[Q] What's the best laptop to buy? - General Questions and Answers

I'm looking for a laptop with a dedicated graphics card (for gaming and video editing) with a price below $1000. I'd prefer that the keyboard NOT have a number pad to the right of the keys, and that the screen be at least 14 inches. The lighter, the better. Any ideas?

I own a Lenovo Y570 and I like it alot. Has an Intel i7 CPU with 8GB of RAM. And most importantly it's got an Nvidia GT555 with the switchable graphics, to disable dedicated GPU when you don't need it and need to be in battery-save mode. The 15.6" version has a full keyboard with numpad, but I don't think the Y470 has a numpad.

I just looked it (y570) up and wow, it seems like a great deal. However, I can't find the y470 anywhere :? is it only available directly from Lenovo?

Alienwares are too...heavy, and Macbooks are >$1000
Anyone else?
EDIT: just found out that the y470 is discontinued, but has been replaced by the y470p, which is more or less the same thing except you can pick between Nvidia and AMD graphics...thanks jenocide

Lenovo or HP would be your best bet, as far as graphics are concerned i would go with HP (depending on what you are trying to do).

Apad M70003 MIDI

Hi all. Just finished ordering this tablet that is currently running cupcake. Would love to root it and install a custom ROM. Any info on how I can achieve this?
Thanks in advance
offtopic... does the apad run any good? is it smooth?
Why is it off topic. It is a tablet that runs android. Do not have it yet so can't comment on how good or bad it runs.
i was asking an off topic question (i.e. not related to your question). guess i phrased my sentence wrongly. do post here on how well this device seems to perform.
I will. Thanks for your intrest.
You should of waited for the Notion's ADAM
I only paid $100.00 US for my tablet. This one is considerably more.

hey could you pm me the site where you purchased it from?
could you update your main post with the specs that you ordered from? Apparently there are Apad clones with crappy processors instead of the rockchip processors
Dealextreme has it for cheap
dealextreme is the crap version. the proper apad is the one with rockchip in it. and i found out that the cheapest apad with rockchip is ~150usd
i have one of those too.
with the rockchip which actually is not to bad of a processor. nowhere near the A4 but ok to work with.
it's an ARM derivative and consists of a cpu and dsp(gpu).
i would also like to know if anybody has played with it yet.
i followed the android instructions of building a development envirnment and have the tablet actually show up in eclipse but where to go from here?
sorry for threadjacking a bit
i would first of all like to be able to upgrade android. if possible 2.2 or at least to 1.6.
the device has the upgrade locked.
the are also language option conflicts were suggestive text and some keyboard keys still show up in (i guess) Chinese.
It'll most likely be impossible to upgrade the apad to 2.1/2.2 as rockchip dsp isn't actually a gpu, its a video processor for videos only.
on another note i have decided to pass up on the apad as it doesn't seem that "future-proof" most likely will get this http://www.wiipad.us/product.php?id_product=11 unless better options come out in the next 1 month or so
does android 2.x require a specialized dedicated gpu?
the dsp is essentially a gpu, it is capable of playing 720p video.
it should be plenty for android 2.x to get around
so i can move files from the device to the pc.
i copied the data and system folder.
what to do now?

Yeah but it decodes videos only, a gpu actually pumps out the graphics which is an intergral part of 2.1 onwards (also in the rockchip's specs i saw somewhere this chip does not support 2.1) The wiipad neno has a cortex a8 core which is similar to the ipad's processor so it is running on 2.1.

Go for a refurb Nook Color or Archos.
The tablet you showed has good specs but considering the fact that it's not a common model, you will have trouble finding,
1) rooting procedures.
2) service/repair
3) custom ROMs.
And, the one you showed looks like a Chinese tablet that have crappy hardware and software.
If you took a look at the review they said it was quite neat, and I've only heard good things about it when looking around.
It just worries me a bit, that people says 2.2 is crap and that dual core is worth **** when most things only run one one :/
Nook Color and Archos is e-reader, I don't want that :/
Only 2.3 and 3.0 tablets worth buying?
Nook is fully functional android tablet when rooted... Not just e-reader... And much better than the Chinese tablet you are looking at. A friend at work bought one of those... Very slow and lags like crazy... No good. Hope you find what works for you.

