MX Player - Motorola Atrix 2

I've tried at least half a dozen of the popular music apps out there. I've settled on Android Music 4.0.4b2 - I think it does a good job in the sound dept. as well as being easy to use. My main criteria however is the sound quality when choosing a player. I grew up on vinyls. Much of the mainstream digital I hear nowadays sounds too compressed. I convert my CDs to at least 192 bps. Now to the point. I stumbled on a video player called MX Player that also (obviously) plays audio. It was not designed to play audio only so there are no pretty album pictures or anything like that. It does however SOUND fantastic to my ears. I'm using an option that uses software decoding that bypasses the hardware decoder and takes advantage of the ATRIX 2's dual core technology. Now, I'm currently evaluating Neutron MP which is touted to be an audiophiles dream. Without making any setting adjustments I hear no difference between this and my stock Android Music player. I suppose I could go into the plethora of settings and tweak, but before I do I was wondering if anybody has used MX and/or found a similar alternative. The difference in sound quality is very apparent to me over anything I've tried so far. The only negatives for me are the inability to play music and do anything else (music stops when the screen is switched) and no album art. Other than that it really is a dream sounding player.
BTW it was created by quite a large team of developers. I'd love to find out if they've collaborated on a straight audio player as well. I haven't discovered that yet.
Is there a question somewhere in all of that? Ha-ha. Well, comments and suggestions on good sounding music apps are very appreciated. If you haven't given MX Player a try, I recommend it. WARNING, it might change your opinion about your current player's sound quality.
The End.

I love the sound when it plays videos, never thought to use it as a music player.

In my opinion Poweramp is the king of music players. It supports literally every codec out there, you can bypass software decoding by setting the cpu thread level, and the interface is freaking AMAZING. It sounds like I have a $600 Soundblaster card in my phone
It does cost around 5 bucks but it's totally worth it, especially because about 90% of my music collection is lossless!

I've tried Poweramp. Do yourself a favor and try MX Player using the software decoder (bypass android hardware decoder). My files are mostly .ogg converted with variable bit rate. Get some nice headphones, even nice apple earbuds will due. Then get to a quiet place and cue up both players. Play the same passages from both. You might wanna leave off the eq effects on Poweramp to begin with. I can guarantee there is more sound being reproduced with MX.
The End.

Just curious... How did you get an audio file to open with MX?

Just get in settings ->List and go to "video folder". Select your folder. Then in "file extensions" make sure your file type is listed. If it isn't, just "add" it. It lists my CD albums by album title. No artist name or anything.

I do hear slight difference. Not as pronounced as you suggested, but it may be because all my music is encoded in FLAC (direct uncompressed CD rips). If the devs behind MX decide to make a stand alone music player I would definitely give it a long hard look!

Yeah I haven't tried any flac files yet. My .ogg files benefit like nobody's business. Digital music is fine if handled appropriately IMO.

Agreed.

I am an AVID music lover and use my phone for all my listening pleasures. Even in the car as my radio has Bluetooth streaming capabilities. I tried MANY different players and I have never found one better than PlayerPro https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tbig.playerprotrial&hl=en
Playerpro will play ALL types of media including OGG and WMP files. It if you also download the additional DSP pack you have total control via a graphic equalizer. Which has many different settings. PP will also allow you to view song lyrics for the current song you are listening to and it will also pull band pictures as well album art for your entire library. Also, it's completely skinable. I currently have the WMP skin on mine. By far the best Music player in my opnion.

I like Player Pro too. Nothing in my opinion sounds better than MX Player. I just bought Neutron due to overall sound output and the player capabilities. The convenience of it all. I think DeadBeef sounds slightly better than either of the former mentioned with the exception of MX Player. DeadBeef however suffers from the convenience factor (and UI). Ultimately for me it has become a compromise. So much depends on the players output processing. I do agree Player Pro is very good. I'm still evaluating the Neutron UI. Sound for me is about 8/10. MX Player is a 10 in the sound dept. It fails as an audio player (which it is not anyways). But damn it sounds good!
The End.

