Ok so is the factory task manager the only way to kill apps? I hate having to click off each app individually cause if I click kill all it will kill important apps like my alarm clock. I used to have advance task killer but it was eating my battery. Any suggestions?

I havent verified if it actually kills the app or not, but if you hit the recent apps button (bottom right capacitive button) and swipe up on an application it removes it from that screen. Like i said though i havent checked if it kills the process the same as task manager does though.

Pretty sure this method is dependent on the app and whether it's programmed to run in the background or not. For example, if you do the swipe-up method with the Facebook application, the process is still running in the background. Other than a Task Killer, I'd imagine the only way is to go into the Applications menu under Settings, click on the task in question, and then click "Force Stop".

I'm curious, what apps are you trying to kill? Are they ones you use often or are they ones you don't use at all?
If you use them frequently, or even occasionally, it is best to just let the OS handle it.

If you don't use them at all then you can just go to "Manage applications" and "Disable" them.

Is there any way to take the ATK action of actually killing apps (whatever activity is engaged when you click on the ATK widget icon) and apply it to a different icon. For example Desktop Visualizer can use any image or icon and tie it to any app or activity. Was wondering what the actual atk activity is(if it even is one) when you hit the green dude.

Sure but why do you use ATK? It's not really that good for your phone.
Task killers were good back in the day of 1.6. You don't need them now as android stores unused apparently in memory without using CPU. It actually uses more energy to close out of memory and restart an app.

actually, holding home on the g2x brings up the recently used apps for faster transition. its not used to end/kill apps. just to switch between 8 recently used apps.

I don't know if either of you understand his question. The vibrant, stock, would bring up recently used apps like most other android phones, but also had a button on that "recent apps" pop-up that took you to the built in task manager that touchwiz had. This would allow you to kill any programs that were still actively running in the background.
I don't have an answer for your question though, sorry. I think that's a touchwiz only(and possibly sense) thing.

Active Applications in the market. Its free.
Its exactly like the vibrsnts task manager.
And don't worry about defending yourself to these people.
They did not understand my love for the vibrants task manager.
They ALL ripped me
But you want to be able to kill task like browser which does not close with the back button like other apps.
Yet leave the apps that would reopen alone. Just like the OFFICIAL Samsung task manager.

Actually doesn't CM7 have the ability to choose which program launches on long presses? I don't use task managers but I'm pretty sure I played with those in a long time.
Outside of CM7, I know there are other sneaky apps in the market to achieve the same effect.
On my cheap android tablet I bought for my son, he had the habit of running a game, hitting home, and launching another one. So I installed a task manager to kill all apps while the screen was off.
Sure it might not be the best idea on a PHONE but it worked VERY well for saving battery life. I think if you excluded the proper apps, you could gain the same results.
This, coupled with SetCPU, did wonders. Night and day difference.
I have advance task killer and I close apps frequently through out the day. For some strange reason there are 30+ apps running when I'm only using 10 of at the most or a little more. How can I keep them from opening after they have been terminated???

One of the cardinal rules of Android is to never use a task killer......
As you have found out, the apps just open again anyway & all that open/closing will absolutely kill your battery life.

Don't use a task killer, especially on Froyo and above.
Task killers are totally counter-productive in Android.
Android does a great job of memory management all by itself, just let it do its thing & don't worry about it.
Never use ATK. Wastes more battery then the apps themselves.
As everyone else has said, using a task killer makes things worse, not better.
What everyone has said about not using task killer plus, exit apps using the back button and not home if you want to close them. That way they will exit rather than stay in memory. Also, if you really want to dump everything out of memory then hold in home>task manager>end all.
And it's moving slowly since the task killer kills the app so the app relanches itself. Killed, relaunch, killed relaunch, killed relanch. Now multiply that by 10 or 20 or 30 apps and it's a wonder your CPUand RAM haven't melted yet.
There's a stock option in 'settings-developer settings' to limit background processes. Also to kill any app you leave right away.

I have an app called Eva which is a voice assistant. I believe ics is sometimes closing the app when its in the background, because the widget for the app is not responsive and has no text sometimes and works fine other times. I don't know of anyway in ics to set an exception in the task management to never close this app or its background process. Any way to get around this without a 3rd party task killer? Or is there any way to see a log of what ics is killing in the background to confirm my suspicion?

I've heard using task killers is bad. Is long-pressing the back key to kill an app just as bad? Its really useful when I want to stop it completely or not have to go back several menus.

With ICS you don't need a task killer,it's inbuilt. But on gingerbread, a task killer is a very wellcome app, and i think long-pressing back to kill doesnt do harm,offcourse that may sometimes depend on wich app it is, but should be harmless.

IMHO as an Android developer killing an app manually isn't bad. It's usually not necessary unless the app is doing something really stupid -- making a lot of network requests or refusing to turn off the GPS are two examples -- but it should be fine. Apps shouldn't get messed up when you force-close them unless they're designed poorly.
Tasks killers, on the other hand, are a Bad Thing because Android does a good job of managing memory on its own. Task killers try to do the same thing but they do it worse, with unpredictable results.
If you want to increase your battery life, check the statistics on your battery monitor app every once in awhile, most phones have one. Just uninstall any apps that seem to be eating up an inappropriate amount of battery.

My goal is to keep an app from closing when using the clear recents function found in many Roms. I know in MIUI if you drag the app down in the recents it will lock the app and prevent it from being closed when clearing all. I would like to find a way to do a similar action using the latest PA 4.4.3 Rom.
Perhaps there is an app that lets me run it at all times or something in the system that I could lock it like I would in MIUI?

Would that keep the app from being killed while using the recents clear built into the Rom or just the task killer? I haven't had on of those in years.

not sure i was thinking that you use the app's clear all button. The recents clear in like android's inbuilt task manager maybe it will get the highest priority maybe it wont. worth a shot
Alternatively(not a geeky way) you open the recents from the app you want to keep and then clear the recent from that.
Does anyone else have a suggestion?
