That's what I said when I got my Nexus One about 6 months after it's release (gave it time for the price to drop a bit). But a year later, here I am buying a Nexus S (once again, 6 months after it's release).
Originally, I wasn't impressed with the NS at launch as compared to the N1 at launch, because it really didn't seem like the difference was big enough. N1 was a monster, with very few devices living up to its specs at the time. With the NS, however, processor speed was the same (although the difference between Snapdragon and Hummingbird is a little bigger than it appears on paper). NFC wasn't too important to me. The screen was only a third of an inch bigger - same resolution. And not being made by HTC left a tiny bit of heartbreak, but I can understand that Google is trying to give everyone a chance (or so it seems).
When it comes right down to it, and as much as the development community is still going strong, I started getting bored of the N1 and ultimately decided to upgrade. And now, less than a month after getting the NS, I am very happy with that decision. Sure, I had a couple issues along the way (NS radios are horrible) but I've overcome this little weakness. And yes, I do miss my little N1 though, but it's been put in a good home for another tech-lover to enjoy while I move on up.
So while it may sound a bit redundant to say I may skip the next Nexus device, I've already proven that the original intention doesn't always live up to what happens in reality. While I may say right now that I'm willing to skip a version, only time will tell.
In my opinion, the Nexus devices are the benchmark of Android and that's what the Nexus brand is all about. Upgrade or not, be happy knowing you're a part of the Nexus family. They're all great phones, and always will be.
TLDR version: Loved my N1. Love my NS. Will love the next Nexus too. Google knows what they're doing, and I'm sure we'll be happy with whatever makes it to market

Exactly the same story here. Just upgraded to the Nexus S from the N1, and only because I got bored with it and its touchscreen. Miss the trackball notifications, but nothing else.

If these specs are right the CPU will use the same GPU but clocked much higher. There was a similar OMAP 4 used in the LG 3d that had our GPU but clock higher and that one was a bit faster, this one is clocked even higher..
What's interesting is that its the same GPU. I'm guessing that they did this to make the hw acceleration a easy job for the NS and nexus prime. Only one set of.drivers would need to be baked in.

+1 to that. It's all speculated rumors anyway.
hard to swallow that samsung would make the device and use anything but their newest dual core which has been beating the competition hands down
I hope they are all running vanilla Android. I'll probably stick with the Nexus line though since they get updates first.

I hope it's available on all the major carriers. Even better is release them at the same time in whatever country so that some of us won't miss out on all the fun and have to wait. I hope sprint starts going to lte and it has that on board too. Nfc, pfft! I could care less about that. I turn it off or disable it anyway.
How about the next one having infrared and rf remote control capabilities built in. Instead of having that obnoxious ass camera led, why not infrared led? Oh wait, that's only good for monochrome pictures, right? I'm trying to think of widely useful hardware features that most other phones don't have.
How about infrastructure wireless tether mode? I think the evo was one of the few that had that.
Give us back our damned micro sd slot and put it on the side of the phone, not under the battery or require to remove the battery cover.
Try to put the power and volume buttons in a spot that won't make an accidental button push on the opposite side of the phone happen because of the natural way people hold a phone and where their fingers rest. A top power button would be fine.
If it's Samsung making the next phone, QUIT MOVING THE GOD DAMNED BACK, MENU, SEARCH AND HOME KEY PLACEMENT AROUND!!! Almost every Samsung device has those buttons playing musical chairs. When you get used to the button placement of one device, the next one has them moved around. How many of you hit the wrong buttons when using different Samsung devices?
How about put multi colored leds as the bottom buttons illumination? You can set them to whatever color you want for different kinds of notifications. You don't need a separate notifications light, think of the track ball of the HTC nexus.
How about a video camera that can do 720p @ 30fps no sweat or hiccups?
How about a lanyard loop at the top center of the side of the phone. Not on a corner. Incognito filming mode...
Extended life battery that will get you all day of heavy usage on a single charge and let it be the battery that comes with the phone, not extra. You can't find decent cases when you have an extended life battery. I don't care if the phone is a little bit thicker, I want substantially more battery life.

Would love to see a phone that would work on any carrier. Alas, our CDMA brethren (Sprint and Verizon) make that really difficult

I personally don't care about an SD card. I doubt Google does either. Their entire philosophy is built around moving everything to the cloud. This is a company that killed their G-Drive "Dropbox-like" service before it started because "files are so 1990's."