Okay I can't take it any longer ha-ha. I've gone back to DeadBeef. Its the best sounding out of the audio players for me. Even though I paid twice somehow for Neutron - once through AT&T and once through my bank (thanks Google) I prefer DeadBeef. Its not MX Player audio, but it is enjoyable. BTW, at the risk of sounding like a snob, I generally will not use effects like EQ or Surround etc. unless the original recording is that way off. So all the DSP effects are not an added bonus. If a player can't sound good on its own legs theres no amount of effect that will satisfy me. Sad but true. I really hope ICS brings something new to the table in regards to audio playback. Gingerbread is better than Froyo so here's hoping!

Just curious, what headphones do you use KEB64?

All I have at the moment is Apple ear buds. Not the best, but I can easily hear the differences. I can hear the overall sound qualities with just the phone speaker as well. In my 10 speaker car sound system the differences get a little lost. Its an old system and not extremely hi-fi. I haven't done direct comparisons in the car either. Anything sounds acceptable in that environment. Plus figure in road noise. Where I hear the biggest differences besides overall sound is in quiet passages and simple mixes. Vocals too. Take some of Paul Simon"s stuff on Hearts and Bones. Or Supertramp Breakfast in America. Sorry I don't have more current music to site (I do listen to current music). These are just two albums I found quickly that lend themselves to evaluating the sonic qualities. Supertramp is good for the vocals. Most players render those vocals scratchy, squealy and down right annoying. You can hear the breath of Simon's vocals with MX Player. Overall its easy to imagine each and every instrument or vocal occupying its own space as opposed to sounding as one massive wall of sound indistinguishable from each individual origin.
I'm really surprised more people haven't commented on MX Player's sound quality. That's all this thread was really intended to do; solicit comments. I'd really like to see Google/Android raise the bar in this category. Like I said, maybe with ICS?
I have decided to run with DeadBeef as my player. I figured out how to make playlists. Otherwise the entire library gets lumped into one big playlist by song. Not fun navigating that way. I had to add each artist as a playlist. Better that way. It took some time and is not entirely intuitive, but once setup it gets the job done.
The End.

I'm a very avid music listener and I've tried several varying quality headphones with many different players on my phone (now to include MX Player). I will have to say that I too lean toward PowerAmp. MX Player does sound good but it isn't a true music player and will not do, but I will also say that I didn't hear much (if any) difference in the sound of PowerAmp and MX Player. Some file actually sounded better with PowerAmp IMO.
To defend the EQ, the EQ should not be used to compensate for you music but rather your equipment and personal taste. All equipment, be it a phone, mp3 player, headphones, etc., have "flat" spot in their sound signature, the EQ is used to compensate for those. It is an essential audiophile tool, that is why they make EQ's and DSP's.

I agree EQs can (and should) be used to compensate for equipment. In most cases to remove excess lows or highs. In my experience the tweaking ends up getting out of hand (for me) and while it might sound perfect to my ears one day, it sounds artificial or just wrong the next day. That's just me. On my phone, with and without Apple earbuds I hear a clear distinction in the sound between MX and any other player. I do agree it doesn't make for a straight audio player. Its not intended to be. Thanks for your perspective. Its fun to discuss music. Our ears are all so different. What one hears the other doesn't. Maybe if we switched ears our opinions would be reversed lol. There are no absolutes unless they're measured on paper, but then where's the beauty in that?
The End.

I think people get the wrong idea about EQs sometimes. While you can tweak an EQ to suit your taste, the real idea is to create cutoffs so your equipment sounds "true" all the time. Most speakers come with a spec sheet that tells you what frequencies it's capable of handling, peak watts, and rms (constant watts). If your speaker can only go as low as say -20hz then obviously you want to set your EQ so that it cuts off at -20hz. Most distortion and clipping comes from trying to play freqs that your speakers aren't designed to play. That applies to highs, mids, and lows. Anyways, that's my two cents and I will say, it's nice to just have a decent out of the box player that doesn't just blast noise.

