[Window N90] How to make your 3G USB modem work with your tablet - Miscellaneous Android Development

I recently bought Window N90 tablet and I´ve been trying to figure out how to make my 3G USB modem to work with it. I finally figured it out, so I want to share this solution with others who might want to do this.
Supported 3G modems for Window N90 are (according to specs): E1916, ZTE AC2736, HUAWEI E1750, HUAWEI EC122, HUAWEI EM770W
I have Huawei E1750, so I can only confirm that this guide works for E1750.
1) Install modem drivers/software on your PC
2) Download Hyper Terminal ( just google it, you can download it on few sites ) and unpack it somewhere
3) Run Hyper Terminal - as a name of new connection enter anything you want, click OK
4) In next window named "Connect" in its last column "Connect using" select "HUAWEI Mobile Connect - 3G Modem" and click OK.
5) In next window with a phone number and other parameters press Cancel
6) Now select File -> Properties -> tab Options -> click on button ASCII Options -> tick second box named "Show input characters on the screen." Click OK twice.
7) Type AT, if you get response OK, that means your modem is communicating.
8) Type AT^U2DIAG? and note the number you get as response in case you ever want to change the settings of modem back
9) Type AT^U2DIAG=0 and press enter. If you get response OK, you just set up your modem to be acting only as a modem, not a card reader/CD drive
Now you can connect your 3G modem to USB port of your tablet and use it to connect to internet.
If you ever want to change the behavior of your modem back to way it was, follow this guide from beginning, but instead of AT^U2DIAG=0 use AT^U2DIAG=xxx - where xxx is number you got from AT^U2DIAG? command.
Hope this helped someone

One more thing, you will need to disable SIM PIN request before you use your modem with your tablet. Here´s how to do it:
You have to disable the PIN on SIM card, either through Windows and some Connection suite for your modem or you can do it through Hyper Terminal:
1) lets figure out if SIM inserted in your modem is PIN locked, in Hyper Terminal type:
AT+CPIN?
- if PIN is active, you should get response "+CPIN: SIM PIN", if its not, you will get "+CPIN: READY"
2) to disable PIN lock of your SIM card, type:
AT+CPIN=1234 (where 1234 is your PIN code) - you should get "OK" in response, then type:
AT+CLCK="SC",0,"1234" (where 1234 is again your PIN code) - you should get "OK" in response
your SIM card should now have PIN code requests disabled.

Glad to help... in this monologue

Thank you! You saved my day

Glad to help just hit "thank you" button next time, so my profile wont look so useless

Hi Darkjesus,
I'm planning to buy Sony Tablet S, either the Wifi or Wifi+3g model. What I would like to know is whether the method you posted will work with it if I want to use a Data Card (EVDO) to connect to the internet on the go.
Thanks,
Ashish K.

Hi Ashishk2911,
I think you can find your answer here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1359364 - it seems that you will need to root your tablet in order to use 3G stick as modem.

Just an addition: Its not only for Window90 tablet, but for many Android tablets

now head back to you SD card again and select and copy the u2nl and paste it to the /system/bin/ directory. Now exit root explorer and restart your phone.
NOW YOUR DONE. YAYYYYYYY.....now have fun and tell me how it goes for you, so far for me its all good, web, mms, talk, text all work fine.
Nice tutorial!
The only thing I would say is I don't think you need to use Rom Manager with clockwork on the D2. I've heard other people who've installed Rom Manager with recovery and it screws up the Bootstrapped recovery. Everything you need to flash will go through boot strap so the only use for it on the D2 is just to download stuff.
Is this for Droid 2 or Droid 2 Global?
Anyone have any experience with Cricket? How are the data speeds and call reliability?
well in the city and where i live i get about good download speed, normal upload for low end carrier.
in the outta parts like the sticks i get 1x speeds but data none the less.
and No this is not for the Droid 2 global, that would seem like a sim card based phone. so im guessing its GSM which means it can be unlocked to work with any sim card base network
And ive done this flash about 13 times already and rom manger and bootstrap all seemed to play nice. i did flash the clockwork recovery before i install bootstrap just so i could get to the recovery menu.
Would this method work on a Droid Incredible?
Nice write up.Im hoping to do this sometime.
Not sure if it would work on the incredable since droids are made by moto and the increadable is htc

