[Q] should I keep my gtablet

I bought my gtablet 2 weeks ago. I have 30 days to return the baby. Following are my questions.
1. I know lot of pundits are calling 2011 as the year of tablets. Did I jump the gun and bought it too early? gtab's spec was the reason for the buy.
2. Do you think in the future they will release firmware update to honeycomb since google doesn't recommend froyo for tablets?
3. lot of the current apps dont work.
4. you tube streaming is horrible.
5. last but not least the screen.
I appreciate the efforts of several guys on this forum for supporting the device. however I am still on the side line as far as introducing other roms on the device. so it limits my gtab to some extent.

Difficult question to answer since it ultimately depends on your expectations and personality. Viewsonic has (recently) been pretty good about releasing updates and working with the dev community here at XDA; that indicates that there is a possibility (not certainty) that they will continue to do so into the new year. The G-tablet's hardware will support Honeycomb, so it is reasonable to expect them to release an update IF Honeycomb is released within Q1 or Q2 of 2011.
If you are holding back on loading a rom, the question we need to know "why" before we can give you more meaningful advice. If you're holding off because you're considering returning the unit, that's one thing (and understandable). If, however, you are uncomfortable loading roms, that's another. All I can tell you is that the G-Tablet is a fantastic device with both VEGAn and TnTLite--much better and faster than stock TnT. I anticipate the XDA devs will probably actively develop/improve their roms for at least Q1 & Q2; probably longer if Honeycomb is released within that timeframe. We must acknowledge, however, that Viewsonic's recent updates are making strides into improving the user experience, so that remains an alternative. Bottom line: if you're willing to educate yourself on loading roms and doing the market fix, the G-Tablet is the best bargain out there currently.
As to some apps not working, some apps don't work on my HTC Evo either. The G-Tablet seems to run most apps very well. This is surprising since Froyo & Gingerbread apps aren't really designed for tablets. I see no reason to be alarmed regarding the G-Tablet's ability to run apps or play YouTube currently (which I have no problem with on TnTLite or VEGAn).
There will be better tablets released this year. For one thing, the G-Tablet's screen is poor quality when viewed at an angle. Also the front facing camera is mediocre at best. Other than those 2 issues, the hardware is very solid and will probably not be surpassed until Q3 of 2011.

no. do not keep it. i had one last week for two days (long enough to experience the latest update). its not great without the willingness to mod it by the end user.
today i bought a galaxy tab, and its exactly what i was hoping for when i bought the gtablet last week. sure, i now have a monthly data subscription, but only for the first 6 months (tmobile) and then i can drop it. and yes, i did spend more on the device... but maybe thats why the viewsonic product was so bad, because its an entry model device based on awful software and flimsy hardware (mine creaked).
the samsung has everything i was looking for... android market, swype, youtube, flash, etc. etc. etc... its just awesome.
dont wait too long to return. youll be sorry.

No one can answer that question for you, it is for you to decide. Not even the above poster's answer is valid - except for him and his experience. I also tried the Galaxy Tab and I hated it. Yes, much nicer screen, but the seven inch size was a no go for me. Everyone's needs and experience is different so don't do anything based on what someone here tells you to do.
If you feel up to mod'ing the G you can end up with a nicely functioning tablet, albeit with a screen that has a lousy viewing angle, but, on the other hand for a lot less money than other alternatives.
I am a total noob to Android and went to the irc chat room for the G and someone there walked me through the rom change. I now have a nice unit, runs smoothly, fairly fast and its doing what I need it to do. It still has a lousy screen viewing angle but I also have an extra few hundred bucks in my pocket that I didn't have to put out for a Galaxy that I didn't like.
Ultimately it has to be your decision. There are a number of people in here who are willing to help out if you want to take advantage of their help.

Take it back quickly. Get the Galaxy Tab......wait...didnt I just hear they are locking down the bootloader on it. No Gingerbread or Honeycomb unless Samsung lets you have it. So it has the the potential of being outdated already. But seriously, if your having 2nd thoughts about a purchase....RETURN IT!!!! It's your money. Why would anything we have to say have any bearing on your remorse.

If you're having buyers remorse already then I would say return it. Usually when someone asks a question like that they have issues or gripes with the device. This tablet has the hardware to be great and the software is catching up to it. There is a decent backing behind the product and that's a great thing. As for the screen users have been running tests with other screens to try and find an alternative.
For me I personally love modding my device to make it my own. If you're the type of person that wants a complete out of the box working tablet then I would return it.

I don't think any of the tabs out today has an advantage over the other. If ur gonna return the gtablet, don't get anything else that's out right now. I would just wait a few months. Or at least wait til the prices drop on the alternative tablets.
As other posters has said, u haven't seen the capabilities of this tablet without flashing a rom or modifying the stock ui.

No I don't think u bought it too early because tegra 2 tabs are gonna be expensive next yr albeit they will probably have better screens and camera. You just purchased a tablet with next years hottest cpu at a pretty fair price.
Yes, viewsonic has earned my trust that they will update this device. I also have the utmost confidence in our current devs to bring us faster roms.
All the apps I have works. If ur talking about the g sensor games then I would agree but that's not a lot of apps.
You tube streaming is super fast on my vegan tab. Other flash sites too! Especially justin tv. I have a wireless n router and when I stream from those sites no stutter at all.
And the screen...umm no comment lol.
Overall, I'm happy with my purchase and u should be too unless u got extra money to spend and/orthe patience to wait til next yr.

Thanks everyone. I am not new to android. Mt3g and currently vibrant. But never flashed a rom. So nervous. Things I like are hardware and no contract. On top of that I got it for 30% off. So really a bargain. But I offset it by buying extended warranty.
Called viewsonic cs but that number is not working. Tried 4 times, after the automated voice and 10 mins hold the call disconnects and it got me concerned.

