Bit the bullet and its real cloudy in here... - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

So I saw that progress is being made with root being available so I went ahead and bought the at&t htc one, its nice and lighter than my inspire. So maybe not having an sd card slot isnt going to be that bad with all the cloud storage available so I'd like to know from you guys using it which are the better cloud apps I should use where transferring media/docs is secure and fast. I'm pretty sure with this nice camera I'd like to take pics/video and not worry about space. I'm not so sure I'm interested in the dropbox offer for this phone where its only good for 2 years? I know I have 50GB on box.com but I think there are file transfer size limitations? Honestly never used it as I prefer my old trusty sd card.
Also, whats the best root method for this device?

You've got five gigs in google drive , I use box and dropbox no file limits on db, as for box I believe it's 100 mb limits with uploads, I've uploaded a few nandroids from gnex to bix with no prob
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium

lol there is only 1 method to root .
and i use dropbox, configured so that it automatically uploads my pictures from my phone when on wifi

Box is useless for me since there's no sync agent on the desktop. I have 25gb on Skydrive but there's no sync on Android.
It comes down to gDrive an Dropbox. I currently use mostly Dropbox.

I swore I saw 2 methods in this dev section. One being the 1 click and the other being the perma root. Unless their considered the same?

Download the app etc. Then you do 7 easy steps well 6 for 25 gb

when you install dropbox you automatically get 25 gb bonus.*
there is a method to get a ton of free space via referals (i got up to 20 gb with this) going to have to google it because i dont think i can post on here*
*cough involves linux and virtual pc cough*
the 1 click is perma root

If you're like most, what you'll be moving around is likely to be music, pics, video, and files. One storage solution might not be the best for everything. Here's what I'm doing.
General - I have a home server and everything I have is on there. I stream video I've ripped off of it using Plex and/or PlayOn rather than screwing around with moving GB size files. If I'm traveling I'll download some stuff to watch when offline. Astro has a network module that allows me to move stuff at home and my server's a WHS and there's an app that gives me remote access if I want to d/l stuff on the road. A NAS or home server can be great when you have lots of content you view or share across your home network and remote devices.
Music - I use Amazon MP3 to store all my audio (I have it set to sync with my home server). The player shows what's local and remote via a single interface. It's not the prettiest app in the world but it's reliable and works well. I tried Google Music but didn't like the way it took over my phone.
Pics/Video - The Flickr integration built in to the phone's pretty cool. I moved from Photobucket because of it. I have it set in Sense to automatically upload the pics and videos I take. I use the mobile Flickr site to download and view stuff because adding the dedicated app confused the phone because of its native integration.
Docs and Files - I use Sense for SkyDrive because it's MS Office friendly when I want to share stuff with others. I'll use my home server if it's something I'll just be using myself. MS had a 25GB offer going for people already registered but I don't know if it's still in affect.
Just some real world stuff in case it helps anyone. There are dozens of ways to accomplish the same thing.

I use Google drive for music and drop box for other files. I downloaded an app to sync my music folder with Google drive when a change occurs in the folder. And other media and files to drop box using the same app.
I would however prefer to point the library in my player to Google drive directly or another cloud storage to avoid local copies.

It should be in accounts and sync greyed out or available to add. I have an international version so if AT&T chose to omit it as an "enhancement" let me know and I'll post the APK.

i have the att version and i don't find it in add account. can you provide the apk? thanks in advance

I use dropbox for photos, google music for music and this app called Folder Sync for general stuff.

Dropbox is good, but I have 25 gb on skydive and its amazing how you can use office 2010 on the desktop to edit your skydive files. Don't need to buy office ever again. Can't wait till they have a skydive app that can edit files.
Any news on skydive app for sense?

as far as file size limitations go... I've put files larger than 1GB on Google Drive. The one downside to Google Drive android app is I can't figure out how to copy files from Google Drive to my SDcard storage.

Here are the two SkyDrive APK's I found on the phone. Hope it works for you guys. If it does, you should see SkyDrive for HTC Sense appear in the accounts and sync.

Wifi Sync

Hello, I am looking for an android app that when i connect to my home wifi it looks for a folder on my computer and syncs whatever is in it onto a folder in my SD card. Any good recommendations?
Its not 100% exactly what you described, but have you tried Dropbox? Syncs a folder on your computer with the service, and you can sync that with the dropbox app on your phone.

You're basically describing Dropbox. As long as you have a data connection you can access anything in the folder and view/download straight to your phone. I keep all my root stuff in Dropbox so I don't need to keep it on sd card. That way anything I need, I downoad, use, and delete. Plus, it allows me to search and download roms while at work and then when I get home they automatically update to my home computer for flashing.
Click the referral link in my sig and we both get an extra 500mb of space (I have an edu email address). You have to install the desktop application to get your referral credit though.
EDIT - REFERRAL LINK
Hey thank you for the replys so far. I do have drop box and I do love it! But I am looking for that one extra step at the end. What I don't like about drop box is I have to then manually download the files from it to my phone. Basically want once I connect to my home wifi it reaches out to my pc and syncs with a folder on it to a folder on my sd automatically. I don't mind if I have to setup a share or file server on my pc.