2.3 and 3.0 tablets are somewhat worth buying. Archos is not an eReader. It's a PMP/tablet. Nook Color is an eReader and so has an excellent display. Still, it's full touch and can be rooted and made to function as a real tablet.
I wouldn't really call 2.2 crap. It's good but with a Nook Color, you will be able to update to 2.3.5 using CM7.
It's sad that you are making me repeat myself, a Nook Color comes with an American warranty unlike a Chinese product which has no warranty. Even if they advertise one, you can't be sure that they will honor it 100%.
A review can be biased. On the internet, you can easily write a biased review. Nook Color has a huge modding community and, not everyone is going to be biased.
As for Archos, it's more multimedia oriented and so has a dual cam as well.
I wouldn't call dual core ****. Although not a lot of software can utilize multi-threading, you will see better software soon. It might take some time by when, your tablet would become slow and outdated. Dual core is worth it but it's not a smart choice, right now.

Nook Color does consume more battery but it has reasonable life.
Then again, it all boils down to your own priorities. If you don't mind a sub-standard Chinese product as long as it's cheap and has some cool specs, go ahead. If you want a somewhat quality product which is either little expensive or has lower specs, don't buy the model you showed.
I think I'll buy it next month, just to try out a tablet.
I can always buy something else if I like it

Even laptops are hard to upgrade hardware wise, let alone tablets.
He is talking about software. That thing runs 2.2. Most smartphones listed in have custom ROMs. Most phones that have only 2.1 officially have 2.3 ported unofficial by XDA members. He is asking if you can upgrade that device to 2.3 at least unofficially.

That looks more like a scam. It is impossible to squeeze so much power with such a low price.
What is your primary purpose for this tablet?
I would second the suggestions for Nook&Color.
Also, I hear Amazon's going to launch it's new android based eBook-centric tablet, as "Amazon Kindle" for $250. If you just want to read some ebooks, do a little surfing, and play games like Angry Birds. Then I think this tablet is for you. Keep in mind that this tablet is very ebook-oriented and NOT AT ALL like any other android based tablet. Heck, it doesn't even support some of the google services (Android market). You may want to watch out for that.

Recommend me a tablet

Hey XDA. Im currently sending this off of a crappy ipod touch 4g. So sorry if there is any gramatical or spelling errors. Im going to be selling this on ebay to help fund my tablet because it looks like they can sell for $150 to $200 in the condition mine is currently in.
But anyway, Im looking for a tablet, I dont care about size. Im looking to get one for $200 to $300 new. I was hoping it could have at least a gig of ram, a dual core (if possible), be able to play games well, have a decent sized development community on gere, rootable, and a decent battery life because I will be taking this to school.
I know Im asking for a lot, but rooting and installing roms looks like a lot of fun, and Im not able to buy an android phone because with us cellular they require a data plan, which my dad doesnt need, so he doesnt want to pay for it (which is fair).
Ive also heard of the nvidia tegra 2, just wondering is that a cpu, apu or gpu? I currently own a gtx 460 in my computer, so if I had a nvidia product like that in my tablet, that would be cool.
Alright sorry that ive asked a lot, if this has alreadt been answered please feel free to close this thread and link me to the thread where that answer is.
Thanks!

Good luck finding a TouchPad...
Most of the lesser expensive tablets (I. E. In your price range) are either underpowered or do not have custom ROMs.
If you don't mind a slightly sluggish experience but it runs games well you could get a nook color which has cyanogenmod support. If you want speed and decent power, kindle fire is a good bet. If you want a tablet that's very powerful and has root (you can customise apps and launchers, etc.) nook tablet. Nook tablet does not yet have custom ROMs but it has root and is the cheapest tablet in its class.

Now they can be readily found on eBay, but they are going up in price; the price for one of the 16GB models has risen about $40 in the past week. Upon using the device, three of my friends have bought one for themselves, I really can't recommend the device enough.
I'd suggest looking at the Nook Color or Nook Tablet. They sell new for $200 & $250 respectively. They are a little underpowered compared to some of the newer stuff like a Galaxy Tab 10.1 or something like that, but you can't beat that price. You'd be lacking some things, like a camera and microphone.
CM7 is currently available for the Nook Color and works amazingly well. I'm sure it'll be made available for the Tablet soon enough if it doesn't yet exist. Depending on what you mean to do with the tablet one of these may be more than enough.

Nook Color runs stably at 1.3 ghz under cyanogenmod 7. It feels a little pokey to me and I have one.
Nook tablet is dual core 1.1 OMAP 4 with a gig of ram. It is hardly underpowered as I have one of these as well.
The biggest issue with both nooks is android <3. 0 so it does not have the interface GPU accelerated. Any tablets above gingerbread will seem faster even if they have lower specs. Most of the time the GPU does nothing and the cpu has to process the interface, touch, plus everything else. Touch and interface are offloaded to GPU on honeycomb and higher.
If cyanogenmod 9 come to the Blaze it will be a better tablet than most Honeycomb because it has a faster and better cpu with more ram. Most honeycomb tablets only have 512mb.

