Does the "hd" button in thebottom left corner in the app not make it 720p? I'm honestly curious. I have no problem playing in "hd" using the app, but there is stuttering using the site. Interesting

It does, and works flawlessly.
Website seems to automatically downscale it to look like crap, but with the app and clicking HD on bottom left it works fine.

Use whatever apk you want from there. Uninstall the preinstalled YT app with Titanium Backup, and install this. *Might need a reboot after uninstalling*
Also, you need root.

Not if the video uploaded a 720p option.

Well I tried uninstalling the updates to flash to no avail. Perhaps it's GPU related? No idea

my youtube app plays HD perfectly. pretty sure it is 720p. I also just enabled force GPU rendering...not sure if this has anything to do with it.

I have heard conflicting issues with video, both in quality and performance. Maybe HD only works over LTE or Wifi?
Search 720p from the app and click the first link, Iceland Volcano or w/e. It shows "HD" next to the views, showing that it was actually recorded in HD.
It first plays at normal grainy quality, but after clicking HD when on LTE it looks amazing...since you can't disable LTE on the ATT OneX I can't test over standard 4G to compare.

even if the video uploaded a 720p option its still 480p. props to ExtractedDeath for providing the link with the modified youtube app. thats the only way. But my concern is why cant it play it in the browser? The phone should be powerful enough

My YouTube app is definitely playing in full HD quality (720p+).

My One X is also playing 720p on the pre-installed YT app. I know the clarity of this video is NOT just 480p...
It's not like past apps that played HQ... it's actually playing HD.

Same here. I think maybe it needs LTE? I took two quick sets of screenshots to compare...if the second pics aren't true HD then its the damn best upscaling from 480p I've ever seen! Leaving full res for obvious reasons, sorry to those with slow internet...

This set shows the difference even better - its a Night and Day difference!:

Plays HD resolutions fine from youtube app. Will not play from youtube.com in chrome.

browser and app work fine for me. Even a 1080p video plays fine.

no my browse cant play 720p either. Opera plays can play it but it is choppy.

your saying 1080p youtube videos work in desktop mode on your browser?? please tell me the secret as i have tried all browsers and none play smoothly on 720p or 1080p. on lte or wifi the app gets 720p. just realized the whole time i was on hspa+ which is why i kept getting 480 .

I'm 100% the YouTube app plays 720p HD video as long as the video has 720p. And it looks freaking amazing.

[Q] HTC Sensation and .3gp 1080p video recording

As above surely as a multi media device and 1080p video recording it would be better to capture video in .mp4 for better allround compatibility.
Does anyone know why HTC use .3gp rather than .mp4 for video recording?

According to the spec on HTC's site, it only records in .3gp
ah ok. the European HTC site has way more info on it than the US one does for the Sensation
That's what the Atrix does too.
I use lgcamera app if I want it recorded in other formats.
Found it kind of odd too.

They don't have the mp4 license.. it's only a container, so quality or anything else is not infected if it's 3gp.

So it's possible to transcode the video you get from .3gp to .mp4? And you need a license to use .mp4? That must suck.

There's no transcoding needed; it's just a different container. A command-line utility like ffmpeg can quickly wrap it into an mp4 container for you if you prefer that. No difference in quality.
Or... simply change the file extention to .mp4 for a faster fix either on phone or in windows/mac.
Easy 8)

Yes, it is strange to use a format with negative connotations like 3GP (I remember old dumbphones recording in 3GP, it's like the video equivalent of AMR...) but as others have said it's only a container so doesn't affect the actual quality which is determined by the codec used, namely H264 MPEG-4.

YAMB may be able to split and rejoin the 3GP container into an MP4, give that a try.
this will convert on the computer right? then i can use any converter, but it makes little sense to first download the video, convert it and then watch it.

