[Q] Wifi has poor signal most of the time - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys,
My tf101 has wifi connectivity issues. My router is approx. 15 meters away from my room and it has poor wifi signal most of the time or no signal at all.
When I turn it on, it finds it and connects, I am able to browse. But then, a few seconds after staying connected, it disconnects again, it just disappears, zero signal. I turn off wifi and then back on. It either does the same thing, or, tries to authenticate/connect to the network and disappears again. When I put my tablet right next to the router, it connects perfectly for much longer. But sometimes, it still loses signal completely!
Soon after, I decided to do some research and I found out that changing Channels (I changed it to Channel 6) on the router could help. So I did, and it magically works. It manages to connect and stays on for much longer, but... it sometimes still does the same thing. But when I'm not at home, I can't change the wifi channel settings (I don't think?) so I want to know why this happens...
Even my Sony Android phone, has average wifi signal and is able to browse smoothly from where my room is.
I've been thinking if the root cause of this problem is from the antenna inside the tablet? Maybe not connected properly?
Should I open it up? And if so, is it safe to open it up? And what should I do when I open it up? Does anyone know anything about how the Wi-Fi system works in the tablet?
I am in need of some advice on how to open it and what I should do to fix it.
I'm worried that I might break it somehow...
Cheers,
Hong

What ROM are you running? Some have wifi issues. Even the stock asus ICS rom have so-so wifi imo.
As for opening it up... That would just be stupid if you dont know what youre doing. Some parts are extremely fragile, especially the frame around the display.
Youre better off RMA'ing it.

Had the same issue, solved it by replacing my f*cking Linksys WAG2G with an Buffalo Gigabit router.

Stock rom, stock asus ICS.
I have a bit of experience in opening up laptops, which are quite compact but not as compact as a tablet or a phone I'm guessing.
Is there a good method of opening it up the tablet? Like a video tutorial or something?

I don't think it's my router problem though... All my other devices can connect to the Wi-Fi from the same distance perfectly.
So I'm guessing it's the device itself, either the hardware side or the software side... Still not sure

Trust me when I say this: The difference between the TF and a laptop is like the difference between a PC and a laptop ... ok maybe not quite as extreme, but theres a huge difference.
And yes there is a video tutorial on these forums, somewhere...

Cant take the WIFI issue anymore as I think its Hardware

The design is to blame for the wifi issue. IMO the G2x rebooting problem is less severe than this. I use wifi 90% of the time and ive had 3 units which all had this issue.
The others that dont, I dont know how you got lucky, or if you got a bad ass N router and thats the trick, but I cant take it. I cant even play a online FPS game in my room without losing signal. Anyone want to prove me wrong in that there are a few good ones? and if so please post a video?
Death grip here also. I guess I'll just have to live with it.
However, there is one good thing. HTC can release a cover with a design that won't have the issue (they won't, but I hope there will be some 3rd party ones)
Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710e
"Deathgrip"? WTF is that. the iPhone disgusts me, thanks for this.. now it's running rampant all over the internet even when it doesn't make sense.
There is obviously a problem with the WiFi signal strength and yes it's a design/hardware issue. Exchanging the phone won't fix the problem.
I solved it by moving up a WiFi router in my room that repeats the WiFi signal from my main router. I had the secondary router already running DD-WRT software which is required for this type of thing.
Why didn't you just continue your other thread? 2 about the same thing is a bit much
No deathgrip here, I've tried and tried. Dunno what to say Brah. Works the same with my N router and my G router, Perfectly.

Don't think this one posted...
It's got to be ground issue.
yeah. i have been with mine for 2 weeks and since about just a couple of hours ago the wifi wont work. it was working fine all day then i was going to check fb and it said that there was no connection. it clearly had full signal. i restarted the phone and worked well. then later i was going to access the camera app directly from the lock screen and it froze, it wont do anything. pulled the battery and turned on the phone. after turning on the phone i turned on the wifi and it will not connect. it detects the signals and tells you all the info about it but it wont connect. it stays in a loop saying obtaining ip address, disconnected and scanning and then goes back again to obtaining ip address and so on. i have done 2 hard resets and restarted the router and nothing.btw the router is in the same room just a couple of feet from me.
EDIT : i think i jump the gun too fast. tested my ps3 thru the wireless network and it connects like 50% of the time. again the ps3 is in the same room as the router. went to my cousins house and the phone conected to the wireless effortless on the first try. i dont know if it is the phone or the router.i dont know what to think anymore.
The Sensation doesn't have brilliant WiFi reception and can't hold on to a weak signal if you hold the device, whereas something like a laptop could.
But with a good signal it does work well and for me that's a fair trade off at present. Yes it could be better, but is there a perfect device.
Typing this in Starbucks at present over WiFi and yes in landscape, and I even have my fingers covering the back of the device
Full signal strength. Same at home.
I tried this in another Starbucks, I lost connection every time in landscape mode, returned in portrait, that has been the only time that I could recreate this death grip issue.....

