Automatically turn off wifi toggle when leaving home? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there a way to have your wifi automatically turn off when you leave a particular wifi area?

Try juice defender from the play store they have an option for that, but I think you have to buy the ultimate version

Tasker.

*more info*
Its a 10 dollar app last i checked & its worth every penny.
I personally use Tasker to
Silence my phone during work hours
Turn up the Media volume when connected to Bluetooth then turn it down when i disconnect.
When connected to Bluetooth and not WiFi it will reply to All incoming SMS's telling the person I'm currently driving.
That's only scratching the surface of what Tasker can do.

[Q] Looking for automatic toggles

I can find plenty of apps that will turn on/off wifi based on GPS location, but I'd like to turn on/off GPS based on wifi connection. Is there an app out there (or combination of two apps) that will disable GPS when you are stationary and connected to a known wifi and then, once you disconnect/leave, it will turn on GPS and turn off Wifi? That way, the GPS location could turn on WiFi and connect to a known network and turn off GPS. Then, when you leave that location, it turns off the WiFi and turns back on the GPS. If the app(s) could also toggle sound profiles based on location/time, that would be great as well. I don't mind paying for the app, but free would be nice.
Try an app called auto WiFi enabler. It turns WiFi on when the network is in range. Works good for me that way I dnt have to turn on WiFi when I get home.

Tasker or Settings Profiles are your best bet for these. SP is easy to configure but Tasker is much much more powerful in its profiles. Tasker is my fave.

I pulled up the info on Tasker and, when I saw what all it could do, my eyes widened and a "WOW!" escaped from my dropped jaw. What an incredible app! I think I can get it and delete multiple other apps that I'd downloaded to do different things. Thanks so much for pointing me to this. Sent some "thanks" your way.

[Q] Is there a way to create a shortcut to my cellphone on the Xoom?

OK I know how to create a general shortcut, but what I am looking for is a way to create a shortcut to the BT connection to my cell. I have a WiFi only Xoom and when I am away from a hotspot I tether over BT to my cell. It would be great if I could make a shortcut so I would not have to go into settings>Bluetooth settings> etc. I use App Protector to password protect my settings page so what would normally take 6 clicks takes 10. A one click option sure would be nice.
Tasker. 'When Wifi not connected, connect bluetooth to device'
Thanks for the reply, but I do not want it to automatically tether. That would drastically reduce my cell phone battery life.

I haven't messed with my tasker lately, but I think you can add a widget to activate certain profiles.

WiFi tethering would mean I have to do something with the phone to make it work. The beauty of the BT tether is that I never have to touch my phone. As long as bluetooth is on, I can simply connect from the Xoom and I am good.
Also for some reason I have had much better luck with the BT tethering. It seems the WiFi hotspot feature on my phone will shut off if there is too long of an idle time. I tried playing with the settings but still had issues where I had to restart it. BT tethering seems to be very stable.

I have found it to be worth the money just in battery savings on my Epic.
Have it scheduled to turn off Mobile Data, and turn on wifi from 8-11:30, Data back on at 11:30-12:30 and Wifi on 12:30-5.
For my Milestone2 I could see where this would help with battery life a bit, but since this is a WiFi only Xoom I am having a hard time figuring out what else I could automate.
Since you are a user of Tasker, could I make a profile that would do the following?
-If there is no WiFi connection AND the screen is on connect via BT to cellphoneXXX.
-Once the screen goes off disconnect BT connection.
If I could set that up then I would be ok with it automatically connecting to my cell phone. I just do not want it sucking up battery power on my cell for background syncing of email, etc. Most of the day my Xoom has a WiFi connection so it is not that big of a deal.

[REQ] Tasker Bluetooth profile?

Hey guys, trying to wrap my head around Tasker. Bought it a while back but got scared off by it
I currently use Greenpower Premium to manage my bluetooth connection, but it's such a bulky way to do it considering I don't use any of the "battery saving" features.
What I would like is
a) Bluetooth to turn on when connected to a power source
b) Bluetooth to disconnect after 5 minutes if NOT connected to a device.
The only caveat of point B is point A takes priority, so even if not connected to a device, but connected to a power source, bluetooth stays on. It's for use in my car.
Any help for a Tasker noob? Cheers :highfive:

your A is very easy to do (as evidenced by a novice like me messing around with it until it worked), you'll just have to go into each setting for the basic profile.
B, no clue... i've never tried it, but i can't think of a reason it'd be that difficult.
If this is all you want Tasker to do try out an app called Bluetooth Auto Connect. Your Profile A should really be easy to program(porofle/state/power/any:taskaction/net/bluetooth on) while your Profile B there is actually a profile you can download from the Tasker site then import into Tasker. It's set at 15 minutes but you can change it.
Here is the way I interpreted
A) make profile under state>power>power(any or ac). The make a task setting Bluetooth on under "net." Go back to profiles and press and hold the new task you made and select add exit task. You can put set Bluetooth off when it disconnected from power source.
B) state>net>Bluetooth connected. Task set Bluetooth on or whatever, then add an exit task under task>wait>5 min then set Bluetooth off. Unlink the start task with the green arrow cause unless you want a notification saying whatever when connected, I don't see any use for an enter task.

