[Q] Samsung Nexus S: manually set the ISO value when taking pictures - Android Software/Hacking General [Developers Only]

I tried to find an alternative camera app which would allow me to manually set the ISO value however I wasn't successful. I came across Camera360 and Camera FV-5 which should support this. In case of FV-5 I really could change the ISO value but it had no effect at all, the camera was still automatically adjusting to the light, and Camera360 said that this feature wasn't supported by my phone which was rather disappointing. So do you think that there is something I could do about it? Maybe trying an alternative ROM with different camera driver?
I'm using rooted stock Android 4.0.4.
EDIT: I also tried HDR Camera app and surprisingly it worked as expected. As far as I know, HDR effect in this app is achieved by taking two (or more) pictures with different light sensitivity (ISO value) and combining them into final picture. So assuming I understand this correctly, it must be somehow possible to force ISO value to the camera and Camera360 or FV-5 just don't how to do that... So maybe I just have to find another app... any ideas?

[Q] 3rd party camera apps vs. stock

What's your experience on 3rd party camera apps such as Snap Camera, A better camera, Camera Zoom FX etc. in comparison to stock google cam app? Do they perform any better in point-and-shoot scenarios? Some of these apps recently got support for camera2 API on Nexus 5. Does that actually change anything except RAW support and 4k video recording?
I use "A Better Camera", and shoot in "Super" mode. I took several pictures with the google camera in various levels of light, on normal and HDR, and took the same with A Better Camera using normal, HDR, and Super. Super looks hands down the best. When zooming the pictures in all of the way, you can easily see that A Better Camera's pictures taken as Super contain the most detail and most accurate colors. A Better Camera's HDR also beats the stock camera HDR in detail. For low light A Better Camera destroys the Google Camera.
Edit: Also, A Better Camera focuses better than the stock camera, and doesn't need to refocus every several seconds.
I do not use any post processing.

Just have it a shot and your right!! Thanks for the suggestion!
Sent from my Nexus 7 using XDA Free mobile app
I installed it and it certainly takes a better picture, but I cannot find any "super" setting.
Where is the super setting?
You need premium
Also, do I need premium for it to zoom? I can't get it to zoom like the regular camera does.
You shouldn't need premium for the Super setting. Tap the circle at bottom right to get shooting mode settings, and Super should be the tile in the middle. For zoom, swipe down from the top to get the settings menu, tap More settings (at bottom), tap Viewfinder settings, tap More, and make sure Show zoom control is checked. Then, when you go back to the main (picture-taking) screen, swipe from left to right to bring the zoom slider out.
Thank you for the clear explanations.
I found the zoom control hidden on left. I had been trying to zoom using 2 finger stretch like in other apps but didn't work here.
But super is not there. I purchased the app but as you see in the screenshot there is no super.....
Odd... yours has Night where mine has Super (2nd screenshot). Super was there for me in the free version too.
Well, at least I'm not going blind.
I have the latest version. Just purchased it.
I thought I edited my post to say I'd figured it out, but something didn't save... anyway, if you are running Lollipop, pull down your settings menu, tap More settings, tap General Settings, tap More, then make sure Use Camera2 Interface is checked. Then you will have the Super option available. (If you're still running KitKat, that won't work since KK doesn't use the Camera2 interface.)
Thank you.
I'm still on kitkat. So no super mode. ?

I use the stock app for videos, OpenCamera for stills, Freedcam for landscapes using RAW mode , and Google Camera - if I want panorama or photo-sphere.
'A Better Camera' - will save to SD card. It is pretty nice - but I uninstalled it after I realized that the free version had a limitation of number of HDRs pictures it allows.

Using stock, OpenCamera, A BetterCamera. I like OpenCamera except it doesn't yet support writing to external SD.
My main complaint with the stock camera is that it seems to only support two resolution settings (and I am guessing they are the really the same resolution, just one is cropped to make 16:9 aspect ratio). Am I missing something? Is there a way to take lower-resolution photos (e.g. for web posting or faster email upload) using the stock camera app?
I use Camera FV-5.

