think its fixable? - Samsung Galaxy S (4G Model)

I'm considering buying a gs 4g from an ad on craigslist. seller says he or a friend bricked it by flashing the wrong kernel or something and now it wont boot. from the ad "I tried to have my friend flash/root it, but he accidentally used the wrong program to flash my kernel, now it won't boot up"
Does this sound fixable? or is there no way to know for sure without having the device. He's selling for $75 obo, i think if i could get it for 50 it would be a good deal

I'm not extremely tech savvy but I'm sure it's fixable. We got plenty of helpful people here that are willing to take their time to help(i hope). Don't get me wrong but 50 bucks is a darn good price for this device. You should also consider asking about the physical condition of the phone. Best of luck if you decide to buy!

Ya, like he said, I think it will work for you, as I bricked my phone once (it even couldn't boot to download mode, googled around hopelessly and I just riskily tried odin (try to hold buttons to download mode) and magically, odin still recognized it and then, with 2 times one-click KJ6 (to have bootloader), it was on (I think you just keep patient and w a little hope and carefulness, everything will be ok )

Yep. Same as above for me. It didn't even look like my phone was booting into download mode, the screen was just black. I tried over and over with my phone plugged in, and odin finally detected it and I was able to fix it.

I'd go for it. This device seams to be pretty hard to permanent brick. Odin seems to save me from any issues.

Even if it's hard bricked it would be worth it... JTAG repair runs around $40 to $50 dollars or you can do what I did and perform the unbrickable mod...

[Q] Hard bricked my Skyrocket

Hey guys,
As the title suggests, I hard bricked my phone. I was flashing the Sky Ice Cream ROM and its associated update in CWM, and then I flashed the Sky Kernel by faux immediately after. When I went to reset the phone, it never turned back on. I tried all the combinations of button pressing and taking out the microsd card, sim card, and battery while plugging it into the computer. Nothing worked so far. I was wondering if you guys had any more suggestions before I go down to the AT&T store so I can try to exchange it.
On a related note, would a USB jig get the phone into download mode?
Damn. So pulling the battery doesn't do anything. And nothing happens when you plug USB into wall charger or computer? A USB jig may be your only hope. I guess just for giggles you could plug into computer and just see if Odin will recognise the phone but I seriously doubt it.

I really don't know if this will help, but when I rooted my phone, for some reason I could only get it into down load by holding ONLY the volume DOWN & power... it can't get worse than it is now. Give it a try.
Sent from my SGH-I727R using xda premium
If you really are hard bricked a jig won't get you into download mode. And if the key combo+insert USB isn't working then a jig isn't likely to work either.
But hey, might as well try. Make your own though, it's really easy. All you need are three 100k ohm resistors (cost = $.75), some electrical tape, and a micro usb cable you can cut up (some people claim to be able to do it without cutting up a cable but I couldn't make it work).
I hard bricked not too long ago, so I know how much it sucks. Good luck!
I just hard bricked my skyrocket

I was doing soft bricks left and right. It took simply one more flash to turn it into a hard brick. I didn't it out of sequence and i did it with goo.manager. I think one should stay away from automatic flashs. Do these things one step at a time. I think it flashed the particion and that's why it's hard brick.
But i don't understand, why can't i get any response from the phone, not even a vibrate etc.

I had the same issue. I pulled the battery out when it was in download mode. [Didn't odin or flash or anything] The phone would not turn back on. It showed in device manager as qhusb_dload or something. After a lot of research and trying everything I could, I sent it to mobiletechvideos and he was able to get it working again with a jtag. Had to suffer with an old iPhone for a week but got my skyrocket back and was flashed stock. The phone hard bricked on me again flashing a rom a couple days later. I ended up buying a broken skyrocket and swapping out the mainboard and has worked great ever since.
From my understanding [ and I could be wrong] but just flashing a rom through recovery won't hard brick your phone because I don't believe it touches the boot area. I believe my issues were from some sort of hardware issue as opposed to software.