Funny, I can say the same things about my GTablet. Granted, it's maybe 95%-98% of the Market, and I had to tinker with it, but I'm a big boy who likes to tinker.
Unfortunately, the devs here have taken away some of the fun by making it so easy to download and flash the rom.
But hey, glad you are enjoying your Galaxy Tab. And if you were so unhappy with your GTablet, stop trolling the GTablet forums.

ill rephrase for the sensitive folks... some people need (or want) the device to work out of the box, no changes required. the gtablet just isnt that device.
in an increasingly crowded marketplace where devices are getting better and better at launch, a device like the gtab takes a backseat for out of the box readiness. yes, you can mod till youre blue in the face and get it to do most of what others do from the get go, but having to mod to get it almost there is not optimal for every user.
and to the other deflating comment, i love XDA and i will troll whatever forums and whenever i wish... pardon me for posting an opinion in a public forum.

I was also worried I made a bad decision with my gtab purchase a week ago as well. I came in to an unexpected $400 and decided to treat myself to a gtablet. The day after I got it I flashed the vegan 3 rom. That fixed the "bad software" issue for sure. The my only concern was with the screen. But my worry was 2 fold: 1) viewing angles. 2) "fuzzy" graphics. I'm used to my Droid X having razor sharp fonts and graphics, which the gtab does not. Part of the problem is the screen quality which is related to the viewing angle. I think the bigger part has to do with resolution. The gtab resolution is 1024 x600 pixels @ 10.1" while the Droid X is 854 x 480 @ 4.3". Packing 66% of the pixels into 42% of the screen size helps make things sharper.
So I'm now at the point where I'll keep the gtab. I'm not 100% satisfied, but it's pretty damn good. Maybe there will be luck with finding a better LCD that can be dropped in. If next year a better tegra 2 tablet comes out, then I might just switch and sell my gtab on ebay. I won't get what I paid for it, but I'm hoping to get at least $250 for it. I would have gotten $130 worth of use out of it.
As for flashing a new rom; It is really easy to do with the proper instructions. I had not done any rom flashing since I have a droid x, and was kinda reluctant as well. But now I look back and realize there really wasn't anything to be nervous over. Most of the "caution, you may brick your device" warnings you read are similar to the medical wavers you sign that say "you might die" even though you are just getting some teeth pulled. Yes, it can happen. But most of the time everything works out fine.

I think you would need to be happy with it the way it is today to keep it. There are no guarantees that it will get any further updates from VS. In fact it really seems like a product that they had branded just for the holidays.
I'm still undecided about mine, but I suspect that once I see what comes out of CES, the gtablet will probably go back to Sears.

Sam, I agree with the people who've said that noone can tell you. As someone who prefers not to mod myself, I am right there with you in feeling out the insecurities of dropping a chunk of change on something that may or may not be faulty in relation to actual hardware or that's shaky in terms of future software releases and support. The thing is, in a case like this, we're all early adopters here....and the problem with cookie cutter devices like the G Tablet (cookie cutter meaning the same base hardware as a plethora of devices coming soon) is that it really doesn't get a whole lot of respect in terms of software from the people that sell it because at the end of the the day, they're in it for the money like all companies are but more so they're not all about loyalty or trying to keep customers. If they can get you to keep your device for 30 days - that's money in their pocket no matter what.
That is the raw, real truth of the matter. I have certainly had my own ups and downs with it but unless there's a DEEP hardware issue - I'm not seeing a reason to return mine. If you REALLY don't want to mess around with ROMs and 3389 (newest OTA) isn't satisfactory for you, then I'd say return it. Something faster and better will always be on the horizon, and if you keep returning or waiting for the next best thing, you end up with nothing. And we'll always have buyers remorse, believe me...there's always a reason to return a buy.
At this point, we have no guarantees that Viewsonic will support it beyond Froyo. They have never claimed, nor said they would and when it comes to devices like this. That's a cold hard fact. They're dabbling in the tablet waters, and if it doesn't 'work out' for them they could just decide to call it quits in terms of releasing updates and supporting it. Even if they do decide to go ahead and jump into the market, when they release new equipment we don't really have anyone at viewsonic saying "don't worry, your tablet will be upgraded for as long as it can be". We just have to hope and have faith.
I would say, if you really don't want to nor see yourself modding your tablet. Even in the lightest, then maybe it isn't the device for you. Get an iPad...where you know Apple has a vested interest and will release updates for it as long as it can be updated. But if you see yourself dabbling, even a little bit (it really is pretty easy and for the most part safe), then I believe 100% that this tablet is going to be a powerhouse next year when honeycomb hits (barring any unforeseen internal hardware faults currently).
To Nexus, you've made a point in that the Galaxy Tab IS indeed a great device and workable right out of the box but there are pretty big differences which make them very different. I also think that yes, it is preferable to the G Tablet for people who want that out of the box usefulness. But is the Galaxy Tab a value, I really don't think so. Quite simply, you're paying a lot more for a lot less.
Kind of like buying a VW Bug with great insides vs. a VW Touareg with some glitchy insides (that are quite possibly fixable in the near future).
For one, the Galaxy Tab is single core - meaning right now what you see is what you get. The G Tablet will have new doors opened when Honeycomb allows the second core to be utilized synchronously (I think? and hope). The Galaxy Tab is a 7inch device which by all means is a big difference than the 10inch G Tablet. I have used 7inch devices and they feel like really big phones. Still quite usable and maybe even preferable by some, but not all. The G Tablet feels like flat computer in comparison and the bigger screen is obviously noticeable. The Galaxy Tab is $200 more than the G Tablet without a contract. It is $350 with a contract, but you must have data on the account for, you say 6 months, right? That's still a minimum of $530. Is the G Tablet perfect, no way. But by all means it's great hardware with great potential for a value price right now. The Galaxy Tab on the other hand, is a great out of the box experience fit for anyone out there, but lacking the power and potential of the G Tablet - better screen? sure...but not necessarily a better buy.
Coming from owning a Vibrant, maybe I'm a little biased, but I wouldn't be too sure Samsung will be paying attention to the Tab for too long into next year, especially when the new hotness the Galaxy Tab 2 is released....and all this talk about locking bootloaders etc. I dunno. I feel better that even if VS takes a dump and refocuses elsewhere, at least the devs here will be taking care of us for a while.