True. Eq's should be used to compensate for a listeners taste's and or the equipment's tendencies. For example, I hade the Senn CX-30 which are bass heavy headphones. I usually toned it down with the eq since it would often overwhelm the rest of the spectrum. When I saved up enough to buy my Shure se535's they have a vitually flat freq response. So i don't touch the eq as everything is already perfectly balanced.

Which Media Player supports loseless Audio

Hey guys!!
Just back my O2 Atom Exec and updated it to WM6. I have an extensive collection of loseless audio and i was curious as to which media player supports it. They are in a couple of format, with most of them being in .wv and .ape and the rest in .flac.
I have installed Coreplayer and Pocket Player 3.2 and tried .wv and .flac files.
Coreplayer plays .flac fine but the library kind of sucks and it ain't easy to browse through your collection of music. However, it wont detect the .wv file.
Pocket Player on the other hand simply wont work with either despite claiming on the website that it does. I have tried opening the .flac audio manually but the name of the song (time after time) becomes illegible (like with my chinese song) and when i try to play it, it doesnt work. It says the filetype is .mp3 but that is not true, it is actually .flac....what the?? Also tried to manually open .wv but doesn't work either
So i am confused as to which program actually does work with all the lossless format? Could someone enlgihten.
Btw i did find this link http://www.losslessaudioblog.com/2006/12/16/mobile-lossless-players/
that had all the supported player that claims to support loseless format.
Also, could someone explain why i cant read chinese/japanese filenames? Any fixs so i can see it properly on pocketplayer/coreplayer?
Common guys, as if no one prefers loseless over mp3..
Sorry mate, I used to play flac using TCPMP( free version of coreplayer) was impressed with the sound but not the size of the files. sticking to AACplus now, good luck
haha are you joking get a bigger memory card or one of those special mp3 player
the quality is just so much better

Music file size ratio is generally a personal preference and you dont just go 'haha' on others preferences. If bigger memory card is not your problem, I'd guess you can always play the high quality lossless WAV on your WMPlayer
Anyway, not much help from me here, read on if you wish.
Anyway, as for lossless or not audio file format, I really wonder how much difference does it make. I personally can't really tell the difference as I'm using relatively low quality earphones and stuff, and consider I listen it when I'm on the move, where you get street noises and such (despite the noise isolation property of the earphones). So, it would be interesting if you were to do a blind test yourself on a relatively real environment. That, is to get a list of songs, say 10-20 songs, all both in the flac, and mp3 formats. Get a friend of you to play you these songs at random (using Coreplayer, which support both format), then you make a guess on which format the song is playing. Get a good number of samples and see if you score above 75%. If you score around 40-60%, chances are, you are thinking (mentally biased) that the sound is actually better than it is (e.g. due to the distortion of the A2D converter, crack in the shielding screen on your headphone, street noises, etc.). If you were to score 25% or lower, that's interestingly MP3 is better (much unlikely).
If you really do this, let me know the results Much eager to know it.
Problem for me is, I am the type who like to have just one device to rule "do" them all, that's why my lowly wizard does it all, my video player, music player, pda and telephone. I only got 2Gb but I got heaps of songs on it plus some movies.
AAc plus is good mate better than MP3 IMHO, I heard flac but the size is just not worth it.. and I don't clean my ears that often ;-) so why bother..

[Q] Android music player with replaygain?

Haven't found one yet and hoping someone could give an answer here.
I know PowerAMP has it on a roadmap. Rockbox is supposedly working on an app. Haven't found something that works.
Appreciate your help.
Something that works....
Mp3Gain for the PC. Simply add entire music collection, set level, run job and then copy to phone.
And the kludgy solution it is :/
Thx.
MP3Gain
Hi,
that is a possible workaround but no solution for people with a big database and sense of quality since reencoding means loss of quality and time.
I'm looking for a media player with Replaygain as well.