I don't mind them on the sides, but I think they should be on opposite sides. If I'm holding in my right hand, I would like volume up/down by my thumb, and power on/off either by my index finger or as you said, up top. With volume on the other side, you can use volume button as camera shutter button with phone in correct orientation

I don't think either of these will be a problem since all indication is that the next release of Android will not require hardware buttons, and the next generation mobile devices will not have them.

I honestly think people expect too much here. Filming good HD video is tough even on dedicated equipment. The amount of processing power required to encode that on the fly (or alternatively, the amount of storage space required to store unencoded HD video) is prohibitive on a mobile device with today's technology. You'll either get lower resolution and better performance, or higher resolution with ****ty compression and lower framerates. Hopefully technology in this area improves in the near future.

My Nexus lasts all day no problem. Some people use GPS all day, use their mobile as their main media device, etc. and they don't make it all day. I dunno. These phones today are as powerful as laptops. You seen any laptop batteries that fit the mobile profile lately? Science just aint there yet. Hopefully with Li-Ion and other batteries being used in EVs these days (an exploding industry) major breakthroughs will occur in battery technology.

The cloud can eat a **** as long as carriers have "unlimited" data, caps and throttling. 16GB built in is more than enough for normal stuff, but I want to be able to toss in large sd cards to indiscriminately hold music and movies without having to pick and choose.
If Samsung makes it, I hope they put more effort into it than this one. I get the impression that some things about the ns were done half assed.

No LED is the one thing that pi**ed me off. No keys must mean more screen space. 4.3" is perfect IMO. Gonna skip the prime and wait for Nexus 4. Gonna get ice cream on the NS anyway.

Hi everyone,
I'm a longtime lurker in these forums, and I'd love some advice on phone options.
I'm a Verizon Wireless customer, and for some specific reasons, have to stay that way.
My current phone is a Droid 2 Global. It's my first Android device. Previously, I had Windows Mobile, for phones and PDAs, dating all the way back to when it was called Windows CE.
I'm happy-ish with Android, and plan on staying with Android for now, but it's time to upgrade, and I'd like to do it while I can still stay on my grandfathered unlimited data plan (so anytime between now and the next 3-4 months).
I'd like to get a phone I'll be happy with for the next 2 years, so I'd like to have some future-facing features, like high resolution and NFC, in addition to enough RAM to run today's software and tomorrow's.
My current phone, the D2G, running the stock rom and the .629 update, is slow like a turtle moving through molasses. It once wasn't this way, and it's not overloaded with apps, but it's a situation I'd like to avoid in the future.
So, in my next phone, I'm looking for the following, and I can't seem to find a phone that has all of these features:
-removable, easily replaceable battery (so I can carry around more than one)
-global (GSM/HSPA) capability
-physical keyboard
-1 GB RAM or more
-dual core processor (or better)
-4G LTE
-ICS + moderately decent upgrade schedule for future releases
-NFC
-1280x720 screen
No phone matches all of these. The three phones that come closest are:
1. HTC Rezound: no physical keyboard or NFC
2. Samsung Galaxy Nexus: no physical keyboard or global capability
3. Droid 4: non-removable battery, no NFC, no 1280x720 screen
I travel internationally a couple of times a year, but not more frequently, so I suppose that I could just keep my current phone (the D2G, which is SIM-unlocked) for world-roaming purposes, and use it when I travel.
I've had a physical keyboard for a long time - my last 5 phones have had one, and I type much faster on it. I could give it up, but don't really want to.
I feel like NFC is a serious want-to-have, not for today, but for 12 months from now, when it'll be convenient and more common.
I want the higher resolution 1280x720 screen. I don't HAVE to have it, but when buying a phone for 2 years, it seems like it'd be foolish not to get it.
The other thing that tempts me is that it seems like we have phones with quad-core processors just around the corner - is it worth waiting a few more months to get one? My single core D2G was the fastest phone out there when I got it about two years ago, and now it's one of the absolute slowest - does it make sense to go dual core when quad cores are here?

Should I just bite the bullet and get the Galaxy Nexus, and travel globally with my slow-as-molasses D2G? Or should I saddle up with the Droid 4 and its sad screen, forget about replacing the battery, and live near a charger at all times? Or maybe just wait until something cooler comes out from around the corner?