I've seen a few issues lately with the Cisco/Linksys E1000 routers and wifi. 3 out of the 5 i installed in the past 6 months kept dropping wifi, even right next to it. Probably not what you have, but just in case, i thought i would mention it. At $50-$60 they've been a popular model lately.
I am using a netgear n router and I still have signal in the basement and second floor (router is on the first floor)..I haven't noticed any WiFi problems but I have only had the phone 3 days...but I use WiFi calling all the time..
Sensation/G2x Best of Both Worlds
Stop posting threads about this. The Sensation has an alleged WiFi problem. We get it. Unless you have a LEGIT fix for it, don't post about it.

[Q] Slow download speeds, only on Android?

I have a wireless router in my house and an extender. The extender is there because my bedroom is slightly less than a bar of WiFi strength. Everything has been peachy for about 8 months. The past week or two though, I've noticed that on my Nexus 7 and Galaxy Nexus, whenever they're updating apps from the store or download new ones, they do it at less than 10kbps. It took me 20 minutes to update a single app last night.
I thought it could be the extender itself. so I turned on my laptop and did a speed-test AND downloaded a file just to check, and it all checks out. The file downloaded at over a meg a second, and the speed-test was low (compared to my actual router), but perfectly acceptable. Does anyone know what could cause this kind of problem with just Android devices? Is it the devices, the extender, my actual router? Any ideas would be great, because I'm totally stumped, and it's getting very irritating! Thanks.
I think
this was due to your router

What does it do that curses the phone/tablet but not my laptop? Is there something I should change?
Sewrizer said:
Android devices have no problem with wifi, if the speed is slow is either because of the router or because of the extender. Try to reset your router or call the your internet provider.
Also, download on your device speed test and run it, just to be sure.
On the other hand, it may be a problem with google.
These are only assumptions, try connecting to youtube, wikipedia, etc. and see if they work. or, when you go to a restaurant/fast food, you can connect to their hotspot and see if it works properly.

I'll try resetting my router and extender. They actually have no problem when they're connected to my router itself, just the extender. I would assume that would make it the extender, but resetting it has had no effect, and my laptop that runs off it has no issues. That's why I'm confused!
The phone and tablet have no issues on other WiFi spots at friend's houses or family's. They work as I suspect they should. I'll definitely run a speed test next time and see what comes up though. Thanks for the tips!
So I've reset the modem and the extender, and still no dice. The speed tests on the phone and the tablet show at minimum 10mbps, and websites and apps (Facebook, Twitter) load quickly. However, when I download a new app or update my existing apps in the market, they update at 10kbps or less. I can't figure this out! It's driving me nuts.
The same problem here
My download speed on my device 20kb only!!
However on my laptop my download speed about 1-3 MB WTF -__-

I've had this issue before.
Android's run into this issue it seems pretty often. I usually just restart my phone and it fixes it. (Which I'm sure you've tried) I don't think this is an actual issue that many people know how to fix... I'd wait and just see if it goes back to normal by days end.

And if you got comcast. Then thats why LOL
Ive had this problem before and the only way I could fix it was by installing a completely different custom rom.
I also have the similar issue but in my case 3G internet isn't that fast on my phone. But when I use my phone's internet on laptop (hostspot) that work fine.

ME301T - WiFi major issue

Hi everyone,
I've got a ME301T here having kind of a weird issue.
What's happening here is that everytime I try to connect to any WiFi network, it gets stuck on "Connecting..." and then goes back to Saved, secured with WPA2 - like if nothing happened. I also noticed that the WiFi signal of the specified network gets to one bar when if was full a second before, everytime, at the moment of "Connecting...".
So what I've tried:
I've flashed to 10.6.1.38, no success.
Downgraded to 10.6.1.27 as well, and tried x.x.x.29 also.
All downloaded from Asus.ca.
No success still.
I've tried different AP's every possible securities (and also none). Always the same.
I also tried to put a static IP to see if there was somehow a problem communicating with DHCP, nope. I've shut down the DHCP server, made a MAC reservation for that specified device, nothing. And so on.
Anyone have an idea?
Thanks!
Sir,
Please wait until mods will move this thread to the device specific forum for more relevant answers.

Good luck
Which channel is your router on? If 13 drop it lower.
Thanks to you guys for your answers.
I've tried channel 10 down to 1, also changed bands from both router and tablet (2.4, 5, auto), and so on.
All the same.
Do you think a flash to CM would help?
Thanks in advance.
No idea? Thinking about opening it to switch the WiFi chip, not sure if it's a pain in the a** to open those kind of tablets tho.

Fairly simple - just be aware they have some glue so heat with a hair dryer to melt a bit.
It does sound like a hardware fault.
Alright thanks mate, I'll leave an update on that.
Does somebody know where I could find that specific chip, and what would be the normal price? Does not seem to be that common at all.
Thanks.