MP3Gain is only lossy in extreme cases, as it merely alters global gain, which is a parameter of the mp3 format. It also adds tags with info, so changes can be undone.
But yes, it's just a workaround and pretty annoying. A player with ReplayGain is needed - hopefully one that can kill the retarded inbuilt compression of many handsets.
mp3gain is a workaround just in cases in which all your collection is in mp3.
As ogg vorbis gives a better quality at same file size, most of my collection is in this format.
Just tried the latest build of rockbox, at
http://audio-life.co.uk/apps/rockbox_android/
Worked for my nexus s, and tried it does support replaygain!
The interface is really kludgy though.

It is having this issue though:
http://forum.powerampapp.com/index....otificationtextringtone-and-playing-poweramp/
Just to clear up a misconception that seems to have arisen in the thread. Using MP3Gain is not at all detrimental to quality. It doesn't alter the music track at all but instead adds replaygain data to a tag.
There's no 'lossy' to it at all. As for 'kludgy'... in-app, on the fly replaygain will be shockingly bad in comparison to the MP3Gain method.
i just read about mp3gain and there are two methods. one of then does alter the mp3-file but losslessly! and it even creates tags to undo that process. but that only works for mp3. which really is an outdated format.

I know this is an old thread, but after doing many months of researching, I would not advise using mp3gain, that is of course unless you're sure you want to permanently modify your mp3 files. The "lossless" method does not just simply write tags in the files. It does do that, but that's not all it does. All it writes to the tag is the UNDO information. What happens if you bork your APE metadata and you want to undo it? You're screwed.
Anyway, I'm reviving this thread because I've been struggling in all the years I've had an android device to find a suitable music solution.
Currently, the music player I use that supports ReplayGain is DeaDBeeF. And it's free. Unfortunately, it doesn't load album art correctly. The dev said months and months ago that he was working on it, but I haven't seen any updates. It now has a holo themed UI, but it's not the most attractive, though It's not necessarily ugly (imo).
Winamp supports RG, but only if you pay for the PRO version.
There were other free players on the market that supposedly support RG, but a couple of them had the exact same description while coming from different developers. Seemed shady to me. And most of them looked fairly ugly. The only one I tried had some weird option for controlling the strength of the RG. That seemed odd to me, as the value for RG itself determines the dB. So I had to question whether it was really using the RG values, or doing something kludgy with it.
I wonder how hard RG support is to actually code. If a small, simple player like DB has it built in for free, surely we can add it to Apollo?

Even, 8 thousand sounds is time consuming with this. I have done each artist separately so far with what I got but to keep doing this because a player does not have same volume option on it, and especially 2 out of 3 players does not have this option, is stupid. Especially paid for the apps, and the devs do not even want to bother to add it. Actually, I only asked BlackPlayer dev to add it, and they won't even bother.
They rather spend more time on customizing looks, than adding audio features. It is a freaking audio player ffs. The 3 players I have paid for are Poweramp, Stellio, and BlackPlayer. Currently, using Stellio because the audio is comparable to Poweramp, but not using Poweramp because I was so called patiently waiting for v3 beta, but max is taking forever.
I love the look of Stellio and also the audio set to preset bass&treble is just awesome sounding on the builtin equalizer. With my Samsung Galaxy J3 Luna Pro, I got the media volume limiter set to where it is max volume without going more louder and hurting my ears, which is another nice feature, but the ones that are loud enough maxed are great sounding, until the lower tracks start, and they are not so great at lower volume.
That is why I am after this going to email Stellio dev and ask about adding replaygain or something like Spotify has in settings, under options for enabling same volume for all tracks or songs.
I was going to suggest jetAudio Plus and foobar2000 but don't bother. Those apps are too unstable.
There are a lot of Android players with ReplayGain support:
Omnia, GoneMad, Vanilla Music, foobar2000 Mobile, AIMP, Vinyl Music Player, Pulsar, Oto Music, Poweramp, Neutron Player, PlayerPro, jetAudio, MediaMonkey, FiiO Music, and probably a few more that I don't know of.
All of them can use per-album ReplayGain, those which don't have an option for it in the settings automatically choose it over per-track ReplayGain.
All but jetAudio, MediaMonkey and FiiO Music allow you to reduce loudness for tracks without ReplayGain metadata.