Wait a couple weeks for the S3 and either use your D2G for global use, or buy an incredible 2 or Droid 3 for global use on the cheap. Physical keyboard is worthless now, as screen sizes coupled with amazing auto correct software make touchscreen keyboards a breeze and an obvious choice.

I honestly love the Nexus. It's sexy and snappy. I bought one for my wife. I don't think the SIII will be harder to root than the Nexus. Your call really. The SIII will be newer and the "it" phone for a while, but the Nexus is still very capable and is gonna be way cheaper right now. You can probably get a Nexus for about $100 on contract as long as you avoid corporate Verizon stores. They will rape you on price and give you **** service. Check Costco or Best Buy in your area. They'll be cheaper on both devices than a Verizon store.

one thing I would say about the resolution is that its a bit of a marketing ploy.
once you start getting above WVGA resolutions unless you perch the device on your nose its quite hard to tell the difference.
Whats more important is actually the screen tech, I can promise you that a decent panel at a lower res will look a lot better than a cheap or average panel with a high res.
Will time make a difference? nope, not unless you become very short sighted and actually have the device on the end of your nose
To be honest id agree with you on the NFC thing, if your set on keeping it for a few years it would be worth it, but that's a relatively newish tech hitting the markets, might be worth holding back a few months until Q3 12 to see whats in the pipe line. A lot more NFC devices will be coming out, one of them is bound to tick more of your boxes....

Coming from Sprint, I don't really know about Verizon's phones..
However,
Physical Keyboards are a dying breed. Most of these phones will be bulky and have bigger batteries or shorter battery life.
Currently typing this on my Galaxy Nexus, I highly recommended this phone.
Yes, there are only soft buttons (sans the power and volume), but its definitely future tech.
Amazing resolution (the screen has mfc defects, but they're often overlooked)
LTE, HSPA, GSM
And I do believe it has a place for your SIM card (Sprint doesn't use sim cards, so I'm not sure)
The phones extremely thin, light battery, and has a nice feeling curved glass and battery cover.
Great battery life once you unlock it and flash a battery mod.

I know that you guys probably see dozens of these kinds of threads from confused geeks like me who just can't make up their minds, but I'm really stuck here. I've been up for hours reading about all of the handsets on the market right now and I just can't settle on one option that I like the best for my situation. I'm hoping that some of the more experienced users can help me out on this.
For context, I've been using an HTC Desire for the past two years no problem. I love the phone, but it is showing it's age and the internal memory is an issue. So I would like to get a new one, that can last me at the very least two more years. My budget is around 600 dollars.
I live in Canada, so the situation with carriers is pretty bad. I'm currently on Telus (HSPA+) and would prefer to own my phone so that I can bypass this whole contract crap and negotiate better prices for my monthly bills.
Anyways, boiled down, this is what I'm looking for:
Compatible with Telus HSPA+ Network (Rogers is a plus)
Either a MicroSD slot or 32+ onboard storage
At least 24 hours of battery life on a single charge
Decent performance, don't really play games but would like a lag free interface
Healthy hacking community
Good build quality and durability. It should be able to take a fall
Flash camera. Camera quality is a negligible factor but I use the flashlight every day.
Out of all of the devices I've seen thus far, I'm leaning most towards the OneX+. But I've also looked at the Galaxy Nexus and liked it as well. There is also the SGS3 but I think that phone is really ugly and don't really like it. Choices... choices... can I hear a voice of reason here?
What do you think about a Motorola Atrix 4G. It have a dual-core CPU (1Ghz), 16Go of internal memory + MicroSD slot up to 32Go. HSPA+ compatible, a great assembly quality with Kevlar. A high-capacity battery (more than one day of autonomy). A good healthed developers community.
I think it's the best phone for your requirements. It's not the all brand new smartphone, but you'll keep it for a longtime if you take care of it

I hadn't though of that one actually. From the looks of it, everything that I want is there. However, from the development pages, it looks like Motorola is being quite active in suppressing the hacking community, especially by not providing them graphics drivers which leads to numerous bugs in ICS and JB. That might be a deal breaker for me unless an Atrix4G owner can weigh in and clear my suspicions.
Note 2 if that isn't too big for u! Idk y u don't like s3 but 20million + people who bought it can't go wrong! and u oughtta sacrifice somethin to gain somethin! Just sayin. Ur wish! And BTW one x + is great. Isn't nexus4 there? Cuz nexus is already too old!
Ps - and don't ever think of buying moto. I myself own an atrix2. They r too unresponsive / ignorant about their customers. Worst OEM ever. And they have everything locked down (bootloader), so not really much of development!

