CM7 R9b - how's your wifi signal? - Samsung Galaxy S (4G Model)

Just wondering for those who are running the newest cm7, how's your wifi signal? Mine seems to be pretty bad, I have 1 bar about 20ft from the router. Upstairs, the phone will drop the wifi completely at times (never noticed it happening on VB). On VB, I would have 3 to 4. I still don't get why wifi is so terrible on this phone lol.

I agree that wifi is a little quirky, but I wouldn't complain.
Last year we had several devs tells that we would never have Gingerbread officially and or CM7 was never possible because of lack of driver source.
I am so happy we have it.
BTW, my wifi is full until about 30 ft. Then it switches between 2 and 3.

I totally agree, not complaining. Just wondering because maybe something is messed up with my install. I did buy this phone used, so it could also be a phone issue. I've never gotten the best signal with wifi. Sometimes my regular TMobile signal isn't great either.

Losing data connection on CM7

I have been keeping up with the updates hopeing each one will fix my problem but not yet. I don't see others with the issue.
I'm running the latest Test4(Test3) using Slayhers stock kernel. Everything works awesome except intermittently I lose connection whether I'm using Wifi or 3G(No 4G in my area). The only way I've found to get it back is reboot.
Is this a widespread issue or just me?
Same issue here. I live in 4G area. Intermintent Data Loss. If i switch to CDMA i get a 3G but CDMA/LTE i get nothing. I had data allday yesterday but none today.
I think the RIL is still being worked out. Bear in mind that this is a Pre Alpha Pre release. Also LTE is something completely new to the world of CM and to American cell phones. I've run CM on 3 different devices and I will tell you that by the time nightlies roll around, it will be near perfect. The CM team won't put their name behind something that is half working, half assed, etc. Be patient.
I had the same problem but now I have a small problem. I have a very fast wifi setup at home but it doesn't like to actually connect to it. Looks like 3G is riding shotgun for a while.

One thing I read about the WIFI is, try turning the WIFI on then reboot with the WIFI on to see if you then connect.
Yeah, I think we'll all be experiencing this until the crew addresses it in a future update. However, it is still a great start. Not a whole lot of major issues, no deal breakers. I'm still using it as my DD.
Definately!!! I love the cm7 build and I'm thankful for all the work. Just wasn't sure if there was an easy fix I had missed.
Thanks all!

Droid Charge GPS?

Howdy all?
I don't know WHAT I was thinking but on impulse bought the LG Revolution last night. It's a decent and I do want to emphasize just decent, however it has an AMAZING GPS capability.
Well I am going to right my wrong and get the Charge, hence how is the GPS on it in comparison? I need a device that locks fast and can get below 20 meters (long story with crap phone at AT&T)!
Any guidance/perspective would be appreciated.

gps is great. Locks quickly. Much better than the fasciante was. I wouldnt regret buying the revo...its a great phone too.
Doesn't the Revo have Bing by default for search engine? I thought about getting the Revo but I hate Bing.

Exactly why I am taking it back. I did not know how deeply intergrated bing was into the phone. I thought it was just to higlight the search engine.
Plus there is not excitement about the phone. Verizon reps weren't excited to talk about it and there is not support on XDA.
On thing -- GPS and call quality were some of the best i have had on a phone.
I made a mistake and thankful I can fix it within my 14 day period.

True. However, I would feel better with a Samsung or HTC model. Something is nagging in my mind that I would regret the LG purchase down the line. Just a feeling.

I think you will maybe regret making the change. There WILL be roms, with debloat. And make the phone what it should be.
GPS on the Charge is okay. Doesn't lock nearly as fast as other Moto devices that I have had.

im very unimpressed by ALL of its wireless network capabilities, the gps can take minutes to lock on its fairly accurate but sometimes i'll go threw 2 songs and pass 4 exits before it locks and i find out im going the wrong way. on top of that i had the HTC TB and it had great 4G signal all around my area but my charge is maybe 1/2 to 3/4 as strong in the same places, also the bluetooth will NOT stay connected to anything which is a HUGE problem at least for me because i have a tablet and the entire reason i bought the charge was for th 4g hotspot to share with my transformer but as of right now that is nothing more than a pipe dream. I'm hoping that some of these issues will be ironed out because i can't take this phone back now and i have to wait for something newer to come out.
sadly i'm slightly disappointed in this phone so far but i do understand that in time problems will be addressed.
as far as another phone to get its hard to suggest ANY of verizons 4G phones as they all kinda suck....
So far, the GPS on my Charge has been awful. I love the phone to death, but every time I try to use the GPS, it just laaaags. Doesn't matter what program I'm using to access the GPS.
Thankfully, there are very few reasons I need GPS and most of those reasons, I really don't need GPS, I just need a location, which I can get with cell tower triangulation or whatever.
...Ok, I just opened my phone, flipped on GPS, opened Google maps and it is working perfectly. Eh... so I guess I'll amend "awful" to "spotty with a chance of awesome."
The GPS in my Charge works. It is not nearly as fast as my Droid X was, and it struggles to get a lock indoors, but I only rely on it for 1 app and can make do.
My DX would have a lock within 2 seconds max, and the Charge will take up to 10 seconds for an initial lock. That being said, I have not experienced any latency/accuracy issues once locked on to 5+ satellites.