I didn't really want the nook color to be honest, and I was thinking about getting the nook tablet, but the only problem is that you can't really install roms on it because of the bootloader being locked or something? (This is what I've heard, I'm an Android noob).
If the boot loader is really locked on newest Nook Tablets, that would eliminate it from my list of possible candidates. Is this true? I was leaning toward the NT because of the card slot, and the possibility of booting from an sd card. (I read that the lock was imposed during an automatic upgrade)

Possible to manually replace the flash memory?

How feasible would it be to have a decent comp engineer to take out the old flash memory and put in a decent spec version to blast up the I/O it's risky obviously but could it work? Anyone with this sort of experience know how interchangeable these chips are? Or are they pretty device specific?

I think this has been spoken of before. It is possible but all the skill and knowledge needed to do so would not really be worth the effort on the tablet. Even if successful it is risky to attempt as the main board in the tablet is meant to be all together, and not bothered.

For my money, I'd rather swap out the 1GB memory chip for either a 2 or 4GB module. Slow I/O wouldn't be as big a deal if the system could keep more things in RAM, and it would prolong the device life as well. The specs on these things are great, but I fear having only 1GB of RAM will start to really hurt as programs get larger and high-definition assets become more prevalent.
I found a video on YouTube where a guy has two Android phones with similar specs side-by-side, one with 1GB of RAM and the other with 2GB. The lag between switching applications caused by having to restart ones that get killed due to low memory is jarring.
But, since reality says it's cheaper to just buy a new device, that's probably what I'll do (in time anyway). That new one from HP (Slatebook X2 I think it's called) looks quite nice. Tegra4/Cortex-A15 with 2GB of RAM, HD display, and keyboard dock included for $479USD. Yummy!

You are correct about being able to pack more things into RAM to make things faster and smoother, but I can hardly watch a full HD movie from the internal storage without the tablet beginning to become crippled.
I am eager to start seeing tablets with the tag "Intel Inside" lol. And maybe instead of a sdcard thingy, how about a full sata III SSD , wouldnt that be sweet? lol a i/o speed to keep up with RAM . The new convertible tablets that can run Android or Windows 8 seem really sweet that have SSDs and internal SD cards but right now they are way to much for me.

You are correct about being able to pack more things into RAM to make things faster and smoother, but I can hardly watch a full HD movie from the internal storage without the tablet beginning to become crippled.

Can you elaborate? How does it get crippled?
I am eager to start seeing tablets with the tag "Intel Inside" lol.

If Intel can do it without needing active cooling, I'm all for it. There's actually some obscure model Transformer powered by an Intel chip and it looks absolutely ridiculous -- the body is rather thick and it needs big ol' cooling vents on the back.
And maybe instead of a sdcard thingy, how about a full sata III SSD , wouldnt that be sweet? lol a i/o speed to keep up with RAM .

I can't imagine what adding an SSD using SATA3 would do to the price.

When watching a movie, the i/o speed is not good enough to do other stuff with it. Like when you ae watching a movie, it is kind of a idle thinking, and if you would want to move files to the device from your computer while watching a movie. The movie will lag and the file transfer would be extremely slow.

Yeah Intel makes monster CPUs though. I am sure behind the scenes in Intel's labs they got processors for mobile devices already and are finalizing them. But the speed would be great .

I'd happily pay 10% more for my device to get 1000% more I/O performance.
Agreed.
Ahh well, frustrating. Possibly the advent of a new flagship transformer may solve this.
How is the pad phone in this regard?

Ah, I see. Android isn't much of a multitasker as far as foreground applications go, so I wasn't sure how you could've been doing something else while watching a movie. I try to do as much as I can from the microSD card, which makes me kind of sad thinking about it

Indeed. Although, the Cortex-A15 chips look pretty good. The hardware virtualization extensions are especially interesting. It's not really practical without a good amount of RAM, but the prospect of running an x86 virtual machine at near native speed on my tablet makes me tingle with excitement!

Didn't realize they had gotten that cheap. Of course, you're also going to be paying for the SATA controller, and for some engineers to work it into the hardware and software design.

Heh, If ASUS cheaped out on the internal storage in the first place to maximize profits, what makes you think they're going to only charge you the "off-the-shelf" price for the additional hardware?

I don't think that these virtualization extensions magically make the ARM CPU run x86 code anywhere near native speed.
But these will:

If I can buy it "off the shelf" for amount X, that includes taxes, shipping, packaging, warranty, distributor's and ratailer margins - so a manufacturer should be easily able to get it for X/2. But I don't expect ASUS to build the device exactly as I want anyway...