Skyrocket not booting

I must've done something wrong, or maybe its hardware related, but my skyrocket won't boot. If I hold volume up and down and power all at once, Samsung flickers on the screen, so I know it isn't completely dead. Can anyone help me maybe restore it? Or any suggestions? Many thanks...

USB jig did not work...oh well...
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
It happened to me on my new Skyrocket a few days ago- the phone just wouldn't turn on after charging overnight. I kept on trying - nothing. Checked battery - was showing full when plugged in, but still the phone wouldn't boot. I suspected it had something to do with the power button being too buried in. Finally I left it alone for a couple of hours...and then tried again calmly ...it turned on. Try some positive thinking..
positive thinking went out the window after the jig attempt... oh well, on eBay at auction for .99 cents to start...
Call the 800 number for AT&T's warranty department that's listed on your receipt. Have to jump through some hoops and answer some questions, but get angry and demand a replacement. They'll give you one.
I had experienced something similar just recently. I just took out the battery, made sure that the connectors were clean, and put the battery back then it worked again.
I seriously thought all this rooting and custom stuff finally caught up with me, but in the end, don't ignore the most simple solution.

Try going through the various methods to get into DL mode in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1069032
Obviously, Method 4 won't work for you, but you still have three others. If these methods don't work, see if Odin will recognize your phone (if you are on a PC). If this doesn't work, some people have reported success using a USB jig.
If none of these work - you may be SOL. Good luck.
Try using the +/- and insert USB cable approach or one of the approaches linked off that page.
Failing that, a Download jig might help

Plug USB cable *s/w upgrade should show up*
If you get there NV flasher should work as per instructions on it.

Help! Phone in loop rebooting

Hi guys,
I need your help, once again. This afternoon my phone fell on the ground, not from a big height, but it did. As I picked it up it was still working, but I couldn't pick up a phone call I was receiving, so I switched it off. Since then, it's in constant reboot. I tried to pull the battery, but as soon as I put it back in, the loop starts again, without even pushing the power button.
Unfortunately, when I pulled the battery I realized some had craved in, from a previous spill. Not much at all, in fact I was surprised to see it there, but as a fact there was.
I tried to access recovery mod, but with no success.
Thoughts?
Get into download mode and go back to stock.

No success. As soon as I pop the battery in it starts the loop, so basically I have no time to press volume and then plug the cable in.
If I plug the cable, press volume, and then pop battery in, it goes into a different "battery loop", but still loop.
I can't believe it got damaged for three drops of water...

Try this different method to get into download mode.
Take everything out of the phone (microSD, Battery, and SIM card).
Then hold both volume button up and down and THEN connect it to the cable.
Keep holding the volume buttons and then put the battery in.
It may be hard so you should flip to the back side of the phone and do tht. By doing tht, it will automatically go into download mode.
If that doesnt work it could be a battery problem or the phone is broken :/

use Odin to (IDK) inject root access with some other programs needed to use custom roms backups etc, also this is doe using a specific file as this is the part of the process where most phones are bricked?
So sorry but for those following this thread I have searched but IDK the best way to go as they change and i want the latest. As when i first rooted this phone I first tried Superoneclick as it was said to be so easy. Well SOC froze on step 3 i think and never finished once so i ended up doing it with Odin which is the way i did it with my SG3 (for some reason way easier to use maybe more devs??) So i am trying ti pimp my mothers phone LOL She is in her 60s but she knows what shes doing lol. Anyway she hated her phone and i told her all she had to do was root it and load a new ROM and your phone will look and act newer. (wanting to save mom money too) This is my situation.
If you read all that i am asking what Odin version i need or better where to get it. Same with the flash file. IDK if any ICS or JB rooted flash files are made or if its better to use stock 2.3.6 (i think) whichever way results in easiest upgrading and how it should be done. I thank you a lot. I am sorry for the thread hijack but i thought it would be better one post here instead another thread (i hope to have found it from you or on my own before that) like i said i search but i cant find i know its their i found it before so idk.
I do know to thank you again and sorry again for the hijack