GPS has been terrible for me. I have had to use additional testing apps to get it to lock at all on occasion and it has been slow in those instance. Prior to EE4 it was excellent, but since it has been horrible.
My GPS completely blows, just like the Fascinate.
For those with the GPS issues, download GPS Test by Chartcross and fire that up one time. It should get a signal within 15 seconds. After opening that one time, my other GPS apps lock a signal very quickly.
It sounds strange but that solved my GPS issues...

I have taken to using that app as well. For me it means the difference between not being able to lock and being able to lock in a minute or three. Now, I have taken to modifying my gps.conf .. so we'll see how that goes.
My wife's takes literally over five minutes to lock the first use each day or so, but sped up with a the testing app. It seems like Samsung has issues with pull GPS data off the net/cell towers to speed the initial connection. Just a theory.

My GPS has also been very awful since ive gotten my charge last week. It takes forever to lock and mostly it doesn't even lock accurately on my location kinda disappointing coming from a BB that locks on almost instantly on my exact location.
I remember it working real well but then yesterday I went to use Navigation and got nothing. Since then I've tried to clear the DV cache, clear the GPS data, reinstall Maps. Nothing has worked. Through the testing apps, I can see it is getting some gps signal but they are mostly weak and it never locks on to anything. I am thinking about wiping my phone to see if maybe that will do the trick. Might be a good time to start getting into Roms.
I've only used mine twice, but it seems to consistently position me about .25 to .5mi away to the south from my actual location. (Both times I was using it indoors.)

Any way to improve wifi reception?

Is the problem the hardware? Or can the software be tweaked? Just wanna know because as everyone knows it is horrible on this phone.

Helpful....
and really, 30 feet? that's not exactly far.....
Its not the router, it is the phone. Mine, though it will remember the networks I use, will NEVER reconnect to one when its in range. Signal strength is also an issue. All previous phones I've had have been able to get at least 2 bars of wifi signal at the other end of our house, but the Infuse just can't do it. Drops to the very least signal indicator on the display and will not pull any data.
I've had a bit better luck with Infused 1.6, but it may just be in my head as I don't think that it actually changes anything in the software for wifi over the stock ROM.
There are a LOT of posts about this and there doesn't seem to be an answer (at least that I have been able to find) to it or any work-arounds. This is really my only complaint with the phone, the wifi is absolute garbage. Some have said that its because the phone only does b/g and not N, so if you have N and you can set it to B or G that may be better.

Well from 30 feet away you should have full bars.
But at the op, I know what you mean about wifi signal. I learned though that even though it shows low bars, my speed was still good.
On the other hand, for some odd reason the miui rom made my wifi signal better. I went from about 16 mbs down to 23 down. Maybe a coincidence, I dunno.

I think it's mostly a hardware problem. The consensus among those who own the phone seems to be that wifi reception is average to poor.
I don't have the knowledge to be able to speak authoritatively, but I think software *can* have an impact.
With my particular Infuse, I have better reception with the new MIUI rom posted by Mikey than anything else I've tried (almost all of them). I get full reception - "excellent" - in locations where on any other rom I would have "fair" or "poor"...
I don't know if this makes sense but that is my experience.

While Strych is being rude (normal from his other posts) I have to agree that it might just be your situation.
My router is on the ground floor and I can use my wifi from the third floor in my house.
Then again I've used Wifi Analyzer (from the market) to test the channels and see what wans were overlapping mine and select one that was empty with good strength.
I also tend not to flash beta roms and then wonder why things aren't working as expected.
If you want help with your issue, you may want to post in the Q&A forum and describe what you're running, what problem you're having (specifically), and what you've done to test/fix the problem. Otherwise, if you're just ranting, I can understand that as well.
Hmm well a lot of helpful tips. I will be purchasing a brand new router. The one I have is just a basic Linksys. So ill upgrade the next level up. Idk I've never been able to get great reception. But on the flipside Ive always used a basic router.

What were you on before? AT&T Froyo or Rogers Gingerbread?
One of the problems with Rogers Gingerbread were crappy TCP buffer settings - CM7 had the "better" AT&T settings for a long time until it was updated to the new UCKI3/I4 settings. This would explain faster WiFi performance regardless of signal quality.
Signal quality has always been fine for me. Froyo has some annoying power management issues where the wifi chipset basically dies and needs to be disabled/reenabled to reconnect (This is actually common across many devices with the BCM4330 - happens a lot on the Tab 10.1 too, and in that case it's sometimes so bad that it hoses up the lockscreen.), Gingerbread seems to have fixed the wifi-death issues on our devices.

