Stuck on boot screen/HTC logo - HTC Desire S

As the title says. I received an HTC Desire S, which is stuck on the htc screen, from my friend. It won't boot and it seems like a brick.
I can although enter the bootloader with power button + volume down.
These are the following information:
SAGA PVT SHIP S-ON RL
HBOOT -0.98.0002
RADIO - 3805.06.02.03_M
eMMC - boot

I tried flashing a RUU, but that didn't work. I think the major problem is with the S being ON. Is there any way I can boot this device at all? It's kinda of a shame since it's basically in a good as new condition...
Thanks for all the help in advance!

What happened when you tried ruu? Error?
Device should still be covered by original warranty

The installation gets stuck at "Rebooting into bootloader".
I don't know about the warranty, but I'll tell him to return it if all else fails.

Are you sure that the necessary drivers are installed on the PC?
does the ruu give any errors? Or is that what you said above
If you enter the boot loader can you perform a full data reset? Any errors?
Swyped from my DesireS

Boot into bootloader, switch to fastboot mode (select FASTBOOT with volume keys and press Power), connect USB, see that you have correct drivers and the phone is recognized, run the RUU. It'll work.

Hi SlashSpeed,
propably you got the same problem like me. No solution for me so far:

What error returns on flashing the RUU?

Hi
Try S-OFFing your phone from revolutionary.io and flash one of the pre-rooted roms

This is not possible without adb or recovery?!

So here's my findings so far.
I tried running RUU from fastboot mode. No errors, installation gets stuck at "Rebooting into bootloader". I waited for over 2 hours and nothing happened. My PC recognizes the bootloader as "Android Bootloader interface" and fastboot as "My htc" in device manager.
I also tried running PG88IMG.zip with no luck. It gets stuck at [2] BOOTLOADER - Updating and nothing happens, even after hours.
The only think I have left for now, is the goldcard method it seems. I'll try it with my HTC G1 and report back.
Edit: Actually, I have no idea how to perform the goldcard method...some help would be much appreciated.

As he hasn't unlocked the device he should still be covered over the original warranty

Actually, I asked him about that a couple of days ago and apparently, the device is not in warranty anymore. So unless I can fix it somehow, it's dead for good..

You need to unlock the device and S-off it before flashing a Custom Rom.
First follow this thread:
[GUIDE] How to S-OFF your 1.47.x ROM with Revolutionary
Then follow this thread:
[Info] After Revolutionary: install Clockworkmod, root & more
Or install 4ext and install 4Ext Recovery with the install button.
After your done, flash your desired rom. I would recommend Endymion Rom
If you want a stock rom let me know.
Hope this helped you, if not report back.

Did you install a custom recovery and can you still get into it? if yes then try wiping cache and dalvik cache and then restarting...
also answer post above did you separately run the
Code:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
command?

I read through the first link you sent me and I need to have the device turned on with USB Debug on. I can't do that, since it's stuck on the HTC screen. I can only access the bootloader and fastboot.

Wait, do I need to do those steps that are quoted or just with the windows batch script?
I have to do the quoted steps a-g with my HTC Dream, so I presume I'll have to use that device for the adb as well?
Sorry for this sort of questions, I have never done these things before.

tried to install CM9; stuck at boot animation

Hi -- I tried to install CM9 on my Sensation, which seemed to work correctly, but the phone won't get past the boot animation. I thought the problem might have been that I needed to update the firmware to 3.33, which I did following instructions here, but I can't get this to work: the bootloader loads and parses PG58IMG.zip from my SD card, but then doesn't do anything. (No error message either -- just nothing happens.)
I'm running HBOOT 1.27 and ClockworkMod Recovery v5.8.0.9. I'm S-ON and haven't installed SuperCID -- my understanding is that neither of those should be an issue here. I've also repeatedly tried wiping the phone.
Can anyone help?
Thanks!

Firmware update requires S-OFF.
Also if I remember correctly non-Sense ROMs cannot be used if the phone is unlocked through HTCDEV? Not sure about this though.

[Q] Another HTC Sensation XE bootloop thread, PLEASE help!! :/

Hi everyone,
About 2 days ago my phone crashed while I was using it and since then it won't boot up properly, all I see is the HTC logo followed by a black screen and back to the HTC logo, I think it's called a bootloop?
I can access the bootloader menu I think it's called (hold vol down + power button), I've tried recovery and factory reset, neither work, I went to the HTC dev website to unlock my bootloader menu and those options still do nothing
I'd like to add I've NEVER rooted my phone or added any custom firmware or anything like that, so I've no clue why my phone has done this, I've seen several similarly related threads but they've usually done something wrong while rooting their phone, nevertheless I've tried so many different things but nothing seems to work, I've tried to S-OFF using juopunutbear, I've tried flashing boot with various "boot.img", I've tried flashing recovery with "4EXTrecovery..." I've tried to flash with RUU, NOTHING works, I'm at the end of my tether and have pretty much given up, I've spent so many hours trying so many things :crying:
This is what it says on my bootloader screen...