The Note2 is far to big for my tiny hands, haha. The reason I don't like the S3 is because of the garish chamfered edges and the design that basically screams "no we aren't copying apple" while not offering any real inspired design. It's just too unrelentingly samsung. While Moto might be the worst OEM, I think samsung is pretty close.
Nexus 4 is out of the question because of it's pathetic amount of internal storage and no MicroSD slot. Also it is basically a glass enclosed phone so it won't have the durability of something like the one x+.
Honestly, I think I am going to go with the One X+ because it seems that it has the best internal battery, great specs, though I will probably hobble it a bit for extra battery life with a more efficient kernel. Also it seems that it could survive re-entry into the atmosphere with that fused ceramic/metal enclosure.
Then again... I might just go with the S3. I mean it is butt ugly but it has everything that I want in a phone. MicroSD, removable battery, nice screen, hacking community... damn. It's really not making it easy on my that the phone costs 150 dollars less than the OneX+. Plus the button is on the side as opposed to the top, which is nice.

man all this screams SGS3 and your better off getting it. everyone has said how much they love it. I would avoid htc though, theyve been changing for the worse...
This is likely to be first time in 7 years i haven't upgraded my phone upon a handset refresh.
I'm a terrible phone whore with very little loyalty to brand, i like to own the best phone of the moment and hop between manufacturers. I'd imagine most people on here do the same, with the exception of the insanely irreverent fanboys. Recently (Last 2 years) i've owned.. S2, iPhone 4S, S3, HTC One X and Nexus 4. (Also throw in a couple of dips to Sony and Windows Mobile for brief periods).
First of all, the S4 and the HTC One look like cracking devices. In my eyes they both have positives and negatives and if push came to shove and somebody forced me by gunpoint to pick one, i'd be hard pressed to make a decision.. Perhaps S4 but only because of the battery life and timely updates.. There really is little in it.. Anyone who thinks so is only splitting hairs.
If you're sat using an S2 or a mobile a good 2 years old i can truly appreciate what a jump that the S4 or HTC One to be for you. But if you're the kind of person who upgrades over a 12 month period, there really is little to excite at the moment.
I can't help but feel disappointing..
CPU:
This is the most frustrating topic... We've been steadily increasing in power with little gains in power management, Nvidia tried their best with that '5th core' but ultimately left us all wanting... I'd say the biggest single concern for most smartphone users is battery life now, struggling to make it through a heavy day is part and parcel of owning a mobile.
We are so very close to big.LITTLE kicking in and it seems to be that Samsung and HTC kicked off a little early, shown by the (almost complete) lack of availability of their Exynos variant..
If i bought the S4 or HTC One i'd feel almost cheated if the rumored battery performance of the upcoming CPUs in this segment are anything to go by.
Screen:
Mobile phone addiction aside, one of my other rather 'nerdy' fascination is with audio visual kit, much to my wifes misery.. Screen quality is undoubtedly a big thing for me, yet even i struggle to justify the move from a 720p resolution to a 1080p resolution on a screen only 4.7-5" big..
I've seen the HTC One in person and while i will confess at close proximity i can distinguish the difference, it is by no means the jump the market departments of said companies would like you to think.. I'd go as far to say that most (myself included) would struggle to notice the difference between the two during regular daily use.
LTE:
This is less the mobile manufacturers fault and more the networks but 4G coverage is absolutely woeful when you consider the mass rollout of hardware to utilize. I always thought the S3 LTE was pointless but was convinced this was the early warning sign the governments / networks needed to shift into gear, it doesn't appear to have happened. It's like giving everybody a Bugatti Veyron and telling them they're only allowed to drive it in speed limited residential areas..
I've got friends in the states and U.K and despite the rather gut-wrenching price they pay for LTE price plans, the performance seems poor. I do think we are a good year away from 4G being a realistic benefit to the average consumer, with small pockets of countries experiencing early gains if they live in the capital.
The only positive i can take away from all this is my other half does not have to watch me trawl through reviews, debate the best deal and then watch me giddy on the day of delivery...
Here's hopping next year is a little better!