True, I haven't been able to find much data yet on how the extensions compare to their x86 counterparts, but I would think they should do quite well. Is there any reason why the combination of QEMU and KVM wouldn't be able to pull this off?

I'm sure that it will work, but given that the Android emulator is quite slow even on a fast PC (emulating ARM on x86), I doubt that the inverse emulation on a less powerful CPU will be fast enough to run Windows (and I can't think of any other reason why one would want x86).

Ah. That one doesn't make use of the KVM for ARM virtualization. So, yes, it will run like a dog with no legs.
For now, I guess I'll have to play the wait-and-see game, but I'm hopeful that the geniuses that have made it possible for me to run two Linux systems and a Windows system on top of another Linux system with excellent performance for all four at the same time can make it happen. Although, I am realistic and know that x86 on ARM may not be quite as good as x86 on x86.
(It doesn't *have* to be Windows on the tablet by the way, running a full Linux stack in a virtual machine rather than dual-booting or chrooting or some other nonsense is appealing to me at least. )

Is the new Nvidia Tablet worth it??

Hi, I saw today that Nvidia are releasing a refreshed tablet, with the same specs, but just without some features.
It doesn't include the pen (even though you can buy one for 14.99£), it only comes in 16GB (MicroSD), and there is no usb and plug with it, for me that is fine because I have at least 5.
But the price!! Only £149.99 for pre-order (199$ I think). Nvidia is pretty new to me (apart from their graphics cards), so is it really worth it? I plan to use it for streaming apps (If I can still do that since it runs Android) and stream BO3 and FIFA 16 from my PC and play with the controller (49.99£)
So the question to you owners, is it worth the £149.99 or should I get a Tab S2 for £250.00?
Thanks

With the Tab S2 you will never get the performance you get with the Tegra K1. Have the Shield Tab and its great!

Thanks, I was hoping that the performance was better, even though the S2 had 3GB RAM (TouchWiz ruins it).
How different is the UI from Stock AOSP Lollipop, and does it still have the Play Store.
Sorry that I ask such stupid questions, I do not want to spend over 100 pounds on a item I am not familiar with.

Its not only Touchwiz, as i know the S2 hasn't the exynos 7420 like the s6, so everything else isn't as powerfull as the K1.The Shield runs stock Android 5.1.1 with sime little gimmiks from nvidia, i find it even better as pure stock. And 6.0 should arrive untill the und of the year, but isn't really sure if.
I have shield tablet 1 and I can clearing say its 100% stock just like a pure nexus device, a little bit of unnecessary apps, nothing major compared to touchwiz. You can always root and remove things if you want.
The tablet runs flawlessly hardly experienced any lag in apps or loading of apps, compare that to touchwiz phone or tab, you will get lag of some sort
My honest opinion is that it's a great tablet, probs the best I have had. I have streamed a few games eg, MK10 and Batman Origins, run great and smoothly.

Yes, I live with the struggle of Exynos and its development... Pure stock however sounds amazing. I am sure to get it now with the controller. £200 for the tablet with a controller, how convenient. Probably have to add another £20 for a 64GB Class 10 MicroSD Card...
Thank you for explaining everything At least this has CM.

It should be since it has the same hardware. It might need like a little patch but I'm pretty sure it'll still work
I know some people probably wanted an upgrade with the new tablet, rather than essentially the same thing, but I think it would still be a great buy at $199. That's just an outstanding price point (and really kills the used market for the first tablet, Swappa and eBay sellers must be pissed).
It's still one of the most powerful tablets out there. I assume they've worked out some of the hardware quirks from the first model, and even with the first model the software issues along the way (like the crappy 5.0 update) smoothed out with the last couple updates.

I called Nvidia and they say it's the same, so I cancelled my order and will wait on the improved version with better screen and processor
It's the screen that's bugging me on this thing...every review of the new and old one said that it was hard to see in daylight. My most common use is on the bus, so if I can't read it in daylight, it's of no use!
At the same time, my current tablet is the 2012 Nexus 7 and it looks like it might have a worse screen, so maybe this tablet is a screen upgrade?
Bugs me that they make this announcement out of nowhere. Means there could be an upgraded version just around the corner and we wouldn't know it...
I'm glad managed to sell my replaced tablet for £180. Btw the charger of the tablet is one of the bests stock charger I ever had.

Should I still buy one at today or is there a better alternative?
no better alternative with this price
I bought a nexus 9 2 weeks ago because there where no shield Tablet available. But I switched to the k1 and after 3 Days I'm still very happy to its the decision because yeah it saved a lot of money.

why nvidia use this processor caped to 32 bits? or this is what i know... and other tablets use the k1 with 64bits?
