[Q] I screwed up (Solved) - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was trying to update a friends transformer to ICS (revolver) and I forgot that you have to put the zip on the internal storage (at least that's the only way I know how to do it) I'm using roach CWM based 5.5.0.4, I was playing around in there and, this is where I really screwed up, wiped /system. I have adb access and I'm in recovery but there's no rom installed on the tab because of me wiping /system. The rom is on the sd card (not the internal storage labeled as sdcard, an actual sd card). I tried pushing it from adb but I was probably doing it wrong. I was looking for a way to mount the internal storage but I didn't see any. I've tried several options but none have worked so any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

so why don't you just install the rom from the microSD?
You have a 5.xxx recovery, and that allows you to install zips from microSD. Just pop that into a PC and copy the rom file on it. Select install from microsd and there you go...
PS: wiping /system doesn't format the internal storage...

I have the rom on the external sd card. I tried the flash from sd and it was looking at the internal "virtual" sd card. I didn't see an option to switch to the external sd and I think there are some recoverys that use the external sd as default but I haven't been able to find one. If I did find one it would have to be an image so I could flash it through bootloader.
I was looking for a .img file to flash through bootloader but couldn't find one of those. I tried adb push to get the .zip onto the internal storage but, and I'm sure I was doing something wrong, that didn't work.

wait wait wait... just to clarify, are you using the full size sd card on the dock?
LE: what's your sbk version? if you're sbk1, you can also use nvflash

I think the guy said MicroSD up there, the one you inserted on the side. But the onboard CWM only detect the internal virtual SDcard.
Now he screwed because of the full wipe prior flashing while the intended Rom was placed in the MicroSD..
Yea, if the transformer comes with B70 or below, then you can use Flash to do the magic.

no, no dock. I'm using the external micro sd.
So I finally got it to push, I renamed the file ics.zip because I didn't feel like typing out the whole file name and because I used .zip at the end the file was actually ics.zip.zip, that's why it couldn't find it.
cmd says:
C:\Transformer>adb push ics.zip /sdcard
1333 KB/s <268182367 bytes in 196.431s>
It pushed but now I just tried "choose zip from sdcard" and I got "couldn't open directory. No files found"
Edit: For some reason nothing was showing up at all on the internal storage so I rebooted back into recovery and all the files that were there before returned. I didn't see my ics.zip in there though which was odd but in searching through the folders i found an older version of a rom I flashed on there when I first rooted it. It's on the welcome screen right now.

Thanks for your input, you were most helpful.
BTW, I did research and the problem is solved now, you'd have noticed if you read.

Hm interesting... Why wouldnt you be able to push to /sdcard/ (notice the extra slash)?
Is that folder not mounted correctly while in recovery? Ive never tried ADB in recovery, only in android and push to /sdcard/ works just fine.
pushing anything to /sdcard does not work though (notice the lack of the extra slash). Might be my rom but doubt it since its the same on my phone and other tablet...

Like you said, /sdcard is wrong.
The correct paths are /sdcard/, /data/media, and /data/media/.
Most ADB guides posted on this forum use /data/media(/) though.

So much fail in this thread.
1. Because his version of CWM doesn't support microSD
2. Since when does 5.xxx recovery support installing from MicroSD?
3. wiping /system doesn't format internal storage but it wipes out the OS so there is no OS to boot into.
The correct path for pushing files to internal storage on TF101 is /data/media
Do some friggin research before you do things, wow.

1.&2. his version might not support it and since i'm using Rogue XM Recovery v1.3.0 (CWM-based Recovery v5.0.2.7), i just thought being v5 it would. It was just a fast answer, no need for your superiority complex.