@OP ( dont wanna quote the whole post lol), trust me when i say that i am one of the biggest phone junkies around, i owned almost all of the flagship of 2012 and plan on owning quite a few in 2013. I see what you're saying when you say " meh" cause phones like the nexus 4, S3, Optimus G and note 2 are already mighty powerful but i think this is where samsung and HTC lead the pack and differentiate themselves with other brands. HTC came out with the best design a phone ever had ( in my opinion) and fantastic sound quality while samsung is expanding its crazy awesome features ( gimmicky for some, absolutely great for me). Its hard to outdo the great phones that came out last year so my question is what did you expect?
I think you need to find more hobbies/occupations in your life tbh.
But to be honest, we are at a point where technology, and especially phones are improving at a very systematical and incremental ways.

Yeah, but with all that, there's a lot that's looked over. Like if you have a Samsung Smart TV you can stream what is on your TV to your phoen anywhere you go.
We now have a IR controller with a built in TV Guide. Built in reminder to remind you also. Links to Rotten Tomatoes for movies.
There's a lot more. I just don't know what is revolutionary anymore. The problem is other technology has to catch up, like TVs, Amplifiers and audio receivers, car GPS, etc. The only thing the phone can do now is control and interact with other things.
What can honestly be revolutionary with current technology and our phones now?
How about work on voice call clarity. This quality has been the same Damn thing since the nokia brick phones lol

The thing is in a day I make max 20 min call time but day in day out 4+hours screen time, iyam this is the norm so this dictates developments, so I bet we get stuck with ok call quality.

I know but how about getting a different phone if your prime use is phoning, like a 2g that'll give you 2/3 days, or if you're making calls while indoors plug it in or use a land line, flagship smartphones are computing devices not really phones any more.

While I agree that the upgrades in the GS4 are barely a full generation ahead of the GS3, which is unfortunate given how much a jump the GS2 was over the GS1, and how much the GS1 was ahead of anything else at its time... there is a sort-of point about diminishing returns here as well. It's harder to "improve" certain aspects but so much, as we're beginning to hit the limits of what can even be perceived as an upgrade.
I mean, think about the screen. Very low res -> QVGA -> WVGA -> 720p -> 1080p. Well that's great, but for the next generation, where do you go? There's really no perceivable need to put anything higher into a sub 5" device. Maybe flexible screens? Unbreakable screens? etc etc? That's still not gonna actually increase the photonic information presented to your eyes from the device.
Or take the physical phone body. The GS4 is pushing the screen so far that it's easily covering 80-90% of the entire front surface area. So okay, next gen, you make the entire front surface a screen. Then what? Make the phone thinner? Well, at a certain point you hit a limit there as well. People can only grasp and comfortably hold objects of up to a certain depth. When you get it smaller than that, you're basically just printing a screen onto a knife blade. So that's no good...
Let's try connectivity. LTE and 802.11ac? Most cell networks couldn't saturate their LTE links if they tried, they simply don't have the capacity yet. And even if they did... You're telling me you can even find a use-case where your phone is pumping out/in 100+ mbit/s of data? I mean, at home it's nice to move music/videos/files around sure. But I highly doubt anyone is routinely moving gigabytes of data per hour on any sort of mobile device. Once you hit what you need for say HD video streaming... where else is there to go? Again, the next generation doesn't really need to move data any faster than this.
Sensors? Well, there's actually lots of room for improvement here. And also, un-coincidentally, this is where the GS4 has some the of greatest advantage over other current/last generation devices. While we're still pretty far away from a proper tricorder, we can now sense via magnetometer, accelerometer, gyroscope, light sensor, infrared sensor, microphones, thermometer, hydrometer, barometer, and two cameras... But building sensors isn't the hard part. It's building clever software to do something with these sensors.
I could go on further... but the point I should think is clear. Yea, it's a bit disappointing that nothing since the original GS1/GS2 has really been a full "generation and a half" ahead of the competition... but a large portion of that is simply because we're beginning to hit the ceiling with some of these improvements. Yea, in 20 years "phones" will be unpredictably evolved from what we have now. But I bet the screens still won't have any higher effective PPI than what we're approaching now...

