Task:
Trying install Virtous Inquisiton ICS Rom.
I rooted and update the firmware of my htc sensation.
I installed the virtuous inquistion rom but now have this annoying pop ups that I continually force close but they never go away.
(see attachments)
Then when I try to get back into Recovery mode to point to another rom, I can't as I'm stuck with this screen ?
(see attachments)
All it does it update successfully but then after I reboot it I get the above mentioned errors.
I say no, and it simply reboots.
Where do I go from here ?
What can I do next ?
Thanks for your help
EDIT: :what: woah I just realized your bootloader is still locked, did you s off using revolutionary? Follow the steps below to get into recovery but don't do anything else from there. You need to s off. I don't know enough about this phone yet to really figure out the mess you made, anyone wanna jump in?
Hi,
Delete the firmware update that you installed from your ad card by:
1. Take out sd
2. Boot into bootloader (phone completely off then hold power + volume down)
3. Select recovery
4. Once booting into recovery insert sd then mount to computer and delete from there
You should be able to normally boot into recovery now to flash whatever you need

i can do steps 1 to 3. But I can't mount it to my pc ? I don't see any drives listed on my pc ? I tried "mounts and storage" but it tells me unable to write lunfile ... etc. etc..

1. Take SD card out
2. Boot into Hboot
3. Let Hboot stop looking for PG58IMG.zip (You know all the stuff you see pop up and then go away)
4. Put SD card back in device
5. Select recovery
6. Select Mounts ad storage
7. Select USB

Do you have a card reader or another phone with a microSD slot? If so just hook that up to your computer and delete the firmware file
Let me know how it goes!

You have to skip it for now put sdcard go to hboot then scroll to recovery put sdcard in power and go on
Suck I have to do this till you get a Rom in

Ok basically all you have to do is find a way to delete the PG4*8.IMG then boot into recovery and flash a different rom, don't forget to wipe

Hi all,
Seeing as Telus now has the Desire, a lot of people are a little confused how to root and flash it. I will list the steps I did in order to root mine and run a nightly Cyanogen build on it.
A few notes before we get started. I use a Mac/Ubuntu 10.04 so Windows people will have to get the drivers installed by installing HTC Sync then uninstalling just the software leaving the drivers on the system. I also do not want the Sense software so my tutorial will use ROMS based off of stock Android. Flash what you want though
Steps for Rooting:
1. Goto http://unrevoked.com and download the software
2. Get the needed recovery image from here http://crop.floodbit.org/~defer/recovery-clockwork-2.5.0.1-bravo-slcd.img
***DO NOT plug you Desire into your computer yet***
3. Start unrevoked and goto File>Custom Recovery and point it to the recovery image that you downloaded earlier
4. Enable USB debugging on your Desire Settings>Applications>Developement
5. Plug Desire into your computer, unrevoked should start its goodness
6. Once you are left at the recovery boot and unrevoked says "Done!", disconnect your Desire and click the Trackpad to select "reboot system now", phone should reboot into normal mode
7. Check for Superuser Permissions app, if you see it you're good if not retry
You can still install rom manager from the market to use the "Reboot to recovery" option as it is handy but do not let it install the recovery image, it will mess up your flashing.
Steps for flashing:
1. Go here to grab a Cyanogen build http://mirror.kanged.net/cm/nightly/bravo/
(I used 08092010 as of this writing)
2. Once zip is download, copy it to your SD card
3. Get the updated radio needed from here http://android.adamg.co.uk/bravo/radio/32.43.00.32U_5.09.00.20.zip
4. Reboot into recovery either using rom manager or by powering off you Desire and powering it back on while holding down Vol-. Rom manager will get you to the recovery console right off, other method will bring you to hboot screen. Select Recovery with the Volume rocker and then click the power button to launch it.
5. Select "install zip from SD card" using the trackpad and select the radio zip that you download earlier
6. Let it do its thing (could take up to 10 mins to finish), phone should reboot to recovery, use the back button to get to main menu and select "reboot system now" with the trackpad
7. Once rebooted check that the new radio is good by going to Settings>About phone>Software information (or whatever its called), if good lets continue, if not redo till it works
8. Reboot to recovery as before, select "wipe cache partition", "factory reset" to clear out any junk leftover and once done select "install zip from sd card"
9. Select the ROM we downloaded before with the trackpad and click it
10. Wait for it to do its thing, could take up to 20 mins to finish
11. Phone should reboot into your new rom
Hope this help people.
*I am not responsible for bricking your phone.*
UPDATE August 23 2010 - Once you have eveyrthing working, check ROM Manager. If it says that you need to install ClockworkMod (as it wont pick up the custom one) go ahead and do it. I am running 2.5.0.7 ClockWorkMod and the SLCD is supported by it so you can see the recovery console.
did you make a gold card first?
Thanks!
Just got to unlock when i get home, then time to flash radio and new rom!
Just one question why did you choose the rom that you did vs. others?
Mine hung at the waiting 5 seconds because windows sucks
No need for a goldcard. Goldcards are when you downgrade using an RUU.
And I don't understand the part about not using ROM Manager. It works just fine for me.
I'll be grabbing one next week as my first android device, Question from the android super noob. This does not sim unlock correct?

