[Q] Sim unlock required after Baseband Upgrade? - T-Mobile LG G2x

Will upgrading to the new V21Y fw require me to re-unlock the phone because of the baseband update? I have the unlock code for the phone but I'm about to take a business trip to another country where I want to use another sim. Im afraid that the V21Y firmware update would sim lock the phone again and require a new unlock code.

No it will not.

Thanks, gonna try it this weekend

The unlock is stored in a special partition of NVRAM which is never touched by a firmware update. Once unlocked the phone remains unlocked unless your carrier relocks it by OTA, which they never do.

[Q] will I be able to get OTA updates if phone is unlocked ?

If I unlock my sensation and use it on a non t Mobile network, will I be able to get the OTA update htc is pushing out in august to unlock the bootloader?
Yes you will still be able to. If your phone is branded to t-mobile it the update might take a bit longer as T-Mobile need to approve the update.

If you flashed cwm recovery, you are unable to update by ota.And i think,if you have unlocked your phone, why not use custom roms, they are much better than official roms.If you use custom roms, ota is not necessary at all.
I thought you can't flash custom roms with a locked bootloader?
i think he is talking about sim unlocking?

He was asking about sim unlock, not s-off
Yes, sorry should have clarified , I meant sim unlock.
My SIM unlocked Bell unit (on Rogers) received the OTA update last week no problem!

Flashing and subsidy codes

I have an Atrix 2 I wish to root and flash. I also like being able to flash back to stock ICS via the AT&T FXZ. If I am to flash the AT&T FXZ would I loose my subsidy unlock and/or change the code to the one of the phone used to compile the FXZ? Mods, I tried searching and also to post this in the appropriate threat but I could not due to my N00Bi3n355. I would greatly appreciate a solid answer as to whether I will change my subsidy unlock code or possibly relock the phone by flashing Pzyduck's AT&T FXZ.
You will loose my subsidy unlock after flashing to stock but the code remains same. You can unlock it again whenever you Want.
Locks it again but if you have access to the unlock code then you are good.
Unlock codes are tied to the imei

Thanks to you both. Last time I owned a Moto was in the feature phone RAZR days. If I recall correctly some of the monster packs would mess with modem software. I suppose as long as this phone's baseband stays locked the subsidy code will not be endangered?

I like to think this would be simple. Perhaps you can help?

Here's what I got. ATT LG G3 running stock Marshmallow D85030p with what I presume is the newest security patch (June 2016)
At this point it's not on a carrier but it's locked by ATT. They kept my number as well.. A number that was mine from previous carriers.
Will I be able to root, install TWRP, and unlock this device to use on a prepaid carrier? Keep in mind this same phone has been flashed, rooted and ran recovery mods and ROMs before. Still in perfect working condition after receiving it's last stock OTA.

First of all what do you mean they kept your number? Did you cancel? Unpaid bill? That would be a deciding factor on how to go about things.
But no root cannot unlock your device
1. If you left AT&T in good standing AT&T will unlock the device for free. Even if you don't have any account.
2. If not then you can get it unlocked for a few dollars from some eBay sellers.
3. What prepaid carrier? If Any provider that runs on AT&Ts network you don't have to get it unlocked, it will work fine with Go Phone, Cricket , H2O and many others that run on AT&Ts network.
But a note if it's no longer on AT&T due to unpaid bill, or on bad terms remember the device may no longer work on any GSM carrier within the USA due to AT&T will blacklist it.

I understand root alone won't unlock it. With all that being said can I still root and flash a recovery method that are permanent? Does MM still not have a reliable root or recovery method?

You would need to downgrade to KitKat to do that. But remember once you downgrade you'll no longer be able to go back to any official firmware Past KitKat without an AT&T SIM card of some sort to ota update it.
Also remember if you get an unlock code you need to be running stock D850 firmware or else you won't be able to enter the unlock code.

Are there any unofficial MM or Lollipop ROMs that are worth looking into? I couldn't care less if it's official honestly. And that last bit you said, you mean if I wanted a phone unlocked I'd have to basically wipe my phone?

If you unlock before you leave behind stock then no you don't have to wipe. Once you install any custom ROM, your only option to unlock at that point is to revert back to stock, which means wiping.

Yes you can, if you are on stock. You will need to get the unlock code from AT&T, be on stock firmware, and have an active SIM card from another carrier (I.e. T-Mobile or of it's MVNOs like MetroPCS). Once you have the unlock code, put in the SIM card, turn on the phone, and you will get the prompts for the code you got. Then you're done.

Would installing unlocked bootloader and firmware unlock the phone?

So what I want to do is switch this phone to straight talk but want the att bloatware off this. If I install unlocked firmware and root the device would that make it unlocked? Like not carrier locked. Straight talk said I can already use a Sim despite it being locked but I wanna unlock it myself.
I don't think att will yet and not sure if they will at all. I'm converting my chapter 13 bankruptcy to a 7 on Tuesday and att bill is rolled into it so the phones will be mine once that is discharged but not sure if they will unlock them right after or if it will take months, that's why I'm asking this. I already reinstalled att firmware on this phone because I tried to install a custom room and messed up due to the bootloader issue of it being v5 I think.

can a carrier model be unlock and rooted ?

hi
i have a 7pro t mobile version. i was following a guide to unlock the bootloader and root the phone. until i downloaded oxygen updater and it says the phone cant get updates, had to stop. so. can the phone be unlock?
then I can continue with the guide on how to root it,
or my options are limited here ?
thanks
The SIM unlock aspect needs to be done with the T-Mobile unlock tool built into the stock firmware. Bootloader unlocking can be attained by Flashing international firmware via MSM-- then unlocking as if it were international. However, that will result in the SIM still being restricted to T-Mobile if it has not been SIM-unlocked
Edit: Bootloader can also be unlocked with the T-Mobile software installed, a request can be submitted through 1+ to have a file emailed to you, containing an unlock file to be used while on carrier firmware, called an Unlock Token. However, this process will take a week for 1+ to review, and approve if applicable.