Im only getting it becuase i wanted a smaller note 2 with no spen. The s4 gives me that with plenty of horsepower. Plus the 32gb $250 price point is a good sell. If the htc one had a replaceable battery it would of been a no brainer based on design alone.

I wish we could have a revolutionary phone come out like the Galaxy SII did. Even today, Galaxy SII is unsurpassed with performance. Is there any app or game that it can't run? I mean, it came out nearly 2 years ago, and still has not been matched by an app.
I hope Galaxy SV comes in the way of the revolution.

I never said my prime use is phone calls. I just said 20 min is not the norm. And again where do you get your information. No matter what phone whether it is a dumb phone or smart phone, one of the main focus of a phone period involves making phone calls. Otherwise it would be called a multimedia device and not a phone.

Wait, what, lol!
Pretty sure the Gs1 started the trend there. Gs2 was nice, but nothing revolutionary.... The s3 was by far the best in the series thus far, until this one comes out.
With that said, I like my Note 2 more so than my s3.

I think the Note series has been pretty revolutionary and Samsung has worked hard to come up with clever things to do with the stylus.
I don't know what big hardware improvements are left to do. The one I would like the most is 3-D capabilities, both screen and camera, like the Evo 3D. I would imagine in the last two years the technology has gotten better and Samsung could market it a lot better than HTC. Plus there is more 3D content than two years ago. Samsung could also do cool things with 3D and the hover technology.

I have to disagree about LTE. That 100mbs conection is shared across possibly 100's of users and it does not take alot to bring it down to it's knees.

That and really 2,3,4,5,10 GB is not really that much data if you plan using the LTE speeds fully. If I didn't have a unlimited plan, my bill would be higher in a month than what my phone cost.
I will say your right about the screen 1080p is good, well really for most 720p does the trick. ( I can still see the dot's on a 720p 4.3in screen though, but most can't.)

please do a back up in twrp no matter what. Since there isn't a 100% stock rom that has wifi calling working. If you don't do a back up and want to have a 100% stock rom again you'll have to to flash the firmware to do so.
1.Factory reset (you dont have to but I always do)
2.Put in Download Mode
3.Flash ANK3 firmware via Odin
4.DL Mode again
5.Flash Root via Odin
6.DL Mode once more
7.Flash TWRP via Odin
8.Boot into TWRP factory reset (no need to wipe internal storage)

Please if you just joined the thread be polite and read through the pages before asking questions that have been asked and answered several times in the thread, this is good forum manners.
Instructions:
1. Go to website: autoroot.chainfire.eu
2. Download package for SM-G386T (donate to be a community member)
3. Unzip it.
4. Open Odin3-v.07 on computer
5. Turn off phone.
6. Hold Down Vol, Home, and Power, simultaneously.
7. Press Up Vol to accept
8. Connect phone to computer via USB
9. Confirm that the message in Odin says "Added"
10. Check box for PDA and click on PDA, to select the file "CF-Auto-Root...." that is in the unzipped folder
11. Click Start
12. It'll restart the phone on its own. Odin should say "Pass!" on the upper left.
13. When phone on, download Root Check and run it to confirm that its been rooted.
Thank you all for keeping the thread going and being perseverant at getting a root solution, a custom recovery and a custom Rom. I will keep an eye on the thread and put updates here on the begining to make it easier for everyone. :good::good:

I got the galaxy Avant two days ago from Tmobile.So far I am very happy and impressed, I compared the screen with the S5 side by side, the Z1s, the HTC one M8, the I phone 5s and the LG G2 and I must say that for not being HD it is impressive. at full brightness both the s5 and the Avant with the exact same web page open both screens displayed the exact same content even though the Avant fonts were a bit smaller, however the background white was whiter on the Avant and a bit more yellowish on the S5, then all other phones I compared had whiter whites in the background but the content was very different some showing more and some showing less content ( I can recall which is which.. sorry).
Please share your reviews on the new phone, I think it has impressive specs for a mid range at such a low price. I got mine from T carrier at only $120 with their summer special. With 1.5 Ram, 1.2 quad-core snapdragon 400, 16 GB internal memory plus external micro Sd for up to 64 additional Gb, kit kat 4.4.2 right off the bat plus an unlock app,and full 4G LTE capability this phone has potential for some major development. the camera even only a 5 megapixel takes very decent photos and has nice features like panoramic, shot and sound, sport mode, and a couple more..
By the way... Does anyone know how to root the new Galaxy Avant?
So.. let's talk about this phone and see how good it is and how much better it can become. Thanks.

