I've been using NexusMod on my Skyrocket for a few weeks now, and all of a sudden while walking around in the mall today, my phone said "no sim" while it was low on battery.
I couldnt' do anything about it, but by the time I've gotten home, I've looked up everything about a "No sim" issue, and tried the following:
reflash to Buoyancy 1.3.1 (GB) via restore
flash to different radios, then back to UCLA, then to Rogers, then to Telus, back to Rogers, and every other combination
restore to stock via Odin
after restoring to stock, reflash the original K7 radio (when it didn't work)
more various flashing of roms and modems
Ultimately, nothing has worked. I've tried putting a piece of paper to force better contacts, and obviously switching sim cards which didn't help.
I've noticed some other people had this issue, but it looks like flashing the T-mobile modem worked, but didn't work for me. Any other tips or experiences?
Thanks in advance!
You try giving the carrier a call to reset the signal?
Sent from my I727
Called up Rogers, they asked me if the SIM worked in another phone (which it does because I'm using my SIM in my old HTC to call) and they said it's not an issue on their end. Not to mention they weren't too eager to help fixing a phone I didn't buy from them.
Anyways, it's been brought back to stock now, using the sammobile (also tried the XDA tar) and neither fix the issue so it's probably a hardware problem unless someone can suggest otherwise.
I've tried the Blaze, Tmobile, Telus, Rogers, and various AT&T (UCLAx, UCLDx) modems to no avail against a combination of ROMs.
Oddly though, occasionally on certain radios, I noticed it would show a reception bar, but also say no sim at the same time. It doesn't happen in stock GB, as it only says no sim and then a "x" on the reception bars.
I'm sure it's a one-off issue, but can't say I'm impressed with Sammy right now given I've had the phone for only 4 months and it's never been abused.
It does sound like a hardware issue but for future reference for when you call rogers:
Don't tell them you didn't buy the phone from them.
When you ask them for help, say x isn't working so can you do y. They will say have you tried this, this and that, say yes and get what you want.
This is the only way I have survived rogers since inception (long time customer helps too I guess).
Sent from my I727
This may sound crazy to you but from many years of experience with electronics and in IT I would say that since it sounds like a component failure or loose contact I would say try gently tapping it with the battery out and reboot. If under warranty tap a bit harder
Just my opinion please no comments if you disagree...
Turns out the sim card tray was loose. Samsung wouldn't fix it saying this is not a warranty item and wanted to charge $120 to fix it or $35 just to return it to me.
Luckily, after complaining, rogers graciously footed the bill since the phone is less than a year old, though the Hup period got extended 6 months (but not my contract)
Kudos to rogers but shame on Samsung for not taking care of its customers. Aside from day to day use, the phone was never abused nor was there any external physical damage. Not sure how they reached that conclusion. Sure it might have slipped out a pocket or what not over the few months I used it, but it should be able to withstand abuse from daily use. my old HTC Evo 3d withstood a hell of a lot more damage than that, I dropped it down a flight of concrete stairs that dented the entire side of the phone. it worked perfectly fine until I lost it. I am sure I will get a lot of heat from the Samsung fans here but I can't help but vent my frustrations.
To think I supported Samsung by buying a GS2 for my wife and I...

been searching for 10+ hours and no luck or solution.
i was on gummycharged ep1f/ep1h rom and everything was working fine until today.
i don't know what triggered it, but my phone just restarted and then lost all signal.
after searching and looking at phone info, i found first line under baseband version shows "unknown".
tried flashing to every possible roms out there using odin and it would not bring the phone back to life.
funny thing is i have no problem w/ 4glte service, which allows me to surf and download but no voice service.....
do i have no choice but to go to verizon for replacement phone?
thank you.

yeah I'd take it into them, sounds like some hardware got fried.. however I'd probably try to flash a froyo rom for whatever good it'd do, if they somehow can check baseband and it shows GB your warranty is void and they will not fix or replace it
blazing through on my VZ Droid Charge 4G
found this over in the Galaxy s 9000 forum (wc8 posted it)
Mine now works fine
so what was the cause - still no idea
so what did help - rebooting the phone couple of times without the sim inside
heads up !
worth a try and not my fault if something blows up...

Isnt it sad that we (everyone including devs and XDA as well as casual helpers like me) have to put that final line in there so they dont get blamed/flamed if things get f'd up?