There are a lot of people like him in all the forums, it's best just to walk away. I'm not new but I wasn't thinking clearly due to lack of sleep. Also the tf101 wasn't mine, I forgot how Asus had the storage set up, and I was thinking it would have the same path whether you were booted or through ADB. I knew I screwed up, that's why I said it right in the title. Oh well, it's fixed now. The problem is that a lot of people turn developers and newbies away by acting like that.

you can now backup and restore ext4 based partitions.
This also give the option to have the latest cwm, and gives the option to be able to flash from internal sd if you happen to have a small microsd, anotherwords if you have only a 2gb microsd, go for the internal version because that will give you more space for roms, kernels, and mods, and backups.
Thanks Krylon!

UnionMount/aufs/unionfs?
Anybody remember the discussions and use of aufs (https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Aufs) and unionfs (https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/UnionFS) back in the G1 days? Lots of discussions here in XDA about it but I believe it was available in haykuro, cyanogen and jesusfreak builds. It allows two separate filesystems to appear on the same mount point. I'm not sure what issues exist with it today but maybe some of the kernel hackers could comment?
Anyone else notice that the SD card space free is messed up on the external version? Still seems to be reading the free space from Internal, although SEEMS to be backing up to external SD (as its not failing w/ on 300MBs free)
EDIT: LMAO! Guess i accidentally flashed the wrong version. That's what happens when I work on my phone before coffee........

[Q] Can't find zip in recovery mode when trying to install rom

Hi All.
I'm new to this and trying to install my first rom (aiming for cynagenmod 7- it has the language support i need, or so they say)
I rooted my phone and followed a yourtube video titled "How To Install CyanogenMod 7 Nightly on T-Mobile G2x after Nandroid Backup"
When i get to the part where i need to install zip from sd card, i can't find the file. I went back and copied the zip file into a few different folders, and although i can locate the folders, it tells me that the file cannot be found.
How do i get around this? Your help is much appreciated.

How did you download it? Through rom manager or from the phones xda app, browser? Look in folders with xda or rom manager?? Next time just copy and paste it to the root of the sdcard, not in a folder.
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda premium
Downloaded it on a computer and then copied it to sd card
and you can't find where you put it? did you place it in a certain folder already created... you can plug your phone in to pc then enter recovery mode, go to storage and mounts at the bottom select mount usb then copy the zip to your sdcard in no folders.
When i try to do that t tells me unable to write to ums lunfile (no such file or directory).
From recovery mode there are some folders i can't see when i browse the folders on the computer when the phone is booted up normally - and vice versa. Is this an indicaiton of a problem?
Silly question: do you actually have an SD card inserted in your phone? If so, what did you use to format it?
i do have an sd, and i actually didn't format it. should i format? if so, what is the best way?
Your help is much appreciated

Did you try, while in recovery, taking the back off your phone, pop out the sd card, wait 1 second, then pop it back in?
Stupid question, but it's a mistake some beginners make, but did you unzip it by any chance? That could be a reason CWM isn't seeing it. Once you DL the ROM you need to leave it untouched. Then place on SD.
After that in CWM go to choose zip from sd.
And you attained CWM via NVFlash correct?

Maybe you accidentally copied it to internal memory instead of the sdcard. You can check in cwm under internal sdcard I believe is what it is called.
When you connect the phone through USB it mounts both internal and the sdcard.

you may have put it on the "internal sd card" instead of external sd card, however this is not an issue if you flash CWM 5.0.2.0 or later, it has an option to install zip from internal sd and external. i renamed my external sd card to avoid future confusion (otherwise i see two "removable disks" when i plug my phone into my computer)
Check your file names on your SD card. Check what you see listed in Recovery. If you see differing file names, then you're accessing the wrong memory.
I'm going to assume you tried booting with the physical buttons. Try booting with CWM which should give you a blue menu.
i did try to boot both ways and both times i did not find it... for the millionth time i took the sd card out and put it back in and rebooted using cwm, and funny enough, it found the direcotry... and yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay, cynagenmod7 is my new rom
thanks for all your help, support and commiseration... really, much appreciated. i do ve a few more issues that i have to research now... again, external sd not found though... will probably solicit more help
again, thanks

Don't unzip the file. When you flash anything via clockwork, it flashes using .zip files.

