is there a way to transfer your google account/email? - General Questions and Answers

is there a way to change your email address?
i made this gmail a long time ago, i dont like the name i have.. i want to change it as im more grown up now. but ive paid for apps, and have my google+, and contacts, and youtube account all connected to my email address.. so is there a way to transfer it to a new account?
ill give Thanks to anyone who can help

You can't change the name of an existing account. What you can do is create a new account and link them together. Here's a link for more detailed instructions.

is there any way to transfer my paid apps from one email address to another?

Unfortunately, none that I'm aware of, with that accounts system however you can keep buying things from your old address while all emails are conducted through the linked one.

How about you go to the application forums.
If you're in the UK, just wait 24 hours:

GET IN !! - cheers for good news
Paid apps have arrived it seems...
Indeed they have! They're charged in dolllars though.. bit odd.
Oh FFS... great.
'Some applications can't be accessed using your account. Sign in with a googlemail.com account to use these applications'.
So I can't use my google apps account to buy things using the phone even though it works fine to buy things elsewhere, and have to create a completely different account just for the phone.. that'll screw up they synchronisation of my mail and calendar.
Or I can just not buy things. Their loss.
OK found a workaround.. it's messy, probably risky, but seems to work.
Log into your google account as normal. Create a gmail account. Now you have both a gmail account and your google apps account, with the same email addresses but different email stores, except the gmail account also has an @googlemail.com name.
In the gmail account, disable both pop and imap. This will make sure when you login with a client like firefox it picks up the apps account.
Now you need to setup a forward from gmail to google apps. You can't do this directly because gmail refuses, claiming it's forwarding to itself. To work around this, in the apps acount, create an alias to your primary email, eg. foo_alias. Now in the gmail account, tell it to forward all emails to [email protected] and delete the incoming emails.
SMTP *seems* to work automatically, going directly to the apps account, but the forward will take care of it if it doesn't.
Now you can login to the market to download paid apps, and the receipt will go to the googlemail.com account and be forwarded to your apps account.
I'm somewhat surprised this works.. Don't try if you're of a nervous disposition

Google Talk with transports

As far as I know/knew, Google Talk was incompatible with transports to other networks (MSN). However, I saw this post
http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Google+Mobile/thread?tid=73c73792d8500518&hl=en
Which implied to me that it actually was working. Can anyone confirm that it is, and possible give me some tips on how to set it up?
I use a free transport with mine.
use an app like Psi on the desktop, add your google talk account, do a service discovery, enter the server you want to use and attach the transport.
I use MSN and ICQ transports and it works well.
I've got it set up now, thanks! There seems to be a significant delay in contacts changing status (online/offline). I'm guessing that's normal though.
Also, is there a way to get contacts to show up by their MSN nickname, instead of their email address? Some seem to, while others are stuck as an email. Maybe it just takes time for them to change?
I am using an ICQ Transport which is working just fine, no delay (guess that depends on what transport you're using, i'm on headcounter.org ((they've got MSN too)))
You should change the addresses manually (on GTalk) i had to do so too with some of my ICQ contacts as the transport isn't exactly perfect.
I use transports to some IM networks specific for my country: Gadu-Gadu and Tlen. I use them for years and get little issues. It's really nice to have talk history from all networks in one place - accessible from WWW or mobile Gmail app.

I think Jabber doesn't store contacts names on server side - only their IDs. This is client responsibility to name IDs, so even if you name them in one Jabber client, second one won't know these names.
GTalk, on the other hand, uses Google Contacts to store names and other information. If you look into all your contacts, you will see these imported from other IMs, e.g. contact named "[email protected]" with email "[email protected]". Then you could change their names and this should affect names in GTalk app.
But this is somewhat screwed up. First: you get a lot of garbage in your contacts and you can't remove it, because then Gtalk will automatically remove Jabber contacts too. Ofc if you re-add Jabber contacts then Google Contacts will be automatically recreated.
Second: you probably want to merge IM information with already existing contacts. You could move all info from existing contacts to IM ones and then remove first ones, but this is totally stupid. Unfortunately if you will try to do it other way, then GTalk will remove your Jabber contacts ;-)
I have found a trick: you have to disable sync in your phone and modify contacts from Gmail interface. Move IM info to old contacts, remove garbage and then GTalk won't remove Jabber contacts during sync, because it will find them in other contacts.
But there is also some tricky thing. GTalk info must be stored in exactly the same way as in automatically created contacts. AFAIR it must be added as email field of private type. This is totally stupid, because Google Contacts API supports field especially for GTalk information and actually Android use it in some places, but GTalk syncing doesn't. If you add this information as GTalk field, then GTalk will remove Jabber contact or recreate garbage - I don't remember. I have added IM info in both email and GTalk fields to get full functionality.
Ahh and it's possible that Google fixed some of these issues. I was porting my contacts about year ago.

