[Q] How to restore wifi passwords? - Android Software/Hacking General [Developers Only]

Before flashing my LG GT540 a few days ago, I backed up /data/misc/wpa_supplicant.conf, which is the file containing the wifi passwords.
Then after flashing it with a new ROM, noticed that if I replace the wpa_supplicant.conf file, the wifi won't work after rebooting.
To get the wifi working again after a reboot I have to remove /data/misc/wpa_supplicant.conf and then turn the wifi on. At this point I can replace again the wpa_supplicant.conf file and everything will work until the next reboot.
How am I supposed to restore the wifi passwords without removing and then reinstalling that file everytime I boot?
Anybody knows the reason of this error? Is there any log file? I couldn't find much from dmesg.
Already posted this same question on the GT540 subforum ten days ago, but got no answers and I think that this issue is not specific to my phone, since it was present in every ROM I tested (some 2.1, some 2.2 and some 2.3).

I would suggest 'wifi key recovery' application, then export them to your phone....

Don't need to see my wifi passwords: already got them from the wpa_supplicant.conf file. I just need to restore them without breaking the wifi.
I was more interested in understanding why my method fails, rather than in finding an app capable of restoring passwords, that's why I posted in the hacking subforum.
Anyway I'll try some apps for for now, thanks for the suggestions!

[Q] Oops, how to reinstall Tether manager

Hello, new to the forum.
I had an attack of stupidity while using Titanium and deleted the Tether Manager from my Infuse. Does anybody know how to restore it? And, NO, I did not have the smarts to back it up first.
Thanks

I'm not sure why you would want it, but here ya go:
If it doesn't run after you DL it, you need to use a root file manager, and copy and paste it into /system/app.
You may also need to apply permission to it: 0644 (all 3 boxes in the first column and the top on the second column
Sorry for the delay in response.
I just wanted to put it back because the phone came with it. The real problem is that I rooted the phone then installed "wifi tether" (loaded with errors in the log) but it wont work correctly, the laptop will tether but will not surf the internet. So I deinstalled it and was going to try the native application until THIS problem. So the real problem I guess is how to get a functioning tether for my Infuse.
PS. I love your signature, there is some good stuff in there.

[Q] Backup Tether settings in ICS?

Hey guys,
I'm runnign AOSPX BR1 and I'm trying to find a way to backup the tether settings in the settings menu so that I don't have to re-type my SSID and passphrase every time I re-flash. I didn't have much luck finding it via TiBu.
Anyone have any suggestions?
The one thing that comes to mind is finding this file in the system and backing that up manually, then re-flashing it as a zip after I flash a new rom. Is this plausible?
EDIT: I looked through the rom ZIP and found some tethering related stuff in the settings.apk file (and nowhere else). Going to try backing up settings.apk but not quite sure if it stores the actual tethering settings here. WIll report back soon with results when I re-flash

These are system Settings. While TIBU can do this it is not advised to restore any system settings as the way they are handled are changed often and will cause issues when restored. This is one of the prices one pays for flashing custom roms.

Yeah, that was one of my concerns with backing it up. Thanks zelendel!

[Q] Team Shogun ICS Rom

Hi I'm new here so it will only let me post in this area for now instead of the actual rom post...
I installed the rom last night and everything looked great!
I'm on wi-fi at home so I didn't notice any data connection problems. As soon as I left the realm of wi-fi I ran into a data connection problem while the browser sill worked as we as sms and phone calls the 4g and signal strength icons in the status bar never turned blue and any app I had that relied on data signal came back with a data connection error i.e. my accuweather and wellsfargo apps. I'm on the original ics leak from July from here.
Any help...
Thanks
PS I did search the original thread for related issues didn't find any.

i guess your "network type" is in Automatic
turn that to either 3G or 2G you'll get your data connection back ..... i tried & got it.
Look over your APN settings.
Try to just reboot your phone. Worked for me. Sometimes when you boot into a custom ROM its necessary to perform a reboot after the cache finishes building.

I tried rebooting a couple of times still had the same problem. Definitely not an apn issue as data still works for sms and chrome. As far as I know there is no toggle on the atrix 2 for 2/3g to 4g this may have changed in ics but there wasn't one on gb. Even the custom stuff I had wouldn't do it. I will double check on that.
This sucks because i really like the rom otherwise no fuss no muss just the stuff I want.
Make sure background data is on, and that you're Google account is signed in. I had problems with my account when I first upgraded to ICS. I resigned in and it worked fine.

