Hi everyone!
I have a problem with my Samsung galaxy tab 7+, when I have set automatic brightness and it sets brightness to minimum (it also happens when I manually set minimum brightness) the screen keeps flashing very fast. Does anyone have this issue too? Is it normal or I should give it back to the shop?

Mine seems to have a mind of its own regarding brightness as well. I've disabled auto brightness and just manually adjust as needed
Yeah but when I set manually the lowest brightness level the screen keeps flashing between darkest and a bit brighter.

Try to disable the "auto adjust screen power" at the screen setting inside the settings. It may help. I am having the problem to the auto adjust brightness...Everytime when I take out the phone under the hot sun it seem like respond very slow to adjust the brightness to suit the current brightness. So decide to do manual adjust on the brightness.
Mine problem seems to be caused by the device not the software, next week I will send it back to shop, because this screen is really annoying, especially when I use it in night when the light are turned off, the screen keeps flashing all the time, we will see what the service would say. But if there won't be ICS next week propably I'll change my p6200 to something different.

If you bought this device just because you thought an ICS upgrade was imminent, you bought the wrong tablet.
I'd have to say it's a hardware issue, since I haven't seen what you've reported. No firmware updates were available? I recall there was one a few months ago to fix some minor issues, even though it stayed on 3.2.
Similar thing happens to mine too. Every time I lower the brightness to the very least amount, it keeps flickering. But at like 3~5% brightness, it's normal and does not flicker. :| Please tell me if you find a solution. Thanks. )
Note: It sometimes does it and sometimes doesn't. During charging process with minimal brightness this does not happen.
Mine doesn't have this issue all the time too, sometimes it is sometimes not.
About the ICS I bought this tablet from ibood and there was written "possibility to upgrade to ICS" so I thought the update is already available but I just have to do it by myself, also there was written that it would be full white (it was also shown on the photo) but it isn't, just a white back... So don't trust ibood in the future

I've sent mine to the shop, because of this brightness problem and some others (freezes, sometimes the screen didn't response etc. etc.), will see what would happen.

This is the solution. It is separate and different from the "Auto Brightness" setting.
I've tried that "auto adjust screen power" thing long ago and it didn't work. Tried it again, still getting the flickers at lowest brightness. Can anyone please post another solution or of those who sent their devices to Samsung tell what is the problem? I don't want to go to Samsung because I have to unroot, uninstall busybox, put all the bloatware back and etc.
I think it's a hardware problem. Some screens do the flickering when they have to work on low power (=low brightness).

Went to Samsung, but the workers couldn't see it. >.> Ergo, they didn't try to fix it.

Hi all,
Is there any way to reduce screen brightness even lower than what we could do with built-in settings? Thanks.

I'd like to know this too, I have it at the lowest setting usually and it's still a little bright, I don't even need to turn it up outdoors.
On my modded galaxy s, the darky rom come with an app called "screen filter", it enable you to get your screen WAY dimmer, may be worth a look for in honeycomb, nice for froyo/gingerbread, you even have it in the task menu... my 0.02cents
I noticed that i always have to set it to the max cause it cut down on the glaze. This screen is like a mirror during the day.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731032
try that app (requires root)
AdjBrightness doesn't work. I'm running Modaco ROM HR3, which means it's rooted, but AdjBrightness keeps saying it requires root. Thanks anyway.

Try "Brightness level" by curvefish. I can't guarantee it will work but it works on my g tablet?
Sent from my DROIDX using Tapatalk
I don't think any apps can make it dimmer, without rooting and system access. Brightness level widget doesnt make it any dimmer (it reports the brightness level as 8%, when the system brightness bar is all the way to the left, and when set to 0% in BLW the screen doesnt change).
One of the first things that I look for before buying any device is can the screen be set to a low enough brightness. Manufactures often overlook this in their quest to make screens as bright as possible, and in one case I ended up taping a piece of plastic over the screen of an Acer netbook as a filter to get the brightness down low enough to use in a dim room. In the case of the Transformer, I could not try before I bought, but the screen does go down pretty dim.
+1 for Screen Filter. I don't have a TF yet so I haven't tried it but it works great on my SGS and doesn't require root. I suspect it may not work as well on an LCD as on my SAMOLED screen on my phone since it doesn't actually reduce the backlight, but it's still worth a try.
Thanks, screen filter works!
Hey guys,
I'm using my new nexus 5 for about two days now and something seems to be wrong with auto brightness (at least) on my device. The phone makes the screen brighter just fine, but dimming it when it gets in a dark environment doesn't seem to work really well. Can someone give this a try please?
Just turn off the lights in a room and see if the screen adjusts correctly. On mine it doesn't.
Turning on and off auto brightness fixes the issue but as soon as the screen gets brighter again, the problem starts...
Thanks in advance