I have kinda found what i was looking for in Android Manager Wifi. here is a link:
http://www.appbrain.com/app/android-manager-wifi/com.mobileaction.AmAgent
It has many options, one being able to select a folder on ur computer and one on your SD card for them to sync up automatically. Testing out to see how REALLY automated the whole process is. But none the less this is a great app for many things it seems. People should definitely check it out!
Didn't Double Twist just implement that? Need the "pay" version ($.99), but it has something called Air Synch. Look into this and let me know if it is what you want.

I've read similar critiques of Double Twist. I prefer Syncables through and through - and it think that's more of what you're looking for. Syncables will sync any type of folder, media file, spreadsheet, email, and even browser bookmark. It also syncs between Macs and PCs and smartphones like Droid and BlackBerries.
It has a wider suite of sync/backup/share products than the more niche Double Twist product...oh, and it has wireless sync capability using WiFi, as well.
I am actually writing an app that does exactly what you want. It's not done but the functionality is there to sync a folder (with no PC client needed). If you want to help me test it you can PM me with an email address to send you the APK.
Yea i will check it out. Sent you a PM
Just a random idea but is there an app that works with dropbox and automatically downloads changes to it to your SD card? Seems like that would also be sweet for alot of people.

Alternatives to flickr

Can anyone recommend any alternative sites WITH decent android one touch uploading apps?
I am looking for alternatives because I don't want to sign up for ANOTHER email address, which you have to have yahoo for flickr...
You guys were plenty helpful in tracking down some very good photo apps, so how about the next stage?
Any ideas? What do you use?
Picasa? There's a few apps that can upload to the google picasa besides the stock gallery. And pretty decent space for free. You can pay for additional space if needed.
google plus uploads all your pics automatically, and there's NO storage limit. Doesn't get much better than that...
Box.com offers a free file hosting service, and when you login from your Android phone until 3/23, you get 50GB lifetime storage for free. It's pretty much like DropBox, but there's no time limit on the storage. I just signed up. It's pretty sweet.

I went with box in the end and I am happy with it, I tried a few others first, and as nice as some of them are like picassa, they just don't work as simply as I wanted, and or didn't work.
Box still ahs issues, like I can only upload one file at a time via box app, but I can upload one or as many, tested with 130 files, as I seem to want, and it accepts more than just pics, so handy for backing up my favourite films too.
Thanks for the great link. THANKED

Free Dropbox 25GB with T-Mobile purchase?

I bought the phone but forgot to ask where, how to get my free 25GB on Dropbox. I've installed DB on the phone but it only shows 2.5GB storage... which is how much any schmoe gets.
Anyone know how to activate that?
You log into your dropbox account when setting up the phone or under accounts in the settings menu.
I'm already logged in. It only shows 2.5GB of storage.
After I bought the phone from T-Mobile I used it to create and sign into a new Dropbox account. That account only shows 2.5 GB. So is there something I'm missing? Maybe they've retracted that offer?
They lied I didn't get no extra 25GBs.

what worked for me
I had to turn camera uploads on for this to work. I already had dropbox installed on my PC so when I turned on camera uploads, I snapped a few photos (rapid fire 5 photos in 2 secs . When they all completed the upload to dropbox on my pc I got a message claiming my guruness and I had the extra space.
Hope that helps....
As i understand it, they way you get the extra 25GB storage is by completing 5 of the 7 or so steps in using drop box.
IE. installing drop box on a machine you use, installing on a second machine, uploading from phone, sharing files with friends etc.
Once you complete all steps you will get the email about upgraded account "supercharged" status.
The HTC bonus does not have anything to do with camera uploads, etc. etc.
It's dependent on two things:
- Linking your eligible device to your Dropbox account.
- Completing 5 out of 7 of the Dropbox Getting Started Tasks.
You should get your space as soon as you have these two things completed.
Dropbox Help Center Article:
www[dot]dropbox[dot]com/help/249 (I'm not able to post url's yet)
Three things to consider if you didn't get your space:
- did you complete the Dropbox getting Started Tasks? (it can take some time to show up after completing this)
- did you link your HTC phone to another account previously? (the bonus will only be given to the first account the device is linked to)
- did you use the modified .APK previous to getting your actual HTC One phone? (Dropbox has said there will be a delay granting those users space)
An official DropBox representative wrote on a help forum about this.
You need to complete the getting started stuff again. Some say it triggered on inviting someone to Dropbox. For me it triggered when I installed Dropbox on my new laptop.
Just go through step by step the getting started stuff, and invite a random person if necessary.
This is a bit off-topic but worth noting.. I had 15GB free before I got the 25GB. Now i have like 35GB or so. (it's a bit off because they only give you 23 or something really as you saw in that person's post)
It's worth it to refer people you know. I used the form to e-mail all my contacts, and even a year later got some people who finally got around to signing up LOL. Through all that I was able to get 15GB.
Mine says I have earned 23GB but that I "can now store up to 5.38 GB of stuff in your Dropbox"... weird, and irritating.
Sorry the attachment is a PDF, but it's a screen of what I'm talking about if you want to see.