Hi! So what recovery do you have at the moment? You should be able to flash 4ext recovery. When you do that, you will be able to flash a rom. Here is the thread you should follow! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1631861 Do everything exactly! as it is written there and you should be ok to go.
edit: If you would like to install a completely stock rom, you will find this thread useful: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1672425 (If you want to install RUU, you must relock your bootloader! You find all the info how to do it in the thread!) Good luck! Your phone will be OK!

Hi matekaneve, thank you for your response
I've come across that thread before, it doesn't work for me unfortunately :/
Despite the 4EXT recovery image successfully writing to my phone, each time I select recovery on the menu, my phone goes into bootloop again and the recovery menu doesn't load so I can't go any further than step 3 on the thread you posted
Has anyone run into this before?
That's weird... Have you tried re-download and reinstall the 4ext? Or have you tried another recovery like CWM for instance?
What about installing the RUU? Relock your your bootloader and install the right ruu?

I relocked my bootloader menu, downloaded the correct RUU, ran the programme, it finished successfully, took around 20 minutes in total, it said my ROM has been updated and my phone was ready for use but it's STILL stuck in bootloop! This is so frustrating

with all in one tool kit you won't bring S-OFF
from this thread try to flash this recovery.it is better than cwm
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1631861 (only step 2)
I used HTC One X toolkit, but it wouldn't S-Off as I had hboot 1.29.0000, therefore couldn't use revolutionary method. In this instance you can s-off using a paperclip, some insulating tape, and running the ControlBear software. To find out how to do this, type the following into YouTube:
JuopunutBear S-Off HTC Sensation.
... That will show you how to achieve S-Off which will unprotected the nand storage to write enabled so you can flash a new ROM.
See JuopunutBear website for instructions. You can find it by typing:
unlimited.io
... Into google.
or you can use the guide from our forum in dev section

Just reflash your unlock code from HTC dev install twrp then flash away
Sent from my HTC One X using Tapatalk 2
Don't panic, this should be an easy fix.
Once you relock, you have to run a ruu or unlock again. But you're trying to run a ruu for older firmware, which is why it's failing.
Just push the unlock token again, and you should be able to boot to recovery. If not, push the recovery image again. I don't recommend CWM, even though it's been ported to this phone. That version of TWRP should work, just confirm that you've got the Evita version.

I believe through adv but is way simpler to do it through recovery. Try a earlier version of twrp

did you verify you are unlocked now, or did you just assume since you pushed the token again?
Also, are you certain you're using the right version of TWRP and not one for another phone (like the endeavour/Tegra One X)?
I pushed the same token and rebooted the device at the top its now says unlocked

ok i loaded that last night before i went to bed I went this morning to look at the phone and now it just goes to a black screen no madder what I do i put it in the computer the computer goes beep now when its plugged in my computer only the red light at the top flashes and then it disconnects from my computer because i can here the beep of adding and removing hard ware.
is my phone now bricked ?

If I were you I'd reinstall drivers and manually push the recovery via adb. Use this command- fastboot flash recovery (filename).img

Hi Guys,
I have the same phone as the specs mentioned below. This is my first android phone and my first time playing around with it.
Here are the specs for "Rogers HTC One X":
***TAMPERED***
***Relocked***
EVITA PVT SHIP S-ON RL
HBOOT-2.14.0000
RADIO-0.23a.32.02.29
OpenDSP-v31.1.0.45.28.15
eMMC-boot
Nov 26 2013
Here is my accomplishments so far:
- Unlocked with HTC Dec, therefore it says unlocked as mentioned above
- Installed TWRP v2.5.0.0, and can successfully boot into recovery
Yet to be done and do not know how to:
- S-OFF
- Super CID
- Permanent Root
Problems installing ROM:
- unable to install. Various errors with different roms, such as:
1) unable to mount sdcard
2) assert failed: getprop("ro.product.device")
3) error executing updater binary in zip
Please advise. Thank you for your time.
Note: the device is locked to Rogers. It is currently in bootloop. I do not know what I did but before installing TWRP, the device went in bootloop after unlocking bootloader and it would simply not start. Although, as mentioned I can successfully boot into the recovery and mount the sdcard from there to transfer files to the phone.

