[Q] Drawsomething update needs SMS?! - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Themes and Apps

Any thoughts or ideas on why the Drawsomething app would need send and receive SMS's?
latest update changes permissions so the app can send and receive SMS's. Seems totally bogus to me.

I don't think it'd be a problem to us. I checked balance, played Drawsome, checked balance again, no cost was made.
And why it wants to send sms, i have no ideas.
Nokia 3310 -> Siemen Scorpion -> LG GL500 -> Nokia NGage -> Nokia 8850 -> Lenovo LP500 -> iPhone 2G 4Gb -> iPhone 2G 8Gb -> LG Optimus One P500 -> Dell Streak 5 -> Galaxy Note GT-N7000 -> ???

I've sent then an email asking why its needed.
Let's see how long out takes to reply, if they reply.

I've held off updating till this is explained why a game needs to intercept my sms messages and send them.
Wouldnt mind an answer to that either.

I sent an email requesting further information on this too. While also blasting them for not mentioning anything about it in their changelog. If you go read Zynga privacy policy, they data mine the **** out of you. I uninstalled this crap.

I feel ya. I'm happy I saw this thread krowing there are other people who saw those new permissions and was like, "WTF?"
If I had to guess tho Zynga does not give a **** and we will probably not get a reason or the removal of these new permissions.

"According to Forbes Magazine, Draw Something has been losing 5 million users a month since being bought by Zynga. Still, for the nearly ten million who still play the game, this latest update has got to be upsetting."

I installed LBE Privacy Guard (Free, but you need to be rooted), and blocked the SMS permission. SUCK IT ZYNGA!

Lbe requires deodexed Rom right? I'm on odexed
edit: nvm that's pdroid, the better alternative. Pair it with avast for firewall. Lbe has some privacy concerns where the app tries to send back private data to the dev. Oh well

I'm safe, got a text block on my account. Another plus for Google voice?

Just installed another update for this asp and the SMS permission seems to be gone now.

Stolen Nexus S

In July 2011, my Nexus S was stolen. I went to the police but they said they probably couldn't recover the device. So I just kinda let it go.
Well, a few weeks ago I found out the the phone was still connected to my Market account. This provides a bit of a security concern because I've got my credit card on my market account too, but they haven't bought anything. Just for fun, I decided to download and install Plan B to the phone, and within a few hours, I got four emails of the phone's location within 15 meters. Well, I didn't have time to bring that to the police, and that was eleven days ago. So I have a few questions:
1. I want to be able to get a more recent location because I'm afraid the police will say the location is too many days old. I know you can text "locate" or whatever to the phone but it's not my number anymore. (I know this because on my market account it says it's an AT&T phone whereas I'm on T-Mobile.)
2. Is there any way at all to remote remove the app and re install it?
3. Is there another app similar to Plan B that I can do the same thing?
4. Is there anything else I can do?
-Matthew
That really sucks. I know Lookout had an option on their site to collect the location through the internet, no phone number required. Don’t know if it's 100% sure, but it's worth a shot. Really hope you get your phone back. Good luck!

You should be able to login to your Google voice account and see which number it now forwards to. Assuming you had it on the phone and they did set it up. If not you can just text to your Google voice number and it should go through.
I don't have Voice to forward to any phone. :/ Darnit!
Hang on. You used Plan B, you got the location of your missing phone... and then did NOTHING?

Antivirus/Malware & Traffic Monitoring

I am newly registered to the XDA but I have followed for some time now. I have rooted a LG Optimus M as well my AT&T Galaxy S2 Skyrocket ( two separate devices...)
I recently switched to the :good::good::good::good:CM9 nightly builds:good::good::good:. Good so far in that realm minus a weird gallery issue.
My real question is what are people doing about antivirus/malware protection on a rooted phone? I have tried AVG and a couple of others, but the interface doesn't really show what it is doing. I also have a Macbook Pro and use Little Snitch for monitoring traffic going in and out. I can approve or deny traffic on a one time basis or forever. Is there also an app that would provide this type of functionality as traffic going out that I have not approved is generally my first clue that something might be going on.
This is my first post (N00bie) so I apologize if it is not formatted like some of you professional XDA members.
Thanks in advance.

Works, doesn't work, won't uninstall, blah blah blah.... I think I will see what others post about this issue and make the best informed decision I possibly can...

I agree, a lot of people are idiots on the play store. I am not saying it is a bad product, I am going to check out all responses to my posting and see what works best. I don't even mind paying for the app if it truly does what it says.
I was reading an article on my Flipbook (Google>>Don't get faked by Android antivirus apps<<) the other day that said a lot of the Android A/V apps miss a lot of malware. I know these apps can't catch every iteration but really??? 50%??? That is horrible...

This is the same report as the article I mentioned. Good, I am on the right track then...
I installed Dr.Web, but immediately presented with a purchase page. :crying:
I looked over the results of the test and settled on Lookout for now. It seems when I install any app, it will automatically scan that app for me... I like that approach. I may purchase it later... maybe...
I will let you know if I run into any problems with that one... I have to say if you don't have some sort of Antivirus, you may be asking for problems... Seems with rooting and modding that we are doing, you never REALLY know what someone has programmed into a mod or app. I still want something like Little Snitch that monitors all inbound/outbound traffic and lets me decide whether to allow/deny connections....
Would be a nice feature in my mind...

As long as you're not side loading apps and pay attention to the permissions that's all good.
You also have to not use open networks where they can poison and intercept your info. I stay off those and don't side load.

LBE privacy guard.
I've used it for a long while now. Clean, simple, and only presents me with a super user style allow/deny for permission requests. It let's you enable or disable internet connectivity for an app, but not specific requests to specific hosts like little snitch. Its great for other permissions too, locations, contact lists, etc.

What's the point of it? Does it have any advantages over other IM solutions (such as WhatsApp)?
I don't see any use of it. Atleast WhatsApp and Viber picks contact from our phone numbers. This seems useless. The UI looks quite appealing only.

See, I think we should leave them out in the dark, cold and alone; as a way to gently shame them into upgrading to a device that doesn't suck. =)
I got it to see what the fuss is about, but couldn't agree more with the other statements in this thread, in my opinion, it's too little too late, had it have been before the advent of whatsapp and the like, perhaps it may have been relevant. But now, a service like bbm holds no weight when there's already a few, well established multi-platform services that do the same thing.

Whatsapp plus temporary ban

Hello, i was previously using galaxy note 5 with android 7 and whatsapp plus was working fine. Now i switched to op 7 pro with android 9 and every time i try to use WA plus, it says that i am temporarily banned for 20-40 mins.
Any workarounds?
What the hell is WhatsApp Plus? There's just WhatsApp that I know of. The thing where you paid a dollar once a year ended like 3 or 4 years ago. Other than that, I have no idea why you would be banned. Maybe just uninstall and just install the normal WhatsApp from the play store
Those WhatsApp Plus apps are malware magnets.
I used one version of that app like 5 years ago. They banned my acc for 10 days
It was FB greed when thy bought the company didn't want 3rd party enhanced apps doing what they couldn't. But to make the story short, it doesn't have anything to do with the phone, may just be you unlucky.
Those who don't know what app is that, well, imagine that google decides to ban all YouTube Vanced users.,?
It was already in the media a couple of times that whatsapp has been banning users with non official app. You got unlucky i guess.

Careful, cause it can lead to permanent ban if you continue to push it.