Sorry for the late reply, I sent in my N1 for a replacement, and haven't gotten the new one yet so I've been using my iPhone.
I used jabber.hot-chilli.net which gave me a bit of delay, then headcounter.org as it was recommended above. Headcounter didn't convert emails to nicknames like hot-chilli did (sometimes), so I switched back. Still looking for alternatives.
Edit: Actually, I remember there being a problem after I switched to headcounter.org, causing Talk to force close. Something with how the contact names are parsed, I saw in another thread.
does this work anymore for anyone?
I'm unable to get any services listed when I'm connected to GTalk.
Tested several transport servers but neither are returning any services.
If I connect to an other jabber server services are returned from the same transport servers..
Use Psi to add the transport. Set it up to connect to Google's servers and sign in. When you go to add the transport, manually put in another server. Use jabber.hot-chilli.net, they use an updated Jabber server that parses names correctly so they don't crash Google Talk.
You'll have to authorize each contact once the transport is added, but Google put in an authorization limit per day, so only 40 or so will go through. The rest you'll see with a little red question mark on their status icon. Right click on them and go to authorize and resend the authorization manually. This may take a couple of days depending on how many contacts you have. As they authorize you'll see them show up in Google Talk.
Also, you may want to add their IM address to your actual contacts. Open GMail and find a contact, add a Google Talk IM listing, and put in their_email\[email protected] When you're signed in on your phone you'll see their status next to their name in Messages, Phone, and Contacts. Its handy.
I wrote a blog post on it here: http://chrisbaltzer.com

[Q] switch apps, contacts, ect from google acounts?

so iv tried googlin this and never really got a clear answer. i could be asking the wrong question. i have a new gmail account that id like to use (just looks more professional) and id like to use it as my primary account for my i500. i know that i could just sync both and have the emails come in anyway but id like to just use it as junk mail account for facebook and those things and not have it on my phone. id like to just bring everything from one account to another..apps ,iv learned contacts, and whatever else i use on my phone.....mostly my app. thanks to any advice on this and im sorry if its poseted and im just slow today
Couple of easy ways I can think of off the top of my head to migrate contacts:
1. Export the contacts CSV from one gmail account and import to the other through the webmail interface.
2. Soocial with 2 gmail connections to replicate the contacts across.
As to the rest, I accidently the whole Android. But really I don't even... ;-) Please clarify exactly what you are looking for, and perhaps someone can give you a clear answer...
im sorry. im using and email account for my phone now. (email1) and i just made a new email id like to use it just like im using email1. so when i sign in with my new email it brings all my apps with it set cpu, root explorer, astro, ect...so i guess my real question how do i migrate apps? from one account to another
anyone at all? please if you know just point me in the right direction
I don't think that is possible cheif, but you could keep the old account as an 'App Drawer' of sorts. shut off gmail / contact sync / etc in Settings > Account Settings > Your Account. Then just leave it be.

New GMail Address

Hello everybody,
I am trying to figure out how to create a new GMail address to link all my stuff to, and I am having issues. My current google account is [email protected], and I do not want to use that address anymore as it seems childish to me. The problem is, I have purchased many apps using this google account, and I do not want to pay for all of these apps again. Basically, I just want a new address that I can send and receive emails from without losing apps. I don't really care what the login is. Can anybody help?
Well you can log into your phone with that account, and use the 2nd in gmail because that has the multiple accounts option.
Okay, that is good, I didn't think of that. I'll try it out. Thanks

Recover Amazon Credentials

So I have a few throwaway Gmail accounts and can't remember which one I used to sign up for Amazon Marketplace on my Android device. From within the app it will only tell me my name, not the email address that was used.
I can back the marketplace up with TB and restore after a full wipe and the credentials are also restored so I was wondering if anyone is aware of any way I can use sqlite to recover the user name or email address.
I can see the locker DB contents but it doesn't seem apparent where the credentials are stored, at least not to me.
Any help out there?
That's a lot of effort. Go to the Amazon.com web-page. Go to 'Sign In'. Then press on 'Forgot my password'. Keep entering your email addresses until it accepts one of them - bingo
Good plan except the computer that had my throw away Gmail addresses cached died and I have no other record of them. If I can't find the email address I'm stuffed. If I can then I will be sweet because I used the same password on all my throw away email accounts.
See my dilemma?

I'd suggest contacting Amazon and explaining your problem to them. With enough of your other personal details they should be able to supply to email address you used simply enough.
