[Q] bought a nexus s, unable to install ICS update (excalamation mark android) - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi guys i'm new to this android thing and don't know about rooting or roms and all that. i just bought a used nexus s (tmobile) and it is running android 2.3.x. i tried to update to 4.0.4 ICS but when the OTA update downloads and the phone reboots get this image of an exclamation mark and an android.
after a reset i'm back to 2.3.x. what can i do? i don't know if the previous person rooted the phone or not. i just want to put everything back to stock and run ICS. thanks for the help.

the page of the android and exclamation mark is the stock recovery. For the nexus S, hold he volume down button first than the power button than the volume up button. That should have you into the page for stock recovery. Press reboot system after that. If the ICS update is still like that, try rooting the device.
Here is the page for rooting:
http://nexusshacks.com/nexus-s-root/how-to-root-nexus-s-or-nexus-s-4g-on-ics-or-gingerbread/
Usually when the update finishes it should just reboot your system normal and have the ICS boot animation.

thank you so much for the help, i'll give it a try.

[Q] Boot issue after OTA

Hi
I got an issue after receiving an OTA update for my Nexus S. It was an official update asking my if I would like to install it. I choose yes and the device booted. It began to install and suddenly the triangle with exclamation mark popped up.
Since then, the phone only boots up randomly. Mostly if stays at a logo saying "google" in middle of the screen. No more Nexus bootup color game.
Is there any way to get this phone back to stock without being an expert?
It is a Nexus S 9020
I9020XXKD1
Kernel 2.6.35.7-ge382d80 android [email protected] #1
GRJ22
It was stock rom 2.3.4 and rooted at the time of the update
Any help is appreciated.
Regards
Martin
I am in the same ship Martin. Updated it to the 2.3.6 from 2.3.4 when I got the OTA. It was working fine, then the screen just stopped responding. It gets stuck at the google colour game now, and the screen turns off after some time. However, if I plug in the usb power charger, the screen lights up again, and the colour game proceeds a bit, then the screen turns off again. if i pull out the usb charger then, the screen lights up again. its been crazy since morning.
im sure that if we reset it, we can get it to work. but in my case i have been unable to do that. can someone tell us how to format/reset our nexus S?
Think I got it sorted.
Running 2.3.6. now, rooted. No loss of data for whatever reason.
What I did.
First of all, in one of those moments were the device was up, i copied a stock 9020T rom 2.3.6 on the sdcard.
In recovery mode, SDcard was never available. While reading through endless threads I found a recovery rom image called 5023_green.img
I had nothing to loose, so i flashed it using fastboot. A started in recovery and I got full access to my SDcard. I updated from full stock rom 2.3.6 I loaded to the SDcard earlier. Since then, no more issues. Surprisingly here I would have expected loss of root and wipe of all data. But this did not happen. All data is there in its place.
Cheers
Martin

[Q] Unable to format/wipe/reset nexus s

I have a nexus s i9023, it was running well with 2.3.4 for three months. Got an OTA update for 2.3.6 two days ago, installed it.Im running stock, and the root is locked.
Everything seemed to be running fine on 2.3.6 when last night it just stopped responding and freezing. Taking battery out doesnt help, it again freezes at the colorful x logo or at the unlock screen.
I read on how to do a reset, but pressing volume down and power button gives me only a flash of blacklight (for a millisecond) and then nothing happens. tried it many times. What am I doing wrong?
Pressing volume up and power button gives me a fastboot menu, and recovery mode only gives me an exclamation mark android, then I have to take battery out again. I cannot mount the sd card or do anything else.
Any help or solution is most appreciated guys. Salute.
When you get to recovery, press again power+volume up (i think so), and you'll get some options. You can make factory reset there (as i can remember).
Also, there are many guides here on how to root and flash custom recovery via fastboot.
Check this out: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1007782
Just follow it, and when you flash custom recovery, you will be able to mount SD card, flash any ROM etc...
Good luck ...
i have the exacly same problem and i already try full wipe, install other ROM like oxygen and i cant pass the main logo... it's frozing all the time and i need pick up the battery to turn it off... :S
someone can help?

Nexus 7 rooting problems

Hi, I just tried rooting for the first time last week. All went well with Nexus 7 and 4. I also installed Paranoid on both. Again Al went well until I tried to download and install a file for the 4.2.2 update. Nexus 7 went into a boot loop showing strange icon. ANDROID was spelled out for the icon. I am never saw that before. Just the X on boot. I was able to do a hard reset but I lost all my Google apps. I only have about 12 Apps, and no Play Store. Shows it is still unlocked but it looks like Paranoid is gone. Everything looks sort of stock. Except strange ANDROID boot icon. Model shows Full Android, Grouper? How can I get either bring it back to full stock or better yet just get Paranoid back? When I try to boot into recovery it shows robot on back with red triangle icon on top. I am don't see the Clockwork Recovery anywhere. Please, I'm real new at this. Can anyone help? Sad to see Nexus 7 so sick. I :crying:can't use it! Thanks Dominick.

Ok i had this problem before....get a program called Nexus root tool kit by Wugfresh the man is a genius then follow the step by step instruction to get clockwork back then reboot enable debugging and copy gapps and paranoid onto your nexus go into cwm or twrp if you chose the custom recovery option under the root button and wipe install and then fix permisions you should be :good:

Upgrade and rooting mess

I've had my rooted N5 on 5.0.1 for a while now. I recently unrooted it to upgrade to 5.1.1, and then I would reroot it. I downloaded 5.1.1 and the phone asked if I wanted to install the upgrade. I said yes and the phone then reboots. But when I looked at which software I was running it said 5.0.1. At that point I went through another reset so I could start over. And that's when the problem began. When the phone boots up it tries to boot into TWRP. My screen flashes TEAMWIN, but won't go any further. It just continues flashing without actually going into TWRP. If I hold the power button and the down volume button I can get the phone into bootloader mode, and that allows me to shut the phone off but that's all I can do. Can someone tell me where I screwed up and how can I get the phone to quit trying unsuccessfully to boot into TWRP? Thanks in advance.

Flash the 5.1.1 factory image with fastboot and start all over.