Good spot, I seem to experience this as well ! Exactly as you say works fine until the brightness gets set higher then it wont ever fall back its as if it can never lower only increase brightness.... odd!
Did you give it a minute to adjust?
Since my Nexus 5 isn't here yet this is what I've observed on stock Android in the Galaxy Nexus and other phones:
While it should go down after some time it's pretty common for auto brightness not to dim down as soon as it gets darker. You don't want your brightness to jump up and down just because the lighting changes for a second. And since turning the brightness up is much more relevant than down it goes up almost instantly but before dimming back down it monitors the environment for a while.
When you turn auto brightness off and on again you force the sensor into a new reading so this should set the brightness to the correct level without delay.
But it wouldn't be the first time auto brightness was bugged on a phone.
The delay really annoyed me on my tablet running vanilla 4.2 so installed lux which works well. You set the brightness how you want it at a given light level and then it sets the brightness according to the ambient light each time you wake it up and holds that setting until the next time you wake it up... best of both worlds.

You're right gokpog,it does work I just didn't give it time. It took around 10 seconds to change the backlight levels which is much longer than the nexus 4 which is why I didn't notice it. Hopefully there is a more sensitive curve in the future

Yep this has been the case with stock android for a while. Feature or flaw you decide but it is what it is and is across the board no matter what device if its using stock android on it

Well it doesn't seem to work as expected to me: go to a bright place, then to a very dark one. Yes it will dim a bit but not quite enough. Remain in the dark room and turn off auto brightness. Then turn it on again. The screen will get significantly darker than it was before

I have find too that the automatic brightness take time to decrease brightness, also increase, but the most annoying is that with the same level of light and without moving the phone, the brightness goes up and down erratically, without a reason, it didn't happen with any of my previous phones
I just installed this app today, I've had similar problems that weren't present on my N4. With this app running, when I turn the phone screen toward a light, it brightens, and back to face a darker place it dims almost immediately. To give me more battery life I've tuned the brightness curve to be a bit low, N5's auto seemed to be too bright for me overall anyway. Be sure to tinker with both the settings and advanced settings areas, by default the changes are sharp but you can make them fade instead. Fixed the problems I had at least.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nnevod.loggraph
I have the same problem with my Nexus 5.
Additionally, since day one, I've noticed that the phone consistently auto adjusts the screen to be slightly brighter than necessary given the ambient light.
I just noticed this issue last night, or at least it's similar. I was reading in bed for a few hours and occasionally (maybe every 15 minutes) the screen would suddenly dim to about half brightness and then brighten back to where it was originally. It was driving me nutz. I've also had a few random reboots, though not while I was using it. I'd notice it on my table booting up. FYI, this is stock with the latest update, no root or unlocking, and still has plenty of free space in memory. I've only had it for about 4 days.
Got a problem when using Google maps for navigation with the screen dimming and then after about a minute the screen switches off completely, am I missing a setting somewhere to stop this happening? Thanks

Are you rooted?
No man totally stock, can you sort it if your rooted? Ta

No, i just wondered if you'd disabled some of its permissions using root. It's supposed to dim to save battery if you're just on a long straight road etc. Then when it comes to saying directions again and junctions it should light back up to normal
Ah ok thanks it dims fine but then the screen goes off...