One question, after flashing to Cricket. How would you go by and updating the system? Cause i could imagine auto updating it would interfere with the flash..

well that would depend on your rom, most rom's faze out the auto update and ever needing it.
And then there's clockwork recovery that's flashed to the phone itself.
clockwork will never allow a carrier update it will always block it and ask you to reboot your phone.
so either way there's no auto updates going to happen, so i would say your safe from the auto update feature in the phone.
But if your rom doesn't have the auto update disabled, your going to get naged to death by it.
Oh i got you. And any Rom works with flashing over to Cricket?
-Thanks for replying quickly Lol[:

yup any rom will work, so you can install a rom and just try it out for a few hours before you even get to setting it up web and mms
but even if you install new roms, your talk and text will always work right out of the box with any rom since writing of the MDN and MIN numbers are in the phones main system or a kinda bios, so you can alway try before you keep. And sometimes you can set up more then one rom for full cricket settings and just switch between if you wanted to.

im not sure where the NV items are stored on the phone itself.
so your best bet would be to try to write in just the what your setting are suppose to be for your network and write them, and test it out.`
So I'm well on my way with this excellent walkthrough . . . But as a noob who has no current service on this Droid2 and no service with any other phone, what should I do to get cricket service going? Order the android plan by calling them, get the basics set up so that I can establish MIN & MDN, then go through the rest of the steps?

ok first off, yes you do need a cricket account. And No you dont need the android plan. I dont even think cricket will let you get a android plan without THEIR android phone. I tried this awhile back with a blackberry i flashed and wanted the blackberry plan and was told that they would be breaking the contract between them and RIM and could have there store something or other revoked from cricket if they allowed a flashed blackberry to get a blackberry plan instead of buying their phone new, with a new plan.
Soooo in turn i think if would be the same deal so you should just get the basic 40 plan like i have, i have full web,text,mms,email,...etc and all i pay is 46(with tax) a month
and im not sure if cricket will let you order over the phone. But in store they might work with you. Simply ask them to make you an account, pay for everything and then get your MIN and MDN numbers and do the NV items and all the other Settings with your numbers.
BUT this is if the stupid people in store(which almost have no idea other then how to pay your bill) will try to help you with.
MAKE SURE YOU STRESS TO THEM YOU ARE GOING TO FLASH THE PHONE YOURSELF AND THAT YOU FULLY UNDERSTAND THAT THEY ARE NOT HELD LIABLE FOR YOUR PHONE OR SERVICE NOT WORKING EVEN THOUGH YOU PAID FOR IT. (this is just the legal crap so they feel better)
Heh yeah I have already had one experience with the people in the store--I love how about two hours of reading random forum posts online with no structure to how I was getting my information basically gave me more knowledge than an entire store staff combined.
I have read that you can tell them you have an M6000 and get the android plan that way, but then obviously you can't bring the phone into the store with you. On the other hand, you're saying you have full web, i.e. evdo, even without the android plan? If so, makes more sense to me not to pay the $55.

[Q] How to Enable *#22745927(hidden menu) on GT-I9300 USB Data connection not working