Does it allow saving to the external sd on lollipop? As far as I know only the stock camera allows that.
Camera FV-5 I found does not work for some reason on the Idol. I start the camera and get a black screen. I do get the settings but nothing else but a black screen. I going to contact app developer soon about it.
The best camera so far (for any device) it's procapture because: it can silent all the sounds (except those in whats app), it can put the grip on and it can capture just by touch. Besides theese, there are many-many other settings as wb, iso, hdr, light mode etc

Your phone has to support Google's Camera2 API in order for the app to even function. Right now only a few devices even support the official Google Camera2 API. The ones I know of are: Nexus 6, Samsung Galaxy Note 4, Samsung Galaxy S6, LG G4. Since the camera hardware is the same as my Nexus 6, I'd expect this app to just work, but Alcatel's software side probably isn't even written with Camera2 API in mind.

5.1.1 users - how are your Camera2 API RAWs/JPGs?

I recently made the jump to 5.1.1 (XXU2BOGG) to be able to use the new Camera2 API and play around with RAW files (.dng’s here).
Thing is, when I shoot pics with a Camera2-enabled app (Camera FV-5 or Snap Camera HDR (which can even toggle API modes), the JPG’s it makes (besides the DNG’s) are unsharp. It’s very visible compared to when you shoot the same thing with a non-Camera2 API camera app. I wonder if it’s the same for others.
Here’s how you can check.
Shoot a pic with a Camera2 API enabled app such as Camera FV-5, with RAW/DNG support enabled.
Shoot a pic with a non-Camera2 API enabled app, such as Google Camera.
Compare the resulting JPG files (not the .dng)
For me, the latter is way sharper.
My theories of the cause:
Bad Camera2 API implementation by Samsung.
XXU2BOGG firmware is in XtreStoLite ROM (2.2.1 RC3), that makes my S6 say it's an S6 Edge. Maybe a driver issue. It's properly recognised as an SM-G920F, so I guess this is not a possible issue.
Complication of 5.0.2 ENG bootloader with 5.1.1 ROM. It's caused the fingerprint sensor to be broken, maybe it also breaks camera stuff.

It's normal but I know some guys have been asked why in that S6 Camera thread in the general section. I've played around with Snap and FV5 after up to 5.1.1 too. When you enabled API2, their JPG/PNG output will set the sharpen level to zero and indeed it is the original quality from your tiny sensor(we finally know how crap of 1/2.6" without post-processing).
I use Photoshop CS6 plus Adobe DNG Converter 9.1(I think Lightroom plus Adobe DNG Converter 9.1 does the same thing), they can read out the S6 RAW correctly though S6 isn't on the supported device list. After I turned the Sharpening amount to around 100 and denoise set to like 30, the photo quality is very similar to stock S6 camera now with good sharpness and no noise.
The stock camera(or other 3rd apps) default does a heavy job on sharp/denoise but if you ask for API2 and decided to shoot RAW, it's your turn now to do the adjustment by yourself.

This makes sense, thank you, very good reply. So that basically means you have to choose between RAW and JPG, because the JPG won't be processed properly and thus be worse than the non-Camera2 API JPG.
Do you also see constant over-exposure 'flashes' when the light meter does it's thing? It happens with Snap Camera HDR and Open Camera (free Camera2 API app (that doesn't save photos when in that mode here)) as well.

Yes, I'm sure snap/fv5 will ignore the JPG/PNG sharpen filter when you take RAW and it is very weird. Indeed, we should report it to the developer, I think it is a bug. Because of that you have to choose between RAW and JPG/PNG now, not the combination of both.
I didn't test to disable API2 in snap/fv5 because if I don't shoot RAW, I will just use the stock camera. Just import the RAW in CS6/LR + DNG converter, set the sharpen amount to 80 ~ 110 and denosie 30 ~ 60, the result is pretty much same with stock camera now. So, no worry your API2 is normal.
Can you explain it a bit more about over-exposure flashes?