30% off!!!! U lucky son of a gun haha. Well that makes the gtab a great buy. I'm jealous.

I was disapointed until Loaded Vegan and did the calibaration fix,also practically bricked it and had to load ubuntu linux cuz windows driver would not work but now i am very happy this thing is so fast!
And mind you the software is not optimized for Dual core processor.
Definately not for the none tech inclined.But if you are willing to root and want a solid Android device this is it!
I could get a galaxy tab but why would i pay for internet i can tether off my evo for free.

Completely agree with you. The Galaxy Tab is, in fact, the closest thing to an Android tablet that works out of the box.
Anyone buying an Android tablet before June 2011 is basically an early adopter. If you want something that Just Works(tm), your best bet is to go the premium route and get a Galaxy Tab. If you don't have the money and don't want a service contract, you're going to have to do some hacking in some way, shape or form to get things working.
And yeah, I can be a crabby ***** sometimes.

question about buying a tablet

Hi peeps been looking around at the android tablets on the market and wondering if i should take the plunge?.Thought i would ask here as you guys probably have more experiance than most.Can you recomend a couple?, i'm not looking to spend a fortune just want something that covers most bases and doesnt struggle to run the usual suspects.HDMI out would be a plus but any ideas you can offer or just give me ideas on what not to buy.Any helps good, thanx in advance.

I have a smoldering interest in a tablet as well but I will continue to hold off as my Lenovo X61t and Windows Phone compliment each other pretty well and I don't "need" one.
However, I have taken note of the Archos' that were just released. The general feeling is that they feel cheap in build quality but the price and performance is right there. This is engadgets take on the two tablets they have.

I have used the Samsung Galaxy S and it is a nice device. Gotta be honest though, nothing seems to be "more complete than the ipad", just in terms of docks, jailbreaking, best apps, etc.
There are so many 'knock offs' in this category, let us know what you find!

I agree in the upset front, it's a great piece of kit but I refuse to spend that kind if money. Have found plenty of cheap ones, and I don't mind the price tag but most are just a bit gutless lol. But yeah likewise bring the info if you find something good.

Buying a new tablet
I'm in the market for a tablet, and have taken my sweet time for the last 3 months researching and looking for the best one to buy. I've done my fair share of research and now i'm asking you: Should I buy the ASUS Transformer Prime with the dock, od should i wait for samsung/htc/moto/lenovo/acer... next-gen tablet? My fear is you see, that I'll buy The Prime, and that it won't be supported by some software develeopers, and left out in the cold with some apps, or not on par with the next-gen 2012 tablets. I want the best hardware specs, possible future windows 8 compatibility, preferably tegra device, 3g isn't a must, nor GPS but preferred. I don't mind waiting for a few more months since this would be my first tablet, wich i don't really need. NO IOS/IPad talk please, android tablet only (but like i said, with a possibility of win8 in the future). Any reasonable advice is more than welcome, and thank you all very much in advance!

IIRC Asus Prime will begin getting ICS/4.0 Jan 12th.
With that said, I would definitely play around with one before buying. Numerous reported issues that can't really be fixed through OTA's or software. (GPS, WIFI, light bleed, glass/screen loose from rest of tab).
Typical Asus if you ask me, crapshoot on quality.
Also depends on what you want in a tab. If you don't really want to play around/mod/customize then I think the Ipad 2 or hold out a couple of months for an Ipad 3 would be your best bet.
If you have to have an Android you have one of two options. Wait for more quad core tabs to be released, or start looking at what's available now.
Samsung 7.0 Plus is probably the best out for 7"ers.
For the 10"ers it's a toss up right now. Galaxy Tab 10.1 has good support, decent performance, light, easy to hold, good screen, great speakers (for a tab). It's cons to me are the Tegra 2 isn't up to snuff with Honeycomb OS.
The HP Touchpad is a great buy for the OS and specs, and can also be ported to Android (Still need to play with one)
Asus Transformer TF101 is also a good buy but again a crapshoot on quality but can be had for a good price.
The new Moto Xyboards are getting good reviews but they are overpriced for what they are, are only sold through VZW and were "technically" outdated before they were even released. Also locked bootloaders are never fun if flashing kernels are your thing.
Right now I'm looking at getting another tab so I guess you could say I'm in the same boat as you. I have an OG Galaxy Tab 7 on the way b/c I got it cheaper than cheap and just wanna play with it.
Considering picking up an 8" Xyboard also.
ETA: I probably won't pick up a Xyboard however until they come down in price or a WiFi only version is offered.
The SGT 7.7 also sounds promising. Decisions decisions.