Had the same problem with my Fascinate. After a flash I lost all 3G and phone capabilities. What I did was reset my phone line with the esn of an old phone I had lying around. Go to this thread. It will show you what you need to do.http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1051543. I took mine to Verizon, and also spent hours with tech support and, to no avail. This esn swap did the trick. Good luck.
did the stuff you were flashing include the radios? like this one?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1172182
or this thread?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1111486
yes, all the roms i flashed had full radio from ED1, ED2, EE4, EP1F
none worked....
i'll try to search and see if esn method works that someone mentioned above.
keeping my fingers crossed....
currently, phone is @ stock ee4 unrooted w/ no baseband for cdma radio.
if anyone else is having same problem, do not run esn swap!!!
it will cancel your unlimited data and there is no way to bring it back.
thank god i read it before i tried it....
phone still no go with unknown baseband.....
HELP?!?!? PLEASE?

i called Verizon and had them do it over the phone. In other words, they moved my line to a dummy ESN on their end and some random number to my phone and then switched it right back, all while my phone was off, so when my phone was turned back on it got re provisioned on their network, which fixed my 3G data issues......but i dont think this is the OP's solution. When i had that problem I had phone service, just intermittent or no 3g data is all

You won't lose your unlimited data unless you switch to an ESN that is not a smartphone. I have switched my line a couple times and still have unlimited.

well if you are stock ee4 unrooted I think you are golden. Take your phone to verizon and have them deal with it.

I am not sure abotu this (not saying it is wrong but I never tried) I say take the 20 minutes on the phone with VZW and let them do it...
UPDATE
took it to verizon store twice, got sim cards replaced twice at two different locations.
still no go, rep recommended me to contact replacement center.
talk to tech for and hour trying to figure it out,
the tech announced that my cdma radio is fried.....
so i asked when i'll get the replacement and he said sometime on tuesday.
and i asked if i could use my really old LG non-smart phone for time being and he said i'll loose my unlimited data and moved to 2gb tiered data plan...
so i guess i'll be out of service until tuesday....

Hey I believe ya, I am just in the better safe than sorry frame of mind when it comes to the unlimited data structure. It does make sense though since i did switch from the fascinate to the charge without losing it
they told me this will only work if you went from smart phone to another smart phone.
however, if you went to non smart phone and then smart phone, you'd lose your unlimited plan.
I'm surprised this couldn't be fixed with a software flash. I came from a Samsung Epic and this was a regular occurrence on at least one of the Gingerbread leaks. Happened to me at least once - used ODIN and reflashed the whole shebang (full TAR with modem) and got it back up and running.
i wish there was an easy fix like you said.
then i don't have to wait for them to send me replacement device and also saves me from hassle of reapplying invisible shield. the maximum protection kit is pain in the ass to apply.
i've flashed with every single rom+radio out there in many different order with both odin 1.3/1.7/1.8 and samsung pstlite.
i've also tried flashing radio only and still no luck.
After reading through the big "dropped data" thread, the Q&A section, a few other stories about data dropouts, and finally my own experience having to replace one, I've come to only one possible conclusion - this phone is frying SIM cards. The question remains - is it the hardware doing it, the software doing it, or perhaps Verizon's network doing it? The use of a SIM on Verizon's network is a new thing, and it's clear that they were not ready for their 4G rollout. Remember the overnight network outages last month? VZW is trying and failing to cover their asses. Google the various devices on their network - "Bionic," "Thunderbolt," "Revolution" and the words "Data Dropout."
We've been sold defective goods with no potential fix in sight (people flashing the latest GB leaks have confirmed that data dropouts still occur). Verizon knows how many Droid Charges have been coming back, hell, how many devices in general are coming back. We've been screwed over by Samsung, who it's almost certain will drop this thing like a bad habit after the GB update. We've been screwed over by VZW who are, by now, well aware that there's an issue.
I'm thinking that this could be grounds for a class action lawsuit. (not trolling, and not trying to start a flame war). I seriously think that Verizon needs to get their collective corporate heads out of their collective corporate colons.

I could be wrong but I think its the flashing we all do and switching modems that does it, not necessarily just the phone or network as I have yet to see someone running a stock Charge burn one out

I flashed only once, and it was dropping data long before that. That, and I've been reading other forums (blasphemy, right?) - brand new Charges have problems, too. Example - http://androidforums.com/samsung-droid-charge/414530-new-droid-charge-sim-card-problem.html

So did I. New phones wouldn't be burning out SIM cards if it was the flashing, and I highly doubt flashing one rooted ROM, once, would burn out the card. Also, when I got to the Verizon store to replace it, the dude had said I was at least the 3rd person in there replacing theirs in a Charge.