I agree. I've had a free 50gb from Box for a couple of years, but the lack of Sync makes it far less useful. Any use of that space is accomplished manually, which partially defeats the purpose.
Unless I'm missing something - is there a way to get Box files and folders to automatically update, upload, etc.?

I don't think so. You can of course save from a lot of apps on your 700 or other Android to the cloud, and access your files (provided you have some kind of data connection), but automagically... not with the app itself. I saw that an app I have been using for a loooong time with my own FTP server actually supports syncing... <blush>: FolderSync. Will give it a try.
Trial version ("only allows two accounts and has no sync filters or Tasker support" -- enough for testing Box ):
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=dk.tacit.android.foldersync.lite
Full version:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=dk.tacit.android.foldersync.full
EDIT: confirmed working! I really recommend FolderSync for its versatility and all the options it throws at you. Nice to see it actually works.
It works!! Thank you! I also noticed that Polaris Office can save/edit files on Box no problem.
This is a great offer, no strings from what I've been reading in their TOS and 3rd party reports. Seems they just started the offer and who knows how long they will. They do limit the file size per file though. So to move big files, then you have to pay.
One thing to keep in mind about this deal though, they offer zero warranty and zero guarantees of your data being secure. See item#14 of the TOS. But I guess you can't ask for much when it's free .

Thanks for the link - no, I wasn't aware of this, and it does look promising.
It looks like this would work for my phone, but I'll have to see if there's a Windows desktop equivalent. That's where it would be the most useful. I'm currently using IDrive to backup various files and folders on my desktop, in real time. I was able to get 15gb of free storage there, and it does do full sync, but I'd love to be able to do this with my 50gb of free Box storage. As I said, the main limitation with free Box is that it does not provide a sync function. If there's a way to enable this with a 3rd party application, that would be ideal.

Exactly - that's what I was referring to. Box definitely does do real-time sync, but you need one of their paid accounts for this.
I have mixed feelings about paying for cloud-based storage, and have taken a serious look at CrashPlan, SOS Online Backup, etc., to do a full backup of perhaps 300gb+ of photos and files. But I haven't convinced myself this is either practical, reliable, or necessary. I currently have a backup strategy with 2 duplicate internal hard drives, updated nightly, along with a similarly cloned external HD backed up weekly, and then stored off-site.

Unable to transfer music to Nexus 5

So I've googled till my face went blue and for 2 days I have yet to find a free, reliable way to transfer music from my Macbook Air to my Nexus 5.
Google Music: Not supported in my location. I used a VPN to access the page, but even Standard Access asks for $0 purchase from a US credit card to activate the account (it greys out my foreign-issued VISA as "unsupported payment method", even though the card works for everything else on Play Store). If things get really desperate I guess I'll try using a virtual credit card (which requires a small payment), but I want to hold that off for now, since I'm worried Google might have other location-banning tricks up their sleeve, and registering with a fake shipping address might come back and bite me later.
DoubleTwist: Cable sync doesn't work, and I don't want to pay for a wireless solution which will be undoubtedly slow.
Winamp: This ugly piece of crap instantaneously crashes whenever I click the sync button.
AFT: Tired of looking for a sync solution, I gave up and figured I'd just drag and drop. Hits me with "Could not create folder try reconnecting or restarting your device.", which doesn't work either. I read online that changing USB connection mode to PTP instead of MTP solves the issue, but that didn't work either.
Right now, I'm considering FTP'ing into my phone.
I'd really appreciate alternate solutions or recommendations for free FTP apps, preferably with sync feature.
Thank you
Macs are notoriously bad with mtp unfortunately.
Ftp cafe is a good free FTP client for android. Works like any pc client such as filezilla. Can't help with making your mac an ftp server though
Foldersync can also sync via ftp....

I haven't tried ADB, I"ll give that a shot. My music collection is ~8GB, I tried using Google Drive but that was taking forever.

I'll presume you're kidding. Older androids with USB mass storage mode used to work straightforward, MTP is buggy on Mac and PTP only works for photos.

I tried, but there's a 5mb file limit.

Why not use something like an otg usb drive or card reader?
Unless you're trying to pull from iTunes. Does Media Monkey have a Mac version? I've found it to work well in the past (now I just manage all music manually).

OTG sounds good but I see no need to buy an additional storage device when I have enough storage, I'll remember that for later should I run out. Nope, Media Monkey is Windows-only.

Oh, I just downloaded it, didn't know about the WLAN feature, thanks
So finally what worked easiest for me was ES file explorer, with FileZilla client, 8 GB of songs moved in about 20 mins is great for me, considering the fact that it's wireless.
I guess I'll live without playlists and syncing, thanks for the help guys
Easily I have no problem to send it in my N5

Glad it worked out and nice network speeds there. ES file explorer really is a must download for everyone rooted or not. :good:
I could imagine setting up a folder sync with it using Tasker however this I have not tried.
I'm using iSyncr for Mac (paid app) for wireless syncing.
Another alternative I use is AirDroid, which also supports wireless syncing.