As for ASUS's build quality, like I said I never owned a tablet so I definately will try out/play with one for a couple of hours before purchasing, and watch out for the screen bleed on an ips display. But currently most of my pc's componens (2xmobo, 2xgraphic cards, and a lappy) are ASUS made and i must say i'm more than satisfied with them, and as I recall, when I was buying my SGSII there was talk about screen burn-in, overheating and wifi problems too, but I haven't had a single one with my device. Besides that, I don't really need GPS or 3g in a tablet so it's not a dealbreaker with me on The Prime.
The problem is: I wouldn't buy any other tablet now existing in the market, mostly because of the Tegra3 chipset The Prime has, so if I'm paying a hi-end device (around 700$) i want the latest and fastest performer in the ring. And yes, in my book that is android only, as i find apple's devices a bit limiting sometimes (without any fanboyism, I come from a long line of iphones before my android). The things I'm worried hardware-wise are: the amount and speed of Prime's RAM (1gb od ddr2), possible wifi signal problems, screen bleed, and that it's topheavy when docked (a minor thing really). I love that it has a full USB 2.0 port, so you don't need a jack/ adapter of some kind (e.g. like on a SGSII microUSB to full USB). Not really worried about the one speaker layout eather, altough i was a bit dissapointed since the TF101 had a stereo layout, but still, not a dealbreaker (hey, it's still a tablet)...
Now you may laugh at this seeing your sig, but in my mobile history (25+ phones) the worst were accually motorolas (v3 being the worst of the lot, but than again A925 was more than excellent) I'm not so fond of HP either, last month i sold my DV6 3020em, (that's the i7 touchscreen version for Europe since i'm european), and i can say it was utter rubbish, overheating, shoddy build quality, squeaky, noisy fans, you name it... That's why I sold it, but it had a touchscreen which was more than handy, and that's why i want a tablet, I just might look a bit more into the HP touchpad after all.
Acer is great quality for it's price, really great. But I only had Acer's laptops, and the Iconia tablet is as ugly as a bullfrog from chernobyl, so I wouldn't want one.
Tf101 is ugly too by my standards, too big as well, but the looks aren't so important if it was an excellent performer, which none of the now available androids are compared to The Prime (at least not on honeycomb).
I played with samsung 8.9 a few days ago and I can report is't a great little device, thin, capable, satisfying all in all, but i'd like a bigger screen, and a real keyboard and it's not a tegra device (I play a lot of games so i'd like the tegra zone, as chainfire's plugins don't support all tegra tweaked games)
Now I do like to install a new ROM every few weeks on my SGSII but i srsly don't think that will be the case on a tablet (except Win 8, when it comes out).
So i guess the question remains: should i wait for Samsung's next gen 10.1 answer or just go with the prime now

Don't jump the gun on the Prime until stock has settled in, right now retailers are price gouging due to low availability. The Prime should be $500 for the 32GB, $600 for the 64GB, not $650-700 for the 32GB.
I have a Transformer and an Iconia Tab A100, and I can tell you from first hand experience that the build quality isn't nearly as bad as the above poster is making it out to be. I actually like the finish on both the original Transformer and the Iconia series a lot, and the Prime seems to be a winner also. Another thing to consider for both ASUS and Acer is that they keep their Android releases relatively 'vanilla' except for a few bloatware-type apps of their own, unlike Samsung and HTC, who just can't help themselves but smear TouchWiz and Sense over everything they produce.
The only real reported issue with the Prime appears to be the GPS accuracy, but at least to me, it's a non-issue, since I disable GPS and bluetooth on everything.
The Windows 8 bit is yet to be seen, porting a device to another OS is something you can hope, but never hold your breath for. We've yet to see how Windows 8 distribution is going to work and remember that even if you do install Windows 8 down the road, it doesn't mean that you'll be able to run all windows-based programs, since mobile devices use ARM CPUs, and everything written for windows right now is made for x86 CPUs, so it will be up to each third party to rewrite their programs for compatibility.
Although I would never write out a company with pockets as deep as microsoft, they have proven time and time again that they are unable to compete in the mobile segment, so I don't see Windows 8 with as much hope and awe as many others do. (Especially since Ice Cream Sandwich is the first Android iteration we can really call "excellent")
TL;DR - If you can find a Prime for a decent price, then it's an amazing device to be had for a very reasonable price. If you plan on waiting, then checking out the upcoming Iconia A700 isn't a bad idea either if the dock isn't that important to you.

I have a Transformer and an Iconia Tab A100, and I can tell you from first hand experience that the build quality isn't nearly as bad as the above poster is making it out to be. I actually like the finish on both the original Transformer and the Iconia series a lot, and the Prime seems to be a winner also. Another thing to consider for both ASUS and Acer is that they keep their Android releases relatively 'vanilla' except for a few bloatware-type apps of their own, unlike Samsung and HTC, who just can't help themselves but smear TouchWiz and Sense over everything they produce.
The only real reported issue with the Prime appears to be the GPS accuracy, but at least to me, it's a non-issue, since I disable GPS and bluetooth on everything.

Tnx for the reply, and I have to say I think you misunderstood me. I don't think I said anything bad about acer's or asus's build quality just HP's (and only the perticular model of the DV6 I had), just that they're a bit on the ugly side, but that's totally a subjective stand, and irrelevant to anybody else.
As far as Prime's price goes, it should be available in Croatia, about 2hrs drive from my home in 10days for less than 700$ with the dock for the 32gig version, which is not a bad pricetag considering where I live, and I'm ready to give that kind of money for it. The dock is accually something i like about the Transformer, and it would probbably be a dead heat between TF101 just because of the dock) and the Sammy 10.1 if it weren't for the prime.
GPS, like I said, I don't mind. The SGSII has a great GPS reciever which i hardly ever use, maybe 6 times since i got it in july.
As far as ARM windows goes, I know what to expect from it , nothing special, but it would be nice to have that option when it's available
So you are happy with the TF101 and the Iconia? But would you recommend buying now the Prime if I'm happy with the price? I should mention I probbably won't buy it before ICS, and I'll try to get a hold of a stock ICS one when it's out after Jan. 12. because I want to make sure i missed the first version shipment

I believe you about Motorola. Until my Droid X I have ALWAYS hated Motorola. I never had a phone that worked right after some wear and tear and always had problems. From before smartphones thru the Droid 1, 2, and 3. (Went through multiples of those). I'm also a Samsung and HTC fan.
I've never had a problem with Asus computer components myself, w/ that said, there are quite a few complaints when it comes to the TF201 on quality. With that said, you, as I'm sure you do, have to take into account the dissatisfied ones are always going to moan and groan much more and louder than the happy customer.
I guess I just wish it was like cars when it comes to Tablets and would love for them to let me take the exact tab I'm looking to buy for a test drive. (Not leave the store but just open the box and get a good look at it and test everything to make sure I'm getting what my hard earned money is paying for).
I really want a TF201, but I'm going to wait til a few more Tegra 3 tabs come out. I really think Motorola would have hit a homerun if they would have put a quad core in their Xyboards and kept the price what they're charging now.
The three tabs I'm really torn between right now are the Xyboard 8.2, TF201, and Samsung 7.0 Plus. But man we are so close to seeing quad core as the new standard for tabs so the other part of me just wants to sit it out and wait.

