[Q] Problem with sms app replacements - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I keep trying new sms replacement apps and i really liked gosms and handcent but i have a glitch with them that i cant seem to fix
whenever i open the app i get a notification for a message that ive gotten months ago and already deleted long ago, when i swipe it away or click on it it goes away then comes back again as soon as i open up gosms or handcent but i never get this notification in my stock text app, and i can never get it to stop appearing in any other text app, ive tried as many different settings as i can in the new apps, and tried erasing all my messages, cleared my stock sms app and turned of stock notifications but still getting the notification returning, any ideas?

I have the same problem on my Nexus with ICS 4.0.4

Maybe its just a problem for nexus s w 4.0.4 cause ive tried them before when i had gingerbread and 4.0.3 and had no problems

I also had that problem.

Perhaps clear data on the stock messaging app? Maybe even delete the db associated with it? I would search up on that though as I'm just assuming it will automatically recreate it. I'm also not sure of the name of the file.

handcent?

is anyone using HANDCENT SMS over the STOCK SMS application that comes with SENSE and ANDROID on the EVO? I am testing it out and its pretty cool! is there any reason not to use it? does it drain battery???
Been using Handcent for months now over the stock messenger & it's a go
Swyped by Gator_don & his Evo
I prefer handscent over stock app any day. Best part for me is that it pops up messages over the lock screen and lets you reply with out unlocking the phone.
I've been using Handcent since the Hero came out and had that massive battery drain issue with the stock message system that kept the cpu at 100% without letting it sleep...the first thing I downloaded when I got my EVO was Handcent! I love it!
I've always used and loved Handcent.
I used for a while with hero then evo, dropped it a month ago and get better battery lifr since, its a great program but in my evo it drains more battery than stock and I guess I just got used to stock again. miui messenger rocks too
Handcent since day one.
I've been using Handcent since the day after I got my Evo. I've tried others, like ChompSMS, but I keep coming back to Handcent.
handcent all day errryyy dayyy
Google Voice
The only draw back on handcent there is no way to use your google voice number with it.
But I love it.

Well said.
Well, I installed it and used it for a day and then could not figure out which combination of settings would keep the stock messaging app from popping up notifications in addition to the handcent notifications. clearing all the text notifications from not one but TWO apps got on my nerves in a hurry.
Simply disable notifications in Messages and you only have Handcent's popping up.
Is anyone else experiencing any lag with handcent?? Takes forever for the message to pop up on the screen n takes even longer for it to notify me once the message does pop up. The last few updates seem to have messed it up. Ive tried to uninstall n reinstalled but that hasnt worked. N on top of that, the stock messaging app doesnt work at all. I will never get any texts and sent texts will not go thro. So im stuck with handcent i guess for now.

You have to keep the messaging app, if you delete it/uninstall it, it will cause handcent to have those issues.

Correct but there is not way of using the google voice with any other messaging app. Only the google voice app itself. It would be great if you can integrate it with your messaging app and only need to use one. That would be sweeeeeeeet.

You simply open the stock app and go in to settings. From settings turn off all notifications. This stops the stock app from popping up and having 2 different apps telling you about your messages.

Sidekick unknown error on lockscreen

On the lockscreen, on the second slide down thing there is an ! with unknown beside it. After you unlock the phone you can't find that notification any where!
Already checked the notification bar and went and cleared the ram. Still the same. Does anyone know what it is trying to tell me or how to clear it?
I have factory reset the phone one time and it went away, but then came back in a day.
That's where the date goes. I see "unknown" there occasionally. I assume that this is because the phone hasn't gotten the date from the cell network yet, but still has the time cached internally. For me, it generally goes away after a bit.
The one time it didn't go away fairly quickly was when I had Handcent SMS installed and had configured my phone to use it and it's notifications, generally disabling the stock Messaging app and it's notifications. It stayed "unknown" while I had Handcent installed. When I removed Handcent and turned the stock SMS app back on it went back to showing the date.
I didn't test this rigorously, and have no idea if it's causal or just a coincidence. Has anyone else observed behavior like this?
thanks
I'm sure that it's handcent then, I haven't uninstalled it yet. But I bet that's it.
Thanks for the reply. Contacted handcent support about the bug.
I don't think its a handcent issue. I've had the same problem. The only way I got it to go away was to open the stock messaging app and view my last conversation. Then its off the lock screen. Try that. If it works for you...its an issue with stock software. I've had a fewb problems with the stock app. Wish I could just remove it lol