Hello all, I am having a problems with the USB connection of my phone since 2 days. The Samsung Galaxy S3 GT-I9300. It suddenly won't charge (very rarely it does ) and I cannot connect to any computer via USB. You simply don't hear the USB sound, no device is detected. The funny thing though, when I go to download mode, the device is found instantly, and I can also flash the device with Odin, as I have done several times, trying to fix this problem. This suddenly happened two days ago, I didn't change anything, it simply stopped working from the one day to the next.
I have searched and read about this issue, and I found out about epic dialer codes.
this code is working : *#7284# (I had to flash to different firmware to get it to work though), i am now on this firmware:
GT-I9300_PHN_I9300XXALE8_I9300PHNALE4_I9300XXLE8.tar
The problem is, there should be a Qualcomm USB option, but it simply isn't there. I have read that many others have the same problem(no data connection and no charging) and they fixed it trough that setting. I also found that dialer code *#22745927 should enable this function, but this code is simply NOT working!
Also *#0808# doesn't work, I really want to use my USB data connection. I have 5 batteries and also a wall charger, so I am not worried about running out of power, and I am also sure it isn't a battery problem. I have 2 data cables, I can use them both to flash the device in Odin, when I connect the cable when the telephone is Off, I can see the battery for 10 seconds, but then it disappears and will not charge. (very rarely it does)
How can I enable the hidden menu and get to the qualcomm USB settings??? I also tried the app "Secret Codes Revealer" I have flashed Beanstalk, CM 10.2, in every firmware I cannot get the data connection to work. I am now trying different firmwares to get to those *#@! Qualcomm USB settings
Please help

Try this: *#22745927
*#22745927 doesn't work that's the problem I think
Apparently several people are having this issue, I will now try to flash verizon firmware to my vodafone device, to see if I can get that option to work, and afterwards flash it back to CM10.2
OK, I found out the following: the Galaxy s3 for US and Canada is a different model, the SCH-i535, and the qualcomm settings only apply for that phone, It's a little confusing, but the option apparently doesn't exist on GT-I9300 model.
That guide doesn't apply to you; the Qualcomm related stuff is only for the US and Canadian Galaxy S3 models; they have a COMPLETELY different chipset (Snapdragon S4 instead of Exynos Quad). Do not follow that guide.
*#0808# doesn't work... unable to get USB Settings Menu.
I faced the exact same problem. On my S3 GT-I9300, *#0808# was not working and I was unable to get the USB Settings Menu. Actually I needed to select "DM + MODEM + ADB" in USB settings. I achieve this goal using EFS Professional. I used EFS_Professional_2.1.73_Release. Just connect your phone to your computer, open EFS Professional, select tab "Samsung Tools" and select usb setting menu in drop down menu, the required menu will appear on your phone. This method is tested on 2 different S3 models where *#0808# was not working.... Hope this will help others.

i tried this method repeatedly with simcard form different countries (FR, ES, BE) wiyhout any problem
This ajusts :
Product Code: adjusted
Active CSC code: adjusted
CSC country: adjusted
Mobile operator: adjusted (but also read further for that matter)
As started from the OXM firmware (as written in the post) , the Bootloader -, PDA -, CSC -, and Baseband versions won't change
CHANGING THE SIMCARD LATER WITH ANOTER OXM_COUNTRY SIMCARD WILL ONLY AFFECT THE MOBILE OPERATOR (unless you use the full method of course).

Is it to much if I asked you to make a short fast video tutorial because I can't do it with these instructions ?
There's no way to pass to next screen from wifi connection screen with SIM-card removed because of FRP, this method might work only on a phone not associated with google account.
i couldnt get this to work on a dual sim phone, any idea what went wrong?

Hi,
In step 4 what do you mean by don't touch the phone until it closes ?
(mean close for shuting down) or (close : only stand-by screen while the phone is on)

Stuck on the screen 'Checking for Updates' after hard reset

Hello, I bought my Nokia 7 (6Gb ram and 64Gb memory) on Aliexpress. I was able to activate it at first. However I cannot activate it after hard reset by pressing volume+ button and power button, connected to usb cable. All screens I can see on my phone after hard reset are these:
1. Welcome (choose language and country)
2 Insert SIM card
3. Welcome to your TA-1041 (set up as new or move your data)
4. Allow Setup Wizard to access this device’s location
5. Get Connected (When I use WiFi and When I use cellular network)
6. Possible data charges (when I chose ‘Use cellular network for setup’)
7. Checking for Updates (When I use WiFi and When I use cellular network)
I cannot go over to the next step after the step 7. When I activated it first, I chose the option 'Don't use any network for setup' after the step No. 4. But now I do not see the option after reset. It is so incomprehensible to me. I keep seeing only the last screen ’Checking for Updates’. What should I do? Please help me.