Are you going to use the phone on a orange network? If so then there is no need to unlock the phone. Just need to root the phone.

You can use it if you want just don't apply the recovery image if it asks or you will overwrite the custom one.

slimdizzy,
assuming you did this in windows, what driver/device shows up in device manager when your at the fastboot usb and hboot usb, are they different or the same?
Thanks for the guide. Seems to work well, but I have a couple of issues.
Firstly, after booting into recovery using the needed recovery image - the phone will not ever boot back into that recovery mode.... if I try to use Rom Manager to boot into Recovery mode it will hang and I have to remove battery. So the only way I can get into that recovery mode is by using unrevoked each time.
This issue is probably related to my next one - is when I tried to install Cyanogen (thanks for the recommendation) - it applied in the recovery mode okay, rebooted, and then got to the Cyanogen / Android load screen... and hanged for about 45 min before I decided to remove battery.
Anyway, do we have to partition the SD card? Any other tips or suggestions are appreciated.

Are you plugged in with the usb cord still? This is why i was having problems booting into recovery.
Got it working after a bunch of times. What did it was choosing the "Factory Reset" from the clockwork recovery; rebooting - and it loaded up Cyanogen almost immediately.

I stated that I use OS X and Ubuntu 10.04, so no drivers needed. Might I suggest downloading a live CD of Ubuntu that you can boot into and use it for flashing?
Somewhere else in this development forum there is a thread with drivers for windows apart from just the htc sync drivers.

You could also install VirtualBox and create a virtual machine running Linux. Very handy to have.
I do it the other way. I run Linux and have a Windows XP virtual machine that I use for GPS stuff.
Same deal in linux just sits waiting at waiting for device (htc splash screen)
didnt see the error log in the terminal
Errror: N = -1 , errno = 19 (No such device)
i rooted my htc inspire and then i tried to install the custom rom. when i go to rom manager and click on the recovery mode (2nd option) it doesn't work. then i do it manually. i try it once and nothing happens and so i try it again and the screen comes up. I want the second option, the recovery but when i move down with the down volume key, it goes straight to the hboot option then asks if i want to update. Why won't it let me do the recovery option?

Make sure you hit "Flash Clockworkmod Recovery" first. It'll take a sec to do it's thing. Put the ROM on your SD, go to Install From SD, find the rom zip and it will automatically take you into recovery mode (I would recommend wiping everything first [dalvik cache/data] - make sure to make a backup tho!) then choose install zip from sd card.
Moved as not development.
Sounds like there's still a PD98IMG.zip on your SD card. Mount your SD as a disk drive and see if you find this file on your SD, if you do, get rid of it. Any time there's a PD98IMG.zip on your SD, HBoot will automatically try to install it. If there's not a PD98IMG.zip there, it should allow you to select recovery.
And as constantschange said, make sure you have already flashed clockworkmod recovery through ROM Manager
thanks guys you have really helped me out. I did delete the zip from the sd card and i flashed the clockwork recovery through rom manager. But i ran inrto another problem. Now i can go into recovery but when i select it the screen turns black (the screen also turns black when i tried to boot into recovery mode from rom manager - which is why i have to manually root it) and i cant turn the phone off so i take the battery out. So how do i fix that??

