[Q] HTC Desire S: Unable to install updated rom - General Questions and Answers

Hi all, I just got my Desire S this week after suffering through a SE X10 Mini Pro for ages.
I was keen to root my phone as the previous one practically required rooting and a custom rom to be useful.
I was able to successfully root the Desire S with no issue following the instructions to S-OFF the phone and then installed CWM Recovery via fastboot recovery image flash and used CWM Recovery to install the su tools.
However, not 2 days later and the phone is advertising an official system update. As I'm quite happy with the stock rom (It's functional, unlike the SE ones) I wanted to proceed. I let the update download and clicked install.
The phone then proceeded to reboot into CMW and displayed an error about being unable to open the update zip. I checked and realised the update had been placed in /sdcard/downloads/ rather than the root of the sdcard so I tried manually installing the zip from there. CWM was unable to install the zip and displayed the following output in the log:
Starting recovery on Sat Apr 14 14:07:08 2012
can't open /dev/tty0: No such file or directory

Does anyone have any idea what this error means? Is there actually an error in the zipfile or is something else wrong?

Bump

Hi, I have the same problem when i try to update my old stock ROM. Did you get it to work?

Long story short: If you've unlocked your phone and rooted it you can not install the official over-the-air updates. You will have to install an unofficial firmware like fallout or endymion.

What I did is just modifying TC5-RC8 update.zip with test key, and do the update as normal.
I've been using RC8 for couple days since it's been released and no problem.
After this problem occurd, I've tried to re-flash it to the origianl TC5-RC8 update.zip which released by JesusFreke. BUT the problem still.
My guess is flash recovery.img when booting due to some hardware issues.

I finally do a update to and old version of my modified TC5-RC8, the phone booted.
The bad news is I do recovered it to factory mode, so I need to login to Google account again.
Unfortunately, when I finished the Login, and ready to press "Finish setup" and move(dont know how to express in English that movement, the screen is open, what I do is close it so it covers the keyboard) the the screen, and exception occured: "com.google.process.gapps has stopped..."
Don't know whether google will check its own sign or not, im using the test key.

[Q] Android 4.0.4 and high cpu usage of system_server with autorotate on

Hi,
i have nexus S with IMM76D_deodexed. I had preciously 4.0.3, then 4.0.4 - IMM26. Now IMM76D, CWM.
With IMM76D I hoped all will be solved, but not.
before updating to IMM76D I did:
back to factory reset
format SD card
clean Dalvik
clean /system except /boot
Now i think, I'm only one, who has infamous autotate high cpu usage bug
- without autorotate (cpu usage is normal):
Code:

Hey dude,
No, you are not the only one with the auto-rotate bug. I have it too, but im on stock, non rooted ICS 4.0.4 for the Nexus S. But I can't help you either
Just wanted you to know that you are not alone.
what are the symptoms of this bug? every since i loaded 4.0.4, my phone seems to be eating up battery like crazy, also freezing up and shutting off randomly. sounds like it could be my problem.
should i just disable the auto-rotate setting for now?

It's worth a try, you can't damage anything if you do
I've been using the attached patch (against the stock ICS 3.0 kernel source, but should apply to any Nexus S 2.6.35 ICS or 3.0 kernel), which throttles the orientation sensor device and reduces system_server CPU usage to a more reasonable 2-3% (similar to Gingerbread).
Thanks for confirmation.
based on the confirmation there is new bug from me:
xxxttp://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=29965
For quick autorotate on and off i'm using quick app:
xxxttps://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.friedflow.autorotate&feature=order_history
Thanks for the kernel patch... but i think, i will not building kernel...
i don't understand, why these bugs are not fixed yet... Like USB slow file transfer...

How's this patching working out for you? Any side effects to watch out for? Also, did you find anything more refined along the way?
Thanks!

I've been carrying this patch since December with absolutely no ill effects, and given that it works, I haven't bothered to look for better solutions ...

Any hints how to apply this patch?

How configure the phone to use the internal memory on bricked DesireS?