Why are you relocked?
Unlock again and update TWRP, then try to flash a ROM again. What ROM(s) are you trying to flash.
Be aware that since you are s-off, you will need to extract boot.img from the ROM you are trying to flash, and manually flash with fastboot. You will need to do this every time you flash a ROM, unless you get s-off.
Also, I don't know why you posted to this old thread. Aside from the OP also having the Rogers version, it has nothing to do with your issue. Should have started your own thread.
I'll just clarify that when Redpoint said you need to update TWRP you should update it to TWRP 2.6, your current version (2.5) is very buggy. Also, he means since you are s-on you need to flash the boot.img, when you get s-off this will no longer be required.

[Q] Phone stuck in a boot loop, plus other problems

My phone, HTC Sensation XE, is S-ON, on default ROM, and has HBOOT 1.29.000. Needless to say, my phone is not rooted.
The phone is on a boot loop ever since I last took off the battery and placed it back. I sometimes get a message that my Android system is getting upgraded, terminating with an error "System UI has stopped working" before the phone restarts itself again.
I don't know if this is a hardware issue or software.
How do I get my phone to a normal state? I don't mind rooting the phone if I need to for the purpose of installing default/custom ROM. But I don't know if this would be possible because I only have access to boot screen at present.
Please suggest me suitable solutions. Thank you

if you are completely stock then i think you only option is to use a ruu.exe
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1672425
find the one which corresponds with your region and cid

Thanks rzr86
I looked into the thread you suggested. For my region and CID, I was not able to get the RUU from the thread. What I could get was this - an OTA zip file that matches my software version exactly (3.33.720.106) from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1764025
How do I proceed further with this zip file, since I don't have an executable RUU file?
I am hoping you can be of help -)
(The zip file contains -- META-INF, patch, system, firmware.zip, fotaBoot, version.txt)

When I try and do SOFF using KGS utility, it restarts my phone because my phone is not HTC dev unlocked. (My phone's motherboard was replaced some time ago, and so I cannot unlock my phone.)
ganeshp's one click root requires SOFF. I can't SOFF using his technique because temp_root.bat doesn't work in bootloader screen.
I am in trouble, and don't look like getting out of it

@ganeshp's one click root doesn't require htc dev unlock (meaning no prequisite permanent root; the guide has steps for temproot).
You just need one boot.
Do this: get the boot.img of your current (stock rom) and type fastboot boot boot.img.

I know its a long shot, but you should try doing a factory-reset from the bootloader, just in case it works.
Otherwise run an RUU from the bootloader.
firstly Itsakash he can't S-OFF because the device must be booted to the OS
secondly Far_SighT the command is fastboot flash boot boot.img
thirdly as raz0rf1sh suggested factory reset is a good idea and
fourthly jiteshgawali can you post your bootloader details?
It really is great to see your input guys.
@Far_SighT: I have tried doing the temp_root method, but it doesn't work for me. I could successfully run temp_root.bat just once (luckily, even in boot loop), but next when I tried doing the Juopunutbear SOFF it missed detecting my phone (again, because of the bootloop)
I don''t know where I can get a boot.img file from; for what it's worth, I could only get an OTA zip file for my region/CID from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1764025
@raz0rf1sh: I have done factory reset several times from bootloader, doesn't help friend. I don't have an RUU for my region/CID, all I have is an OTA zip file for my phone from the link I have specified right above this. Can't seem to get an RUU for firmware base 3.33, and CID HTC__038.
@rzr86: Posting all the details I am aware of currently:
PYRAMID PVT SHIP S-ON RL
HBOOT - 1.29.0000

For stock rom go http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1923629.
Get the rom and extract boot.img.
Then use the earlier command I posted.
Yes I haven't seen Indian version ruu until now ..so ruu is out of question AFAIK
Now the factory reset over boot loader should help if you have software problems but as per your replies it didn't work it seems
Tried HTC Dev unlock ? Even if the motherboard is replaced its worth a try
If htcdev unlock failed
Then try to go to recovery first ..from boot loader and if you went to recovery properly let me know
The other solution I propose is try to do change the cid ..even on locked bootloader sometimes it works
Try these commands one by one
fastboot oem writecid HTC__001
Then
fastboot reboot-bootloader
Then check cid using this command
fastboot getvar cid
If cid changed that's a good sign

I said fastboot boot boot.im instead of fastboot flash boot booti.img as the previous one boots the rom with with the new image but doesn't attempt to write that to the boot partition. Hence it might get him a much needed boot to s-off.

Thanks for responding Ganesh. HTC Dev Unlock never worked for me post change of motherboard, but thanks for the suggestion.
I am able to browse the recovery option from bootloader properly.
And it gives me a little satisfaction to let you know that I was able to change the CID to HTC__001 following your steps. Can you suggest what I should be doing next?