Personally for me it's no competition between the Prime and other tablets, the Prime is just on another planet.
This morning the store answered my email saying that the Prime will be available mid january (in about 10 days) and said that maybe they could reserve one for me because of the small supply, but said the price may be different depending on the usd/euro stocks, but under 700$ for the 32gig version with dock...
Still I'm not planning on buying one before a test drive like you said (mostly to check for screen bleed). And yes, I took into account the moaners which is true like you said again...
I think I wathched every single review/comparison of the tablet on youtube, and read at least 10 reviews online, and it's all mostly positive.
I'll update as soon as i get my hands on a test one, hopefully in about 10 days.

[Q] Getting a Xoom?

I'm looking to get a Android tablet and my only choices really are the Xoom or the as yet unreleased Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1v. I was wondering what was the general consensus, is it better to wait for the Galaxy Tab 10.1v or get a Xoom now. Obviously the choice is personal etc. however if I got the Tab it would be the UK version not the new updated version and the reason why this bothers me is I like to root and mess about etc. Which is why I'm asking here, I have a Nexus S and so I am drawn to the Xoom because its another 'flagship' device for android and as with the Nexus S I imagine there is a lot of developers behind it - this is a major plus for me between the Tab 10.1v and Xoom. Which is why if there are different versions of the Tab this would slow/hamper development plus as its not the flagship device future software updates don't seem as certain as they do for the Xoom. I know the general specs - the Xoom being slightly heavier and thicker buts its mainly the software and development which concerns me. I know this sounds vague but to me it seems that the Xoom is the logical choice development wise but every time I look at the Galaxy Tab 10.1v and read about a small niggle with the Xoom, such as the lock button, it makes me wonder and hesitate.
Secondly, I'm currently travelling through Malaysia, Singapore and then onto Oz and Nz. I was thinking of getting the WiFi only Xoom in Kuala Lumpur as the prices I have seen are cheaper than in the UK, I was just wondering this wouldn't be a problem - as in its not a different version as compared to a UK WiFi only Xoom. (Also if anyone knows KL well, where is the easiest Courts store to get to from a tourists point of view to get a Xoom?)

The trouble is that few people have experience at this point with multiple Honeycomb tablets.
If you are basing your decision solely on the issue that the Xoom is a "flagship" product remember that Google is fickle, and have already stated that the Honeycomb tablet variant of Android is basically a deadend. If they are serious about Ice Cream Sandwich being one version for all devices, there may not be a second wave of Honeycomb tablets and certainly not a third. As far as official Honeycomb versions, 3.1 may well be the last. In that case, there will be a new flagship tablet by the end of the year, one designed around Ice Cream Sandwich.
However, its current flagship status likely means that the Xoom DOES have a better chance for an official ICS upgrade then some other tablets being released now.
I completely agree with you that the real rival to the Xoom on the Honeycomb field is the Samsung Tab 10.1. Both the Asus Transformer and Acer Aconia fell behind in my opinion on build quality and physical quirks (which is consistent with my experiences with both Asus and Acer...too many corners cut and compromises made). The Transformer does have a price edge, but I got the impression that, like me, you are not looking for the budget model, but the best model. Both the Xoom and the Tab series also have active modding communities, which don;t really exist (at least not yet) for the Transformer and the Aconia.
So how do the front runners measure up? Well, the Samsung Tab 10.1 appears from the specs and reports to have a slightly better screen than the Xoom, and this makes sense as my Galaxy S i9000's AMOLED is the best screen I have ever had on a mobile device, bar none. Since Samsung's bread and butter products are screens and NAND, this makes sense.
However, Motorola has always succeeded (or failed) mainly on overall design, and this is where I feel the Xoom shines over the Samsung Tab (I have worked with a Tab 7 inch and the form factor of the 10.1 seems to be identical, just bigger). The Tab felt wrong in my hands, somehow awkward and angular. The Xoom, on the other had, has a very substantial yet organic feeling to it. I enjoy holding it and carrying it. The design and the attention to detail of the Xoom simply works for me. For example, the fact that the power button is on the back and slightly recessed, which some users hate, is a case in point. It feels natural that it is there to me, and I really like the fact that it is out of the way. The build quality overall is truly excellent, it feels like a luxury device where the Tab felt to me far more functional.
I am sure they are both excellent devices, and I may pick up one of the Tab 10.1 devices to tinker with the hardware and out of some newfound loyalty to Samsung...however for now the Xoom is my mobile office of choice. If you were able to handle both, side by side for a little while, I have a feeling you would agree.
And as far as I know, it is pronounced Zoom...at least that is how I say it. As the word looks more like Klingon than English, I could of course be wrong.

Yes another worry is Ice Cream Sandwich, for my Nexus S its not a worry as I know it will be supported and updated so on that front its all good but yes when ICS comes out they could quite well release a new tablet - which is the main problem in the tech industry as soon as you buy a new better model comes out and it seems even more apparent with android!
Part of me thinks get a Xoom will be fine with updates etc and then everytime I look at the tab 10.1 or read about ICS I hesitate. Rather frustrating!
Part of me thinks just jump in! And if I come across a Xoom whilst in Kuala Lumpur I will probably buy it.