Total user error just call them and tell them you were playing with network setting because you have no clue what you're doing and they will walk you through it to fix it. Easy is that. You're phone isn't bricked because you messed with network settings

I picked one up for my daughter without much thought. I can't imagine buying a phone that doesn't have expandable storage or replacabe battery. She's really happy with it, coming from a hand-me-down iPhone 4and has already had fun laughing at small iPhone screens with me.
It's got a good enough proc and memory to run touchwiz I guess, but I'd LOVE to run some AOSP on the for her so she can see what android is really about.
So far I'm excited and happy I bought her this phone and would love to see it get some attention on xda.
Just ordered a few mins ago, I'm on tmo prepaid so no discount.. How ever ordered it threw best buy for 200 and tax, compared to prepaid site which is 256 not including tax.., I'm coming from a lg optimus l9 (which I'm gonna sell and recoup some of the cost)

I'm a Linux user/coder myself, but still a little behind the curve on Android. I'll certainly be trying the known root hacks for similar Samsung devices as soon as I get mine.
So glad this phone is finally getting some attention. I switched from my galaxy s2 skyrocket to this one. Although it runs touchwiz its pretty stable with rare hiccups. Its a speedy slick phone. The only drawbacks so far for me have been the camera, 5mp is too low for a new phone. Skyrocket had 8mp. And the screen. Coming from a super amoled to this one the colors are kinda washed out and the white looks kind of blueish. Aside from that root on this phone will get rid of all the bloat and samsung crap and speed it up nicely. So far so good. Must note that this phone is lacking some pretty basic stuff like auto brightness, a dedicated button to turn off data on notification bar, multi window support, the volume is low. On the other hand the minimized call screen widget that appears when pressing home button during a call is a jice addition, along with the ability to quick reply messages similar to how AOSP does it. Hope we get root soon!

I did the same. I bought it for my son he loves it i had bought the Galaxy Light for him unfortunately 4gb of internal storage is not enough. The problem he had was even with an external 32gb not all the apps can be moved but with the Galaxy Avant has enought space and is big enough for him to enjoy so he is happy so am i. btw you can install the Google launcher from the store makes it alittle better with Google now everywhere.

I am also a big fan of the Galaxy S2 from T mobile, awesome custom Roms I have enjoyed that phone until the sim card reader gave up, but I felt it needed a bit more Ram...
About the camera on the Avant, we cannot expect a top end camera in a super budget phone that already has other great specs and quite honestly, after I took a few pics with the camera already and I have nothing to complain; sure not as great as the higher end phones but the pics I took today at a restaurant of my girlfriend with the beauty face mode came out perfect!! I got tons of likes in Facebook.
The screen... it is not as bright and over exposed as the AMOLED ones but... I put it side by side with the galaxy S5 at T-mobile store, opened the exact same web page.. and it blew my mind the fact that the background on this phone's screen had a nicer white/ blue tone rather than the yellowish tone of the S5 and there was a difference in detail but not that huge...
Today I have been all day under the sun in Houston and I was amazed that I had no problem seeing the screen when set at almost full brightness and... the battery... after 22 hours with still 34% left... not bad at all.
So... back to the topic, for me this is like a Galaxy S2 minus camera and screen but with more Ram (1.5 Gb) and more processor Power (quadcore 400 snapdragon 1.2 Ghz), 16 Gb internal memory and up to 64 gb with micro SD, Kit Kat 4.4.2, great size for one hand use, super light; once they get some great roms for this phone optimizing battery, processor and Ram, this phone will be a beast and at the best price in the market!! $216 dollars it is a steal. So this should be candy for the developers to create all kinds of awesome Roms.
I don't think you can expect more for the money... the perfect back up phone if you have a higher end phone as well... Let's hope more people get excited about The Avant...
I just got mine for $120 in the summer special as well. I almost got the LG L90 for $48!!! but its screen has poor viewing angles though it can be rooted now. The Avant is mostly equal to the L90 except a slight smaller screen(4.5 vs 4.7) but the same resolution and the Avant has more memory, internal storage and not only supports LTE but it appears the new 700Mhz LTE spectrum which means even more coverage than most other T-Mobile phones.
I only tested it out in store but plan to open it up tonight and give it a go...
I too want to see this thing at least rooted in the near future.