I really do not see such an option anywhere in the initial setup. Could you elaborate more about the exact steps?
So... your phone is locked from FRP, I see. That's because the seller flashed seriously tampered OS on Nokia 7.
In that case, I strongly recommend you to unlock the bootloader and flash stock firmware by yourself.
To enter the OS: Do not insert SIM and skip the Wi-Fi. If you can't skip Wi-Fi, then your phone is locked from FRP, but I can still provide help.
You can find and repeat the guide to bypass FRP for Nokia phones on YouTube, which should be easy to repeat.

Sorry I quickly forgot the details after getting through the initial setup
From what I remember, after selecting language:
Select "Setup as new"
Do not connect to network and select "Don't use any network for setup"
It should then ask for username but just leave that blank.
passing with blank field
thanks 950505, i arrived to skip the "checking for updates" using the offline configuration but in effect the tip is to left blanck the field name.
now the phone seems to work correctly.
thanks again
some aliexpress sellers put malware on the phone, they get money for doing so, read the low star reviews.
better to flash original

Some might do malware. But what is happening with these Nokia 7 units is that. It does not have an official international firmware. The Chinese firmware only has Chinese & English language. So, they flash this unofficial firmware which receives no updates. So, the phone goes crazy checking for updates which it never finds

I too can't choose an option to skip Wi-Fi. Neither seem the bypass FRP guides to be of any help. They point to some trick in the Vision Settings involving TalkBack. Nothing of the sort is present in my Vision Settings.
Does anyone has any suggestions on how to get past setup wizard? Or for that matter to unlock the bootloader or flash the stock rom in some other way?

Okay, I've found a solution to this. It may even be easier than using the TalkBack method.
1. Start the device (into the setup wizard).
2. Take a screenshot and tap the 'share' icon.
3. Share with 'Add to Maps'.
4. Hit 'cancel' at the 'add account' pop-up.
5. Hit the back button on your phone and confirm 'yes' to discard this draft.
6. You will be in 'Google Maps'. Hit the three lines at the top left.
7. Go to 'settings' and choose 'Google location settings'.
8. Your are now in your settings menu and have many options.
(9.) I just copied an apex_launcher.apk to my sd card and opened it from 'Storage' > 'Internal shared storage' > 'Explore'
10. From there is followed this video guide: youtube dot com /watch?v=FAK21pNMZyc
Good luck!
I tried this method and run onto this problem.
1. Select "Setup as new"
2. I get a "Get connected" window and I have to connect to a network to continue setup - I don'y have "Don't use any network for setup".

Total Noob Question - OEM Greyed Out, Need OEM unlocked asap Pixel 3

Hello there and thank you for your patience, I had previously considered myself smart until yesterday. You see I'm new to all this, just a bb, but I find it fascinating.
So I sold my phone pixel 3 to someone who want to have lineageOS on google Fi and wants to make sure the OEM is unlocked. Phone has sim card slot
Not knowing anything I looked it up completed the steps to get developer options, OEM greyed out, ok so I proceed to look up articles and videos, finally found what seems to be a legit solution here
https://forum.xda-developers.com/pi...izon-pixel-t3796030/post83674835#post83674835
after downloading more software than I needed and making several attempts to access the adb command prompt on my macbook pro, I decided to borrow my friends pc to try and do it
Downloaded https://developer.android.com/studio/releases/platform-tools platform tools, unzipped, shift right click in folder, no command window option
I decided to after following the instructions on the phone, just hit the up volume key and power to turn it on, it says "no command" I'm guessing because I dont have the window up and cant seem to figure out how to get it up
Now I'm. back on my macbook pro and I'd like someone to please help me, preferably on macOS but I'll take any help I can and go back to my friends broken pc if I have to (touch screen broken and keyboard doesnt work, I got a keyboard, but the broken touch screen goes crazy and it's really frustrating.
Anyway sincere gratitude to anyone who can help me as I am desperate
Update: went back to pc unzipped platform tools, shift right clicked and there was an option for powershell window, however it did not recognize any adb commands :/

