Carrier IQ - HTC One S

I just got my HTC One S via T-Mobile and I was curious to see if Carrier IQ was installed. If so, are there any measures I can take to disable/remove it while I await the development of some Custom ROMs? Ever since I read the article on Carrier IQ, I feel really uncomfortable using a stock ROM so though I've had my phone for a few days, I've yet to do anything except root it.

Yes carrier IQ is there as an option. You can either choose to allow T-Mobile to have the info or not. You should see the agreement accepting or denying the service as you set up your device.
Sent back in time to find Marty.

that option isn't good enough for me... i want it GONE...
are there apps, like what truecrypt does for pc to encrypt the whole file system and there is a password at boot? i can't find anything like that, that does just that

Might want to throw this out to one of the devs in the Q&A section. Not sure if this has been addressed yet with the One S.
Sent back in time to find Marty.

well surely, if im right, that carrier IQ will be an apk installed on the phone, to collect info ??
if thats the case, install titanium backup or a root exploerer (needs root) and hunt that bad boy down and remove it..
might as well remove all the bloatware too. get your self a nice clean stock ROM without having to flash anything........except recovery and root zip lol

Thanks for reminding me about this. After looking into it the damn thing is installed on the phone =(. It's installed as a rootkit though so you can't see it in titanium backup to remove it.
It exists in /data/data/com.carrieriq.tmobile and also /system/lib something something. It's late here so forgive my lack of effort.
my attempts failed at removing it. It keeps rebuilding itself in data/data even after I delete it but not in /system/lib.
Although a pretty awesome thing is that after deleting **** it no longer has that red text warning about my boot loader being unlocked when my phone boots up.

Ok, looks like it's removed completely. Again it's late so I'll give a better answer tomorrow. There was some entry for it in TB the icon for it is pink and looks like a cog.

ICS has this option built in, at least in the EU ROMs of the HOS it is available. You can encrypt the system/data area or everything (sys/data and the sd storage partition).
However, just like TC this will not help you with any malware that is already on the system at the point of encryption. And unlike TC you can't just "decrypt" and retain the data. Removing the encryption means going back to total factory reset and a full wipe of data.

can you remember the exact location / name of this file that removed it ?? would also like it gone

IQ-tmobile-release-signed.apk
IQToggle.signed.apk
I found these in "/system/app" using Root Explorer. Going to look into the other locations mentioned in the earlier post. Will report back.

Is called system manager application? Can you just deplete those files and you're good?

/system/app
IQ-tmobile-release-signed.apk
IQToggle.signed.apk
/data/data
com.carrieriq.tmobile
com.carrieriq.tmobile.IQToggle
I deleted all .apk's and .odex files in the /system/app and both of the directories in /data/data, rebooted phone and none of it repopulated... So far so good.

What u deleted to get rid of the this is for development blabla stuff??

figured that out first day glad some one else posted how to it saves me from having to write a tutorial

Actually i couldn't really think of a possible explanation why the red warning text on the first splash is generated by any file within the android system as it is loaded before any android component. the first splash has its own dedicated area on the and from what i know from the HD2 it can only be altered by a flasher that is capable to write to that adress range. That again is only possible if security is disabled (S-OFF).
If this theory is wrong please correct me but i am fairly sure the red warning cannot be undone by removing carrier IQ related files.

So what exactly does this record/report?
Well google pointed me at A LOT of info about this, I had no idea about it till now. Was surprised to see how many people have open suites going on with the company. I used the voodoo scanner and it's on my phone but it says it's not running. I am going to rip it out anyway, can't trust companies these days.
Well followed the steps and it's down to 170 now.

Lol

[Q] Cant Install to System/App

It appears we can't install apk's by dropping them into system/app. I can side load easily running rooting stock but can't get them to install when dropping them into that folder. Just for kicks I tried dropping them into data/app as well with no luck. Any ideas?
Just tried pushing it with adb, the still sits there in system/app but doesn't install.

It can depend on what it is and what ROM you are on. I just took the Camera.apk from MIUI and put it in CM7, and it worked.
HTCCamera.apk will not, however.
Did you reboot after putting it in /System/App? Also, did you set the permissions correctly?

That actually works with my theory, I think sense is the culprit. MUI and CM7 are both free of sense so you should be able to drop into system/app. HTCCamera requires sense to function properly.
So now i've accidentally removed HTC stock clock app (WorldClock.apk) from my Revolution HD 3.0 there's no way to reinstall it??
I made it to place the backuped apk from pc to /system/app but it doesn't install
and if i try to do adb install this is the result:
C:\Android\platform-tools>adb install WorldClock.apk
1700 KB/s (517095 bytes in 0.296s)
pkg: /data/local/tmp/WorldClock.apk
Failure [INSTALL_FAILED_DEXOPT]

how so? i googled something to the effect of an inability to install apps, and this is labeled "cannot install to system/app," which is what browser.apk is...??? ive tried everything i can find, and i cant find a solution anywhere. this seems extremely close to my predicament, different only in the apps referred to in the conversation. am i missing something?

