Is there a way to have just one scrollable homescreen? - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have been looking for about an hour and haven't been able to find anything. My only guess is that the snap to a particular home screen feature is just a part of android. It isn't in any launchers that I saw or anything else I looked into. I'd like to be able to smoothly scroll around my home screen without it snapping to a particular one, kind of like Windows 8 seems to do. It would be extremely helpful because I generally hold my tablet the landscape way and my thumbs don't reach the middle... that might sound stupid, but it would be nice. Am I missing something obvious or is this impossible?

give this a try: theme: metro ui

Try Apex launcher. It's like stock but launcher but modified to included more features.
I use my TF 90% in landscape mode and scrolling from screen to screen is smooth
and i use my thumb at the edge of the screen to scroll

Well, I don't so much want the whole Metro UI as much as I'd just like to have my home homescreen as it is, with the widgets and all, but not have it snap to 3 separate screens. I don't believe this theme does that anyway. Thanks for the suggestion though.

I used Apex awhile back and it didn't have that feature I'm looking for and it still doesn't I use my thumb to scroll between the various home screens too, but I still have to reach a little too far for my liking sometimes. Well that's not true I don't mind that much. I just think t would be very convenient to be able to slide the home screen a little bit to make that icon that I couldn't reach come within range of my thumb, instead of only having the option to scroll to a whole new home screen. This would only give me one home screen, but with all my stuff on it. I believe I saw this in the Windows 8 Metro UI. Perhaps they will add this in the future. Also, hello from your neighbor in Katy. Small world.

Nova Launcher got a feature (although Im quite sure the stock got it as well) so you can just tap on the edges and it switches screen.
No need to make the swipe-gesture.
You are right that there are no launcher that can only display parts of the homescreens.

Ok i think i know what you're getting at. You'e talking scrolling the screen but instead of it going to the next screen, you want that one particular screen too be able to scroll maybe half way or whatever to reach a certain icon that sit in the middle of the screen

Yeah. I mean, just think about it like having all your homescreens tied together as one big screen where you can just slide it side to side very little if you want or fling and fly to the other end (flick would scroll straight from 1 through 2 3 4 to 5). You wouldnt have everything on screen at once, but it would give the feeling of it being there better than automatically snapping to a new scrwen. No launchers have this and I'm sure someone has thought of this already so I'm guessing it can't be done yet.

Home screen rotation.

First: I know it's standard for the home screen not to rotate or go into landscape. I'm not asking how I can get it.
Second: I am NOT looking for suggestions on how to get it, so please don't say [this] launcher can do it, download it [here].
Third: There is no third.
So I've got a Thunderbolt and so does a friend. She really wanted the home screen to rotate and I told it it won't happen. Well, she just came and showed me hers rotating! She said she kicked the stand out, set it on her desk and it rotated to landscape! Mine definitely, as it's supposed to, does not rotate.
I did a quick Google search and could only find on thread on the Android Central boards with people saying it's rotating for them. Then a bunch of people starting blabbing about other launchers that will let you. That has no relevance to the situation at hand, we all know third party home launchers usually give that option. Others also mentioned bringing the keyboard out, but holding down menu on the home screen doesn't even do that, so that's a no-go either. Plenty of stupid people on the internet...
They did however mention the stock background may be a common thing, and also the mention of widgets got me intrigued. However, I don't have any non-stock widgets on mine. I have however changed the background and the skin. She hasn't. We both have auto-rotate on in the settings.
Other than that, I'm at a loss! Is anyone else able to get the home screen to rotate?
some launchers such as launcher pro and ADW launcher allow the homescreens to rotate into landscape mode. so you very likely saw someone running launcher pro.
[Mod Edit] Did you read? I hate to come across like an asshole but I made it VERY clear that it's NOT a home launcher. It's stock as I said, and I am VERY aware that 3rd party home launchers allow rotation.
Great attitude to have when asking a q on a forum.
Ot: my homescreen rotates but I'm using launcher pro.

My stock home screen rotates when docked in the car dock. I think this is how most that say theirs rotate are referring too

Yeah, that could have been what they were referring to as well.
From my understanding it's just a magnet in the dog that enables the dock mode. My friend didn't say anything about the dock app launching up, or anything other than she just popped out the kick stand, set it on it's side and the homescreen rotated. It is possible it opened and she backed out of it without thinking about it.
But even after she picked it up and closed the stand it kept doing it. Maybe her phone somehow got tricked into thinking it was docked the whole time... ?
Default
Do you mean that when she turns the phone on its side the screen also rotates to landscape? If so, this is just an option in the settings menu. To auto-rotate the home screen.

that only rotates the screen in menus and not the physical homescreen as if you had a keyboard present and slide it out

[Q] Why are the home/back/taskbar icons part of the GUI rather than hardware?