STOKED!!!!!
thank you, zokipirlo. this is a great contribution to the android market.
Sounds like Plex, although it does allow you to download.
It doesn't work too good, I got a lot of garbage frames, big boxes of colors and stuff. My PC is fast enough so I don't think it's a problem with the encoding speed.
Also I found a bug, You cant add an entire hard drive letter, on the server it shows like C:/\ and on the app itself it shows C:\\ and when you enter it shows nothing.
I hope this app get better because I miss Air video from my iphone.
Also, could you make MKV embedded subs appear like they appear on the PC? I mean, encoding the subs with the video on the PC (for anime fansub and stuff)
EDIT: this is on a vibrant 2.2
Holy hd batman!!
Works perfectly on my Samsung Galaxy S2, This is great because plex didn't!!
The one and only feature i can suggest for now is 3G support, For when I'm not at home.
Video stops playing (crashes to menu) if I move the slider too fast. Also buffering takes too much time. I have fast wifi and i3 laptop.
Inspire 4g , CM 7 base.

If that's not a problem then it's probably quality related. Can you please tell me which quality profile or bitrate in case of custom profile are you using?
I tried all 3 profiles.
First the default one, appear to be good for 10 seconds but then randomly some frame goes bad and the next 30 frames looks awful too, then it corrects itself for another 10-15 seconds and the same happens.
The dual core preset appear to be the same.
And the low quality preset its a gamble, because sometimes looks better, but still got some bad frames, but sometimes it looks worse than the other 2 presets, almost 95% of bad frames.
Could it be a codec problems? I use CCCP for my video playback needs...

Youtube app for Nexus 5 definitely sucks

I'm trying the Youtube app on my Nexus 5 (version 5.3.32) and it definitely really sucks.
Videos (HD and SD) suffer of frame dropping and sometimes (for example when you listen to a song) there are some punctual audio distorsions (metallic peaks) while playing.
I compared the same music video on a Samsung Galaxy S2 and the difference is embarassing...
Any news/solutions?
As a workaround, i'm using Google Chrome on Nexus 5 for Youtube and it's so much better than the app.....

I replaced the Google YouTube app with an alternative called Viral. I even removed the YouTube apk and only have an issue with the Flowly app. Viral includes features that Google ignores such as background audio playback and full control over the UI theme colors. It actually had floating video windows before Google added that feature.

To all the people who have unlocked their bootloader

Hello, I just wanted to ask the people who have unlocked their bootloader have you lost L1 certification or not and are u able to still stream HDR videos on Netflix ?
Unlocked bootloader only. No other changes or mods.
I did this, still L3 for me
L3 means SD streaming only from service that use DRM, as L1 is required for HD and above (even 720p).
Here's mine, locked bootloader - note L1 and HDCP level:

Doesn't matter. It's unavoidable if you unlock bootloader.
I'm on TMobile and wondering, does every video get locked to SD or just certain services? And if that's the case, is there a list?
Also wondering how TMobiles HD video add on relates, is it completely a waste of money or do you only lose certain advantages of paying for this add on?

Or you can just install modded apps that ignore the L3

No only what uses DRM. YouTube doesn't use DRM so YouTube will still stream in 1080p and 1440p with L3 security. Netflix uses DRM so that will only stream in 480p max with L3 security. So you have to know wherever your streaming from does it use DRM or not.

I should have asked this all a different way probably, what I'm trying to find out is what uses DRM? I assumed Netflix and MLB At Bat but didn't know for sure what else.

That I don't know since I don't care for on a screen this size, only 360 or 240 isn't really watchable. 480p is watchable in most cases. Not ideal and not great but watchable. I'm not watching movies and shows on a 7 inch screen. I'd like to be able to see when I'm 60.
You can probably just do a Google search to find out what streaming sites or apps uses DRM

I don't ever watch TV or movies, just a a few services such as ESPN+ and DAZN, couple others, for when I'm not able to watch something at home. I'll keep trying to Google my way, thank you

I couldn't find an exhaustive/definitive list but combining Wikipedia and a few other searches shows the following services: HBO, Hulu, Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Spotify. It may be fair to assume Google Play Movies & TV does too, given Widevine is Google's.
Netflix is known to require L1, but I don't know whether any of the others do.

ESPN videos on my phone are always crisp. Sometimes it starts off not so good but about 2 or 3 seconds in it becomes a high res video and I'm rooted with L3