This. If you use adb to try to install something, AFAIK it's the same as just clicking "install" on your phone. But that doesn't work for system apps (often), so what you'll want to do is
Code:
adb remount
adb push Worldclock.apk /system/app/
and see if it shows up then, since that's normally how this is done.

You might want to ask for this to be moved to the xperia forums or post there entirely. As i can see this is already causing confusing because you are in the wrong location for this problem. IE. 95% of the people posting here probably have inspire or desireHD phones. Might make more sense to post where more people use the xperia.
Problems and fixes most times will not work cross platforms.

a better analogy would be like going to best buy tech department to ask about a problem for your fridge. while they probably could figure it out after troubleshooting, it would have been faster to just go to the appliance department support. Just saying the OP would be best to get support from users that may have encountered this exact problem on the same phone so it would be a quick fix instead of working through the process. Dunno bout you but the less time i am stuck with a problem, the better

Root without Superuser.apk

Modded the version my buddy dodgejcr put out for the shift to work with the g2x, tested and working on cm7 & miui. Just go into recovery and flash f-su.zip.
I know some people will disagree with me on this, but I think superuser.apk is unnecessary and a nuisance. Any app that can really do damage with root permissions probably has it's own root method built into it anyway, after all, how many rogue apps have only affected rooted phones? So I choose to grant root to every app I download, if I didn't want it to have access to my phone, I wouldn't have downloaded it.

You're right. I do disagree. You may understand the implications behind granting root access like it's an open door but for anyone who does not here goes. Root access to the file system means you can do anything to it. If granted root access, a renegade application can delete important system files and steal personal information. For instance, take Windows. Windows essentially runs the user at root level, not taking into account UAC in Vista on up. This is why it's so much easier to have viruses steal personal information, disable anti virus applications and delete system files. Superuser limits this access on Android to applications you specifically grant this access to. Is it necessary? No. Can renegade applications still attained root access even with it? Yes. However it just adds a layer of security that I find very useful indeed. Again though this is personal preference. I just wanted to make sure people who didn't know were educated before they do something like this. Carry on

[Q] Removing beats audio

I am running Lithium as my rom, which has beats audio installed. This has caused some problems for me, as it lowers audio quality when using poweramp. If you disagree, keep it to yourself and don't tell me I am wrong in this thread. Wow, that just sounded a lot meaner than it was meant to. Anyways, is there any way to remove it completely?

I was looking at that at one time... and I started writing down all of the files that get installed with the mod... but then I got to the /system/etc/ folder and gave up...
If you're feeling motivated, check out the attached zip for everything it installs, and then you could attempt to remove those files... by your method of choice.
NOTE: NO ONE SHOULD ATTEMPT TO FLASH THE ATTACHMENT - sorry for yelling, but it's not a flashable zip, just the system folder from the BeatsAudiob0314.zip for reference...
You should probably cross-reference and take the proper files from a stock ROM you have lying around though, because a few of the files are replaced, like /system/etc/media_profiles.xml and /lib/libreverbwrapper.so & libvisualizer.so (and possibly others?)... In fact, if you do manage to do all of that it would definitely be worth making a "remove beats audio" script/zip
Well, I removed it from the rom after setting it up with rom kitchen. This has worked before, but now it will not flash, I get an error in CWM that says something about status 0 and it aborts the zip install I think that has something to do with the update binary. anyone have any ideas?

Yea, that sounds like an updater-script or update-binary file issue... You could try borrowing the META-INF folder from a different flashable rom...
Or maybe you could remove the necessary files through adb in recovery (or make a script if you can - that's beyond me) and make a smaller update.zip with the files you need to replace. I have much better luck making small flashable zips as opposed to full roms. Either way, good luck! And keep us posted..

Status 0 refers to an issue eighths updater-script. Make sure you have a semicolon at the end of every line, and the line endings are in Linux format if you using windows.

...and a blank line at the bottom of the script..
Another thought... don't know how well it would work but - you could possibly make a cwm backup, get it on to your comp, open the system.ext3.tar with 7-zip, and do all of your deleting/replacing through 7-zip... then close her up, move it back to your sdcard and restore as normal (or restore system only).. obviously not touching the name or md5 sum..
again, never tried anything like that, but it sounds possible (in my head at least)...

That I do not know.
But, if you could do it for our phone first (keep it in the family ), I'm sure others would eventually port it to their device if it doesn't work right.. sounds like it'd be a very useful "anti-mod", if you will...