My sim had to be replaced 2 weeks ago because I lost data for over 24 hours by the time I got to the retail store for them to waste another 90 min troubleshooting before finally just replacing the damn thing. I was stock and only flashed to Humble 5 four days ago. It's the phone. My buddy at work had his sim card go tits up a week before mine, he was also stock at the time.

I've been through 2 sim's myself. I take the sim out when using odin, I really think its the phone.
I haven't burnt a sim card yet. I've odin about 6 times and flashed cwm about 8. I think I have killed my battery. It used to last 12 to 16 hours but now only 8.
I do get data drops. I'm locked in 3g because now 4g in area.
I have yet to damage a SIM. I have two Charges and collectively have flashed about 50 times. About 20 of those were flashes with the SIM in.
So far so good...
I agree
I'm on my third sim card, the first one i thought was because I flashed with it in there. but the second and now the third have just crapped out even though i hadn't flashed anything in days, and i pulled the sim religiously when i was flashing. My data switching would go on the fritz, 4g wouldn't hold, but instead of switching it would just sit there blank. Then you go 3g only and there's nothing, not even a 3g logo. then airplane mode, radio reset, finally like 15 reboots a day to keep a data connection when there usually isn't a problem.
I don't care if its the phone or the sim, i just know it sucks, i emailed verizon and told them if there's nothing they can do about it, they need to roll up my upgrade or prepare to lose a customer. I'll walk away. It worked, they rolled me forward from july 2012 to later this month. Just in time for the Galaxy Nexus. However, the GN is a samsung phone, so i've been on the fence big time about that one. If the radios are not the same model then i'm down, if they are, rezound here i come.

Out of curiosity... how are you with data drops? Are you in a 4g area? I'm starting to think the constant network issues may be what's doing it - the phone having to reauthenticate onto the network like a million times a day, reading the SIM (sending current through it) might be causing the burnouts.
It's pretty clear I'm not the only person experiencing them.
Thats what the person I talked to last night suggested.
I've never damaged a sim either although I did remove the card during all my many Odin sessions.
I have no data problems whatever with my phone. While traveling, I did run into an area where my phone started dropping data a bit but my boss was with me and his Bionic was dropping data in the same areas also.

i posted this on another website's forum yesterday...sorry for those who read it twice, but i got no responses and am desperate.
so my launch day phone had a bit of an accident last weekend the screen cracked. I was able to get another thunderbolt from someone, was originally a refurb (tag under battery says "remanufactured in Philippines" )
any who I've been using the refurb one for about a week now, no major issues. But now today I can't get LTE at all...I've tried reflashing different radios, going back to sense over CM7...nothing. Put the same sim card in another phone right next to it, LTE.
What else can I do? thanks in advance
Have you installed an app recently that is messing up the phone? Have you checked to see if LTE is active on the phone? *#*#4636#*#* and check your phone info. Could always try flashing another radio.
Why does everyone start flashing radios and performing hard resets on their phones when a signal problem shows up? Wouldn't it be wise to contact Verizon first and make sure it isn't their problem? If you haven't changed anything on your phone, there's a 99% chance that verizon is having an off day.
nothing comes to mind that i would of installed that triggered this.
tried different radios.
called verizon to see what they can do. Looks like I can get a replacement phone shipped out. Now to return to stock. thanks.

I'm surprised the VZW rep didn't tell you that it's because the 4G sim cards are paired with your phone. I tried to swap 2 4G phones on my account in the past and I was told that the 4G cards are associated to the phones and they would need to send me out new 4G sim cards. This was a while ago, so I'm not sure if it's still valid, but I would think that they'd have a way to re-link the sim cards on their end.
Good luck with this.
Yeah just another update thread. Who here is still getting the no sim error after installing the update it is now worse for me! I am more of a reader and not a poster im just curious is there a work around for this like for example has anyone installed a rom and the problem went away?
LIttle Rant: I have had nothing but motorola smartphones Droid X, Droid Bionic, Razr Maxx so I got curious since the S3 is one of the top selling phones to check it out and let me tell you love the phone but getting that stupid error all the time is annoying I picked my s3 up thinking I could make a quick sell on my razr maxx but now im stuck switching back and forth between the S3 and the razr maxx Verizon even sent me a replacement did that help? nope now its been 3 days they have a ticket open so who knows any help would be apprectiated and lets hear your story!
I'm still getting it, even worse than before I installed the new modem (radio). It seems to be more prevalent in areas where it's switching from 4g to 3g and back. If I'm in an area that has a strong 3g or 4g signal, it never gives me that problem. Has to be a Verizon thing or something with the SG3 that can't handle the switching between the two modes, just not sure......