You can't hide it (apparently you can in 3.1, but that's not for sure yet) and it takes up a good amount of the screen. It's especially annoying when trying to watch a video (although admittedly I didn't notice it until I read other people's gripes in these forums...now it bugs me!).
Why didn't they just make buttons or touch sensitive icons on the bezel?
Certain apps will darken out the home bar such as Kindle reader/youtube( i think) but yes I agree there should be an option to hide it while using certain apps such as Dolphin HD while in full screen.
This is the first time I'm hearing of 3.1 allowing us to hide the bar. I hope it happens otherwise we might have to wait for a custom rom to do it for us.

They wanted manufacturers to be able to do buttonless designs, so it has to be there or you have no way of navigating.
by the way in any properly made app the bar will fade away till theres just 3 faint dots left, is that really a huge issue?
this is one of the best new features of HoneyComb. now buttons will always be properly oriented with the screen orientation.

this. But it will be nice with the dim the lights option if apps start using it.

So it can be compatible for future os or app if google decided to chance their button functions in software regardless of hardware placement.

[Q] Portrait mode with keyboard attached?

I have a case that holds the tablet and the keyboard, which works pretty good. Occasionally, though, I would like to open the case and NOT use the ATTACHED keyboard while holding the tablet in portrait mode. Usually this is to look up something quickly while standing up and it would be awkward to try and type in the search.
I've searched the forums and found nothing that addresses this. I tried a bunch of rotation apps but none of them work with the keyboard attached.
Ideally I would like a widget that rotates the screen into portrait and the same (or another) widget to rotate it back to landscape.
Anybody have any ideas on how to do this?
Thanks

Yes, I'm using a FREE app called "Screen Orientation Control" by eflow inc. It's a nice one, after installed, it put a control on your notification, where you can access quickly. 3 modes available: portrait, landscape and auto(turn off).
FIXED IT!! Works like a champ. I tried about 8-9 different apps, none of which worked, but this does what I need.
Now only if they had a widget.
Thanks:laugh:
I just installed this one on my TF700 and Samsung Galaxy Nexus, and it works great:
Ultimate Rotation Control
$2.99 after free 7-day trial, but is quite versatile, and should do what you want.

Why you need a widget, the control is right on the notification same as factory stuff. This is even better than widget, don't you think so?
EDIT: you can set portrait mode with either the dock keyboard to your left or to your right, by hold up your device in your liking, then enable portrait mode.
This app works fine. But, for me, having a widget at a specific spot on the main screen would just make it a tad bit faster.

I disagree with you on that, have it on the notification is way better, here is why,
1. If you are not on home screen, (you either put the widget on every screen or navigate back to home screen
2. when you in the browser or reading a document etc.. and want to switch to portrait mode, you need to go back to home screen, enable it then navigate back to your app. Here you can access it directly through the notification without leaving the page!
3. One less icon on your home screen and since it blended right into your notification it looks more professional done
4. If you have 5 home screens and you put your widget on all of them, you're wasting memory.
5. Again it's your choice..hehehe...
I use an app called Rotate -- it lets you set up specific rotation preferences per-app. Also, it can re-enable auto-rotation even when the dock is attached for most apps.
I only have one main screen and very few apps/widgets on it. About 95% of the use of this tablet is for Evernote to track one specific project. My usual use in portrait is just to look up a suspense date or task status. However, if I did have multiple screens then I could see the advantage of this app in the notification panel rather than a widget.
Cheers

I'll check this out, too. Thanks.
I'm getting good results from eFlow's "Screen Orientation Control."
With no paid or donation versions, I have to wonder what eFlow's getting out of publishing apps. Pure love of coding, I guess?

Blue Lines on Transformer when swiping

Hi All
Ok, I've had my shiny new Transformer now for a few days and although I'm pretty familiar with Andriod as an OS, I'm still learning about it in relation to tablets.
Now, it might be my imagination and it's been doing it from new, but I've noticed something irritating (for me anyway!).
When I touch a 'screen' in order to swipe, two, very thin vertical lines appear either side of the screen. They remain there until the swipe is completed or I take my finger off the screen.
The lines represent the left and right edges of the screen space (so I don't think it's a screen fault) - so it looks like it's there by design. For me, it makes the whole fluid movement of the screen look ugly - is it me... or is this normal behaviour for the tablet?
Perhaps I should just get a blue wallpaper
Any thoughts?
Cheers

If you mean the thin blue frames around the "pages" of the launcher, then it's completely normal.