But, if you could do it for our phone first (keep it in the family ), I'm sure others would eventually port it to their device if it doesn't work right.. sounds like it'd be a very useful "anti-mod", if you will...

EDIT: Just found an unistall zip by H3ROS here (check posts #18 & 20). But, I think it's a dud.. I opened the zip and it's only the pvplayer.cfg.

all right, I will finish it with what I have for replacements on our phone, then see if anyone else will test it on some others. is there a good way to make sure it worked other than making sure nothing is force closing and the files are gone?

That's probably the best you can do.. if it boots, no FC's, audio still works, files gone, then you're probably good to go. I would offer to test it but I got no beats mod installed right now... Did you successfully remove it on yours?

not yet, there are a ton of files and I have to manually type out all the file names into the zip updater file, so it is taking forever, I'm getting close though. I will put it up in an hour or so, assuming it works.
What a pain in the arse. I installed beats, to my dismay, it hurt sound quality. The voodoo sound mod is much better. If you made a backup, I didn't, prior to install you are in good shape otherwise, full wipe and reinstall rom. It would be great if someone made an uninstall zip. Good luck!

my uninstall zip will be up in less than an hour, assuming I am not doing it completely wrong! It should work on the Atrix 2, but some files get replaced, not deleted. I think this should be fine, cross platform but you know the drill, not my problem if it does something bad and all that stuff.
getting status 0with the zip even though I wrote it in Ubuntu. any ideas

You send it off to farshad525hou? This is a good enough cause for a community effort... not to bash beats, but - we need options!
I guess that's what we get for having, ahem (excuse me), "unofficial" copies...

Well, here's half of your request (I don't have the Cmas.apk/odex until I get home later): https://dl.dropbox.com/u/61960599/AABSync.zip
I checked the sha1's with the OTA updater-script.. they should work fine.

Why not just use the 2.3.6 fxz. That really is prolly the safest and fastest way to get you to a "good" point for an OTA to ICS.

Thank you so very much!! Replacing these files didn't fix my problem unfortunately. Makes me curious if Verizon has different version of these or is there something else i need to be looking for as to the reason my settings > user dictionary keeps force closing when i try to use it.
You've been a big help, i was looking for days for those files. I changed the permissions on them as well in a attempt to stop the force closing. they are now set to read only and only user can write, just like the rest of the files in there. I don't know what STSystem.apk is but it has all permissions enabled.
Maybe I didn't break this by deleting those files and i just noticed it being broken now. I'll post here later about how I fixed it, if anyone seems curious. Thanks for the help!!!

We must check that all permits are in 644 to all files have been copied to the system folder, there should be no loose ends, all at 644, then at the end, you have to reboot into recovery mode and do the wipes, then restart again and wait for the phone to resume the system, double check that everything works and that's it, if not, with regard to whether the files are from another operator due to different bloatware may be true that you can fail again.

I appreciate the fast reply and extensive knowledge. I don't understand what a 644 is nor what to wipe. I'm still using stock ROM and unaltered as far as flashing or anything more than rooting. I used SDmaid to move the files back into system/app as well as changing permissions. I will look into what a 644 is along with information about rebooting into recover mode if need be.
I would rather steer clear of having to reset the phone to stock, though I've done it before when i had to return a phone for defective hardware and didn't want to leave obvious super user and root on it. I left the whole setup of the CD image etc on the computer. I just don't want to depend on backups to recover my different game progress among other things.
Sorry for pretty much hi-jacking this thread. I didn't think it would be this hard and go this far. Thank you everyone for your patients.

[App][Mod]Google Wallet Installer

Google Wallet Installer for Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, and US Cellular Samsung Galaxy S3.
Requires ROOT, an UNLOCKED BOOTLOADER, and BUSYBOX!(A deodexed ROM is just recommended)
My newest project, RemoteFlash, was just released! Take a look and give it a try!
Wallet Installer Is Now Available For Free To All Supported Carrier Models On XDA! (Donations Appreciated)
My application, "Wallet Installer", will install Google Wallet on almost any US based Samsung Galaxy S3. It simply edits your build.prop and then places the correct modifications into your system. It downloads all the files from my personal server, which is pretty quick. Just select the appropriate Rom type: AOSP, JB Touchwiz, or ICS TouchWiz, and then your carrier: Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, or US Cellular. I also added a restore option for your build.prop, so you can restore it after you setup Google Wallet. Hopefully this helps you out and makes the process easier!
Wallet Installer has been updated on the server side. The credit goes to Paul Obrien for the new version! To install it, simply reset Google Wallet, delete it, and then rerun Wallet Installer! Make sure to also have BusyBox installed/updated!
Please donate if my work helps you : )
V3: No Recovery/More Stable
And as always: I take no responsibility for bricked devices, whether a soft brick or a full on brand new coffee coaster.
Dude. You are awesome. I was just in the official wallet thread and was hesitant on going through with it because it seemed daunting having to change the build prop. I'm about to flash slim Bean 3.1 and then try this out. Will update this post once I finish trying it out . Hopefully all goes well!!!
Well I ended up lagging on the install but just wanna say thanks again because it worked perfectly. First try and not a single problem as of yet. Awesome!!
Glad to help! Hopefully all goes well! If the download stalls just give it a while, my server is a retired galaxy nexus hooked up to WiFi lol. My WiFi sucks sometimes.