UPDATE: I can confirm that if I place myself in a particular position in town where my phone will constantly switch between 3g and 4g and I attempt to send SMS messages my phone inevitably drops all data signal and gives me the no sim and no connectivity message.

I had the same situation just moving from one room to another in my house. Yesterday evening I received a text from my neighbor asking if I had noticed we were receiving a 4g signal in our area (we are in a rural area about 12 miles outside of Tallahassee, FL.). Since yesterday I have a solid 4g in my home area so the no sim problem has disappeared. But there are pockets of weak coverage areas on the way to work in town and at the Florida State University where I work and I continue to find small areas where the problem persists. It has to be the SG3's inability to handle the hand-offs between 3g/4g which produce the no sim problem. My Thunderbolt would handle the switching from 3g/4g much better and not produce the no sim error. I'm sure Samsung could remedy this with a software change (at least not display the no sim) when switching service.
I still have the error on 2 phones. Funny thing is it seems that now it is worse on my wifes phone where it was the other way prior to the update.
From reading this thread and similar threads/topics regarding the sim errors with the GS3, I figured I'd post this here. This is confirmed, my friend and I both have a GS3 bought on the same day at the same VZW store. She keeps getting a sim error while I have never gotten one regardless of coverage or 3G/4G switch frequency, I frequently switch from 4G to 3G when on the subway. She went into the store and requested a new sim card, wound up arguing with the rep, according to him there's no possible way the error could be related, she finally got a new card by calling reps at various levels. After doing a factory reset and reprovisioning the internal SD card with the new sim, she has not yet had a sim error with the newest OTA. So it seems many Verizon sim cards aren't necessarily defective, but are improperly configured with the VZW network. This is just an educated guess based off personal experience, hopefully this is helpful to those with frequent sim errors.

How do you reprovision the internal SD card with the sim? If you are correct, some people may be able to fix the problem by doing so with their existing sim cards.

I would also LOVE to know how to do this!!! Very frustrated with this!! Hopefully reprovisioning the sim finally works!!
After searching around, I found to reprovision, you need to go to stock and dial this in the dialar, *2767*3855#. My question is,
- Is it def not possible to do this from an AOSP rom?
- When they say "go to stock", can I just flash a TW based rom and do it?

Agreed, I have reprovisioned before, to no avail. I thought it might be my SMS client, GO SMS, but I am getting the same NO SIM error with that client that I get with Handcent as well as the stock messaging client.
I called Verizon back today, to note my account that it's still happening, and spoke to them about a replacement phone. (I am already on my second S3 and second SIM) They offered me my choice of Android device, which currently is a bad deal. So I asked them if their deal would hold true once the Note 2 came out, and the nice lady at level 2 support said yes.
So unless this gets fixed prior to the Note 2... a switch is almost inevitable for me.
Dont waste your time doing the reprovision does not work I tried it earlier today.

Interesting...I might be doing the same thing. This issue is beyond frustrating. However, I have not called Verizon about it yet. Mainly because there doesnt seem to be a fix. I dont want a refurb S3 and there currently isnt a valid replacement. Might try the Note 2 if its possible.

vzw put a note on my account and I should be able to just call up and replace my S3 with something new... just have to wait for something good to come out

100% agree with Ripken... call them and have them note it in your account. Basically, I am documenting it once per day (it happens more, but calling more than once per day seems redundant) so they see it, but more importantly, I have some ammunition if I finally move to a new phone. Today's call to 2nd level tech support was a bit frustrating to me, as the nice lady said that, in fact, verizon did get a bad batch of SIM cards. When I pointed out that the bad batch must have been sent all over the country, because it's not a localized issue, and there was a software update addressing it... she didn't have a response. We went thru the same rigamarole with the phone... ie pull the battery, read the number on my SIM, read the numbers from my software build, etc. Again, she offered me any Android phone in exchange, which I turned down. But, at the end, she mentioned she was sending this issue up to a different tier of support that (her words) works with Samsung to fix these issues. I kindly asked her to have them address the headphone jack - bluetooth non-coexisistance, which she giggled at but assured me was working as intended.
So, back to waiting for a fix... or an inevitable new phone.