Hey man...
I recently bought the xoom (zoom) this saturday 6/4/11 and I was racking my brains on which to buy...same as you...and I went for the xoom for these few reasons...
Motorola made a great Android phone (Droid) and the build of it was really solid and sturdy. I tried to intentionally scratch the screen with a tack, keys, nail, sharp things and it simply would not scratch. +1 for that...The build quality of the D1 was great...really really sturdy. I was looking at an upgrade for my cellphone back in Dec and almost went with Samsung...but the build quality was a bit plasticy...so I waited..got the Tbolt...these few things about the D1 sold me on the xoom...but not fully.
When comparing the two devices I saw some pros that the xoom had, I felt took the cake. Expansion SD Card slot...Vanilla honeycomb...and different outputs i.e hdmi ect...I had to go with the one that was more bang for my buck so to speak.
After using it for almost 2 days now...I love the weight of the xoom...Its very very very solid, just like my D1. I love the screen, I love the usefulness of the device and I love everything about it!
It looks great, feels great, and operates fantastic. I should say that I got the wifi version and really love the thing man...if I were you...go XOOM!

Some things not mentioned
a) Have to hack to get the sd card working
b) The Samsung 10.1 does not have an AMOLED screen. Therefore cannot be listed as an advantage.
Although some have claimed that the tab does have a better screen. Not sure. But I have heard that the tab has bleed through light on the sides. Again not sure.

Transformer Infinity Users!

New forum for this brand-spanking-new device? Why don't we introduce ourselves and start off the t700 community the right way?

I've been a fairly active member of the Epic 4G Touch community here on XDA. I'm a rising senior at Kutztown University of Pennsylvania, and I've been waiting for a solid android tablet to replace my first generation iPad as my note-taking, homework-on-the-go, etc device. Planning on getting my t700 when it's released in a couple weeks (hopefully) and getting down with some custom ROMs!

I was really active in the HTC Fuze forum up until I got a iphone 4. I used to have a ipad for note taking and etc, but I always felt like it lacked something. Since the first generation ipad is now officially "obsolete" and wont be receiving any new updates or apps, I have decided to give android a go this time around.
Anyways I got to demo a TF300 today at Office Depot and I have to say I am fairly confident I will be happy with the Infinity. Assuming the higher pixel density does not impact the performance much.

I joined XDA last march when I got my Motorola Atrix, but I didnt really become an active member here until I got my Nook Color last June and loaded CM7 on it. A few months later the HP Touchpad firesale hit, resulting in me selling the Color for it. In retrospect getting the TP was a mistake, since it ruined 7" tablets for me (and thus now the Nexus 7) and started having some hardware issues that resulted in an on-going fight with HP's repair services. That's a long story though, and not one for here.
What is relevant is, to make up for the disaster that was the Touchpad I decided to get a TF300. Right as I was about to buy it though, rumors started flying around on the TF700 launching late June which made me decide to hold off. When the actual launch date and pricing were announced, I was somewhat caught off guard since it was cheaper than I expected.
As such, I'll be picking up a 32GB model with a dock (which I thought I wouldn't be able to afford given rumored pricing), running it rooted stock for about a month for warranty purposes and then loading it with CM9 and a Linux chroot. It'll replace my Touchpad as a light and portable way to take notes during classes as well as general couch surfing and lightweight productivity like writing papers, code, email etc.

Looks like we're both victims of ancient iPads lol

I joined XDA after getting an HTC Touch HD (Windows Mobile), then an HTC Desire HD (Android).
I started wanting a tablet about a year ago, but no Android model really seduced me, and anything by apple is a big NO. I got interested in the first Transformer and in the Prime, but the issues encountered by their users told me to wait.
Since the Infinity was announced, I have decided it would be the tablet to have.

I have been leeching on XDA for a pretty while, but became a more or less active member January last year when my LG O2x arrived. It was replaced by my tried-and-true SGS2 about half a year later (and donated to my then-fiancée -- I have flashed pretty much every custom ROM that came out, and have settled on SLIM for now).
I was looking for a tablet that could entertain me on my rather long commute to work (work shift-based in a hospital, with somewhere between 4.5 and 6 hours of (mostly train-based) commute per shift) -- before I mostly read on my e-reader; now, in addition, I browse the web and watch documentaries (or the incidental movie).
I got the TF700 before the actual release date (retail) and I am very happy with it. I must say that I am curious if the performance boost with a custom ROM will becomparable to that which I've seen on my SGS2. If so, then let me first brace myself, for it probably will knock my socks off.

Hi tf700 enthusiasts! I just pre-ordered my infinity from j&r and almost have gone completely insane with waiting months for the official release in USA.
I have never had a Tablet, and I am a bit nervous of any large monetary purchases. I was hoping to write my first post here with the knowledge that you guys here would provide great opinions, information, and support!

Hi smoshua, welcome to XDA! If you can cope with the occasional irate developer and intellectually blunt users, you'll be fine in here. I hope you haven't been diappointed already ('"you were hoping to write you first post... you guys would provide ... information and support"), hahaha!
As far as the price goes: yes, the TF700 is quite an expensive device, but you should also remember you are buying the best-specced Android tablet today. No better way to increase e-peen length that that.

Decided I wanted this tablet because it's a beast...and I need something to take to class and write notes on (the dismal battery life on my laptop makes that difficult...it's too powerful for it's own good ). I also really want something light to carry around as a mostly laptop replacement since this thing gets pretty heavy carrying around...I'll keep it for more power hungry tasks and long writing sessions.

I´ve been using Android on both phone and tablet since August ´10 with the htc desire (currently running miui) and August ´11 with the tf101 (running Revolver). I´m atm selling my tf101 on ebay and bought my tf700 last week.
To be honest i´m a bit disappointed in the overall performance of the tf700 which feels almost identical of the tf101´s (which is a bit laggy sometimes) but maybe that will go away.
What would excite me to no end would be Ubuntu 12.04 or 12.10 running on the tf700.

