip files,I'm on mobile right now and I can't make the flashable zip for you

Thanks for the info Rapier. I tried using root explorer to swap it, but as soon as I renamed the original systemui.apk I got a force close error (because the system was obviously running systemui.apk) and I was forced to do a reset to clear the error off the screen.
After rebooting, the apk had be renamed but the system was still chugging along regardless of the fact that this systemui.apk effectively wasn't even there anymore. It was showing as systemui.bak, what I renamed it to. I tried going ahead and putting the modified apk in the directory anyway, rebooted, and nothing. No change to the png whatsoever, even though the png I used was showing in the correct spot and all.

Thanks for the tip, I didn't know there were just templates available. I'll give it a shot, but by the way it's behaving when I've just replaced the file using a root explorer, I think there's more to it eg. The apk I modified isn't functional or something

If you still see the image after replacing the file, it could be that it is not stored only in systemui. It could be in the dialer/phone apk as well or in the framework-res.apk. I saw the little figure you wanna change in several places across the ROM, including in the S-Health app...it is used I think everywhere where there is no picture set for an avatar. It can be that the one you found is for something else

Damn, but you're probably right. If I decide to pursue this annoying smug little man, am I at least doing it right?
I mean in theory; replacing the png with another of the same dimensions (does size matter?) and as long as I've swapped it out of the apk rather than extracting and compressing again, set the permissions the same and replacing any apk I come across with the new image, it should work yes?
Someone suggested using an overlay function? Would that be easier?
I couldn't find the phone apk for the S6, do you know where I should be looking?
Thanks for all your advice with this!
Sent from my SGP611 using XDA-Developers mobile app
Yes, you're right, if you replace the correct png you should get rid of it.
I was involved in several projects in the past, theming as well as building or porting ROMs so I can help with what I know.
You asked about resolution and yes it does matter. In apk's you might find the png stored in folders dependant on display res and named accordingly: LDPI, MDPI, HDPI, XHDPI, XXHDPI and so on. You MUST change the png in the correct folder or else you won't see any change. If for ex you change the png in MDPI folder and our phone is XXXHDPI...you won't see a change. Also the dimension of the png's differs with each res so it is not ok to just put the same resolution file in all folders. There are several guidelines to be followed when dealing with such images and when replacing resources. I think our phone is XXXHDPI or XXHDPI...not really sure cause I never checked but you can find this info easily. After you find out which it is the right res, replace only the png's in that coresponding folder and leave the others alone.
You might want start looking for that image in the phone/people apk and in the framework-res.apk. Be VERY careful what you do with the framework as it's a main component of the ROM...mess with it and you'll have to reflash the ROM