So we need a Tasker thread for Verizon Galaxy Note 4, with out Root.
Always fun to see others ideas on Tasker Profiles, here are mine.
Please share your Tasker Profiles.
WIFI Starter
WIFI Stopper
These both work with 5 tasks, and use cell tower to check for WIFI then start or stop. Found this on WIKI.
Auto Off Unpaired Bluetooth
This will turn off Bluetooth if I just kill the headset. Found this on WIKI.
Headset Plugged Any
I use headset plug in my car, sure Bluetooth is nice, maybe i'm old but I still get better flow just plugging in.
On any headset plugged it checks to see if am by or connected to any of my WIFI points first.
Then if not it sets; open music player (player set to resume play), mute sounds so they don't bug me while i'm listening to my music, Display to 30 second time out, and Media volume to level 14
The media volume is great because Samsung or Google Kit Kat has a pop-up that tells you you are setting sound high, and it can hurt your ears. With this setting that pop-up never goes off.
On headset remove the exit task reverts all. I made this myself.
Received Text While Driving
Checks i'm not near or connected to any of my WIFI points, checks for headset plugged in, any text received, and moving over 5 MPH. If all met send reply text "(AUTO) I'm currently driving. Will respond to you when I can safely."
Found on WIKI and made some adjustments myself.
WIFI Connected Home Unlock (needs Local Password Lock Plug-in)
On connect to my home WIFI checks MAC #, then using plug-in sets lock to 3 hours. On exit it sets lock back to 30 seconds. I made this myself.
WIFI all Beep On Connect
Set to make a low quick beep when connected to one of my WIFI's. Set to make high quick beep on disconnect. I made this myself.
http://tasker.wikidot.com/profile-index
I like this thread idea! I haven't put tasker on my new phone yet, but on my last one I had the following profiles:
Auto silence/vibrate all ring tones when I connect to my work wifi
Auto max all volumes when I connect to my home wifi
Auto dim screen to lowest brightness setting at 2am (so I don't blind myself when I look at my phone in the middle of the night or morning)
I had just gotten started, but I really liked the home automation possibilities. I want to create one that checks when I join my home wireless network to see if it's between 4p-6p on Monday - Friday, and if so, open my garage door and unlock my back door
Sent from my SM-N910V using XDA Free mobile app
I just use one profile, a must have for me. When I get in my car and the Bluetooth is connected, I have Tasker turn WiFi off and start spotify. It turns WiFi back on and kills spotify when the car is turned off.

The only one I have running right now uses Tasker, IFTTT, and PebbleTasker to control my WeMo light switches from my Pebble Watch. There is a IFTTT channel to use a text message to turn on and off your Wemos so i have a taker task to text the special command to the IFTTT phone number. Then all i had to do was link that task to Pebble tasker and now I can hit a button on my watch and turn on my lights.
On my S4 and S5 I had another profile that would turn off lock screen security when my Pebble was attached to bluetooth. Unfortunately, without root I am unable to replicate that on my N4. I also had one using my bank's text banking to receive my balances via text from the Tasker on my Pebble.

That is awesome news. I will have to try that. The novelty of the fingerprint reader is starting to wear off so I would love to go back to watch unlock.
Edit: Got it to work with a PIN. Just couldn't make the fingerprint or pattern lock due to lack of root.
I tried using LED Controller, but it's causing me all kind of bad settings, will have to uninstall it
The tasker profile I like and use is to enable GPS and turn GPS off when launching Google Maps... I also have one that enables NFC and turns NFC off upon launching and closing Google Wallet

How did you get the Wifi Starter Stopper to work because it sure as hell is not working for me....The task is green, its just not turning the Wifi On...If I turn the Wifi on itself manually, then it switches to the Wifi Stopper task, seems to me it doesnt work. Any help would be great...Do we keep the * around the SSID of the Wifi broadcast?