MUST READ: CWM 5.5.4.0 Internal Storage Problems and Solutions

Note: This topic doesn't intend to crictise any of Roach's works. I really apreciate and admire everything he has been doing. The purpose it's just to discuss problems similar to mine as you will notice during your reading
Hi!
I'm writing this to tell you about my experience and also warn you so that no one else make the same mistake I did. Also, I'm hoping that in your answers I find a solution for my problem other than RMA.
What I wanted to do:
My tablet was running the Honeycomb version of Revolver Parts with Rogue's Recovery and I wanted to uptade it to ICS running Megatron (nothing complicated as you know). However, before do that I thought "well I can upgrade the Recovery as well" and I did it, I installed Roach's CWM 5.5.4.0.
What happened:
I did all the things I wanted but since I misread Roach's topic it made me understand "SDcard support (something like that)" as "MicroSD".. In the end they're both SDcards...
The result was that I put files in the MicroSD and started wiping and formating. Only when I was going for the ROM zip did I noticed there was no MicroSD support. And right now I'm stuck!
Problem & Solutions
The problem is that I'm struck in the recovery I can't either go to the previous ROM as I format everything included system (A usual procedure I do, whenever I change ROM I do superwipe, format everything... so that in the end the new ROM be the cleneast possible) or send new ROM files as I can't acess the internal SDcard.
Along with two great guys which have been helping me: ricardopvz and ValenteLand (once more thank you both, a sério, muito obrigado memso!) I've been coming to some solutions:
ADB: tried it but computers continue to not recognize the usb;
Cold-boot: tried it to but Valente told me now that with system formated "no can do!"
Zip from Dock: this one very crazy (that's why it's highlighted). I remember that yesterday at 3am, when I was maddly try to put transformer to work, I saw something like "install zip from dock". The curious thing is that when I went back to see where that thing was I couldn't find it again. Maybe I was high as **** seeing ways of saving my transformer everywhere eheh but, If you know where something like that is located in Roach's CWM 5.5.0.4 don't hesitate to tell!
Acess internal storage: I really think that this is going to be the solution. My transformer works flawless, I did everything I usually do when swaping ROMs. The only problem was that this time I didn't have a MicroSD card. So I'm almost sure if I could connect the transformer to my computer (maybe with sata) and I could put there the files I could have my transformer back very soon.
Well I guess that's all. Really looking forward to know your opinions (especially related to the last solution: opening the tablet or RMA since I still have guarantee?) and I hope I could helped someone avoid a similar situation.
Cheers.

You said you could go to the previous ROM, so can't you boot in this ROM, then enable ADB and push the files of Rogue Recovery(For example, but this recovery has access to internal AND external storage) to the internal storage, so that you can flash it, and be happy?
RMA'ing it is not a good solution. You can try it but maybe they'll find out you're not using stock, and the warranty won't be applied. But try it, it's better than opening...

Sorry I mispelled. What I meant was "can't".
About the RMA I have that feeling to. Without guarantee it would become expensive for sure. Anyone knows how to connect internal storage to PC (directly, like sata or something)?
Check to see if NVFlash is an option, you know SBK v1.

How install a zip file from Dock SDcard?
After this I tested and work. What's very good solution:
Tested on Rogue XM v1.3.0. This recovery have internal and external store but can have also install from Dock SDcard.
I put on a SDcard on /download/stock_kernel.zip to flash this kernel on Megatrom Rom and put it on the dock.
On Rogue recovery:
- Mount and Storage
- Mount USB OTG drive at /SDcard
- Chose ZIP file from SDcard (after Mount this is the Dock Sdcard)
- Here I have /download/Stock_Kernel.zip (of Dock)
- Touch to start the flash and ok, ok, ok
I had a Guevor kernel on Megatron, now I have a stock kernel.
That is very good

The Rogue XM have two line like this on Mount and Storage:
Mount USB OTG drive at /sdcard --> to a dock Sdcard
Mount as USB storage (USB Mass Storage mode) --> I think to Disks on USB
It's bad if V5.4.4.0 not have something like this.