I also have the same exact issue. I went thru 3 diff routers and no change. I also have an inspire and a iphone and they connect perfectly when mine cant. I live in a apartment and my router is in the same room. My wifes inspire works and mine dont. I know one of you are gonna say something like maybe you have too many things connected. Well that would be false. Both inspires had no problems but when i got my infuse it was just still 2 phones connected. Im calling samsung tomorrow to see what they have to say. I had alot of calls about the infuse and wifi problems also

bought 9020a to replace iphone for girlfriend, she hates it cause no reception :(

Ok so my girlfriend was a big iPhone fangirl but after a year of harassing her and her seeing what i can do with mine she decided to give it a try. After a while debating different screen size, shape etc she decided on nexus s in white. Of course, finding a decent nexus s for ATT in white was a pain but I eventually found a pristine one and jumped on it
I had her try out a few different roms, and she complained to no end that her battery sucked, things crashed etc. It was like she was finding reasons not to like it.
Finally got it stable on bugless beast, found a keyboard she like and all seemed well except...
The phone doesn't get service at her job where the iPhone did. As a result I think that's what's killing the battery cause when she isn't there it seems ok. It just keeps searching for signal. About everything else I was able to fix but i guess its pretty reasonable that she expects it to work where her last phone did, and so far i can't do much about it. Admittedly the reception does suck. It's consistently about 2 bars and 10+ DBM lower than my galaxy s2 both on ATT.
Does anyone have a decent remedy for this? She's back to the ifail and I'm going to have to eat my losses trying to sell a phone a paid too much for cause she had to have it immediately
Tthanks in advance
flash a different radio perhaps?
Hmm i remember doing that for my inspire a few times, assuming it's similar where certain ones seem better in certain regions does anyone have recommendations for anything that works well in the NY area or does it not matter? Flash them through hboot on here?
Thanks
The radio will make things much better. I have ATT and I have been using the KB3 radio which seems to work very well.
Not sure about ny, just be careful and flash the correct radio for the 9020a.

Maybe you should exchange the phone.

right, there may be something wrong with the phone itself. what radios have you used? have you tried the hsdpa tweak http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=14587622&postcount=5
Not to get off subject but does that tweak really make a huge difference ?

Wifi turns off when signal is weak (1.85)

While using the phone in a spot with poor wifi reception, I've noticed the wifi icon completely goes away sometimes. It will then pop back on shortly thereafter. Is this normal behavior when it thinks the wifi signal is completely gone?
I just picked one up yesterday and have been having issues. In my bedroom it will read 2 bars, drop to one, then shut off. Comes back on within seconds. This phone seems to have WiFi issues for a lot of users.

Same problem here, but it also happens when it says i have full bars. I need to enable best wifi performance to fix it. My gsii never had this problem...
This is exactly how mine behaves too. I'm in the room with my router so I normally have full bars (and should) but every once in a while the signal goes away and comes right back 2 seconds later. I've tested it with 2 routers, a linksys running dd-wrt and a d-link one, both have the same results.

International One X has issues too. The newest update 1.85 was supposed to fix some WiFi issues along with other bug fixes, and it doesn't seem to have helped us. Let's not assume they even know what the problem is at this point.

I don't think what I am experiencing is a hardware issue at all. Im not even moving the phone when this happens, and my phone passes the squeeze test. I'm confident this means it has to be software related.
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
This is kind of an old/dead thread by now, but I just wanted to share my experience with wifi on the One X.
I'm also having problems, but I'm currently running a nightly (though very stable) build of CM10 on my One X and still have wifi issues. This COULD be hardware related, in that it's just crappy hardware (though it could also be software related if CM10 is built using wifi "code" (not really sure what the correct term for the wifi stuff in the software is ) from the stock software)
I'm sitting at work right now, for example, and every once in a while the wifi will disconnect. When connected it shows 2-3 wifi bars, when it's NOT connected, my wifi network shows up as "not in range" .
same type of thing has happened at my house. I thought my phone was defective so I traded it in for a replacement at best buy. Same issue. Such a shame becuase I really like everything else about this phone and wifi was never an issue on my last HTC device.
kernel changes affect wifi. some of the cm10 builds have known wifi issues.
i would never think of returning a phone because of an experience with a custom rom, since the phone wasn't built to run that rom.
always revert to full stock and see if you still have the issue. also updated ota/ruu are made to fix issues also. at&t rom doesn't have many stock wifi issues, but you can always run into issues with wifi access point incompatibilities.
