Hi,
I have seen this tweak/app to wake phone by using volume button mentioned a few times but no instructions on how set it. Any information that can be shared on how to do this?
Thanks,
Chris
that would be a nice option to have. sometimes the phone feels "too tall" to reach the power button and pressing the side button while it lays on a table is much easier too.
Also looking for this mod - the Sense ROM forum mentions that it is something to do with android.policy.jar?
Leedroid ROM has this.
I know this is a late reply but I found that the tap tap app works well.
I combined it with no lock, so i can just wave my hand and it'll go right to home screen, bypassing the need to use power button, moving the htc ring and pattern lock.

I would highly recommend avoiding this app. I installed, played with for a few minutes then put in my pocket for the drive home from work. When I got home, my phone was locked up, too hot to hold and upon reboot, I had no data connection. Literally nothing I tried returned my data until I did a full wipe and nandroid restore losing a week of data. The app didn't even work reliably in the first place...maybe 1/3 times would it unlock as promised.

Ok, I'll experiment it later with my jeans. Do you remember the settings for your sensor? (sensitivity, how long will sensor be on). Can you suggest an alternative to wake up the phone w/o using power button?
Some say no lock can wake phones via volume key but that doesn't work on my one s.
Brief instructions
It's quite easy actually. Here is a very brief overview.
1. Unlock the bootloader
2. Install a recovery
3. Install something like SuperSu
4. In /system/usr/keylayout/keypad_8960.kl, replace the "key 114 .... " line with "key 114 POWER WAKE". Voila! Now it works, but not when it goes to deep sleep to fix that
5. do this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2038726.
If you need a more detailed answer or encounter some difficulties, don't hesitate to ask.

Hey, sorry for the late reply. Indeed, a button won't fulfil 2 purposes at the same time. What I do when I want to lower the volume is press the volume_up button. At this point a scroll bar appears on the screen. I then lower the volume by sliding the bar

Folks, any idea how to switch off the screen / lock the keyboard without the need of double press the red power button?
This is kind of bothering cause when you're in a application and need quickly to put your Treo into your pocket, you need to press 1st to get to the home-screen and 2nd to switch off.
Yeah, seems to be something new with the 750 (no other treo before did this). Palm set this up purposely, so I wouldn't assume there's a workaround for it. You'll get used to double clicking
Not that I know
I have used it for ages and found many shortcuts but no "quick lock".
Sorry
How about getting an application that device locks your phone upon return from standby? I use BatteryStatus Today Plugin by Chi Tai Dang.. This plugin has the option to lock device on wakeup and set cpu speed(I use this a lot)..
But mine's a wizard, what do I know about Treo.. but what I do now is, press the power button to get the phone to go into standby and when I want to use it again, I press the power button and it will device lock upon wake up.
I don't have a Treo. How do you initiate said keyboard lock normally?

"Device lock" that you may know of isn't used on Treo's. Palm uses their own "keyguard," which uses the red END button as a power button when not on the phone. If you are on the today screen, one click will shut the device off. However, if you are in another program, the first tap brings you to the today screen, and the second click turns the screen off (and the keyguard on if you have selected it to be that way). On all other treo's, WM or POS, one click of the end button would shut the screen off (unless you were on the phone obviously, it would be the END function), regardless of what program you were in. Palm changed this, I assume, to be like most cell phones, where when you press the END key it returns to the home screen, regardless of what you were doing. Like a RAZR would do.
Thats the best way I can explain it. You would be surprised Vijay on how many customizations Palm made to the OS.
Yes, I've heard that they did - thank Goodness one of the OEMs finally saw fit to do something original.
Hmm.. from what you describe, clicking twice doesn't seem like a very big chore... I did something similar in VJOkButt. Is it really necessary to convert the 2 clicks to 1 click? Investigating it barely seems worth the effort
V
I agree, hence my original post.
When you are on the today screen, it works normally. And you can double-click quite rapidly and it will work. Not a big deal for me.
yes guys, its not that dramatical, but still, it would be an improvement also considering that I want to stay in that one application (a note which I'm editing) and want to get there after waking up the device again without the need of again starting application, look for the last note, opening etc...
with HTC hermes and others the power button works exactly like this and its even better.
Hi all,
If you're using it two handed hold option (the white key, left hand end of row 3) and press the red button once - closes the app and powers off.
But you need an odd-shaped hand to do that one handed!
It is not that the double click isn't easy to do, it's waht fire00 said; if you are in an app, it closes it and then powers off. Case in point, this weekend while driving to a friend's house, I had directions in my email and would have liked to have turned off the phone, but then I would have to find the email again and open it up. On my Wizard, i would just turn it off and then back on and the email would be there for me.
Gotta be a reg hack for someone to find.

On my device, that method doesn't close the app. It just locks the keyboard and then powers off. When I power on again, the app is still running and on screen. I think that's what fire00 was looking for.

Sorry PJC ACE, my mis-type - using option + red button powers the device off WITHOUT closing the app - just like the power button on the Wizard ;-)
My apologies!

Option (hold)+Red Phone button is a nice alternative, but I'd really like to find a way to prevent the Red Phone from reverting to the Today screen, so I can power off directly with it with one press...Vodafone's excuse for specifically asking for it this way (every other phone's "End" button brings you back to the "home" screen) is ridiculous, these aren't like every other phone.
I installed HTC home plugin and now my red button wont let me go into standby. I uninstalled and still not working. Any ideas?
Side Button + Suspend
There is a thread at TreoCentral that explaines how to activate the side button and make it available for button assignment in the settings screen.
Second there is a small program called suspend.
I have mapped the 1 press of the side button to suspend and away we go.
1 - Click keyguards/screen off.
Also it resume in the place or program you left when you unlock it.

