Since the update to ICS mail has been using a lot of background cellular data, about 6GB/mo, had anyone else had this issue and know of a fix?
I have 3 IMAP accounts setup, they're set to check new mail every 2hrs and only download the first 50kb.
The total mailbox size of all 3 accounts combined is 2.8gb on the server, so it seems the stock mail app is downloading the whole mailbox several times a month...
Any help finding a fix before my carrier whinge at me would be appreciated.
Its a stock sensation, unrooted.

that's impressive. Youre getting this 6gb figure from the data usage section in settings? I'm at about 300kb after a couple weeks and im using IMAP
(admittedly you probably get a lot more emails than me if youre getting those kind of figures)
IMAP doesnt (or shouldnt) download the messages to the phone until you open them manually. I hope someone can help you with this! must be another process. im assuming this has shown on your data usage from your carrier as well?
:edit:
oh and at 50kb each, 6gb = 120,000 emails ;-)
Getting the figure from the usage section in settings on my phone, which corrisponds with the usage measured by my carrier.

And in there it actually says Mail (or w/e mail app your using) is using 6 GB. Sure it's not something like the play store that is downloading updates
6 GB!?! That's not normal
Hi, if you go to settings, you have usage.
In that section you can check which application is actually eating your data.
If this is actually the email, I'd suggest to recreate your email account.
I have 2 email accounts (exchange for work and hotmail configured as exchange also) and I have less than 200 megas/month.

Yep, see attached.
I've deleted and re-created the email accounts twice over the last month and a half and it's still doing it. Also tried setting up as POP3 and IMAP - seems to make no difference to the data usage. Everything was fine until the ICS update.
Also, I've noticed that if I load a mailbox and press "Refresh" to get any new mail since the last check, it sometimes returns new mail instantly, other times it takes a while - perhaps downloading the whole inbox? Although this would be counted as "foreground" data usage, right? Which is only showing as 30MB for the month...
Guessing no-one else has this issue? Still burning through 150-200MB per day :-(
Just incase anyone else stumbles across this problem. I've found that adding more than 2 email accounts is a no-no.
If I have 2 accounts setup (any 2 accounts), it's fine, uses a few hundred KB/day, as soon as I add a third (again, any - doesn't seem to be account specific), the mail app starts chomping through 200MB per day.
So I've setup the main 2 accounts I use in the built-in mail app, then an account I don't use often I've added to k-9 mail. Life is good again.

Is it just me, or are other Captivate users having problems with the email not updating? I have my email set to check for new emails once an hour, but I only rarely get notifications that I have a new message. I have to check my email manually most of the time.
Also, I never kill the email app so it is running all of the time.

I guess I am using the default email app... I assumed it was a standard android app on all android phones. I like the app because I can have multiple email accounts in one place.
So is this a touch wiz app? Or is it an android app?

The only problem I'm having with my email is with my corporate exchange account on both my Vibrant and Captivate.
I will get notifications about mail sent to my inbox, but I have rules set up to help organize my inbox, ex. mail from engineering dpt goes to a folder, and emails about project updates from group abc and xyz go to another folder.
I don't get notifications OR email for those emails unless I go into that specific folder and hit refresh, and then I get all those emails.
Although sometimes I will get mail notifications 7 Unread Emails but there won't be any in my inbox, nor will there be any in the folders.

Where might one find such a thing? I'm not having any issues right now, but have run into e-mail FC issues which were resolved by removing and re-creating the e-mail accounts. If a simple delete of cache data will fix it that would be a faster solution.

I have only had my at&t Captivate for a few days, and I have noticed that my email client runs about 4 emails behind. When me IMAP server receives an email the email client sees it and notifies me, and if I'm watching it I can see the email for a split second, but it removes it from the client. I won't be able to see that email until I get another email on my IMAP server (4 emails behind).
I saw on this thread that someone had better luck with K9 client, so I loaded it to try. I am seeing the same basic results, except that when a new email comes in I can see it till the client polls again. Then the new one disappears and is replaced with the most next email in my account, staying 4 emails behind.
I can check this at any time by looking at my webmail or my iPad.
Can any tell me how to clear out the cache? I have completely deleted the email account and reconfigured the account with same results. I believe it is an OS issue.
Thanks!

