ICS Stock Messaging App - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

Is there any way to get the stock ICS messaging app? I'm not the largest fan of several little quirks in the SenseUI one, and am really not a fan of how it looks.
Has anyone else tried this? If so, to what success?

no. i even pulled over both the apk and odex file and it wouldn't show up.
i changed my emoticons in the Sense one and that's good enough for me. for now.

That's disappointing. I really can't stand the messaging UI, and the inability to hide the phone numbers in messages. I realize who I'm talking to, HTC... I don't need you to also list out their 10 digit phone number as well.
It's a shame, as I really love the phone, and there's no one big UI change that I dislike, it's just all these little things, like the changes in the messaging app that are really turning me off.

I'm fine with my keyboard (I use Swype), it's the text messaging app that I just can't stand.

He said keyboard, but it's actual ICS sms apps. And after using some HTC has a much better looking app in my opinion.

Yes I meant SMS not keyboards. But the ics keyboard + ics messaging looks nice. I don't mind sense UI though. Beats touch wiz hands down.

I'm using a holo stock messenging apk. don't remember where I got it from as I pulled it from my sgs2. Only problem is it doesnt send mms messages, only sms.
just drop it into system/app named mms.apk with the right permissions.
worked for me. might take a couple tries to show up.

Try this! http://db.tt/suTWB1GG. Its a modded mms.apk from the Gnex with black background / white text. Works perfectly on my HTC One X.

Does anyone by chance have the stock mms.apk holo w/ white background by chance? If it was pulled from the gnex it should work in full with no problems right?
Don't quite like the black, plus I would like picture messages to work as well.
Thank You in advance

I have had gripes with the HTC MMS app, but after using a Galaxy Nexus for a while, it too shows the phone number on the message screen. I also think the HTC UI is actually better and more professional and "clean". But yeah, would be nice to try stock ICS too, but I have never been able to get it working on any ICS device other than the Nexus.

I can confirm that hartfords mms apk looks just like holo w/ black background and picture messages work.
Edit: spoke too soon.... I can receive pics and videos but for some reason can't send them...the search continues.

White on black stock messaging app mod wanted

Just about as simple as it sounds. The evo theme is dark, but the mms app is obnoxiously black on white. It's kinda blinding in dark rooms. Yeah handcent can do that but that's way over kill for a texting app for my use. I'm using the fresh rom, btw. Thanks.
marketplace
Download ChompSms and you can customize all the colors and even make it themed like Iphones sms system. It's a nifty and FREE little app. I donated to remove adds and its been well worth it. Give it a shot. Worst case scenario, you uninstall it.
I too am wanting to have this white on black or white on gray feature WITHOUT going the third party route of using chompsms or handcent. I like the simple features if the stock sense app. waking up early and reading missed texts is blinding lol.
I know you said you don't want another app but this is the messaging app from AOSP and it replaces the default HTC messaging app. Just flash it in recovery.

I would also like to see this I really hate how bright it is. The only problem with aosp messaging is you can't use the HTC messaging widget
AOSP would be the easiest, making the sense app black you would either need to pretty much completely rewrite the xml or you would need to theme all the Sense apps through com.htc.resources. All the HTC apps get there style from com.htc.resources, I was going to make them black in my blue theme but the HTC stuff is way to integrated into android.

Yep. Both of my messaging widgets work. But I'm on a different ROM (Myn's Warm 2.2), so maybe that could have something to do with it?
potentially but i think i may try it

Stock android Dialer and Contacts app?

I just got the sensation today. (I'm coming from nexus one running cyanogenmod). There's really only a few things about sense 3.0 that I like. The camera app, the lockscreen, some of the widgets, and the quick notification widgets (although I like cm7's implimentation MUCH better). Anyways I'm hoping that once the bootloader gets unlocked we'll be able to get cyanogenmod on it, but until then is it possible to get a few stock apps on the sensation?
The only things from sense I'd maybe like to keep in a more "stock rom" would be the camera app and the lockscreen. Everything else I don't really care for. =\
I want the these apps.

* Contacts
* Gallery

I made the same transition as you. At first I hated the dialer and contacts, but they've grown on me.
However that gallery does suck total nuts. You can go in the market and download gallery 3d which is (as far as i can tell) the standard gallery you're used to. I'm using it and it feels right at home.
I absolutely can't wait until we can have CM7.1 on this thing.
Also.. is it just me... or are you totally missing the trackball? I keep trying to adjust the cursor with it when editing text just to get disappointed that it's not there...

No...I hate it. I've accidentally called the wrong person already because it doesn't ask if I want to call. Also it isn't showing contacts pictures when calling? Wtf? It just looks ugly to me compared to the stock android dialer. The contacts app is worse. AOSP contact app is so much simpler looking and just all around better.