If you are still paying for the phone via extended payments t he only option to unlock is temporary. I believe once you paid off t he phone you may have permanent unlocking.

The Avant is the replacement for the Galaxy Light T399. I got the Light shortly after switching to T-Mobile from Verizon and needed something cheap but decent to tide me over until I could get a "real" phone (which, at that time, was going to be a OnePlus One, but not anymore). My feelings on the Light are very mixed. In some ways it performs very well. I get a screaming LTE signal at home (not as good at work, but far better than I did with VZW). I like the small size in the pocket but hate the small screen when using it. It does well on benchmarks, but in real use feels like it's just a bit underpowered, and has some severe lag at times.
The Avant seems to address most ofl the qualms I have with the Light. Bigger screen (but not a huge phone), more internal storage, FM radio. I always felt like the Light could use just a wee bit more RAM to run TouchWiz, and the Avant has that extra RAM. Almost everything about the Avant makes me wish it was available in March when I switched. Then again, I only paid $120 for my Light.
The rear camera on these 2 phones is the same, and I think the 5mp camera takes pretty decent pictures for what it is. Up close it takes great pictures. But farther away, it sufferers simply because of the lack of pixels. Perfectly useable for pics of friends or things to upload to Facebook, but obviously not great for scenic vistas or stuff in the distance. The 2mp front facing camera is obviously an upgrade over the .3mp of the Light, but I never cared about the FF camera.
I do find it curious that it not only supports T-Mobile's band 4 (which AT&T also uses), but also AT&T's bands 1, 2, and 5. Probably the same reason they released that unlocker app, but what that reason actually is, I have no idea.
Although I'm not in the market for this phone (I have a Nexus 4 now), I'm still very interested in it, at the least for recommending to others. On a payment plan, it's the best budget choice phone T-Mobile has. The Galaxy Light and the LG L90 can be had for $100 right now. The Light has LTE, but it's dinky. The L90 is bigger, but limited to HSPA+ 21.1Mb/s speeds. There's the Alcatel Onetouch Fierce, but you don't want that POS. Above that, you're looking at flagships or refurbs for a few hundred bucks more. The only thing in between that's new is the Avant or the Lumia 521 or 635, but who the hell wants a Windows Phone?
Off contract, the obvious alternate choices are the Moto G LTE from wherever or a Nexus 4 off eBay. The Nexus 4 is without a doubt the best spec'd hardware-wise, especially if you're willing to hack it for LTE and play around with custom ROMs and kernels, and can live with 8/16gb storage. Between the Avant and the Moto G LTE, it's a complete toss-up for me. The Moto G has the better screen, but the Avant has a removable battery. I don't consider the extra .5gb RAM an advantage for the Avant since TouchWiz needs it to compete with the minimal needs of the nearly-stock Android on the Moto G. The Avant can support a 64gb microSD card, whereas the Moto G can only take a 32gb (unless you format it to FAT32 and are OK with not having files over 4gb).
BTW, where are people seeing that this phone has a Snapdragon 400? I can't find actual confirmation of the processor anywhere. Both T-Mobile and Samsungs pages on this phone simply list it as a quad-core 1.2GHz. CPU-Z only lists it as quad core ARM Cortex-A7 at 300MHz - 1.19GHz (link).
Hopefully, especially being usable on AT&T's network, this'll become a popular low-mid end phone and will receive more development attention that the Galaxy Light has.

the samsung avant doesnt have FM radio do not go by the sites.. I have it right now and there is no FM radio app.., this phone also supports the upcoming band 12.. , this phone is fast ive had it for 3 days now and it runs everything like butter even touchwiz, under system on cpu-z the app is saying its system board is a msm8226 which is qualcomm snapdragon 400

Awesome, thanks. I've been wondering this since it came out. It strikes me as odd that they wouldn't advertize that it sports the SD400/Adreno 305. Bummer about the FM radio though.