To clear cache, from home screen:

Scroll down to Email. Click it and clear cache. I've never actually seen anything in there on my phone, however.
On another note, I did find that ATK (Advanced Task Killer) was correlated with emails hanging in my Outbox and not sending for my Exchange Server account. I put Email on the ATK Ignore list and that solved it. (I'm only using the ATK widget to kill things like when I exit a program and GPS keeps running, but even that seemed to screw up my email.)

Hi guys,
I'd like to ask for recommendation on an email client for android which could handle at least three email account with total of ~6000 emails and rouhgly 3GB of data.
I've tried already a few but all of them seem to either crash or stop responding once I start synchronizing.
Basicaly I want to have a 1:1 sync of my email accounts in my phone - why not to use it, if the phone has 16GB of storage space??
Many thanks in advance for your tips

You say you've already tried some but you don't state which, it would be better for you if you did. The only 2 email clients that I have found useful are 'Enhanced email' and 'K9 mail' I have no idea whether they would fullfil your requirements though as that is a F*@K load of emails.
I use K9. I don't quite have as many emails as you, but over the 4 or 5 accounts I use it's ~800 emails using ~1Gb of space on my sd card.
Yes, K9 did stop responding - alert popped up asking for force clsoure, I said wait and waited .... After a few tries it gradually synced them all and works fine now.
Did you try Profimail? https://market.android.com/details?id=com.lonelycatgames.ProfiMail
In so many years of being developed for WinMo/Symbian, one could hope it's got some robust code.
That's a darn good question and would depend on the device's RAM and available JAVA Heap memory. You can download a trial of my app "Enhanced Email" from my website -> http://quantumsolutions.us
Okay, I think I discovered Yahoo Mail as a major cause of battery drain on my Charge. First some background. At one point early on with the Charge I had great results of 20+ hours. That was shortly after setting up Humble and ImNuts Kernal, calibrating the battery, and installing basic apps.
As many of us do, I kept on tweaking from there. I tried various combinations of Imoseyon's kernal, EP1Q modem, and V6 supercharger and related scripts. At some point in the process I lost the battery life. I started getting 6-8 hours max! Of course at the same time I kept working on getting the "perfect" app setup. All this tweaking meant I couldn't tell what started the problem.
Anyway, I've since undone V6, gone back to PBJ kernal, and restored EE4's modem. I thought I noticed some improvement, but really it was no more than a couple hours more than before. Maybe 8-10 hours total.
So, I started thinking about how Data usage kills my battery at work. I get a very weak signal and it absolutely kills the battery. But still, I was able to get up to 20 hours before, even leaving data turned on. So, I wondered if anything was causing it to work extra hard to send/receive vs before.
Long story shortened (a little). I considered the Yahoo Mail app with it's "push only" setup. This is something I didn't have setup right away. I'd used the built in email. So, after disabling "Notifications" in my account and re-enabling the built-in mail notifications, I've recovered my battery life! Today I've been going 15 hours and I've still got 31%. And that was with fairly heavy use and leaving data on all day!
I stress that the Yahoo Mail setting is the only thing I've changed since last week. I've been very patient to make one change at a time so I could track this down properly.
So, anyone with primarily weak signals care to test this theory as well? I really feel this did it, but could use some confirmation considering all the previous variables. I'll do some further testing myself this week. Maybe a day with and a day without. It's difficult not to just jump to GummyCharged 2.0, but I really want to confirm this issue first.
Some confirmation can be found by googling the issue: "yahoo mail android battery drain". Hope this may help someone else.
Yes I have notice this too. I live in a non 4g fringe 3 g area and my battery drains fast as well. Yes I have yahoo mail and have since uninstalled it and have the stock email app pull my mail from yahoo. Also any app like yahoo messenger also runs in the back ground and no matter how much u do a force off, it restart a few mins later. Here is a list of app that run in the background.
A. Yahoo mail
B. Yahoo messenger
C. Live holdem poker.
D. Maps
E. Gallery
F. Gmail
G. Stock email app
H. Music
I. Search
And of all the rest of the stock functions. I wish that most of these apps would only run when you launch them and when you close it, they would stay shut off untill needed. Freezing the apps work but you cant use them until u unfreeze them. I know that this is done for a reason, so that there would be no lag. So I guess these are some of the things we have to live with.
One of the big mistakes samsung did with the charge is not install enuff onboard memory. So when you have all these programs running it does cause a lag and massive battery drain on our phone. As far as the data connection, I can not complain about the phone cause this is a problem that BIG RED is causing an additional drain on the battery. The mighty no connection and searching for service LOL..
END RANT..

