Hey all, quick question hopefully you all can help me out with. I am currently having terrible battery issues ever since I flashed my phone initially. Terrible as in 6 hours stand-by my phone would be dead.
Anyhow, I am just trying to figure out who's (which) kernel I am running. The kernel version is 2.6.35.7-I997RUXKG3-CL366622 . I have done searches but biggest problem is, threads usually do not post the version number for me to check what I am running.
I am on Infused 2.1.0 (thx GTG!), but battery life has been garbage on all ROMs so I am certain that is not the issue. Can anyone let me know, me love you long time.

Just the community kernel you can download CPU spy to help with that as well.

Maybe u just have a bad battery 6 hours is horrible off stand by.
unless you have some other things running thats eating it up. when you check your battery stats whats eating the most power. Display? Android Proccess?
check that out.

Thanks for suggesting CPU Spy, looks like I am running Infusion-GB which is what I wanted. So something else is killing my battery

Problem is I bought 2 extra batteries and get exact same life. When I initially bought the phone I would get a days use surprisingly. After that, I have had nothing but god awful drain. I have had almost a dozen android phones and have never encountered such terrible battery life.
I do not have fetch data enabled/gps/widget updates or anything that would normally keep the processor/data churning while in my pocket. Battery use is usually around 40-80% on display, all other categories being minimal (which seems correct).
I'm banging my head on this one, I appreciate you guys replying to my thread

Can't post outside links since I'm newer, sent PM with screen capture
1% per 3 hours standby is FREAKING AWESOME..!!!!
Maybe u have some stray app in the background that's using CPU/whatever it is that's eating up ur battery.
Some subtle things u cud try since u said display is taking up 40-80% of battery:
1. Turning off screen auto rotation, turning it on when needed
2. Turning off auto brightness, turning it on to auto when needed
Use SetCPU like people above pointed out and this would let u see what processor states ur phone is spending most time in.
It sounds like for some people, Infusion 1.1 really flakes out. No clue why. I don't overclock so I don't run it.
It's either Infusion 1.1 flaked out, or if you continue having problems with other kernels, you have a rogue app.
Kernels rarely make any significant difference in battery life unless they're broken.

Running Infusion-GB 1.1 and Infused 2.1.0: I get 1% drain every 3 hours on standby with radio on (reasonable H+ reception) and 1% every 6 hours on flight mode.
It's most likely a defect in your phone or a configuration issue. You really have to be using your phone for at least 4 or 5 hours (screen-on time) over those 6 hours to cut through battery that fast.

when you go to settings > applications > running services - is there anything there that looks like it shouldn't be there?
i know that there is a process that starts with an "o" that is tied into media hub's protected content (DRM) - eats a ton of battery, and isn't really necessary.
it's also possible that you have the SNS service going, but constantly in a restarting state. this seemed to eat a lot of battery also.
otherwise, i'd do what others have suggested and monitor with CPU spy, and i'd also suggest an app called Better Battery Stats (not available in the market - find it here on XDA by a developer named chamonix). this will let you know if you have any wakelocks that are preventing your phone from reaching deep sleep when it is idle.
definitely sounds like you could have a wakelock or 2 interfering with your phone trying to get into those lower frequencies.
wipe battery stats?

Packets in/out isn't what you want unless you also have unusual data usage too. It's wakelock stats you want - look at the BetterBatteryStats app. It used to be only on XDA but apparently it's on the market now.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again - Wiping battery stats does NOTHING on our phone. Don't go blindly telling people to do something on our devices just because it worked on another device. The fuel gauge chip on GalaxyS series phones works in a very different way than HTC phones. (Exception: I think the GSII has a more traditional fuel gauge.)

Im just switching to AOSP JB by AdamG Version 0.1.4.
No mod, stock AdamG ROM kernel, full wipe, just install few app such as whatsapp, cpuspy, medscape etc...this is not my daily phone..

You need to install a better app. The Android built in power usage thing is about as much use as a chocolate teapot, and better battery stats isn't much better.
Try system panel from Play, you will need the paid version from here. Put it in monitoring mode and leave it for a few hours.
You will be able to see what is chewing CPU then, and that is invariably the thing that is causing the drain. It very rarely fails to assist me with diagnosis of an obscure drain issue.
Ok..just bought system panel app.will update about this crazy battery drain later..
Thanks thalamus..

Cool, it's well worth the couple of dollars.
I've used it pretty much constantly in monitoring mode since they were in beta when I had my desire. So, probably not far off a couple of years usage with me.
It doesn't eat battery either, because it polls when the device wakes up for another reason.
And the thing which really makes it good for me, it records usage of the system tasks, such as kernel threads, which can be massively handy in diagnosing an issue.
Solved by flashing latest adamG ROM..

Hi guys.
Here is a mod I made to eliminate wake up lag on lock screen when pressing home button.
this mod is on the file androidpolicy.jar
my mod includes 4 way reboot and ink effect (WITH PEN ONLY)
download file and flash in recovery.
Thanks to MIKEYXDA for How To.....
Feel Free to use this in your ROMS, but please give credits
this mod is for LSZ!!!
PLEASE READ: This mod adds a wake lock to your phone and could prevent it from going into deep sleep.
I've added the Q and A from MIKEYXDA guide so you can make up your own mind.
please make a backup first!!!
Just to let users know this mod may not put your phone into deep sleep coz what the mod does is create a partial wakelock - that is how it enables zero wake-lag.

if this mod really make phone not going to sleep..it will make battery drain faster..
here is the Q and A from MIKEYXDA guide:

I did a lot of research on that and it's not so easy to answer. Generally, I believe battery will be no worse and possibly better. Google location services, alarms, widgets, push mail, and many other processes end up waking up 99% of phones at least once every 3 minutes anyway and the deep-sleep-->awake-->deep sleep cycles actually consume more power than letting the processor(s) stay awake. On my phone for example, Google location services alone woke the phone 20 times/hr (every 3 minutes) and that's with GPS turned off and no navigation or map activities running! Add a weather widget here, a push mail app there, and I found that my phone was bouncing in and out of deep sleep more than a hundred times an hour! Better (on both battery and circuitry) to just idle at that point. With only one CPU awake with screen off, the radio will draw more power than the CPU idling. Most people don't realize that the screen and radio eat orders of magnitude more power than (especially an idling) CPU, so idling one CPU will have little effect on battery. That said, I suppose if you put your phone in airplane mode and maybe froze a bunch of other apps that wake the phone, maybe battery would be worse with the ZeroWakeLag wakelock and the phone would do better in deep sleep. Reality is: we don't use our phones that way.
I guess the only way to test this is to run the mod for a while and see how it goes.
my battery I ****ed anyway and I have to charge twice a day so its not much of an issue for me, but for all you battery hungry folks out there it may cause issues.
would be nice if users could report any differences they see and we can together figure out if it is more of a hindrance than an advantage

First thing you should know is that I am not a technical person, but a logical man. Following is my personal views. This mod may not put the device in deep sleep at all. In the cpu spy you will find above deep sleep, 200, 500, 800 mhz bars. Normally you may find even the deep sleep shows a good % the other bars 200,500,800 also show varied %s.
So may be this wakeup lag mod control these 200,500,800,1000 mhz to near zero, then overall battery consumption could be very less. Only experiments can answer this.
I shall flash this and see any difference.

Actually I was waiting for your reply.(pls refer my earlier post). Another thing is I have already got 4 way reboot and ink effect. I just wanted wake up lag mod. Any way I shall flash. Already made backup. Let you know after 24-48 hours. Thanks.
Rom: Team Union V6 Full.
The problem with this mod is that it is integrated into android.policy.jar and if users wanted to disable it, they will have to flash the original android.policy.jar of the rom they are using. To achieve the same effect without modifying android.policy.jar, xda member sms200 has made an app that integrates this zero wake up lag in his app and users will be able to test or use it at will. HERE is the app and HERE is the post for more info. Just install it and enable/disable Permanent PWL.
I read through most of that tread and missed that bit lol
What ive done is copy original androidpolicy inside framework as androidpolicy.jar.bk and then copied original so i can revert at anytime. This is included in my rom aswell (both files)
Feel free to use my mod or the app depends what users prefer.
Dsmas - the 4way reboot and ink effect is included because if i didnt and you flashed the mod you would lose both functions.
Ive been testing some sharedpref mods and a remote control app so i might be able to create something to enable/disable in my galactus mod pack (WIP see my rom thread)

I am running [ROM][4.0.4] Slim ICS(T959V)-UNOFFICIAL posted by beastmode, Question is there a more updated kernel I could use with it ?
I am thinking either [KERNEL]Proton Kernel build2[ICS][TFQ] or [Kernel]ICS/CM9 LZ Kernel from Team Fah-Q (Updated 20OCT12)
I am very happy with this ROM and GPS is working great (after a few hacks from other threads) but battery life is the worst !!! I lose 5% when using Waze/GPS plugged into the car charger and about 20% overnight just sitting there, I have tried all sorts of battery apps as well as turning off wifi at night with no luck. So I am thinking that a new kernal would help.
I only use the phone for GPS and Web browsing.
Has anyone used these kernels and with what ROMS ?
Interesting in upgrading not bricking my phone and installing everything from scratch
yes i am a newbie so apologies in advance ! Thanks.
Neither of those kernels (nor, really, anything else) is going to make Waze or any other GPS app stop using as much power as they do. If you wanted to change your scheduler and governor, those might make a difference... but anything with working GPS is a Herring kernels using the same paths to talk to the GPS.

Thanks for taking the time to answer. Even if GPS is a battery sucker what can I do about the fact that leaving the phone on takes so much battery ?
Could you suggest other stable kernel/ROMS for the SGH-T959V that support GPS and have decent battery life ? I like the simplicity of ICS and since all I do with this phone is browse the web and use GPS I really don't need any bells and whistles.
Thanks.
The two best ICS at the moment are probably Ultragen 1.01 (be sure NOT to use 1.00) or HebMIUI, which is the only ICS that still gets irregular updates.
The big thing to do with Waze is, if you don't NEED to stare at the screen, turn it off and just listen to the audio directions. Sucks down a LOT less battery that way, though it's still a bit painful.
Regarding general ways of improving battery life... look into Greenify if you haven't yet. Can tell apps to stop running in the background if you don't actually want them to. Just remember NOT to Greenify Waze if you don't want it to shut down with the screen off, or your music app, or anything else you actually want to use while you're not actively looking at it. Oh, and avoid Greenifying your email too. Though it's funny, it's not a good way to find out about new messages.

yes, <1,5% is good in idle but it can be better because for me, its 0,3-0,5%/h, sometimes only 0,1%/h (it means 0,6-3% max. for my 6 hour night)

Maybe the apps which you didnt greenify cause this battery drain ( not sure if this is a high drain as im using tweaky one Rom with faux kernel.. Would you recommend to greenify motorola services? I did once and couldn't check for updates and get it back working was a pain in the arse. I am currently having around 1% drain with wifi on 24/7 but once I had around 0.4 to 0.6%/h. Can't find wakelocks aswell, currently on stock kernel and rom.