Found it
It seems if you turn off notifications in the Stock messaging app it gets cranky.
I turned them back on and it shows the time on the bottom lock screen.
I then went back and turned them back off and the time stayed, we'll see how long.
This is beyond annoying.
Screenshot, please?
Happns 2 me too glad 2 know I am not alone...

i think that this is a common thing, whenever i dont check my text msg or randomly click the power button, i would see the "!" at the bottom screen..dont know why
I had this problem too on my Sidekick 4G. I am using Handcent but I don't know if that's the cause for me.
What I did to solve this problem: I went into the stock messaging app, into the menu, where I chose "Browser Message". (This menu option is not always present, but apparently shows up when you get a message from your cell carrier.) There was one message listed, and I deleted it. After that, my lock screen displayed the date again.
When you get mms messages, it goes to the stock messaging app as well, so just go in the stock messaging app and view it in there and it will go away. Or, before your SD card loads, messages will go straight to the stock messaging app. Just view all your threads in there, click each one, and the unknown will go away.

[Q] I feel like such a noob but, can Gmail notifications not be disabled anymore?

So I flashed Cyanogen Mod and I hated it. Unfortunately I forgot to do a backup of my stock rooted rom. So i flashed a clean install of the latest stock rooted rom. Now gmail notifications are driving me nuts. I remember that you were able to disable them before by simply going into settings within the Gmail app. Now this option is gone. I feel like such a noob.
I might as well through this question out as well. How on earth can I set handcent as my default texting app? Again, before flashing the new rom, this was also in the settings menu for the app but now I can't seem to find it and whenever I get a text I get two notifications. One from the stock texting app and another from handcent.
With hancent installed you have to disable notifications in the stock messaging app.

stock messaging app problem - my threads stopped updating

Has anyone had this happen? I have a stock HTC One X that I have rooted. Everything was fine, but now, starting today, when I create a text message, I click send, and it reloads the thread, but my text does not show up - it's just the same last text showing from before the problem started. When people send me texts, I do not see them, but I do get the notification. I rebooted the phone, and cleared the app cache to no avail.
I tried Handcent, and it works just fine. However, handcent has that funky menu bar at the bottom that I hate, and I get a notification from both Handcent and from the stock messaging app, which is annoying.
Any ideas on how to fix this are much appreciated.
Once I hit about 6000 messages I wasn't able to even load threads. I'm just using GO SMS Pro until there's a stable CM10 release for this phone.
Try going into setting and clearing the apps cache then reboot.
Thank you for the replies - I already cleared the cache. I ended up "fixing it", or rather, the problem went away, when I deleted the threads from my best friend and wife. The only thing I can think of is that maybe there is a thread cap, and I message them a lot? Iunno, but it's working now.

Not getting some sms notifications

noticing that sometimes I don't get notifications for sms or mms. Any one else having this issue on KitKat? Have any fix?
I've tried just about everything like switching hangouts to the stock android sms app, freezing circles (since its tied in with sms in a notification sense), turning off and on all notification toggles, a factory reset and also tried reflashing the fxz file with RSDlite.
I'm totally stumped.

i dont really have a fix, but i use some reminder apps.
maybe that will get you around this issue until a fix is found.
here are the 2 i use,
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.missed.activity
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.hermes.enotifylite
I have the same problem. Its really frustrating because I have to constantly check to see if I have new messages. And the reminder apps didn't work for me. Because the notification doesn't ever actually exist at all, I'm assuming that's why. They work when I go into hangouts and the new message shows up, however.