Guess I had high hopes for that modem does not fix the issues nevermind lol I am hoping when the jellybean update hits with a new modem this will fix the problem the waiting game begins.
Installed the HD modem last night. I have one area at work that I can test it. I'll report back later with my results.
Update: Flashed the HD radio last night (in CWM touch recovery), install went fine. Didn't have an opportunity to check it out till this afternoon when I put myself in a exact known location where I could reproduce the 3g/4g constant hand-off with the "no sim" notification. Sent out 6 text messages and a couple of phone calls with no problem. Either this new radio did the trick for me or it may be coincidental that Verizon has corrected this "dead" area that would produce this problem without fail everyday I was at work. Couldn't tell you for certain. All I know is that it's not happening anymore at this particular location. I used to have the "no sim" "out of area" notifications constantly at my home until just last week when Verizon finally covered this area with a strong 4g service. Only time will tell as I travel thru areas that have weak coverage. It's very obvious that this problem stems from weak coverage areas and the SG3's inability to handle the transfers effectively.
So, I have an S10e (SM-G970U) that was bought from Verizon a while back. The phone was set up on a Verizon post-paid plan, but was later switched to prepaid. The phone worked fine for months, but about a week ago, the phone randomly stopped making and receiving calls, texts, and the ability to use mobile data. It was taken to Verizon, and they tried "all they could" in their words, which included a new SIM card, resetting network settings, and eventually a factory reset from settings. Nothing seemed to work, and they gave up, claiming it "seemed like a bad antenna." They did call their "tech support" who claimed the most recent Android 11 update supposedly caused an issue with mobile network connection with the Verizon S10e devices, which I haven't heard of, but didn't know. He claimed a reset would fix it.
Since none of that fixed it, it was taken to a shop to be inspected. They claim the phone has nothing wrong with it. So, that, in theory, rules hardware issues out. Their only claim was that when an AT&T SIM was inserted, it was able to connect to the network, but never tried to make any calls due to the SIM not being activated. I assume this is due to someone trying to "help" inserting an activated AT&T SIM into the slot when testing, which I assume ended up installing the carrier branded version of the firmware. They gave a couple possible reasons, but neither seemed to make sense.
Since it had the AT&T bloatware and was working with only AT&T SIMs, I decided to flash both the VZW G970U firmware (the earliest version I could to ensure the supposed "issue" from Verizon support wasn't a problem) and the G970U1 firmware. Both firmware flashes have seemed to have done nothing, as the phone is still having the issue. Most times, it will connect to the Verizon network, but the signal seems to rise and fall quickly (like the bars going from 5 to 1 to 3).. Still no calls, texts, or data, though. I have no idea what's going on, at this point, honestly. Any ideas?

If the people it was taken to were competent and did their jobs correctly (one of the best around, according to reviews and carrier recommendation), their diagnostic results show no hardware damage to the phone. Then again, their explanation for the problem was that it had been locked to ATT network (a Verizon bought phone that never had any affiliation with another carrier, aside from Verizon and a month-long stint with Straight Talk). Some idiot she knows that used to work for a Verizon retailer popped his ATT SIM in there, and it flashed ATT firmware.. Their POSSIBLE solution was to try and have it network unlocked from ATT. As we know, though, the IMEI obviously did not change, and the process of confirming the identifier is done on the mobile network level. Therefore, flashing a different carrier's firmware won't do much (permanently), aside from changing the boot screen and bloatware apps. We even tried to explain to the guy that the ATT SIM had never been popped in until after the problem began, as there was no reason to beforehand. I also mentioned I had flashed firmware multiple times before I ever came to him, to no avail. I should've pushed harder, but I had been out all day, frustrated and ready to go home.
It's been over a month since that issue began, and I haven't thought much of it lately.. We've since found her a new phone (and stowed the other one in a drawer). Those guys did blurt some moronic statements.. In hindsight, I'm not too sure I should trust their judgement after hearing what I did. Maybe it was an antenna issue or otherwise hardware, but I sort of assumed if anyone can happen to keep a repair shop open, they'd at least be able to complete the simple tasks fairly easy. I don't know. I'm not paying another repair shop to find out, though.
I had a very similar problem where my phone would just randomly lose all connection for about a minute, then it would reconnect I would start doing whatever I was and it would do it again and this one on for months. I took it to AT&t and they told me to replace the SIM which I did and it didn't work. after a couple updates it fixed itself.