Glad to see it's not just me. You'd think a "push" service would use less battery, but in the case of yahoo mail it seems the opposite.
I'm not as worried about ram usage as network usage though. With a custom rom it seems fairly responsive. It's the network use that I wish we had more fine control over at the system level. If I could just make some of the offending apps act less aggressively that would be great.
In fact, I wish the OS had a smart signal monitoring feature that could tell apps to throttle back until a strong signal was available.

I noticed this too. It was causing a huge drain! The only reason I got the yahoo mail app was because the stock mail app wouldn't let me sign in to my yahoo account. Does anybody know the reason for this? It worked less than a week ago...

The stock mail app is working fine for me. Never had trouble logging in. Maybe try from a computer to see if it needs to verify your account or something?
So far today I am using 5% per hour with yahoo's app disabled and very heavy usage of phone and screen. During one hour with little use it only used 2%. Very acceptable. I'll try turning yahoo on for the afternoon and see the difference.

What i did is uninstall the yahoo mail app and load the stock email app, you can do all the same stuff with the stock email app as you can with yahoo mail. Also I found that the email app that comes preloaded with the gc 2.0 has issue with yahoo, and other email accounts ( Iam sure other people did not have this problem but i was one of few that did. So please dont flame me and say that iam the only one with this problem). What i did is pull the stock app off my tablet and installed this one on my phone, all problems are gone, i can receive and now repley, create and send my emails. I can now easily setup all of my email accounts, aol-yahoo-comcast, etc. If you can pull the stock email app that was preloaded on the phone before you modded or install any custom rom/themes. Also if you have yahoo messenger installed, get rid of it. I found that between the yahoo mail and messenger app my battery life was almost cut in half.
Ya I'm running gc 2.0 with the same problem. Any way you could post a link of the stock app?

Update
So, I finished my testing:
Yahoo Mail app notifications turned off:
Used 35% battery in first 6 hours of day with heavy use of phone
Yahoo Mail app notifications turned on:
Used 55% battery in next 6 hours of day with very light use of phone
So, simply enabling the Yahoo Mail app notifications increased my battery use more than 50% per hour. This is even though I went from heavy usage before the change to practically no usage after the change.
Needless to say, I'll be leaving Yahoo Mail notifications off and let the built in e-mail app notify me. Which it does a very fine job of by the way. It's still "push" even.
So, I'm wondering how to find other offending apps. I'd have thought Spare Parts would tell me, but apparently Yahoo Mail was hiding its network usage behind some other title. Perhaps it's lumped under Dialer or one of the mysterious user ID's that show up (1043, I think?).
Anyone know of another network usage watchdog type app for our phones that might shed more light?

Go into your system/app folder and delete the stock email app that you have installed. Of course by deleting this you may/may not lose all of your accounts you have setup. Then download the link and install this one ( also make sure you rename the app to Email.apk ) i dont think you have too, but if you have a problem installing it, try it, you never know). Problem is since you allready have the email app installed, it will not let you install another one. I know this to work, for i have tried several different version that have been floating around these site, and they are all the same version, So i pulled the stock email app that i have on my Gtab and used that one on my Charge and it works great. push/pull-reply-create all works now, as well as being able to create all email accounts that i have without any issues. Just make sure once you have installed that you restart your phone for all to take into effect. Look at the app page on the phone and make sure you have the white envolope w/green @ symbol on it. If you do and you launch the app you should have a page loaded that has all the different email accounts that you can use to automatically setup. Just enter you [email protected] account and the password and then click next and if all setup correctly it will prompt you to pick a nickname and name to use for that account. Finished.. LOL