Google Wallet Installer for Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 3's(d2vzw)
My application, "WalletInstaller", will install Google Wallet on any Verizon S3. It simply swaps out your build.prop with a modified one and then flashes an open recovery (TWRP 2), and in the open recovery flashes the latest version of Google Wallet along with the required NFC libs for your rom. It downloads all the files from my personal server, which can be somewhat slow, but I'll be upgrading soon. Hopefully there won't be any download issues. Just select the appropriate rom type: AOSP, JB Touchwiz, or ICS TouchWiz. Hopefully it helps you out and makes the process easier! It has been tested on my device, which is running CM10, but the other options haven't been tested, but they should work great. I will also hopefully make it to support all US carrier based S3's after the weekend is over.
My application will be in the market for 99 cents if you feel like supporting the cause(will post link once uploaded), or you can download it here for free. Please don't post links to my application without my personal consent. Thank you!

So I installed the app and set it all up just fine, in fact, I was about to test out wallet at a locat establishment but I noticed something was a little weird. I tried to change my wallpaper to a picture in my gallery. For some reason I got an error that "Not enough space. Delete photos, music, etc." Last time I checked I had plenty of space. I opened up setting and storage to find my device storage has a total of 4GB of space (with close to 2GB's of free space remaining). My S3 is a 16GB unit. Obviously things are a bit haywire. I'm running CleanROM 5.0 at the moment so I'm not sure if your app would conflict with that but things were fine prior to this. What do you think?
when i choose ics touchwiz install it loads terminal emulator and says rm failed for /system/build.prop no such file or directory
I'm not sure if my app would interfere quite like that. It shouldn't, but when messing with the build.prop and a custom ROM you can never be positive. If anything else odd happens, pm me and I'll look into it.

It's possible that your system didn't mount properly, or that your ROM is using some sort of mod that moved the build.prop, or it may have been removed or altered by another application.
Got mine installed and all looks good but same thing about the wallpaper..........says no space even though it has space.

Maybe it's just an issue with CleanRom. Still really weird though. I won't know til more people give it a shot. Anyways, let me know if wallet works! Thanks for trying it.

Same here, I can't access Internal Card........if not a fix soon, I will probably have to redo flash of ROM and just wait for better wallet. This worked too btw

Here's one question for you...
Why does your installation include TWRP 2.3.1.0.
I already had a CWM Recovery...that was strange to me.....when I get to work I am going to try to flash over that to see if that's the problem. Could be that. But right now I can't access my internal drive let alone the backups if I were to start over.......LOL.....I wouldn't be able to get to.
Live and Learn I guess.

I'm sorry that you're having trouble. I included TWRP because it uses an open, unencrypted script file to pass commands to recovery. CWM, from my understanding, requires an encrypted, not so universal script file called extended commands. Depending on what recovery someone was running, flashing a script would not work, or it would possibly brick their device. I wanted to make sure everything was done correctly.
Also... I will take a look at all my server side files today and the app. I can't make changes from where I am, since I don't have ftp setup and I'm out of town, but I can download them and see where I may have gone wrong. My best guess is the build.prop swap causing issues, if any of you have possible leads, post them here and I can attempt a fix later today or tomorrow.
BTW...Wallet worked like a charm in 7-11 and Whole Foods
Taking pictures is a little harder too...have to switch to external to save the pictures....the Camera 4.2 doesn't even allow you to switch to external card.
Would be a shame to scrap this working wallet for these issues

I'm getting ready to attempt a flash on CleanRom in a few minutes to see if that's the only ROM having issues. Hopefully you guys can stick this out until everything's working great ; )
I flashed wallet and libs using my app on CleanRom 5. I was able to replicate the same error as you guys posted. Also, I don't know if you guys checked, but in recovery it mounts the internal sdcard perfectly, so that tells me it may have something to do with CleanRom in specific. I'm going to flash through some stock touchwiz ROMs with Odin and see what results I get in that area. Hopefully it's just a ROM specific ordeal. Sorry for the long posts, just trying to keep you all updated!