As it is tweaked right now, pressing the rigth button is shutting the screen down, yet not locking the device, which is v. convenient.
However, sometimes I need to lock it, which right now is only accesible via start --> lock. So, what I am looking for is a way to lock the devide by pressing the right button twice (e.g. once only shuts it down, two locks it).
Can you help me?
If you leave it with the screen off for a while, it automatically locks..

It sounds like you've got the known issue where the end-call button does not lock the device.
It SHOULD do that - there's a fault that stops it happening.
After doing Start, Lock, the lock button will then lock the screen, as well as turning it off.
If it doesn't then I suggest you have some software on your phone that has altered what the button does.
Use AEBPlus - keyboard remap program - it's free.
For every one button you can assign action for single, double, triple and long keypresses.
In your case assign "Lock" for double press on red phone button.
I hope that this can help you.

Yeah I'm pretty sure it was some of BsB Tweaks' tweaks, dunno which tho, however I find it quite useful as it is. Will check out AEBplus, thx.
Basically, im sure others would like this too, i want to be able to unlock the screen without having to reach up on top of the phone. I previously had the HTC Hero and i found out the trick to unlock the phone by hitting menu twice. Would someone be able to configure an app that changes the way the phone unlocks. ps i saw something with the ringer keys, im not really too fond of it. Thanks
Even the Volume keys would be much better than the power button. The menu button as you mentioned would be even better. The power button to unlock when you have a hard case on is stressful lol. I cuss'd it every time i had to use it. I use No lock now which disables the lock screen and allows the volume keys to wake it. Even using the volume keys can get annoying though. No lock screen at all is the downside (to some), so no cool sense weather animations when you wake it. Having the actual lock screen appear after waking with volume (instead of power) would be teh shiznit, Menu buttons would be even better, A rapid shaking of the phone to display the Lock screen would be my favorite though!
yeah the ringer key one is out somewhere but i want something different. Anyone up to it or trying to ATM
waking up by touching the screen would be nice too. maybe a gesture of some sort could be an option.
I'm pretty sure we can't use the touch buttons to unlock the screen as they only function when the screen is on, so an app that allows that would prolly kill the battery 10fold because it would need the screen to remain semi on.
Only other options are the volume keys, those are right there by the power button...soo yeah.
I could be wrong, who knows.
NM..........
download "no lock" from the market. it enables the volume rocker to unlock the evo. it also bypasses the slide to unlock button as well. goes right onto the homescreen. whenever i need my phone, password secured, i just use the widget to turn it off. reverts back to normal. this should be exactly what you are looking for. free app.

Via EVO on XDA app...
So I came across this in the EVO 3D forums. How hard do you think it will be to port this to our device?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1346760
It is in development already. See bricked kernel thread for more info.
Sent from my Sensation
Anyway to enable this?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1269247
And gnex has it
Both Bricked and TamCore have this feature.
Bricked: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1269247
TamCore: http://files.tamcore.eu/android/?dir=tamcore-kernel
Bricked gives you an option to enable it during installation, while TamCore requires you to flash a zip to enable it, which you can get on the same page, under the name "sweep2wake_enable.zip".
A few kernels already have it.
I am already using it...
Already using it on bricked!
It's nice because you don't have to constantly use your power button to turn on device ! I really love it! It's so easy.

Is there any way to make it more efficient when locking the device? I find that it closes the current application and goes to the home screen (as you swipe the back and home keys when locking your device).
This is quite annoying when using an app like gmote when I may need to immediately unlock my phone again to pause/play adjust volume etc, as I find that the app has been terminated when putting the device to sleep.
I really like the idea of not having to mash my power button any more than necessary, so using the sweep to lock would be ideal. I also noticed that even in the demo video of sweep to wake, the menu button gets pressed as the phone is locked (you can see the launcher menu appear for a second before the device locks).
Any suggestions would be appreciated, but I wanted to get some guidance before posting any sort of feature requests in the dev forum.
Thanks guys!

However, I don't see how this is practical much. I only lock using sweep because it's a good shortcut to exit current app, go to home & luck.

I don't think theres a other way to unlock honestly...
I DO know theres a way to remap the buttons, so that you would (as example) be able to use the volume buttons for unlocking the screen. But I would have no idea how it actually works, too long ago since I saw it somewhere...
But about your power/unlock button, did it function normally before, or has it been bad since you got the phone?
Maybe there's some dirt or something in the button blocking it partly?

I have the same problem with the power button. It's not your fault, it's just the wrong way the button was made.
I use 2 apps to lock/unlock my phone by shake( and you can also unlock by hand gestures over the sensor- next to the front camera). You can try ShakeMe and you can also try to use Advanced Screen Control. Just install these 2 apps and play with the sensitivity and you'll find the perfect fit.
These 2 apps seem to be the best out of the bunch that you can find on the Play store.
Tell me if they work!

If you root, go to /System/Usr/Keylayout/
Edit Generic.kl file.
Adding 'WAKE' after Volume down and up.
Then go to setting>security>screen lock to none
Maybe some other expert member can figure out how to make this working when enable screen lock.
Sorry my english.

You can have screen lock on and use volume down to unlock:
- With a root access file manager like Root Explorer or ES File Explorer go to /system/usr/keylayout
- Open in text editor file fih_gpio-keys.kl
- Look for key 114 VOLUME_DOWN WAKE
- Replace the "VOLUME_DOWN" with "POWER".
- Save and reboot.
This essentially maps your volume down key as a power button. If you need to reduce the volume push volume up then use the on screen slider to set volume