If you mean you only get it on the launcher, it's a stock feature designed to show a divider between the pages.
If you don't like it, consider using a third party launcher from the PlayStore, such as Nova, Apex, Go Launcher HD, etc.
They are highly customisable, and let you change the colour of the outlines when swiping to another page.
If it's on the Home screen (the screen you end up on when booting the tablet), it's normal behavior for Nova Launcher, for example. Not all launchers do this, though, and if you're new to Android, I'd suggest looking around for some launchers and trying them out. (I am on Nova as well, as I like it best, especially with the faster-than-light options. ) FTL Launcher was great on my then-ICS SGS2, but was bugged to oblivion on JB. Shame, really, that one was fast.
EDIT: nevermind. Useless info to add, so useless edit. None performed. Walk on, people, nothing to see here.

If you don't like them try this. Go to the menu by tapping on the right top corner and then come to the homescreen by pressing the back button. You'll notice that they are gone. This is something temporary and you'll notice those lines may be after a reboot or something.

Thanks for all the advice and tips everyone. I'm going to try out some other launchers

Wallpaper slow to load after unlocking?

Had my Z3 for a week now and absolutely love it, one thing that has been slightly annoying me though is that when I unlock the phone it will sometimes take half a second or so for the wallpaper to load, and it appear black before then. The video below probably demonstrates this better! I have tried different launchers, making sure the picture was in internal storage, using lower resolution pictures etc.
http://youtu.be/PwSRDej8drs
Has anyone else been experiencing this, or have any idea what it is? It looks like the nav buttons along the bottom also appear after a brief delay.
I also get a pop up saying "Ending Session" occasionally when I use Stamina mode, any ideas what this is?
The video looks normal to me, and looks like mine. If it's loading slower than that, then i'd be concerned.
The ending session bit I can't help with
---------- Post added at 10:49 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:46 AM ----------
After turning off animation in dev settings, the background does indeed take time to load and leaves a black screen for a split second.
I guess the animation is there to hide it.
Same thing here! I'm using nova prime.
Did it happen with all the other launcher you've tried as well?
Yeah it isn't too bad, you know what it is like when you get a new phone though, everything makes you worried that something is wrong!
It is incredibly smooth with the default Xperia live wallpaper, but it is like it is in the video using anything else.
Some people worry about the smallest things. Just look at the bigger pitcture and stop nitpicking issues.
Its happening on mine aa well. But i actually think this ia done on purpose. Doesnt annoy me as much as it used to though.
If u put the animations on 1x (instead of off) it seems to rectify the problem.
Same here on a Z1. That's actually pretty interesting, I'll follow this thread.

I think that the delay (black screen for a fraction of sec) is due to those glittery things when you swipe the screen to unlock as they also keep on going on the homescreen once the lockscreen is out of the way...you can see that if you use the xperia wallpapesr that come with the phone, if you use a different wallpaper the glitters don't overlay on the homescreen (ie the black screen)...
I have the delay as well just like yours, same using a 3rd party unlocker (I used widgetlocker, but it doesn't really stick as it's better using it with root) and with a 3rd party locker the black screen is on the locker as well as soon as you push the power button....if you use a 3rd party unlocker, go to settings/security/screen lock and set it to none....then you won't have the lag anymore!
On another note, you're using the stock locker right?! How did you set a live wallpaper as a background (or is that a static pic, the video is a bit short on your youtube link to be able to tell), I can't find a setting for it, also is it possible to add widget on the stock lockscreen?
I always root my xperia's phone right away usually (but since it's not possible at the moment without unlocking the bootloader and losing the DRM keys) and never use the stock home and lockscreen, always change them right away so I haven't found settings for the stock lockscreen (the only option that I have is to change the background wallpaper, not live wallpaper option though and no widget option either), I can see the clock is clickable on the lockscreen but no action that I can see...am I missing something here?!
Now that I think about it the best way to not have the lag would be to build a theme with the included wallpaper of your choice, I'll look into that, just got the phone, so still checking things up and not having root is making things a bit strange at the moment