i bought my phone from a shop called cex here in the uk i enjoyed my nexus i9020 till the power button stopped working i got it exchanged for a i9023 but the phone does not boot up and is stuck on the google part of the boot up where the lock is if your unlock the bootloader. normally i have to boot it though adb which is a hassle is there anyway to fix this ?
I donot know how to fix it completely but it is probably because you don't have any software or system on the phone which is whta happened to my brother's phone. I recommend getting help tto install an android system update manually (google search) and install it using recovery, install from sd card and choose the android system file zip.
Good Luck!

Try entering the fastboot mode by pressing and holding both Vol up and power button once there .. scroll down to recovery with volume down and press the power button on recovery ... once u see the triangle with exclamation mark in center... press but not hold power and volume up (might take a few tries)...once in recovery see if the phone has a Restore on it... if it does.. you are one lucky S.O.B lol

Since he can't boot Android there's only one (two if you count Odin) option.
unlock bootloader via fastboot.
flash cwm recovery from bootloader menu with adb.
format everything with cwm recovery.
download any rom for your device, eg the stock one from the sticky in general section.
mount usb storage (remember to mount /sdcard first).
copy rom onto storage, unmount storage, install zip from sdcard. done.

still does not work
After seeing this issue quite a few times this past week I thought I make a tutorial on how to possibly fix this. If any of you see any errors or any way to improve this guide please let me know and ill include it and or adjust accordingly
Note-Make sure you have plenty of battery. You don’t want your phone dying in the middle of flashing a PD98IMG
If you are stuck in Hboot and have S-On or don't have access to an adapter go straight to Alternate method at the end
Rename to PD98IMG
Recovery: http://1drv.ms/1ke30zE
Inspire 4g pre-rooted Rom: http://db.tt/DCU3oW39 (only use if you have S-off)-
Inspire 4g stock Rom: http://1drv.ms/1ke3ohy
Telus DHD Rom: http://min.us/mTqXM8fTY
Reinstalling Recovery
For whatever reason you have wiped your custom recovery (My guess is you did a factory reset, thus erasing it). Personally I would try this first as one can go straight to a custom rom. If you don't want a custom rom feel free to go to the next section.
1) Back up anything you don’t want deleted from your sd card
2) Plug in sd card into computer through an adapter of some kind or another phone
3) Reformat the Sd Card to Fat32 – Do a full reformat not a quick
4) Once reformat is complete place the file downloaded from the first link on the sd card
5) Eject the sd card from computer and insert into phone
6) Power off phone by pulling the battery
7) Reinsert the battery
8) Boot into bootloader by pressing volume down and power button
9) It will scan for the file press volume up to accept update
10) It will ask you to reboot- you will still be stuck which is normal-
11) If everything is going to plan you now have access to recovery. So now we need to flash a rom. (Remember to delete the pd98 as it will prevent you from going into recovery)Skip down to the flashing rom section if you don’t know how to. If flashing the recovery didn't work continue to the next section
Reinstalling Recovery With No Card Reader
1) Download recovery above and place it in your fastboot directory
2) Boot into Hboot
3) Connect your phone to your PC
4) Select fastboot
5) Open up command prompt and CD to your Fastboot directory
6) Run the command fastboot erase cache
7) After the OK run fastboot oem rebootRUU
8) You'll see a new screen with HTC logo and a progress bar. here you need to run fastboot flash zip PD98IMG.zip
9) Once it completes (should say ok,finished, or complete) run fastboot reboot bootloader
10) Go into Recovery and flash a rom
Flashing a Stock Rom
Note- If you have S-Off i recommend flashing the prerooted version
1) If coming from previous section plug in sd card and delete old file then Jump to step 5
2) Back up anything you don’t want deleted from your sd card
3) Plug in sd card into computer through an adapter of some kind or another phone
4) Reformat the Sd Card to Fat32 – Do a full reformat not a quick
5) Once reformat is complete place the stock rom on the sd card
6) Eject the sd card from computer and insert into phone
7) Power off phone by pulling the battery
8) Reinsert the battery
9) Boot into bootloader by pressing volume down and power button
10) It will scan for the file press volume up to accept update
11) If everything is going to plan you now should have a fully working phone
12) At this point you are un-rooted so if you want re-root I recommend using the ace hack kit. (unless you used a pre-rooted stock rom then no need to use hack kit)
NOTE- IF EITHER FLASHING THE STOCK ROM OR RECOVERY PD98 FILES HAVE NOT WORKED REPEAT PROCEDURE WITH A DIFFERENT SD CARD
Flashing a Rom
1) So we were able to re-flash a custom recovery. Connect sd card to computer and delete the PD98img file
2) Download the rom of your choice and any super wipe zips if your rom needs it
3) Place file on sd card eject and reinsert onto phone
4) Boot in bootloader.
5) This time it will scan and not find any files. After it scans scroll down and select recovery.
6) You should now be in CWR. Do a full wipe (wipe data, cache, and dalvik cache-found in advanced I think
a. If recommended by your rom uses a super wipe zip. Simply choose install from sd card in CWR and select the super wipe zip
7) Now flash the rom by selecting install from sd card and choosing rom
Alternate-Flashing of RUU
This is for those that don’t have access to an adapter to place files with. This should work whether your S-on or S-Off
RUU’s: http://goo.im/ruu/ace
1) Download your RUU from above
2) Boot into Hboot
3) Connect your phone to your PC
4) Select fastboot
5) Run the RUU program