Wouldn't it be more comfortable to go for a 'new' logic board?
http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_fro...c+board.TRS0&_nkw=ME301T+logic+board&_sacat=0
Chip coudn't be much cheaper if you ever find one single; and if you are not the solder crack, you might have difficulties to unsolder properly (I myself messed up every single attempt of desoldering a baseband/wifi chip).
Would be a good idea. I'll go on with that I think, since the price doesn't seem to be that high.
Thanks!
Minor diagnostic help
My customer's ASUS ME301T / K1000 connected just fine to a free wifi hotspot at a bank, but not two fast food joints or my own.
At another web page's casual observation, I tried the laptop sitting right on top of the router. Literally touching the two together. It WORKED!
Even two inches didn't allow eh tablet to connect.
Possibilities:
The bank has a 5ghz signal where all the others have 2.4 and the tablets antenna is shot (or very nearly so) thus connecting only when in contact.
A 5ghz router runs $45. A possible fix if you can test with one. I don't have one and don't relish shelling out $45 for a failed diagnostic.
Just wanted to share these two observations. Maybe yours will respond similarly.
A figure a bank might have spent a bit more for their hardware and it had dual band capability.
Hey guys,
I've changed the logic board. No changes. All same.
What now? Is there another hardware part directly related to WiFi control?
Thanks again.

I just made the tablet touch the router and it DID connect.
I am just about frustrated about not giving it a shot before. Damn.
Thanks!!
Now that doesn't fix the issue of course since I'm not sure if there's a way to fix that.
Is the antenna the actual frame? Would it be a connection between this and the board? What to do?
Follow up
The user was willing to take a chance on my being right and risked his money instead of mine.
Got a refurb Cisco dual band router from Amazon for $33 and hooked it up.
The tablet connected without issue.
The 2.4gHz antenna was shot but the 5gHz was strong. Thus, the bank network working just fine.
The router is an easier fix, but swapping out the antenna MIGHT work. I ain't gonna try given the lower cost and almost no hassle of the dual band router replacement.

Major wifi issue in pixel

Everything is smooth and perfect except Wifi.
I can found close wifi networks (Mobile hotspots created by other phones) but if I try to connect it just saves them, cannot connect to any wifi networks.
And the strength is too low. It is unable to find my room's wifi ...!!
So I am just totally unable to use wifi in my Pixel :/
Also I turn on Hotspot on my Pixel, it turns on but I cannot find it from other devices.
Also upgraded from 8.1.0 to 9.0 but still same issue.
Without Wifi its so miserable experience Any Solution?????
Yeah, same issue. It's a hardware thing. If you've dropped your phone either the cable came loose or the PCB board is off. I threw mine before (long story) but can't use wifi nor Bluetooth without being close to what I'm connected to.
I just don't feel like fixing it considering the pixel can break by repair. Plus, my 6p is my DD anyway
Dang, I gave my sister this phone and this problem just appeared. Time to look for a new phone for her.
Ok, being real for a second, this worked and I know it is a VERY BAD workaround but can help in a pinch.
I bought a refurb pixel on woot. Took a while to get it because it was sent to a friend's PO box and then brought to mexico, ergo no warranty.
Unboxed it and had this exact same issue; little to no signal on very few wifi hotspots and just "saving"
Seeing as this might be hardware related as @creep138 mentioned, I tried the following:
PRESS considerably hard on the point that the antenna connector should be.
After a couple of seconds of force and massaging, wifi came on and connected.
I KNOW this is a bad idea, I KNOW this might cause several issues on the long run, but if you have it sitting in a drawer doing nothing because of this issue, give it a try.
For reference this was done on a Verizon Black Pixel. The small one. and the point to apply pressure to is about half an inch below the camera and flash module.
Hope this helps

Status update:
After doing what I have already described, that helped to connect to the wifi at my workplace. Nonetheless I didn't have suck luck with my home wifi.
After reading here and there, some users reported the device connecting to 5Ghz wifi no problem. My work is indeed 5Ghz and my home is 2.4
After unpacking and installing a 5Ghz capable router, the pixel connected no problem to it (after applying the aforementioned pressure)
Hope this helps

OnePlus 6 causing router to crash

So I just bought a OnePlus 6 and am having problems with my router, whenever it connects to it it crashes the whole thing. Every other connection goes down the wired one's everything. Eventually it reboots and connects and works fine, but it does it every time it disconnects then reconnects.
I dont understand how that's even possible. Oneplus 6 is on the latest updates, I dont have a clue what to do about it.
Asus router? 66u - i have the same.
I know there is a way to fix it, but if you have better internet than 10mbit u wont be happy as it will throttle the speed. I have 300mbit so I just live with it. Bought a switch to connect to the shield TV and pc, all on wireless still goes down when I get home for about 15 seconds annoying? Yupp

Yep its an Asus router, on a 200mb connection. So I guess the best solution is to think about getting a new router.

Yeah, I know it disappeared a while back, one one of the betas i think. And then it began again. Not sure if they ever cared at all about the bug tho. Didnt look for a fix in months, so there might be one out there.