I have bricked EMMC chip on my HTC Desire S, but bootloader and recovery working in readonly mode. I created the partition table on the external memory card (Micro SD), similar to the structure of internal memory in the extended partition. I modified the init.saga.rc in boot.img for using new partitions on sdcard. After booting over fastboot, I got a working phone
But i need help to configure the phone to use the internal memory, 1st partition on sdcard mmcblk1p1(vold/179:65 - fat32) or /data partition for DCIM, Music and etc.
I see several solutions, but do not know how to do:
1. "/data" partition, like /data/Documents...
2. Automounting through DirectVolume manager 1st partion on sd
3. Mount through init.rc, but system cant find STORAGE
4. Make 2nd storage like PHONE_STORAGE/INTERNAL_STORAGE
5. ?????

Bootloop & Dalvik Cache Wipe failed

Hello friends,
I'm stumped. Don't know what to do anymore.
Im am not new to rooting/modding but I am at a point now where I can't help myself.
I had CM10 running on my HOS and wanted to go back to Stock. So I relocked the Bootloader and started flashing my device. Unfortunately it didn't work and ended with the Errorcode 155 (as far as i can remember).
From there on nothing worked anymore. I think i got the HTC logo and then a black screen.
So i unlocked the Bootloader again and put CWR on it. I wanted to put CM ROM on it via adb put but didn't work. "Device not found".
So, after that i flashed TWRP and mounted my external storage so i could put the ROM on it. But didn't work. Windows said I had to format it. So i formatted it with FAT32. After that i was able to put ROM and gapps on it. Finally I was able to flash the ROM and gapps. That did work. I wanted to wipe Dalvik Cache but it said "Failed". Rebooted into Fastboot and did fastboot flash boot boot.img
I took boot.img out of the CM-Zip File.
Wiping external storage also failed.
Does anyone have a clue what is going on? How can i fix it?
I got a log from clockwork. Hope anyone can do something with it.

looks like it's not mounting mmpcblk0p35 which is /data. I'm curious about the line '/datadata'..
You can cause some pain with TWRP and wiping, you can wipe a mount point. Maybe a contributing factor to a failed install? I would boot to TWRP and install the ROM again and then reboot.
I tried several times installing the ROM from scratch via both CWM and TWRP. Didn't work. Still stuck on CM animation.
So I finally got my phone running again. However no stock rom, "just" CM10.1.
I did a factory reset with TWRP to do a formatting of the partitions. After that I flashed CM10.1-Nightly and the corresponding boot.img
...I tried again to install the stock RUU (with relocked bootloader) but still getting Error-155.
So i'm on CM10.1. Not too bad

great job. as you get more devious in breaking your phone, you get better at fixing it CM10.1 rocks, everything is working for me on it.
Unless your planing on selling the phone, I'm not sure why you'd want to use any RUU's (or any OTA/Vendor stuff). Your now managing the software on your phone not the telco/HTC. For sure you do a better job!
Got Stuck into BOOTLOOP
I am running Noir A2 Lite, with Spreadtrum chip SP8810. I am stucked into Bootloop, and I am fully sure it is due to not clearing Dalvik-cache.
I was setting up the low internal memory issue with ext3 partition of Sdcard method using Pimk Rom, BusyBox etc. Everything was fine and in the end I got the internal memory increased but the phone was working slow so I thought to get back to the previous state where my genuine internal phone memory was existing. So I just done the RESET FACTORY from Settings of phone. After that it rebooted and still keeps rebooting again and again. I searched on the causes of BOOTLOOP and came to know it might happen due to not clearing DELVIK-CACHE.
Phone is rooted D Of course), and I can't boot into Recovery Mode, I don't know why because since I rooted I wasn't able to get into recovery mode by pressing any key combinations. But I can go into fastboot by pressing VOL+ and POWER button together.
Can you suggest me any way to resolve this problem?
Regards!!

Same happened to me. Have you managed to fix this issue?
anyone found solution?
same happened to me too. i've tried removing the digitizer, but i don't think the problem is in digitizer. when it's connected i can see touchscreen: ili2113a in factory mode. when i disconnect the digitizer, i can see touchscreen: (null)
so digitizer should be working. i've tried flashing like 15 roms, but didn't manage to fix the problem.
anyone found a solution?