Have you tried simply clearing the apps data and cache, force stopping it and then rebooting the phone before opening again?
Edit-
I'm just about to set off for work and gonna use maps actually so I'll see what mine does as I'm unsure I've actually used it on my z5 yet
Mine works as normal, tried and tested
Thanks mate I'll remove / re install and give it a try this morning

Getting somewhere still not as it should be though..
Got a stereo in my car that supposed to support android mirrorlink (it doesn't work) but what it does do is charge just like a mains charger, anyway what i've found when the stereo is in mirrorlink mode it switches the phone screen off, when i take the stereo out of mirrorlink mode the phone screen stays on, it is however really really dim just about visible i tried without the cable charging at all and still the same...
Thanks for the suggestions though if i can figure out how to have it not go so dim it'll be fine... (i would say it goes down to maybe 10% screen brightness maybe even less)
So as soon as you use maps to navigate whether it's on charge or not the screen just goes stupidly dim?
What about ticking the stay awake box and have it charging?

Yeah after about 10sec the screen goes really dim and stays like that...
Tried your above suggestion yesterday (thought it might work too) doesn't make any difference, i have ambient setting enabled in the phone settings i'll try disabling that on the way home see if that makes a difference and do some googling later on, cheers though...
Crazy thought, your case or car holder isn't simply just covering up the light sensor is it?
Well I'm confused but the issue is sorted turned adaptive brightness setting off screen was perfect, so 5min later turned adaptive brightness back on expecting screen to dim it didn't so no idea but seems sorted #bangheadonwall

I have no problem with screen brightness changing or the on/off function from the magnetic cover, and have great battery life after the upgrade to marshmallow. My tablet had not been rooted and I am using a generic cover.

The adaptive brightness is a "feature" of the Asus software Vivid Display, it attempts to change the brightness of the screen to somehow compensate for the darkness of the content. There is nowhere to turn it off. It does my head in, i was able to disable it with root before the update, and with the Marshmallow update you can use the debloater tool. Disable packages called VisualMaster and Splendid, that seems to fix it.

My kids have some games that do that, more than likely the game has a permission to Keep the screen awake, you might be able to deny this permission now with M installed. I haven't upgraded their tablets yet but once I do I will check for that permission.
My big issue also relates to brightness. I use on screen alerts so that the screen lights whenever I get an alert. The problem is that with MM the screen dims just before it times out and turns off. I think it did this in earlier versions of android but with MM the dimming effect is so great that the screen is unreadable. This problem occurs even with auto brightness off and with the screen plenty bright...except for the few seconds before it turns off. Any ideas on if this can be fixed would be appreciated.

Update: Can't write to OTG USB drive; Nook FC; FBReader FC
Mm is a mixed bag for me, to the point where I would go back to rooted LP with Xposed if I could.
Biggest issue is that I can no longer write to an OTG drive. I'd prefer to use the SD card as internal storage and use OTG on the relatively rare occasions when I need to move files. I can read the OTG Ok, but not write. It doesn't seem to be a drive or cable issue; I've tried multiples of both.It *does* seem to be a MM issue, because my phone (LG G3, unrooted) has the same problem.
Second issue is thst both the Nook reader app and FBReader crash. Both work OK on other MM tabs (granted, they are rooted) and on my LG G3 phone (bone stock).
Just venting!
Update: the OTG issue is not as bad as I indicated. ES File Explorer Pro is a lot fussier than the ASUS native file manager. Once I grant access via the file manager, ES seems to read and write OK. I finally got FBReader to work by uninstalling the Premium version, installing the free version, and then upgrading again to Premium. Now the Nook issue is the only remaining problem, and I can work around that by stripping the DRM from my books using Calibre in the PC so I can access them via FBReader.

Meanwhile my NEXUS N7 was turned off for 6 days and still shows 98% charge when booted up. Intolerable. No more Asus products for me.