Background data has been on as well as my google account. Everything works fine on ics it was just this particular rom.
The apps I was getting errors in are wells fargo and actuweather. Both got network errors and my 4g and signal strength never changed from gray to blue indicating full connection.

Rom was installed on a clean ics install (the July release from here recomended as the only one to use by the devs)
Guess I'll try it again to see if I can get it to work...
Ok reinstalled everything seems to be working fine. Error was human, mine... accidently had clicked on something and didn't realize it.
I even have the wifi hot spot working too. So I'm pretty stoked.
I swear I'm not a newb I'm on many other android forums just hadn't bothered messing with my phone for about eight months.
Thanks for all your replies!
Stock Browser
Gentlemen:
I like the Shogun ROM, but want Chrome browser gone. I uninstall, move the stock ICS Browser from SCV7 to my sd card to install, and it will not install. Just says App not Installed, nothing more specific. A poster in the development section addresses this by suggesting the APK be moved into system/apps folder, then a restart prior to installing. I have tried this as well to no avail. Not sure how many posts I lack to be able to post in the development section, but for now this is as close as I can get. I hope that this is an appropriate place for such a post.
Jerry
Good question Jerry as I too would like the stock browser. It actually seems faster than chrome to me.
I'll upload the titanium backup of the browser tomorrow..you can restore it and see if that works

Another question...
I'm having issues with the apex launcher not opening the proper apps etc. Is there anyway to go back to the stock ics launcher also?
OK I've got solutions for both of my issues.
Before you download the files read carfully:
Download files to your PC then copy to your SD card.
Use ES File Manager (free in the app store) to copy or one of the files (whichever you prefer) to the System/App folder. You must go to settings in ES and make sure you have view system files etc. check so you can see the actual folder. ES defaults to opening up the SD card just click the up arrow and it will take you to the system folder. You may have to restart ES after changing the permissions in order for you to see the system folder.
Do Not try to install the apk's it doesn't work that way.
Files:
Browser.apk - 1.79 MB
MotoAtLauncher.apk - 11.31 KB
If this helps please thank me!

extract the archive and put the files in sdcard\titaniumbackup folder..then go to titanium backup and restore..better to restore the app only rather than app+data

[Q] Cant login to my google account?

Hello guys
So Im running on latest CM11 Snapshot but even with re-installed gapps I still cant login to my google account.
Gapps were working ok about 2 weeks ago until Play Store started force closing so I tried clearing caches and re-installing gapps but I ended up with this problem
Looks like its not even trying to connect to google servers because it immediately pops up a screen saying that I cant establish a connection to google servers when I press login.
Im connected to my home wifi.
Im trying to attempt this fix but I cant find any root text editor that would open the hosts without getting stuck or refusing to save the file. Im still properly rooted...
Any suggestions guys?

I usually us ES file Manager, which bundles in its own little text editor. Just remember to enable root access in settings if it doesn't prompt you to do so on first start

Tried with that one, edits fine but displays an error when saving the file.
Damnit Im losing my hope, I dont want to re-install everything from stock rom again /_\
Edit the file with whatever but do NOT save back to /system/etc. Save to sdcard, *then* use root explorer to transfer & overwrite.

[Q] Phone not remembering any new Wi-Fi passwords since KitKat updgrade

My phone is losing credentials for any WiFI network that I connect to since I've upgraded to Android 4.4.2.
Key points:
- It will remember the credentials until I restart the phone or turn WiFi on and off.
- It permanently remembers the passwords for all networks that were saved before upgrading to 4.4.2
- Despite disabling App Sync and Backup+Restore, the problem persists
- I do not have a /data/.../wifi/wpa-supplicant.conf file
- My phone is not rooted
I've been searching around and have yet to find any solutions that work for me, has anyone else with this problem had any luck solving it?
Sometimes, upgrades don't play well and you need to factory reset the device to get browner things working again. There may be something else you can do, but I would always recommend resetting after an ota update.
You can backup your user apps and data with helium. Copy sdcard to PC.

Delete /data/misc/wifi and /data/misc/dhcp and reboot.
If that doesn't work, factory reset.

/data is empty when viewing it with my unrooted phone using OI File Browser.
You'll either have to root your device to delete the folders or do a factory reset.
