[Q] Can Mini Apps be edited/changed? - Galaxy Tab 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello All,
Just a quick question... can the mini apps at the bottom be changed to use other apps? I called Sammy tech support and they said I'd have to check w/Google since it's built into the ICS OS. I find this odd because I've checked other tabs at Worst (Best) Buy and they didn't have this mini-app tray.
I want to use other apps in its place. I wonder why when you view the mini apps you'll see an "edit" icon, however, when you click on it, everything is greyed out so you cannot edit or switch-out the mini-apps.
Thanks!

I believe this is a TouchWiz feature, and my understanding is that you cannot use other apps. Only the ones provided by Samsung.

I don't have it in front of me, but I believe that lets you add and remove the existing quick apps. Also, it probably isn't out of the realm of possibility that someone could develop a quick app and it would appear, but I bet there isn't a whole bunch of people building these quick apps.

+1. I think your take on this is as accurate as it can get.

Give Apex launcher a try if you dislike touchwiz. I can't stand touchwiz.

Mini Apps is built into the status bar, not the launcher. it will always be there.

Hate it...i wish i could get rid of the miniapps, sometimes it pressed accidentally and bug my gaming time

If Olny some1 develope mini app for the notes that would be great for ppl who read and like to write quick notes, If Only....

install gmd gesturecontrol to hide the status bar
You wont press any mini apps accidently then. Also when you press edit you double click on a mini app to add/remove it.

You can remove them, they annoyed me so I got rid by following the instructions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1692173
Obviously make a back-up before deleting the suggested files if you feel you may want thm back at some point (not that I did )!

[[Idea]]Notification bar Multi tasking((Picture))

So i have been working on something for awhile it started on paper and Made an example in Photoshop. the Idea is you open the notification bar and you swipe left and right to move through open applications and swipe up to end them Check out attachment.
PS: I am not a programmer so I cant make this happen I just thought of it..
BTW: can you control applications from the notification bar?? if not then this is worthless...
That would be really, really good. And I like your mock-up concept as well.
Sort of like the new Dolphin HD tab browser.
You should suggest this to one of the Launcher devs.
good..because the notification bar is always on top..will be great for multitasking.
That's why I tried to do in TaskOS ( free on the Market.)
I do not use the notification bar, but a long press on the search button ( if your device doesn't have one, in the settings you can choose camera button and will try to add more)
The screenshot should be working in some custom realease of CyanogenMod..

Putting something like this in place of long pressing the home button would be the best way I would think.
I like the idea *!*!
possible? Maybe. I think of the interaction of seepu+ as an interaction example, but I don't even wasn't to think about the memory that would suck up.
Do you plan on having all the apps in memory up there? Cause that's gonnna be alot of swiping to find what you need.
Also you already have the hold down home button. That's accessible even with the notification bar hidden (various browsers, apps hide the not. bar).
I really don't get the desire to have thumbnails on handhelds for what the activity is doing. 1) they will always bee too small to use by glancin 2) you know what your switching to, before you even bring up the recent apps function. 3) There is very little "visual" activities done on a phone that warrant a "preview" in order to choose which you want to pick.
All of you could also try Power Strip and Quick Desk for great multitasking usage with the search and homescreen buttons
ITS a CONCEPT not going to happen by me...
yes, multitaslk view is more important
i like your idea of thumbnail view of each programs running in the background. it allows us to look through all running programs, instead of small icons
If it is possible, it can be shown either using the search or home button
Good concept, but I'd be thinking of using the icon of the software instead of screen preview. Better for privacy...

The system can't differentiate between what programs the user launched and which were launched into memory automatically.

TaskOS
Power Strip
Quick desk

Change Apps in Home Screen Bottom Dock

On my captivate there are four apps on the bottom of all home screens: Phone, Email, Browser, and Apps.
Any way I can change it? It doesnt seem to be accessible/customizable.
I havent found a way yet either....so doesn't seem possible.

Yep, I figured it out. Follow this:
1. From the Home screen select "Applications"
2. Menu> View Type> Customizable Grid
3. Menu> Edit
You can now slide any App down to the bottom dock. You can even change it back to "Alphabetical Grid" and it will still save the Apps on the dock.
thank you sir!

Is anyone having success with Launcher Pro replacing touchwhiz?
I really prefer launcher pro over touchwiz. Are you asking how to change the buttons on the dock in launcher pro? If so, just hold down one of the little +'s until the menu opens up and go from there.
on a related note, is there a way to remove the different pre-loaded AT&T applications from the phone? there are a number that seem useless given other apps out there that do the same thing but better, but i can´t seem to figure out how to delete them.
keep your finger on the icon you want to move a second longer than normal (if you have your phone on vibrate, it will buzz) then you can move them around the screen as many or as much as you like. You can also drag them into a bin which will appear in the bottom of the screen. This action doesn't delete the app or icon, it just reappears in the apps page. Very easy but took me ages to work it out. So simple. Have fun

Is there a stock launcher without the search bar?