Made big mistake while flashing custom rom

I need some help, stupid me put the files i need to flash custom rom on my sd card and when i went to install the zip it was not there, its not my sd card at all. Is there anyway to get those files back on the internal storage instead of my sd card or is there a way to access the actual sd card in cwm? If not is there a way to do a factory reset back to the factory rom?

If not is there a way to do a factory reset back to the factory rom?

Any help would be appreciated. I hate to know that at this point i have a $400 paperweight.
Don't panic, all hope is not yet lost and I don't think you've bricked your device. Can you describe in more detail the exact steps you took? When you say 'sdcard' do you mean your external SD card or the tablets' internal memory (its called /sdcard on the tablet, so its a bit confusing).
There is absolutely ways to recover your tablet assuming you took the proper precautions beforehand. Before I give an answer (assuming my knowledge is even correct) can you give more details of your setup? Which recovery do you have? Which ROM do you have installed? Is your bootloader unlocked? Are you rooted? All of these answers will give more information and will guide you to a better answer.

This is what happened, today i unlocked, rooted and then installed CWM. I followed steps to format my device from this forum post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1750861. Like i said instead of putting the rom on my internal storage i put it on my external sd card. That is where we are at now.

OK so you're not bricked, you're not messed up at all. CWM doesn't support flashing from external SD cards, so all you need to do is move the files to the /(root) directory of your tablet. Are you still able to boot up the tablet normally? If so, connect it to your computer with the USB cable (assuming you've got the correct drivers installed, and ADB/fastboot both work) and just copy the files to the first directory you see when you double click "internal storage". This will be the root directory of your tablet. From there, you should be able to just boot into CWM and it will show your ROM there.
I'll be actively monitoring this thread so if you have any questions feel free to continue to post. I know how frustrating it is to post a question and not get an answer until days later.
*EDIT* ok so I just noticed one thing: you're trying to install the Hydro rom, correct? So you need to go back to STOCK using this guide. Then, re-install CWM, re-root your tablet, and then try to install the Hydro rom.

I can not boot past the asus logo. I seen how people were able to push a rom through fastboot and adb but i can not seem to get my device to be seen by my computer.

Then the next logical step will be to diagnose whether you have the drivers installed correctly. Do you have the Android SDK pack installed? It comes with some google drivers, and there is an aftermarket driver file that helps the computer recognize a larger variety of devices. Follow the steps in this thread to get those drivers working. If those don't work, try install the official Asus Pad suite drivers.

Hmm, I'm running out of suggestions since I'm still learning all this stuff too. I guess since you can't get past the Asus screen it won't detect in the computer. So the next step I can suggest is to get fastboot mode working. Do this by powering your tablet off. To get into fastboot mode, press and hold the POWER & VOLUME DOWN buttons simultaneously. It'll show some words about booting into recovery, don't do that. Just wait for a few logos, then select the middle one (USB icon) with the VOLUME UP key. Connect your tablet to your computer and you should be recognized to allow you to push files over (I don't know what the syntax is for fastboot but I'm sure it won't be difficult to figure out)

I'm going to try hooking my tablet up to another computer and see if i can get anywhere with it like that. I'm really starting to think this thing is fubared.
UPDATE Nothing worked on the laptop. Anyone else know of a way to get me out of this mess or am i screwed?
adb push any rom to the internal memory. if you can't do it in windows try a ubuntu live cd, you won't get errors in adb while using linux.

I don't have linux i have windows, how do i do that?
UPDATE:
Well i gave up trying to get this to work and luckily i was able to return my tablet to the store. I want to thank opethfan89 for doing what you could to help me. Lesson learned, i have to make sure i use the internal sd card! What got me confused is i rooted and installed a custom rom on my nook and with that you had to put everything on the external sd card. Now i know what not to do again lol.
Good thing you were able to return it. Although im pretty sure you could have used adb to push the files directly to your internal memory no problem.