First, confirm that you can boot into Hboot. If you can, then try Gene Pole's method, but you need a SD Card reader in order to put the zip file in the card.

Otherwise you can try to boot in recovery selecting it from Hboot menu and try to flash other rom.

Don't plug in phone. Pull the battery, reinsert and quickly press and hold the volume down and power button? What happened then?
Same htc screen with 4 triangles in corners.

Hello all, have an HTC Inspire s-off h-b00t 0.85.0007. When the phone powers up, the bootloader is the only screen that comes up and is frozen. Cant use volume control or power button.
When you power it up is it booting straight into hboot? If so sounds like your volume button is stuck
Booting straight in to Hboot. He apparently did a factory reset, and when it rebooted it locked up. Cant get past step 12 of parsing the zip file for PD98IMG.zip on the root of the SD card (tried 2 2gbs, 1 1gb, and 1 8gb). 3 of the SD cards would only get to step 4 and freeze.
hboot 0.85.0007
s-off
Attached a couple of pictures, the first was from the rooted.zip and the second was from the non rooted.zip. I also attempted the recovery.zip (all named PD98IMG.zip)

Hard to understand how a hardware issue happens from applying a factory reset, not to say impossible... in my mind improbable, but what do I know. Thanks for the info.

the fact is that if you are rooted then a factory reset erases everything from your phone!! you get stuck if you don't flash other rom. If the volumen rocker is broken then you will boot always in hboot...don't actually know how the wipe happened but....did you have a PD98IMG.zip file in your sdcard??...that might explain it better...

Hmm, you should try to flahs it back to official firmware, or try to get to enable storage via cmw menu, if that doesnt work, just flash it back

You need to flash the boot.img of the ROM that is why the device will not boot into the OS. You can either use fastboot commands or flash 4 EXT Recovery and use the Smart Flash in it. Download this PG58IMG.zip and place it on the root of your SD card, you can put his SD card in your Sensation and download the file to the SD card. Jusgt make sure you move it to the root of the SD card. Then put the SD card in his Sensation and power the device on holding the volume down button down. When Hboot comes up it will detect the file and ask you if you want to flash it, press the volume up button and let it flash. Then take the SD card out of the device and press the power button to reboot the device. Next put the SD card with the ROM in the device and select recovery. When 4 EXT Recovery boots up select tools and then enable Smart Flash and then go back to the main menu and select install from sdcard thenn select choose zip fromsdcard and then select the ROM. Press yes and let the ROM flash and then reboot the device. It will flash the boot.img when it reboots and then reboot again and you should have a working device again.