Yes, RAW isn't easy to deal with, every photo does need different set of parameters and very time consuming to find out best values. In some manner, RAW is only for real photo taker and professional. Stock camera or google camera on the other hands they do a smart job to optimize all photo automatically.
In your example, I don't see it over-exposure. It is just how the stock/google cam tweaked that for you. You can tune the exposure or any color in the DNG converter to achieve the same result but again it is a time wasting work.
And I would like to mention the DNG convertor default set at 25 sharpen(default 0 denoise) so it actually got some kinds of processing, so the ^Camera FV-5 .DNG is much sharper than ^Camera FV-5 .JPG. It looks like you are total new to RAW, I beat you understand how hard of it and time to lesson. Welcome to the Hell. lol

Exactly. I'll contact their support again (but so far they haven't responded to previous e-mails). Made a post on Snap's Google+ page and updated my post in the Snap Camera HDR topic too (because Snap's JPG next to a DNG is the same unprocessed, fuzzy one).

Yeah. FV-5 doesn't have it, but Snap Camera HDR and Open Camera have it when using Camera2 API mode. In Auto Focus mode, all is well. But as soon as I manually focus by touching on the screen, you see it overexposing a few seconds after the focus was grabbed (Snap Camera HDR) or on the exact moment of manually focusing by touching (Open Camera). The photo taken is not overexposed.
Curious about three things:
1) is this S6 specific?
2) is this a XXU2BOGG bug? /edit: could be, but it's the same on XXU2COH2.
3) what would Manual Camera do? (Tempted to spend yet another few dollars to test that one out) /edit: bought and refunded: it doesn't 'see' the Camera2 API and it won't shoot in 16:9, just 4:3. o_o

I'm not new to RAW, I shoot RAW on my dSLR (Nikon had .NEF's) and I love getting the most out of my photos. It can be very complex yeah, and I agree that every photo ideally needs his own post processing settings.
Nice that you know quite a bit about it as well and have done tests. Let's hope we'll find the ultimate culprit and things will be fixed.

In FV5 you can't real disable API2(I can't find the option) but just tested to disable API2 in SnapCamera and after that the JPG sharpness comes back. Yup, it will over exposure a sec when you touch the manual focus bcoz it will bump up the iso to real high(you can notice the real-time iso info getting high) but it is just a minor bug.
It is interesting to see what will happen on Note5/S6e+, they comes with the ability to shoot RAW+JPG in stock camera.

Camera2 api app's always freeze
Hello, I had not seen any complaint at all, so i really wonder if no one cares or it really only happens on my phone. The problem is no matter which app I use, the screen always freezes on the s6 after taking about 8 to 9 raw pictures in a row. Does anyone experience it as well? Thanks.
I have had similar issues. Raw images are big. I think it's bogging down while writing to the SD card. Probably, it's the reason Samsung hasn't integrated raw into the stock camera.

Ok... So it's not just me... Thank you for confirming.
I know the note 5 can handle the raw pictures well. Even the LG G4 has much slower internal storage. I do not own a G4 but I'm assuming the G4's stock camera is handling it well too. I believe it's bad implementation by Samsung, as it happens to all camera apps. And it's always the 9th raw picture screwing it. If Samsung is not trying to make this raw feature exclusive on the note 5, I'm sure they know how to make it work flawlessly on the s6 but they just don't want to.
In fairness, it really is a niche feature. Probably an extremely small percentage of S6 owners even know what raw is and an even smaller percentage would ever really use it. They probably figured they were fine not prepping for it. Now the external sd card and removal battery...

True it's a niche feature. But I would think that smaller percentage of s6 users who want to shoot raw is actually more people than the total number of note 5, edge+ and G4 users who can currently shoot stable raw. Given that the hardware of the s6 and note 5 should be very similar. It should not really be a hard implementation from Samsung. I will probably go back to nexus when the next one is out and never return to Samsung again.

