Smooth Ice 5.1 - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

I've got smooth ice 5.0 working on my skyrocket, but when I tried to
upgrade to 5.1, the phone wouldn't boot.
The instructions here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1633813
say "5.1 IS A UPDATE YOU MUST BE ON 5.0 ,FLSH 5.1 FIX PERMISSIONS AND REBOOT "
Should I wipe cache/data and all of that before flashing 5.1, or just go straight to installing the zip?
Thanks!

U shud just wipe cache and dalvic cache then flash, fix permissions and reboot....will take about 5 mins or so....

Paranoid Android Update

I just flashed the 8/15 version of PA and was wondering if i have to completely wipe everything just to update to 8/18?
It is always recommended to do so to avoid any problems. But you can flash without the wipes and if you run into many issues, wipe and reflash

You should not have to wipe data, just wipe cache and dalvik cache. However it is a better chance of no force closes or other problems if you do wipe everything between upgrades.
following the question above about upgrading, do I also need to reflash the kernel too?
Yes you would have to flash the OC kernel again.

Or, you can just replace the boot.img from the PA zip with the one from OC kenel zip file (i.e. extract all the files on your PC, replace the file, re-zip, and flash as per-norm).

[Q] what happens if i didnt wipe cache and delvik before updating cm10?

so i updated cm10 to a newer version and i didn't wipe anything i just flashed the zip file and everything booted up fine but now im worried that something may go wrong in the future can anyone help??
Boot to recovery and wipe cache and dalvik. Reboot and you should be good.
If you start getting issues, consider reflashing will all the wipes.

AOSP Keyboard has stopped???

Ok, I did a system wipe, cleared the dalvik and cache, rebooted to fastboot flashed the stable cm10 rom, went back into recovery and flashed rom and flashed gapps. cleared cache and dalvik and rebooted. Everything works fine but i keep getting a warning that states "Unfortunately Android(AOSP) keyboard has stopped. Would Gapps have anything to do with this?

What hboot are you on bro? If its the latest, you need to flash the boot img FIRST. Then go and wipe all cache types, system and factory reset. Then flash CM.

I did all that. Sorry didn't provide all of it in details. I guess its becaue of Gapps 4.2. I'm flashing an older version of gapps.
Yep that was the problem. I wiped everything and reflashed rom and older version of Gapps and problem solved.

[Q] After flash purity rom , it takes forever to first boot up?

Already wipe Factory data, successfully flash purity ROM and gaps. After reboot. It stuck on the logo for 20 mins..... .and now still loading....
I already reboot the phone. Re flash the ROM again twice but the same thing happened
It's it normal? ?
Finally it takes over 50 mins but still in the four color circles.... I reboot and restore backup from cwm. (Lucky I backup before flash!!)
I am running on stock rom with franco r16 kernel.

I did not have a issue flashing latest purity clean install. Maybe a bad download/md5...
A bad download can finish installation also ?

did you wipe data/factory reset before flashing? you have to..
First install was a dirty flash but second time already wiped.
Do I need to wipe dalvik cache also ?
Sent from my Nexus 5 using xda app-developers app
Yes if you only did Data...
if you were already on purity than a dirty flash will suffice.
if you were not on purity then you need to perform a full wipe (data, system, dalvik, cache).
EDIT: i had typed full backup above. i obviously meant full wipe.
Thx .
So I need to "wipe data / factory reset" & "wipe dalvik cache " in cwm recovery , then flash new purity rom
Will it erase my files in sd storage ? eg mp3, jpeg movies ?

make a backup. make sure you have a copy of everything you want to save/keep on your computer. full wipe (twrp = data, system, dalvik, cache. cwm = wipe data, wipe cache, wipe dalvik, format /system). flash rom and gapps.
when you're coming from the stock firmware or a different rom, you have to perform a full wipe before flashing.
Use all yours methods. (Wipe issues) And still not able to boot up. Not the issue of gapps. Coz I only flash the purity rom, and reboot, but still stuck in the four color circle for over 15 mins.
Finally I decided to give up and return to stock ROM.

Same Issue.
OMG! I though I was the only one facing this issue.
This has happend to me exactly as mentioned on the first post.
I was using purity Rom from 08/01 build & with every update I never had any problem But recently I decided to erase everything & do a factory Image procedure which obviously erases everything.
So after factory image I wanted to return to purity Rom & got stuck on booting logo for ever.
I followed the steps exactly the same as mentioned in above post.

What to wipe in TWRP

I feel my Nexus 5 is laggy and I would like to try and wipe my caches in TWRP. What partitions should I select out of the 5 available? Dalvik cache and cache only? I don't wanna lose anything.
Then you really only want to wipe the caches anything more and you will have to re flash a rom
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Free mobile app
Yup. What you said. Also go settings/storage and clear cache there too

I had a similar issue and ended up doing the following; android backup 1st, did a wipe to system, data, dalvik and cache, then installed in my case Lollipop by doing fast boot to system and boot img's. Then flashed chainfires su kernel for root. But you can also always flash stock. I also flashed the new L radio. None of this cleared my sd data. Then it let me install all my apps again, the ones I didn't want I x'ed in My Apps, Google Play while they were coming back down. It took about an hour to get to where I liked it. I left my custom recovery alone, wanted to keep TWRP. That cleaned up my N5 pretty well and its rocketing along.
