hi there,
all i want to do is uninstall bloatware from my phone - i dont need to run any custom roms or anything else.
will unlocking the bootloader be able to do that? do i have to root the phone as well?
and then do i have to use titanium backup to uninstall bloatware?
sorry for the noob question, a lot of threads say just to root to uninstall, but it seems like unlocking the bootloader would be easier?
thanks for your help
just root your phone,
then you can uninstall the app inside the ROM(System).
unlock is for the custom ROM.
ohh okay thanks a lot!
Once rooted you can use an app called titanium backup to delete bloatware system apps, or use a file manager such as es file manager or root explorer, if you are using a file manager go to system/app and find the app that you want to delete. Both methods work the same, but in my opinion I like file managers. Hope this helps

Agreed. Just root using Gingerbreak or similar method, I've used Titanium backup to remove several unneeded apps You also need root if you want to remove carrierIQ, which may require more complicated methods.

I've rooted my EVO using unrevoked... got wifi tethering working and backed up all my apps with Titanium... now I want to delete all those crappy OEM apps that Sprint installs by default and doesn't give you the option to uninstall.
Is there a way I can uninstall these with regular root or do I need to go through the NAND access?
Thx!
you can try uninstalling those apps using Titanium Backup; under the Backup/Restore tab, you can click on any app and it'll give you option to uninstall
Thx for the suggestion, but it didn't work... I tried 'Sprint Navigation' as an example and I was able to click uninstall within Titanium Backup but upon reboot, it's back in the apps list and within Advanced Task Killer as an app that is auto loaded on boot. WTF!
Note: I also seem to be having a problem with Titanium Backup where every time I reboot it says "Sorry i could not acquire root" so I have to go to "Problems?" and re-download the BusyBox thing... then it works fine???
Install root explorer, browse to /system/apps, enable R/W access, then delete all the apps you want.

Is root explorer free? All I see is a pay version... can I do it with cmd and adb? Any idea why Titanium Backup loses it's root access each time?

it's probably because you don't have full nandroid root
I have root access now via unrevoked. I downloaded Root Explorer how do I delete unwanted apps. I tried going to sys/apps and holding down the cityid app and then click delete but it does not delete. Am I doing something wrong?

apps in the /system can only be deleted in ADB until full NAND unlock is released by revolked, go to the general incredible section look for safe apps to remove thread and it will show you the way
FYI, I've had success with the 'Freeze' option in Titanium Backup to disable system apps on the Incredible.
As a side question, anyone know how exactly 'Freeze' works in Titanium Backup?
I rooted my phone using SuperoneClick for mac/linux, and it was very simple. It said my phone was rebooting and that my phone was rooted.
Now what do I do? What can I do with rooting? I don't see any difference on the mainscreen. What I did was went to look at my applications and realized I have "SuperUser" now.
When I click that, I have LOG, Apps, and settings, the only thing listed is settings. How can I remove certain bloatware that I don't need?
Get titanium backup so you can uninstall bloatware- if you pay $6 you can freeze the bloatware instead of removing it completely.
A program like Root Explorer can help you get rid of the bloatware as well. Just navigate to System/APP and delete what you don't want. Just be carefull not to delete the wrong software, I think there is a list in one of the threads here of what is safe to get rid of.
Yeah, just get an App manager that uses root access (I use Anttek App Manager). You can either freeze such apps or delete them entirely. You can also change CPU speed, and eventually upgrade to CM7 when it's released, and quite a few other things!
Before doing anything though, I'd recommend backup up your phone with Rom Manager.
Okay, so your steps should be this....
First download ROM manager to back up my system?
Then I download app manager so I can freeze/delete? Freezing might be safer for a newb like me.
that is what I did
I backed up the phone using ROM manager, but where can I find where that backup is to make sure I did it successfuly?
If you are thinking about getting into some serious tinkering, custom ROMs, Kernels, etc. You will probably want to use the NVFlash method to load in clockwork recovery. This method and a good backup of your system should help bail you out of the most circumstances.
Yes, but I'm not sure where to find the backup? I want to make sure the backup was successful. Please someone help
Backups will be found in the clockworkmod/backups folder. Check there to make sure u are doing it right and have a backup.
What can you do with root? As a beginner I would recommend you go slow:
1- Install interesting apps that require root: http://www.androidpolice.com/2010/07/13/8-great-apps-every-rooted-android-user-should-know-about/
2- Learn how to make and restore nandroid backups w/ Clockworkmod Recovery.
3- Freeze bloatware with Titanium Backup Pro.
4- Eventually get to flashing custom ROMs once we get some !
Backup should be on your external sd card in a folder called clockworkmod/backup

I backed it up, went to clockworkmod and my backup, but it doesn't say anything when I click it, neither does it show up in the manage and restore backup
bump, anyone?
try again?

why would you do this to your phone and have no idea what it does or how to take advantage of it?
that's like hotflashing a bios just because it sounds cool.
I'm new to it and want to freeze bloatware? And plus, I can google on how to do stuff and "take advantage" of it =) Thanks
And I just made a back-up and that one is not showing up, gave it a name and everything, would the best thing to do is to uninstall rom manager and install it?

that sound like an easy way to get in over your head
rofl, i still can't get even make a backup, i tried making the back-up twice, and it's showing me the first one, but when I go to manage/restore, it doesn't come up
Do u have an sdcard mounted? If not u need one.
can someone tell us if removing bloat thru root explorer will delete the whole app? Iv read that it does and that it doesnt and the apps still show? clarification on this would be appreciated.. thanks much!
I delete my apps using rootexplorer. I go through system/app and delete from there. Also you can use titanium backup and freeze your apps you don't want to use.

Click the Mount R/W button on the top so you can make changes.
I uninstalled them via titanium backup and they don't appear or run.

Can someone give us a list what all bloatware you can remove without damaging the software itself?
I use an app called Root App Remover, one click and they are gone, I recommend it.
App remover works great

Basically, you can use any application that can root uninstall. There's a dozen of them on the market.
As topic=) rooted it but can't find the way to remove.. thx

I use Root Uninstaller. You can also uninstall system apps (be really careful) through Titanium Backup and a number of other file managers with root access.
Thx ! =) tried and successed
I know your question has been answered, but, you can also freeze stock apps with TitaniumBackup in case you're hesitant in completely removing them.