I have used the Nova Launcher that has an option to remove the quick search bar and it doesn't leave any unused space like cm9 does! It actually gives me more space for more apps or a 4X1 widget..
I can't believe Google forced this stupid search bar on us even though we already have a search button that eliminates its purpose..
Anyway is there a way to get the STOCK launcher just without the search bar?
Thanks!
The search bar in the newer Nova Launchers is implentented as a widget, so if you deactivate it and delete the search bar you have your unused space free for widgets or shortcuts.

You can disable the search bar on stock launcher
go to manage apps
in ALL apps, find and select Google search
There is an option to disable
However after it is disabled, the space can't be used for placing shortcuts or widgets like what you said. I am still looking for a way to eliminate the restirction.
I don't c what the big deal is with that search bar...I doesn't bother me..even on GB that lil bit of space was unusable anyway...and its not like it looks bad or anything..atleast that's my opinion..
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using XDA Premium App
In CyanogenMods ICS-launcher there is also a option to disable the search-bar. Just google for Trebuchet.apk or extract it from a cm9 rom like me. Im using it with stock ICS, and it works just lika a stock launcher, just with the cm9 preferences
Edit: sorry, probably not what you're looking for..

Well...you do you see a deticated search button on the GN?
Google made it for the GN. Also....,he search button is lovely....it gibes it a nice google Android feel. Why take it out. The home screen is still 4*4 so what's your problem?
Here is how it goes....
If you don't like the search bar you don't like Android.
If you don't like Android you don't like google.
If you don't like google...you don't common sense.
If you don't have common sense...you don't have a brain.
If you don't have a brain you like the iphone....
If you like iPhone you must be mental.
If you are mental..you will kill Obama.
If you kill Obama people will blame china and Russia.
If that happens ww3 will start.
If ww3 starts your we will all die from an atomic bomb....
In short... either love the search bar....or gtfo of androids life.

So... How to disable the search bar. There is a simple solution. Go to settings, app settings, all apps, look for google search. Disable it. Ta damm, your search bar vanished. There is a thing though... If you do this, the capacitive search button also won't work in launcher. But long press (voice recognition, SMS, screen rotation or whatever you set there) will keep working. Of course u can reenable google search again, and everything is restored.

[Q] Is it possible to create folders in the main app menu?

I just figured out I can make folders on my gsll phone in the app menu. (Not the home screens) I can put all the carrier BS and other app icons I don't want to see in there. It brought my app screens to 3 swipes from 5. Is that a standard Android feature or something Samsung added in with touchwiz? I would be interested in doing the same on my tablet.
That sounds like a Samsung Touchwiz feature. As far as I know, stock app drawer does not support folders/dedicated pages.
However, you can simply get a non-stock launcher such as Apex or Nova and they support app drawer folders, plus a multitude of extra features lacking in the stock launcher

How to get 4.2 Nexus 10 Launcher!

All credit goes to Droid-Eye here for this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=40021984&postcount=6 !!:good:
Anyone who was hoping to be able to use the new launcher (such as myself) will be happy to know that you can! It appears that the option is there in the 4.2 OTA update, it is just hidden from the settings menu. I assume that Asus are probably still working on it and will release it in a future update.
The only modification I made to Droid-Eye's method was to simply use a setting shortcut widget rather than an entire launcher option such as ADW.
I used 'Secure Settings' from Google Play, which is free. Please bear in mind you also need an Ipack for an icon for your shortcut. Luckily Secure Settings has a handy link to download free ones from Google Play when you are setting up your shortcut.
I hope it helps anyone desperte to try out the new launcher style. It seems many people hate the new launcher, and I'll admit that I did myself the first time I saw it. However, it has grown on me and I'm going to give it a run to see if I like it over the old style. I can always change back...for the moment anyway.
Note: There is no need to be rooted or unlocked to do this. You can always change back to previous launcher by setting up another shortcut widget in the new style launcher. Your tablet will need to restart to make the change, that is normal.
Screenshots.
As Droid-Eye correctly pointed out, the home soft button doesn't line up with the app draw button. I haven't found any other bugs yet.

Thanks, man. I've been playing around in the activities shortcuts since I first got my brand new (at the time) Moto Droid with 2.0.1(to give you a time frame). I've found all kinds of cool stuff that way and it's nice finding solutions that don't require root once in a while. I highly recommend combing through the system activities if only just to see if there's anything hiding, waiting for a later update. This is how I found Face Unlock before they were ready to give it to us, too (though it took some interesting hoop jumping to get it to actually work). Also how I found the stock android dialer so I could try it wwith different SIP clients (still a work in progress).
Anyway, dig through the activities. Guaranteed you'll find something to play with in there.

Maybe check the tf300 threads (since they're the only other ones with this ability) and see if anyone's found a workaround for it. If it's happening for them too and there isn't a fix, I'm sure GMD will want to know about it so it can be fixed before the rest of the tf700 and tf201 communities run into it. Either way, keep the shortcut handy and you can always toggle back whenever they update the app.

After you have selected to create a widget using secure settings, pick an app, wait, and select settings. Next, you can click the .settings textfield. That will bring up a long list where you have to pick the .settings#launcherSwitchSettingsActivity. (Almost at the end of the list) Save.
Give the shortcut an appropriate name, pick an icon, and save the shortcut.
Just install Nova launcher.