Hi folks,
The native email app on my Verizon Galaxy S III is setup for POP3 send/receive with my ISP account, just as I've configured on prior phones. When it "syncs" email, anything in my Inbox on the phone literally disappears and new email is downloaded and shown in the Inbox. Sometimes, email sits on the phone for a day then is erased on the next synch.
I've tried turning off synch for this POP3 email under Settings -> Accounts, which seems to keep the Inbox populated longer than an hour or less, but nothing prevents emails from being removed up to a day after being received.
This behavior is unwanted and seems a bug - exact thing happens on our other GS3.
Ideas welcome.
UPDATE: I found a repeatable scenario for this symptom and reported it to Verizon Technical Support. This seems specific to email programs based on the stock ICS code for this phone. I have purchased Kaiten email as a workaround option (it's very good, IMHO - K-9 email is the earlier, still-free version of Kaiten, if you are interested to try).
- ooofest
The included email application also irks me as well; even when I set it to sync ONLY my inbox, it floods me with email from all my other folders, including the junk folder... And to top it off, it syncs waaay more than I tell it too..
Anyways back to your problem, have you tried clearing the email application's data? Perhaps starting fresh with the application might be what you need.
To do that, just to Settings -> Application Manager > Look for 'Email' , press it, and then hit "Clear Data".
When you launch email after that, it will be as if you first opened the application.
Hope that helps..
Thanks, we've tried clearing, deleting/reinstalling the accounts, etc. and no go. I've setup these same POP3 accounts on multiple devices in the past for all sorts of email clients and this is the first to wipe out prior emails before my eyes.
Email should be rather basic and is kind of essential, so a bug like this is odd.
I also don't understand what the Settings -> Accounts -> Email -> Synch checkbox is supposed to do in this case, since the Email app has settings to check for new email every 15 minutes and does so if I uncheck that box in the phone's Settings.
Unfortunately, I haven't found another email client - pay or free - which has a decent interface in comparison to this basic app. It seems stupid to pay for such a basic feature, so I'll phone this in to Verizon as another complaint about the phone (i.e., it won't be the first, unfortunately - I'm hoping this feedback gets to Samsung eventually), but am willing to try other clients just to get a clear, basic interface and solid operation.

Well, if your phone is rooted (it is much easier to do it now in less than five minutes), then you could also replace the stock email application with the aosp email application. It'S the email application that's on pure android. I find it much better than the included app.

Yeah, I've been avoiding root - even with the new procedure - in case the phone needed to go back in due to any h/w issues, since I had WiFi oddness in the first week (which has since gone away . . . even more odd). Just didn't feel like going through unrooting, etc. if returnable issues continued.
It might be what I need to do, though it can't hurt to give Verizon a call and report this app behavior.

Yes, though this happens within 24 hours for both of our GS3 phones, despite the "Sync" values in Settings for each account.
I am literally seeing the emails disappear before my eyes on refreshes, as they don't even go into Trash. Something seems awfully amiss.

Don't forget to thank the op of that thread (too )
I decided to root the Galaxy S III (with the quick method), deleted the shipped email and exchange apps, installed the AOSP versions from ICS and . . . emails disappear from the InBox even faster, now. So, there's something odd going on, here.
I found a copy of the Verizon stock image for our phones, researched how to convert and mount the system.img.ext4 file contained therein, pulled out the Samsung SecEmail and Exchange .apk and .odex files, then recopied them into /system/app. Rebooting had my Samsung email working again, bugs and all.
So, now I'm going to unroot and call Verizon Support. Titanium backup had a backup of these apps, but when I uninstalled the apps from the phone . . . it also deleted the backups, apparently. Hm.
Thanks.

Definitely freaky behavior! I don’t have a phone with POP3 in front of me so I may not have the menu wording exact. I found that if you change Amount of Mail to Sync to “1 Month or 100 Emails” (it was the last option in the drop down box) it corrects the deleted email problem.
Hope this helps,
BigK52
I dont know if you want to go through this or not. I was having serious email issues also. stuff deleting, not receiving, not pushing...etc. I was rooted with a newly flashed Rom and thought maybe it was the Rom causing the issues. Everything on the Rom was working perfectly except this. I also use my email for work so it was important that it work correctly. I had just spent several hours setting my phone up but decided to wipe clean again and reflash. In my set up with Bean V5 it asks if I wanted to restore any emails already set up. the first time I pressed yes, this time I bypassed and instlled everything and prcedded manually not using auto. Everythign went through fine and my email and the rest of the software seems to be working just fine. It was a lot of work and wasted time but hopefully it will be worth it if all works well. Just a thought.