Well, I guess if ya feel that strongly about it, it's the thing to do! Personally, I have never used a camera on a phone that performed this well, so I have no need to mess with raw and don't miss it. I was curious mostly, but Raw files are a lot of work to edit, so I won't bother.
Same here with Snap Camera or FV-5. Shooting passed 5 times may starting to have problem(need to kill the app to make it works again) while sometimes no problem up to 7 ~ 9 RAW. Not sure bad API2 implementation or 3rd apps not working good. Wish Samsung gives us stock RAW later or someone port it from Note5/S6e+.
I don't know what be can use at 5.1.1 (But I know that's can be use at Camera2 API at 10s - 1/8000s) but I will be does known' that's 6.0.1 as Marshmallow it's will be have in "OOTB" (On-Out-The-Box): Full-Pro Mode (as Shutter Speed/RAW - Pretty same options as 5.1.1 will have of Note 5/S6 Edge Plus Models)

A Guide for Better Photography [How to use manual mode][camera api2 pros]

It is boring to always use the auto mode in camera so let's try the manual mode and have greater quality pictures, which is better than auto mode.
What is manual mode ?
Manual mode is one of the main settings on your camera, and it lets you manually control shutter speed, white balance, manual focus, and ISO in most. These three settings work together to control the how bright or dark your photo is (known as exposure), as well as change the overall look of the image.
What is ISO ?
In photography ISO measures the sensitivity of the image sensor. The same principles apply as in film photography – the lower the number the less sensitive your camera is to light and the finer the grain. Higher ISO settings are generally used in darker situations to get faster shutter speeds.
What is Shutter Speed ?
In photography, shutter speed or exposure time is the length of time when the film or digital sensor inside the camera is exposed to light, also when a camera's shutter is open when taking a photograph. The amount of light that reaches the film or image sensor is proportional to the exposure time.
What is White balancing ?
White balancing is a process in which a camera will attempt to detect the type of white light largely visible in different environments. This is typically utilized to account for different light sources (fluorescent, incandescent, etc.), as well as different weather types and times of day (overcast, sunny, sunset, etc.). White balance generally focuses on collecting the proper temperature of white light in a scene, which ranges from cold (blue-tinted) to warm (orange or gold-tinted).
This is one setting that is often best left on automatic settings, unless the viewfinder suggests that the automatic white balance is obviously wrong. Of note, RAW images will have to be manually white balanced in post-processing, as RAW shooting will not modify the white balance in-camera.
What is Manual Focus ?
Manual focus controls are a more recent and much-appreciated addition to the control suite of manual smartphone photographers. Most camera apps features a simple and intuitive circular slider which can be used to accurately set focus manually in lieu of the jumpier and imperfect auto-focus, something which is often exaggerated when trying to take photos of close subjects. If you want to take a closer pic of something very near try macro focus.
What is Manual exposure ?
manual exposure is a small supplement to ISO and shutter speed settings, and it is one of the rarer manual settings one will find in smartphone camera applications. If a combination of shutter speed and ISO produce an unsatisfying image, manual exposure is often offered as a way of tweaking the brightness of an image in-camera. It can quite easily be replaced by simply modifying brightness after taking the photo, but it can sometimes be more efficient to get the image right the first time.

With camera api2 raw fails as it is not supported in P2 right now. But without camera api2 or with Hal1 enabled you can capture raw image in DNG format.

Open Camera now allows P20 PRO to record video using all lenses

Hi all, you might know this already but I just found out and it seems like absolutely great news for this phone. The latest Open Camera update allows you to record video using every camera on the phone. Even the monochrome one works. No need to have perfect lighting conditions in order for the camera to switch between main and telephoto. You now have a dedicated camera button which lets you select what lens to use. Did you get the chance to try it out? I didn't have any issues yet.

Is the recording quality improved?
I'm not sure. You do have to option to record with maximum 80Mbps but I I find it hard to tell if that is any different from the 30Mbps standard rate. Video looks crisp and clear, colors are very good, especially if you lock the white balance.
Quality seems not as good.. Also can not use Camera API 2, for high res to get extra control in manual mode.
I'm not sure why you can't use camera2 api. For me it works and I can select iso and exposure during filming. I have a CLT L29.

whats your max resolution for recording video using Camera2 API?
For the 40mp lens and the telephoto lens, I have 3840x2160. The monochrome camera however has a resolution of 3264x1840 for video.
Sorry for necropost, but anyone tried open camera for B&W photos? Does it allow exposure bracketing? Raw or at least png for file saving? I would like to try p20 pro just for that monochrome lens...
You can save RAW with the B&W camera but for some reason the pictures appear purple.