First grab this on the wiki, it includes 5 tasks and 2 profiles. In the wifi starter profile have it search for cell tower, as I add new locations I cut all i have in there, do a new search, then add the others back.
then in the task wifi checks params under varable set add your wifi name, yes leave the astrix and add a forward slash between multiple wifi locations. *bobwifi*/*tomwifi*/*frankwifi*
then here is the trick, once back on wifi checks params and then click play once to get things going, then back out of tasker and move in and out of your location.
NFC on on wallet app is awesome idea, thanks man!
I ended up doing this, NFC on/open Wallet. No exit task as I like to go back to see my purchase. Having it auto-open is great though, as I used to turn on NFC then find wallet and open.

Sorry further review is showing that you need root.
However, there is no need to, you should simply turn GPS on and leave it. Android works fine with this and when not in use it does not run, it is not always checking GPS unless you have some app asking for GPS location running.

And if I send my self a message it turns mute mode off. (with a certain phrase) I got it to work with default message but don't know how to make it work with chompsms :/ I've asked around but no response really. Thanks for your time.

Whats the value of Wifi on a Gear S3 if you have your phone with you?

I believe the point of having Wifi at all on the gear S3 is so that your phone can continue to talk to your gear via the Samsung account over the internet (assuming both devices are on and connected to the internet over wifi)
Is this the only use case for Wifi being turned on?
Does this scenario only cover alerts, or will it also support calls texts and emails?

The two devices will talk to each other whether wifi is turned on or off. Wifi comes in handy for apps like Spotify so you don't have to use up your data and apps like Kodi gear where you can control multimedia through your watch .

In Wifi mode you will keep receiving all kind of notifications including text, missing calls etc., but you can't make/receive phone call over wifi. Currently phone call over wifi is not available on this watch.
If you always have your phone with you (by definition this means within BT range) there is no reason to use WiFi. There is nothing that can be done via WiFi that can't be done via BT. But the reverse is not true.
So basically if you have your phone with you at all times, its a complete waste of battery. Turned off. Cheers.

I'm totally unclear on the purpose of Wifi on this watch! I turned off Bluetooth to use Wifi and it can't connect because the of "sign-in procedure not supported"! Does that mean it can only connect to an open network??? Those really don't exist these days.
Why is there such a big discussion about wifi on this watch? The watch has wifi because Samsung wanted to put it in there and most of us are grateful. Do you want a smart watch without wifi? Again, there are apps like Spotify that it is better to be on wifi instead of GSM, depending on what network you use.

No it can connect password protected networks, my watch is connected to my home wifi right now, password protected ofc. Try changing encryption protocol(i'm on TKIP+AES) of your access point or try to connect to another access point.

Lol, if i turn off password protection on my home network, then my neighbors will start using my Wifi! I can't believe Samsung overlooked this!! I'll just wait for a possible update???
I can confirm that it should connect to a wifi protected network. I use WPA2-PSK and it connects fine to my router.

The discussion is because people want to understand the uses of their watch. Having it is nice, but there aren't too many use case scenarios for it. Most of the time where WiFi is available, the phone will be close at hand and connected via BT. Streaming music (over WiFi or otherwise) is a very limited application because of the battery drain. If/when moreb Tizen apps are developed for the watch, using WiFi may become practical.
At home i do leave my phone in 1 place, keep my S3 on yes moving around its always BT, but moving further around the house when BT drops the WIFI takes over.
Also once i forgot my phone at home, but when i reached the gym (was registered for their WIFI) i still got my notifications etc.
But all in all no much use, but i left it on as could not discern much battery loss with it being on.
you have to sync the wifi from your phone to the watch then it will just connect.. look on the gear app settings> gear connection > Sync wi-fi profiles..
It's not about giving a use for WiFi all the time. Most of the time WiFi should be off to conserve battery. It is more about the one off scenarios like you forgot your phone at home, but you can connect to WiFi at work and tell your wife you are alive through a text... or for the tizen app developer, to test apps on your watch you need to connect to the watch via wifi... or for spotify.. there are several reasons to have it, but still it should be off Moore often than not

Well GWD needs the watch and PC connected to the same network (wifi) to get the faces from one place to another. Unless you get it into a store maybe, but having it on wifi is handy to test things out as you add them and modify themes.
Just to share my opinion. In my work I’m not allowed to have the phone with me. So the solution to continue receiving my notifications are through WiFi, and it works perfectly.
Streaming music from Spotify on my watch over Wifi.

WiFi (WiFi Direct) is also used for syncing Images, songs and large apps over to your watch; these would otherwise take lots of time over Bluetooth.
After last update there is no connection via wifi with my phone.. Does someone experienced the same issue?