I don't think you want what Spotify has in its settings, it ruins audio quality for many songs by raising their volume with the help of dyamic compression.
Because volume levels on Spotify are already quite similar the option is not that useful anyway. That's because Spotify, before reencoding, already does some normalizing. From what I've read they probably set the peaks of all albums to -2dB, then lower the loudness of all albums with a loudness above -14 LUFS to a loudness of -14 LUFS, which means only tracks with huge dynamic range should have non-optimal loudness relative to the other tracks.
I would leave that option off unless you're in a very noisy environment.

Low freq. distortion with Sense Music Player

Has anyone noticed low frequency distortion when playing MP3s (and perhaps other audio formats) in the Sense Music Player? It's subtle, but definitely there. It's more noticeable in music with lots of bass. I know it's the Sense Music Player's fault because PowerAMP sounds just fine playing the exact same MP3s. Since SRS WOW can only be enabled in the Sense Music Player, that's the one I want to use. PowerAMP's equalizer, despite what people may say, is garbage. Aside from the low frequency distortion, the Sense Music Player sounds way better than PowerAMP when SRS is enabled.
The distortion I'm talking about doesn't seem to interfere much with the actual music quality. It's just an annoying, low-pitched popping noise that you can hear in the background so to speak. I hear the sound regardless of whether SRS is enabled or not. The equalizer can be on or off too. It's even there when listening to music via Bluetooth A2DP. I have several high quality headphones and the distortion effect is present in all of them.
I've tried several different ROMs and kernels (including the stock) and the issue has been present in all of them. Has anyone had the same experience? To be clear, I'm not looking for advice on what to use besides the Sense Music Player to avoid this issue. I've tried them all and they're all garbage. The Sense Music Player with SRS WOW enabled is the closest thing to my HD2 with the SRS WOW HD software audio driver. The HD2 (running WinMo 6.5.3) sounds better than any portable music player I've ever heard. You have to know what equalizer settings to use in the SRS control panel for the type of music you're listening to, of course. I just want to see if others can confirm my findings. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

You must not have read my entire post. I specifically said that I'm not looking for someone to recommend using another music player. I am concerned about the sound quality. I know of no other music player that can take advantage of SRS WOW capabilities of this phone. Aside from the distortion I described, the sound quality of the Sense player is better than anything else available.

[Q] Your audio ripping techniques!

Ok, I know this isn't an audiophile forum per se, but I think we'd all agree that the Infuse coupled with Voodoo Control is a high-end portable music player.
I've recently been re-ripping all of my CDs to FLAC using MediaMonkey Gold. I thought I found the perfect audiophile quality format, albeit heavy on space. I uploaded them to Google Music and downloaded the same songs just to compare. What I've found is my music sounds flat, tinny, and dead whereas Google Music sounded lively and clear while the bass trembled cleanly with no distortion through my Shure E4Cs. The E4C's strong suit is clarity but kind of lacks in the lower frequencies. To hear bass thump and roll while still being able to hear Eminem pronounce every syllable as well as being able to discern every hi hat and snare all at the same time... its quite short of amazing!
So to save myself from having to re-buy every CD that I own through Google Music, what are some of the programs and methods you use to rip an audio CD? Also, am I wrong to believe that every CD drive should be able to produce the same quality file? If not, then I guess I'm just out of luck.