I know nothing about macbooks, but according to this article you have to change some system settings to open a terminal window.
https://www.groovypost.com/howto/op...nal-window-specific-folder-windows-mac-linux/
Can you open a terminal window in any folder? If so, just do a cd command to the platform-tools directory.
Regarding your powershell window, it sounds like you are not in the platform-tools directory. Do a dir command. Do you see the adb file? If so, try ./adb. If not, do a cd to the platform-tools directory.
Do you have a Verizon branded phone? If so, you probably cannot unlock the bootloader. The link you pointed to is for a Pixel, not a Pixel 3.
If your OEM button is grayed out you are done, you can't unlock that phone.
Hi All,
Apologies, this is my first post, I cracked something trivial, but didn't find the steps or the same situation anywhere, so posting my version of events. This guide is based on the following situation
Bought a Google Pixel 3 XL - CARRIER LOCKED phone off ebay (Locked to EE)
- Running Android 10 - working fine - pre wiped
- EE SIM installed
- Wifi Connected
- Based in the UK
- I need to root this phone to perform security testing
So, for me, because the phone is locked to EE, when I did tried to enable OEM unlocking in dev options, I got the dreaded OEM unlocking unavailable on carrier locked devices.....:
Details:
Enable DEVELOPER MODE
SETTINGS > ABOUT PHONE > Hit “Build Number“ 7 times > Enter your pin/pattern
Go To Enable OEM Unlocking
SETTINGS > SYETEM > ADVANCED > DEVELOPER OPTIONS > OEM UNLOCKING option
However,
You end up with “OEM unlocking unavailable on carrier locked devices” and the option greyed out and disabled (Silent sobbing in the corner by my wallet)(See attached my mocked up screen shot of this)OEM unlocking is step 2 of every rooting tutorial I’ve seen (the 1st being DEV OPTIONS!) (Silent sobbing in the corner by me!)
Reading many forums, all hope was lost, lots about Verizon phones, and specific IMIE numbers called out for versions to watch out for, blah blah until a passing comment about getting the Carrier (EE) to unlock.
EE do this for FREE if YOU bought the phone from THEM….or they charge £8.99 for 2nd hand phone unlocks
1) So, call EE on 150 (UK)
2) Give them the IMIE number of the phone
SETTINGS > ABOUT PHONE > IMEI number
3) They fill out a form and send to their back office “unlock team”
4a) Short Story – I called back and was advised to update my phone...the end
4b) Long Story - I was told this would take 24 hrs, and they would send me an email with instructions…this never arrived, so I called back, only to be told there was a back log and it would take 1-10 days!! 5 days later, no email, no codes, no love! so I called back begging for an escalation, I was told there was a note on the account saying it was done! and the phone just needed an update….(no code, no email, no call, if I was waiting at a restaurant for you EE, I'd of left!)
5) Next update Android to the very latest version
SETTINGS > SYSTEM > ADVANCED > SYSTEM UPDATES6) Wait the age for it to install and “optimize” the apps
7) I checked for more updates, found “A security patch”, went through the process again….7 more times! (took me a couple hours!)….I repeated this process until there were no more updates to collect (back to step 5 you go!)
8) Check:
SETTINGS > SYETEM > ADVANCED > DEVELOPER OPTIONS > OEM UNLOCKING option = still locked for me at this point.
9) Perform a FACTORY RESET
SETTINGS > SYSTEM > RESET OPTIONS > DELETE ALL DATA (FACTORY RESET)10) Let it Reboot
11) Re-set up
Enable DEVELOPER MODE...againSETTINGS > ABOUT PHONE > Hit “Build Number“ 7 times > Enter your pin/patternGo To Enable OEM Unlocking...againSETTINGS > SYETEM > ADVANCED > DEVELOPER OPTIONS > OEM UNLOCKING option
BOOM! OEM unlocked! (for me at least)
Long oand short of it - get EE to unlock and confirm > update the [email protected] out of the phone > perform factory reset
I hope these saves time for someone out there