I owned a Transformer Prime and ended up selling it on Ebay, but kept the keyboard with the intent of reusing it with the TF700.
My impressions so far with the TF700 are positive. GPS was important to me and I am pleasantly surprised by how much it has been improved. The strip at the top/back of the tablet looks well implemented and does not detract from the beautiful appearance of the device.
My only concerns are the I/O (slow copying of files into and out of the unit) and the jerkiness in Chrome makes it almost unusable.. probably just a setting or tweak somewhere.
Overall I am very pleased and not regretting the purchase like I did with the Prime.
If we get Jelly Bean things can only get better. :good:

Hi All,
I have been a huge fan of tablet. In fact, I started using my very first tablet which was PC by HP like 7-8 years ago. Then bought ultraportable PC Tablet. When xoom came out I jumped on it. Then I switched to the Samsung Galaxy 10.1. Then went to iPad2. Got galaxy 10.1 back for awhile (this time with 4G). In an anticipation of Transformer Infinity I ended up selling my Galaxy 10.1. I believe I have done fair share of research and personal experience of tablet. I definitely enjoy Android Tablet over iOS due to its flexibility, and believe or not some apps are better on android (at least for what I do). Samsung was just too slow in terms of updating their OS, which was one of a big negative for me. Plus the build quality of the tablet was poor. Without any major physical damage I can think of, the plastic around the port broke off. So I was not going to go with Samsung again. Having seen phenomenal speedy update of ASUS, I was going to go with Infinity except.... IO issue seems a major one. So I will hold off and see if ASUS will fix this. But in the mean time, I will keep checking this forum as otherwise I wouldn't even have known such issue existed.

Hi guys. Just like ya'll I'm standin around the beach waitin 4the launch.
Really just started messin with my 3D late April and the downgrade to get root and all that. Did the Newt rom and the ics and sense 4 were the hoot. I've gone back to stock waitin4 the official ics upgrade. Kinda fun playin around the innards of the 3D, if not abit like paintin by numbers, lol
Tablet wise I picked up the iPad2 when it came out. That was slightly before real android tablet action. I like the iPad2 but not the OS - I really feel at home with Android. I just put my iPad2(with my Apple goodies) and my AR Drone up on ebay. Figgure that'll cover most the cost of the 700 the way those iPad's hold resale value.

when I read your text I had to laugh and read it loud to to my wife ;-) had the htd touch pro 2 (Windows Mobile), now have also the htc desire hd... For also a decent time, I cant wait to finally get a tablet. Apple was a no-Go, and not good Android tablets. Then the transformers came, but i read about their problmes. So no-GO. And the Infitnity... I ordered one week ago one and i cant wait ;-)

My story is as follows
I started with a Nexus One because I was fascinated with the idea that you could change your OS on a phone. I didn't know at that time that it was already possible. I had no idea what an impact it would've on my life. But as you can imagine I got ORD quite fast.
When I owned the N1 I was a quite passive member and read a lot and just tried to learn all that stuff.
Then I bought the Nexus S and began to be a bit more active.
After the NS I bought the Galaxy S II which was my big mistake. I hate Touchwiz. CM was available though but it was always a bit buggy. So I ditched the SGSII as soon as the Galaxy Nexus came out.
With the Galaxy Nexus I started to become quite active. I'm currently a beta tester for the SLIM ICS/ Bean ROM.
And you'll see me from time to time in the CM threads because I'm really a big fan of their work.
I owned the TF101G before the TF700T. I liked it quite a bit but I came late to the game so that it was quite outdated when I bought it.
The biggest issue for me though was the low resolution. Use to the high resolution display on my GNEX it was really a pain to read on it.
That's actually the main reason why I bought the Infinity.
ATM I own just the tablet in gold but as soon as the dock is available I'll buy that too.
I'll use it mostly for reading, surfing, watching films on the go and writing my blog.

Same for me. I read through all the Prime desasters and luckily cancled my preorder before it was shipped.
Now I hope the Infinity has those things bugged out.
Can't wait till the grey version pad only is released here in Germany.
It is said to be next week.

i dont want to get something that gets outdated fast but i feel like we are buying something experimental and this fall the real gadgets come out. even if i get it now will the resale value be enough to cover my loss and upgrade to tablets with i5 processors and same weight / cool design ?

I've been longing for a transformer mini (7" tab, full size dock) for some time. I thought the 370t might be the ticket, but instead of gaining a keyboard dock, it lost some extras and became the nexus 7. To add insult to injury, Asus came out after and told pocketlint there would be no transformer mini, apparently they couldn't imagine having a larger dock than tab, even though the empty bezel space would allow for generous front-facing speakers. I'll never understand why tabs direct sound away from the user when they're intended for multimedia.
Anyway, high res is a must (I'm a reader -- fuzzy text gets uncomfortable in long reading sessions), and netbook replacement is a must, and really only the infinity fits the bill. I'm looking forward to seeing just how well the screen performs outdoors. I'd prefer an efficient reflective solution like pixel qi or mirasol, but those can't seem to go primetime, so why not try and outshine the sun w. super ips+?
I'm a little disappointed there's no BT4, and wonder if the single GB of ram will be the first bottleneck to emerge as the device ages. I'm buying for the long haul. By the time I retire my infinity, the tablet category will no longer exist. We'll all have tegra X implanted directly into our brains and wired to our visual cortex.
But otherwise, I'm pretty excited. I came to XDA for XDAndroid on my winmo Touch Pro2. The transformer is the first android series with a better keyboard than that

I've had the tablet for about a month now (8010). I really love it. But I am sure many of you will agree that there is alot of room for feasible improvement. This was how I felt about the galaxy note phone that I currently have as well. Accordingly, I feel that when the galaxy note 2 10.1 tablet comes out... it will have significant OS improvements that will make it much better.... Only for this reason am I considering returning the product just to be more patient for the second generation... your thoughts?

The later generations are typically better, and there are typically later generations coming out all the time, so if you wait for the note 2 10.1, you will find some issues that will be improved on with the note 3 and so on, or some other device. That is how things work and progress, so it really depends on how much money you have if you are able to continue buying the latest and greatest every 6 months or so and want to take the time to get everything set up again. I figure I'll be fine with this one for a couple years and then upgrade a generation or so down the line or go to something else that becomes better. It is never ending as technology is constantly improving and methods for development are always improving and changing.
In order for companies to have money and staff for their proper research and development, people need to purchase their products on the market now and invest that way.