Edge? What is the ultimate music listening/management suite of apps for the S7 edge?

Folks, I have a pretty large non-DRM .mp3 music library in iTunes. I have used ISyncr in the past, with my Galaxy s5, to bring down playlists and music and synchronize my Android phone to iTunes. Lately it hasn't been working well, probably because I have well over a thousand playlists.
I am also looking for the best music player, and wish to add Lyrics, and am intrigued by the Viper 4Android sound app, but I don't want to root my phone.
What do you all recommend as the best music player, the best app to sync iTunes, the best audio effects suite of apps to a music lover? Thanks so very much in advance for your help!
I've used all the free and paid music players over the years. Neutron is truly the only professional solution. It literally has every feature, where most players offer half of what neutron does. Poweramp is good for consumers too. Idk about iTunes syncing, I organize all my music in folders. Neutron has the most full featured non-root EQ, but if you're rooted eXtreme beats is coming out with a new revision soon.
for a regular user i think poweramp is the best music player.. nice sound and controls plus skinning. you can import playlists and export them as well.
Neutron is widely considered the best by audiophiles followed by Onkyo player (unlocked).
personally i leave the mp3 tagging stuff off of the phone. I havent found any apps that will properly list and tag mp3's as well as i can do it on a computer.
Assuming you're on windows, use MP3Tag to manage all your tags. it works on way more than mp3's, but it is by far the best solution for media library management.
For playback, i jump around on windows. Musicbee looks nice and is full featured. Winamp is nice. Foobar is very spartan and quite ugly but it works well and you can make it look more or less however you want, though it takes a lot of effort.
On the phone itself i use poweramp for music playback (though i do find the interface a bit clunky, and i dislike the "queue" thing it does). Neutron always gets good ratings. I had a horrible time with onkyo hf player. winamp is OK at best.
For audiobooks, i use SmartAudiobook Player. there are some weird bugginess issues, like when my head unit automatically starts the audiobook app instead of music, and refuses to play nice with it. Like if i stop the audiobook player and start music, sometimes the music will immediately stop and audiobooks will play instead. but my car is so damn loud that i use headphones while driving most of the time anyways.
I think JetAudio plus does a great job.
Where do I start lol...I have slowly turned into an audiophile and always look for the best audio on my phone so I have tried just about all the most popular music players / audio configs i could find on my phone,
I have also tried external DACS / Amplifiers and to be honest with my setup did not do much for me..I am running SOL Master Tracks XC headphones which are amazing with this phone and would totally recommend Neutron or Poweramp they seem to give the best sound from all I have tried and are also very customisable with the sound...
ViperFX is a must!! and the options / tweaks are just insane and what a difference it makes with a simple change of Convoler and EQ,
I use ViperFX with Dolby Atmos and Beats Audio which seems to me the best option and I flick between Neutron and Poweramp which i am still not decided on
What do you guys think of PlayerPro Music Player v3.7 ? I think it has the most features but I don't know how it compares to others, so I need your help to decide .

Rocket Player Pro is great! Using it for years!
Been using Timber for a bit now. Mostly use it because it looks really slick. I like the material design it has.

Player pro amazing app, I switched to Neutron which I am currently using and was using Poweramp before that, I find Neutron to give a more Natural better sound than others but Neutron / Poweramp / Player Pro and Jet music are ones id recommend
I'm a Poweramp fan myself.
There's an option in the app to opt into the beta, which let's you try an overhauled new version which improves on a lot of the old usability issues.

I use this. I've used it for a few years. I love it. Plenty of skins, downloadable DSP Pack for additional audio controls, has it's own lock screen. :good:
Thank you for your replies..
So I guess if I stick with PlayerPro Music Player ,I am not missing any other features and the sound of other players is not greater/nicer than this ?!
Stock, because there's no real difference.
the best is power amp beta version try someday