Definitely freaky behavior! I don’t have a phone with POP3 in front of me so I may not have the menu wording exact. I found that if you change Amount of Mail to Sync to “1 Month or 100 Emails” (it was the last option in the drop down box) it corrects the deleted email problem.

Thanks, it was one of the early options I tried here (actually, went with various values), but both phones still delete Inbox emails within 24 hours.
Yes, definitely freaky behavior.

When I reinstalled the default Samsung email + Exchange APKs after backing out the AOSP versions, I went through "Manual" configuration this time . . . we'll see if that matters, but it really shouldn't. Thanks for the suggestion.

Ouch, it's still not working? If manually setting the settings doesn't work, perhaps it is an issue with the email service you are using... If there is a web interface for your email service, perhaps you have a setting for deleting a message after a certain amount of time or after you view a message. Perhaps that's the case?
Just a thought, I hope in the end it all works out for you
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
Yeah, it's rather odd. I tried our Droid Incredible, Incredible 2 and Galaxy Tab (all on Gingerbread) yesterday, with no problems retaining our POP3 emails.
Seems to be a POP3 issue related to the ICS email client. Testing with a Play email replacement today . . .

OK, while on the phone with Verizon Support, I figured out a repeatable problem scenario:
Setup a POP3 account using the default Email app
Pull down emails from your server using POP3. There will be new emails in your phone's local Inbox and you can do anything you like with them (i.e., all functionality is enabled and operates as expected).
At this point, you can sync/refresh the Inbox for your POP3 account as much as you want and the emails you downloaded remain local to the phone.
Delete some or all of the previously downloaded emails from the server. This happens sporadically in our case, because only our PCs delete emails from the mail server at various points in the day, but our phones poll for new emails every 15 minutes.
You can still sync/refresh the Inbox for your POP3 account as much as you want and the emails you downloaded remain local to the phone.
Send a new email to your account, i.e., place a new email on the server.
Refresh your account's Inbox on the phone by either re-opening the closed Email program or hitting the little refresh circle in the upper right corner while viewing the Inbox.
Your new email will be downloaded from the server. And, all emails that were deleted from the server will disappear from your Inbox.
So, the local Inbox disappearances only happen for emails that were deleted from the server, during a synch that brings a new email to the Inbox from that same POP3 server.
I reported this scenario to Verizon Technical Support for submission to Samsung.
There may be other repeatable scenarios which cause local Inbox emails to disappear from the stock Email app, but I am not yet aware of them.
They had another report of the same issue, with only recommended workaround being the installation of a new POP3-supporting Email app (they suggested K-9).

I can tell you K9 won't work, either. It also deletes all your emails that aren't on the server once you sync just as the stock app does, however I didn't try K9 with the stock email app deleted so who knows? I guess I'll give it a try with the stock app deleted and report back.
I'll be following this thread, meanwhile I'll probably re-activate my Thunderbolt or my old BlackBerry because, unfortunately, I cannot live with this bug.
UPDATE: Use Titanium BU to remove email app(s), reboot and install Aqua Mail, it retains emails after they are deleted on the server!
This means TOUGH LUCK, ebay people, my Galaxy S3 is NOT FOR SALE!

I've moved to the purchased Kaiten email app - from the author of K-9 - and it works great. Respects the settings for each account and there have been no unexpected actions. UI is solid, too.

Hi guys.
I am using built-in mail app but have a serious problem.
It's kinda a bit complicated.
I set up my company's mail account
But my company's mail account has only 200MB of capacity.
When it is almost full mail app stops working.(Not completely fulled, almost fulled)
When the mail box is completely fulled, one single new mail will automatically delete the oldest mail in the server.
Therefore, there is no problem actually.
But the problem is right here.
When the mail box is almost fulled it stops working.
There is no new mail anymore.
Then I manually delete old mails in the company's server using laptop.
But even when the capacity became less than 50% built-in mail app still isn't working.
Which means, once 'almost fulled' issue happens, the mail app doesn't work anymore.
Company's mail server is still receiving new mails but the mail app isn't.
I delete the account and set up from the beginning again, then it works well................
I guess it would be very difficult to find someone who has the similar problem like mines.
Because no company gives you only 200MB mail account in 21st century......... damned it.
But I really want to solve this stupid problem.
I can't delete the account and set it up from the beginning every month!
If someone has any problem with the mail app and has found out the solution,
please share.
Thank you so much!