I am perfectly happy with my Note 10.1. I would suspect the Note 10.1 v2 won't be out until late next summer so you have to decide if you want to wait that long go for it.
As for improvements to this I would be curious what you think needs major improvement, so much so you would return this. I am actually quite impressed with the software on this. I have a Galaxy Nexus and Xoom both with Jellybean so I was a little hesitant getting a non Nexus device but I must say Samsung has done a pretty good job with this OS, even TouchWiz is pretty good. While we are promised Jellybean soon, and I am fairly confident we will get Key Lime Pie, I doubt we will see anything after that unless the dev community is able to make it happen. As of now I am good with this because the tablet is good enough not to need much more from the OS.
Speed and responsiveness thanks to the quad core and 2 Gb of RAM is impressive. Unlike the Tegra2 in my Xoom, I believe this hardware will hold up well for the next 2 years of app development. Even with Jellybean on the Xoom, the Note 10.1 with ICS is much smoother (thanks its internals).
All this to say I am very happy with this tablet.

It's kind of a bad comparison you're making. The Note 10.1 is the equivalent of the SGS3 and Note II both h/w and s/w wise. The OG Note I was equivalent to the SGS2 and OG G-Tab 10.1. Samsung sold only 700K OG G-Tab 10.1’s in the U.S. after spending $500K marketing them and distributing them via the U.S. carriers. That’s pretty pitiful considering it was deemed the most compelling Android tablet on the market and the best alternative to the iPad. All the Android tablet makers are also now making W8 tablets. Depending on their success with W8 you may see them greatly reduce or pull out of the Android tablet market completely.
This article talks about Android tablets in a post-W8 tablet world…

The only thing I think that the note misses:
A working and reliable office clone, with the ability to ink
A note taking program that records audio, as it takes not. Like livescribe does, or onenote does. I was quite suprised to find that this doesnt exist in android yet.
A keyboard accessory, that works like a clam. A tranformer type keyboard would be fabulous
Otherwise I think the Note 10.1 is fabulous

Yup. I agree with the others. You're trying to decide if you should own the best android tablet or nothing?. The Note 10.1 stands out in front of the other tablets. So it your looking for the best tablet, this is it. Don't wait.
If you really would like to upgrade when the next model comes out, I would keep the Note 10.1 until then.

What you did not mention is what is that you do not like in the note.
Samsung has given note hardware that is not required at present like 2gb of ram one of the reasons for doing so is to make it future proof upto a certain extent, I belive a life of a laptop is 3 years, cellphone and tablet may be around 2 years and with period I think note would be good enough.
Yes the screen resolution on PAPER looks like it needs improvement but that was I think to keep price down because of the Spen.
But overall I believe its a great tablet.
One thing I can challeng no other tablet can do or will do for a long time to come is write a mail using spen believe me my handwriting on a scale to 1-10 is 1 and still it recognises it and thats something awesome

Thanks for all your responses! My biggest worry / problem with this tablet is to build quality. Overall, for a 500+dollar tablet I feel like its overall aesthetics aren't as sleek nor seem as durable as it should be. [really didn't mind the plastic build on my note phone but I guess a tablet it does seem a little cheap. Secondly, I think the biggest improvement can and will be made in themulti-app functionality. I enjoy the experience of it right now but it is not truly a polished function of Samsung's feature. Included should be hOw S- memo functions. LastIy the biggest disappointments Come from Polaris. I use a bluetooth keyboard to really Use my tablet as a laptop replacement for small tasks such as organising class notes. But I often am frustrated with how Polaris functions. Though the merit of the tablet is its s-pen the inability to be productiveWith a keyboard on Polaris makes me wonder if I should seriously consider Windows...

I think you have formed an opinion against the note if you think polaris is not good enough you can look at other office apps on market place spend few extra buck or dl it from sites
Looks are concerned well once in case they wont matter but I have the bluish grey like the one on SG3 and I love how the back looks but again I have case so its not visible. but then its onces taste. I feel looks wise tablet may not win awards but its not an ugly duckling either. its a look samsung has gone with for all its mobile devices so whether you like it or hate it you have to live with it

After owning the first Galaxy Tab, Asus Transformer and the Galaxy Tab 7.7 the 10.1 note is without a doubt the one i have enjoyed and used the most. The screen resolution is a slight let down after the 7.7 but everything else is best on the market at present so this is a keeper. Good for media and useful for business.

I think u should wait for the tablet that will launch in 2040... it would be perfect. Would have a full frame prismless dslr integrated, will be able to change physical shape, will have quantum computing cpu, 12800 ppi display, ffc (far field communication chip, allowing u to beam photos from distant planets without internet) and will be powered by a nuclear fusion cells that can outlast human life span on one single charge!
But in order to pass this time till next big thing comes... buy note 10.1. It brings a smile on my face everyday! Hopefully it will give u same joy!

This is good stuff. Personally I love this thing and I use it to about 1/10th of its ability. It's fast, smooth, and there is so much to it that I'm just enjoying reading and researching this thing. The great thing about this, and android in general, is options. We have lots of options.
I am always amazed about complaints, particularly in the cell phone arena. People have completely forgotten its a damn phone. If you want a super computer, well go buy one. Same can be said for the tablet market. If you are working on some complicated excel sheet, and you get pissed because something gets corrupted or something, chances are, you should be probably using your computer for that excel sheet that is mission critical for your 8am meeting. Don't get mad cause some formula driven excel sheet got corrupted why you tried to edit or create it on your tablet
My last rant will be about one of my iSheep friends who I let play with it. He held it, turned vertically, then horizontally, then vertically again, repeat a few more times etc. He snapped a couple pictures, then handed it back to me after 45 seconds and said, "this thing is terrible...its clunky and awkward". I looked at him, shook my head, and did the best sheep imitation I could muster. That cult is more then I can handle.