Like the poster above said, you could have used a Linux live CD, downloaded ADB for Linux, and used ADB under Linux.

That's a good plan. When I flash a new ROM, I always make sure I have at least one known-working ROM and at least one nandroid backup just in case.
Also, just as an organization suggestion, name the ROM folder something like "1-ROMs" or "All ROMS" or something else at the beginning of the alphabet so it appears at the top of the list when you're choosing a zip to flash. I personally use "1-ROMs", "2-Kernels" and "3-Extras", so they're the first three folders listed (Extras is for Gapps, mods, other flashables). It saves a lot of scrolling time.

You were able to return it?? Amazing attitude ASUS has over there. You weren't charged for repair at all?
I did a similar thing on workmate's tablet as he asked me to flash him custom os. I installed TWRP recovery successfully and copied firmware I wanted to install on internal SD. Then I wiped DATA. I thought it would wipe only user data, but it wiped also the root of my SD card with firmware. Before that I wiped system as well. So now I'm stuck at ASUS logo after power up.
I will try methods that were described in the thread by opethfan89 and atomicblue with adb push and Linux after I come back from vacation (14th this month). Hopefully I will be able to save the tablet. Otherwise it'll have to be sold for spare parts as ASUS quoted over 300 € (about $400) for repairs claiming the warranty is void (which I know) as I unlocked bootloader. They said they won't even try flashing it but they'll just replace motherboard as they never repair unlocked devices. I can't imagine car service refusing to change oil claiming they are concerned that owner might have abused it and they'd rather change whole engine instead.

[Q] Emulated Drive Kit Kang ROM 4.4

Since i cant yet post in the actual ROM thread i Though i would post here.
Ever since i flashed this ROM, my phone has created a copy of my drive and i can seem to access the original drive without going into the recovery.
It named the emulated drive 0.
When i try and system restore in order to do a clean flash, files carry over from the emulated drive and i cant figure out how to get rid of it. If anyone can help me i would appreciate it.

I hear you bubba, I have wondered what the deal is with the /0, but I've never had any issues whatsoever with it, just have to poke around a bit differently now. I am still interested to know why/what/how though, learning is knowledge.

only problem is i cant remove the data from the initial drive so i have like 3 gigs left of storage when i could have the full 12 give or take.
I'd format the partitions.... not just wipe; then reflash.

Learning is knowledge. Mind you, the custom recoveries have newer versions so that part is the only thing that needs updating to today's standards.
So if I go to download the latest twrp (2.3.6.1) do I need to move it to the original SD and flash it from there? If that is the case I have no idea where the original one is. I can't find it in root explorer.

It should download to your Downloads folder if you downloaded it via a browser. If you used GooManager, then it would be in your GooManager folder. What are you using to flash TWRP 2.6.3.1?

since its a .zip i figured i needed to flash it through my current recovery and then reboot but the downloads folder is in my emulated drive. Basically i cant see the actual drive anymore even in root explorer only the emulated drive and there is like 4 different ones.

If you're on JB AOSP, then your downloads folder is in /0/sdcard/downloads OR /sdcard0/downloads. Basically, start at /mnt OR /storage and choose "sdcard0" or "sdcard" as the phone interchangeably uses both to refer to internal storage. I'm used to using an IMG file for recoveries, if you don't mind my asking where did you find this TWRP zip from?

Here is the .zip:
considering i cant post links yet i wont be able to link it too you but it was from the recovery thread in the dev forum.
I can get to that location the "/storage" but when im there i see "/emulated, /sdcard0, /sdcard1, /usbdisk1" .
when i open up /sdcard1 i see nothing and same with /usbdisk0.
/emulated has /0 and /legacy and both of them are identical inside.
but actually as im typing i just found the original sd card.
The path is /mnt/shell/emulated. so i guess thats some progress lol.
Glad you found that. It shouldn't matter, but what file manager are you using? Have you tried connecting to your computer and flipping through everything that way to find it? Ive found that to be a little less convoluted; knowledge is power.