I hate the gallery app, it sucks so much. Also i've taken a few pics that auto upload to google+ and it shows the date it was taken as jan 1st 1970. WHatttt?
I've only had it for 8 hours so far, and i've already done that at least a dozen times. I used the trackball just for going back a little to make corrections. Going to take a bit to get use to, but in time I will.
I can't wait for CM7.1 on the sensation. Sense to me is just ugly. I like gingerbread's status bar, and the notification widgets in cyanogenmod so much better than sense...It's ugly. Also I don't see the point of putting the recent apps in the pull down bar....
Good thing for launcherpro plus
I am also hunting for the AOSP style dialer...initially when the MT4G came out and was rooted you could just push the contacts/dialer apk to system/app and change the permissions and it would work. I have had no such luck with the Perma-Temp root on the Sensation...

I'm in the same boat here and can't stand the dialer or gallery. Thanks for the tip on Gallery 3d Picked this phone up because it looks and feels just like a larger faster version of the N1 and I figure it will be rooted sooner or later.

I guess it just comes down to what you're use to. I'm use to the 3d gallery because I've had the n1 since launch. I'm trying out quick pic though. Anything is better than the gallery app on the sensation. Sense really has left me a bit underwhelmed. The only things i'd want to keep from sense is the lockscreen and the camera app.

your right. I had n1 at launch too. I wanted to like the gallery cause it looked cool, but didn't function that well. Plenty times I has to reboot just for a pic I just took to show. I found Quick pic and been using it since
Lol @ that 3D gallery. I hated it on my MT4G and this gallery is cool IMO. Didn't like Touch Wiz on the Vibrant or Sense on the MT4G........flashed a 3.0 rom and loved it. So I bought a Sensation. I'm just curious to know why buy something you already know you don't like? To each their own.

Replacement for stock SMS app

I was curious if anyone had any suggestions for a replacement for the stock messaging app with ICS. I think the stock one looks pretty bad and have tried several of the 3rd party ones with mix results. I am really hoping for a modified version of the stock app but I would gladly accept any recommendations whether it be another 3rd party app I haven't tried, a theme to of these apps, or others or a modded version of the stock.
So far I have tried:
GoSMS
Handcent SMS
Pansi SMS
chompSMS
Contapps
I tend to like minimal style themes that still flow well with the stock look of ICS. The stock messaging app just feels out of place in regards to the look and feel of ICS in general. I been looking around and haven't find anything that I really like so I figured I'd lean on the community for suggestions.
Thanks in advance.
I was looking for something that looked like ICS too, I agree that the stock ICS messaging app doesn't fit in :-\ all I've found that was interesting was an inverted version of the stock ICS one, black background and the emoticons were blue
Pansi sms app is very good thanks

Handcent wins this one. I used to like gosms but they added too much extra stuff I didn't need to it. Handcent is nice. It has a delaysend option so you don't sent the wrong message to someone, or so you can correct a message if you notice it's wrong. Awesome stuff.

I'm with you OP. If there was just a black or grey themed version of the stock app it would be fantastic. Same thing with the Gmail app.

Replace Sense w stock ICS lock screen, no apk needed

Thought I'd share a little trick I found in the HTC Rezound forum... turns out you can easily peel off the Sense-style lock screen and leave your One X with clean-looking stock ICS lock. You simply need to rename /system/app/HtcLockScreen.apk to something else, reboot, and voila, Sense doesn't skin it. I renamed it using adb shell.
It doesn't work perfectly however... I've already found a couple bugs where incoming calls don't show up on the screen (only in the status bar), and if you use something like Google Music that is supposed to add controls to the lock screen, only a black background is shown. I'm sure these functions are supposed to be handled by the Sense Lock UI which is no longer there. Maybe somebody smarter than me can figure out how to fix, or maybe this is just a useless crippled hack.

I doubt it, most of HTC's other apps are complete replacements of stock, whereas the Sense lockscreen is really just a skin sitting on top of ICS.
So it makes sense why incoming calls, texts, etc. using HTC's stock apps don't show up on the ICS lockscreen (they want to be handled by HTC's skin)....but I'm not sure why Google Music won't show controls since it isn't an HTC app. Curious!
Nice tip! Thanks for the info!

Any way to get Emoji on stock ROMs without a 3rd party SMS app?

Well thats your opinion but coming from a long time iOS user they aren't that bad. They're smaller and black and sometimes they're kinda hard to figure out what the emoji is but for the most part its pretty good

Not with the stock Samsung MMS app, but I believe the stock Google MMS app supports emoji, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1728308. Personally, I use the blacked out version from page 7 of the same thread, http://rootzwiki.com/topic/29460-inverted-inverted-g-apps-update-7-5-new-playstore-ver-3713-and-mms-app/. It's a bit quirky but certainly better than the Samsung MMS app.
any update on this? I actually really like the Touchwiz mms app haha but when i'm using something like instagram and someone comments with emojis, i can't see them.