Wait. You said you powered it down and then later "booted up." So the unit was off, as opposed to sleeping? If so, then the problem isn't related to the OS, 'cause the OS isn't operating.. It's your battery. It's self-discharging too fast.
Is there MM update for CN version?
Hi all, i,ve just read that there is a MM updates for Z580CA, and it said we need to download it manually (not OTA) . But when i checked to the asus website there is only updated firmware for WW and JP Version,
So.. is the CN Version will have the updates soon? ( i don' know if it possible to change SKU, but i've read the update can only applied to a same SKU, ex, WW to WW)

Exactly. Battery or a short circuit. But it seems a short would have other, more disastrous consequences. Since it doesn't really fit this thread I am asking a moderator to move to the appropriate one.
Didn't see this posted here yet, but forgive me if I missed it.
Trying to find out if anyone has seen or heard of any acknowledgement from Google regarding this. My new Pixel 3 (Verizon; non XL) since day 1 has had an annoying issue with the screen flashing when ambient screen engages. I have my settings with alwayson set to off, and new notifications set to on. If the screen is asleep and I get a text or any notification, the ambient screen wakes and will initially make the entire screen flash white very quickly.
I do not get a flash of the screen in any other scenario when the phones on, it only seems to be when the screens totally asleep and the ambient screen wakes. I can unlock the phone or hit the power button to fully wake the phone to my home screen with no flashing. Its not every single time, but its very often. I do notice sometimes when it doesn't flash the whole screen, the time or text on the ambient display will be at full brightness when it first wakes for a split second and then will go to the dim text Im used to seeing.
Replaced the phone through Verizon. Got another brand new one with the same exact problem. This one even flashes on reboot occasionally just before the white "Google" screen pops up. Google had me send them a bug report this time and are supposed to be having their dev team look at it.
WHY.
Mine did it once
Sent from my Pixel 3 using Tapatalk
I've also now noticed mine will flash in Instagram when I "like" something lol. Just the picture flashes within the app itself in that case, not the whole screen. Such a weird thing, that may have something to do with the app on the new pixel? I don't even know anymore.
I just saw the white flash. It was only for a few ms but it looked like a full brightness white flash on the whole screen. I had just set my phone down and I think the AOD was coming on.
Weird.
Yeah I have a feeling this is happening on way more devices than we're reading about. I hope it's addressed. Sometimes my notification audio cuts out real quick too. Hoping it's just all memory related.
I have this weird kind of screen flickering on my device as soon as I use the fingerprint area to turn the phone on. It is very faint and fast but its like static lines for half a second when the screen comes on??

Strange, I haven't had any issues like that using the fingerprint reader or just hitting the power button. Mine are all directly related to ambient screen waking.
My Pixel 3 is doing the same thing when I unlock it. Flashes like taking a selfie... I have even looked for the selfie to no avail.
It does not do this regularly, very random.

Report it to Google. I feel like it's something they're aware of (I hope) but support certainly isn't saying so if they are.
I saw a post on Android Police about bug trackers and read in some of the comments that people were having problem with screen flashing. Some of them said it was related to the always on display. Mine was flashing like white static lines. But it was only for half a second when you turn on the screen and it didnt happen every time, it was random. I turned off the AOD and it never happened again. Kinda sucks cause I like AOD. But that tells me it is a software problems and not hardware.
I turned off AOD too, for 1 day; the next day I turned AOD back on. I have not had a screen flash since (a few days now).

Try rebooting. I bet it's still happening you just may not be noticing. I've had my AOD off for a while and as soon as I turn the new notifications option it comes back. Not every time but still often.
I'm having the same issue, doesn't happen all the time but I can reproduce it usually by unlocking the device, locking it then when ambient display comes on, unlock it and the screen flashes/flickers. I've only managed to do it with ambient screen set to always on.
I've RMA'd this morning so I'll report back when the new phone comes.
I hope you RMA's for other reasons too because it is likely that you will get a phone with the same flickering problem. I think it is a software issue esp since it goes away after we turn off AOD.

Quick update. My new phone arrived this morning and I've managed to get the screen to flash once so far where as my old one would do it 8 times out of 10. I feel like this is a poor display hardware problem rather than software.
I believe or rather am hoping that because it only happens when you turn on AOD that it is a software issue and not a hardware one. The only way something will be done is enough people complain on a bug tracker.
