[Q] [I9020A] stock recovery.img urgently needed - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey all. My phone stopped working a while back and I'm going to send it in for repairs. However, I'm not in stock recovery at the moment.
For reasons explained in the link above, I'm looking specifically for the recovery.img or an update.zip containing the stock recovery. I can't flash the OTA package with the recovery since it fails to find the /system folder and stops at that point. The OTA package contains a recovery but it doesn't contain a recovery.img.
I haven't been able to find the file on the internet and I was hoping someone could either link the file, or create it from their stock image.
Thanks for the help!
EDIT: Sent the phone back and flashed it with the ICS versions of everything I could flash.

You say you're not able to flash the OTA package? Are you sure you're flashing a full OTA and not an update?
Make sure your CWM recovery is up to date too. Latest version is 5.0.2.0 for the non touch version.

OTA Updates will not work. The OTA packages linked in the general forum have the recovery in the form of a "recovery-from-boot.p" file and a "install-recovery.sh" file. The OTA package fails to flash because /system and /data do not get mounted.

Anyone have the official update.zip for Gingerbread?

For people that get an official OTA update, after getting the notification that an update is ready the zip package for the update will be on the internal memory or sd card. Before running the update this can be copied and saved. That way people can flash the official update via recovery and get the new baseband without using the infamous LG update tool. Then if they want root can flash CWM and run chaindd's update.zip for root access.
If anyone has the official update zip package please post a link or PM me with it.
Thanks.

I've been waiting for that to be released too, even though my replacement came with Gingerbread preloaded.

I don't think that is correct. We're pretty sure that clockworkmod/custom recovery programs don't have access to wherever the baseband lives on the phone (is it even on a regular partition? Probably not). That's why, when you use the LG tool, you'll see the phone goes into the "S/W Update" mode and such while the LG tool flashes the new baseband and ROM. The OTA must do something similar (something "deeper" than recovery to flash the baseband).
In short, I don't think you'll ever be able to flash a baseband via recovery/CWM. You need a "deeper" flash (like nvflash or something similar).
Remember how you had to use HBOOT on the G1/Magic to update the baseband and/or splashscreen, not Amon_Ra or CWM or whatever custom recovery you had? I think this is similar...

I am not talking about using CWM. I am talking about using the stock recovery that requires signed updates. In my experience, the stock recovery can write the baseband. Normally when you receive an OTA update the phone downloads the update package and places it in internal memory or sd card as a zip file. Then when you tell the phone to install the update the phone reboots into recovery mode, automatically selects the update zip and flashes the phone. On my Nexus One I received an OTA update for Gingerbread and it flashed a baseband update. I believe the original OTA file can be flashed with stock recovery and the baseband will be udpated. Anyone who receives the OTA will have this update zip in their memory before they flash the update. Normally the file is deleted once the update has been applied. I saved the original OTA for Nexus One Gingerbread before I told the phone to flash the update. I am sure someone out there did the same for the G2X.

[Q] Cant flash Nexus S ROM's

I have been able to get into CWM Recovery v5.8.0.2 but there are no system files or any files on the phone, i can load new ROM's on the SD Card but every time i install it, it comes back with installation aborted, i have tried multiple different ROM's, any suggestion will be greatly appreciated. The phone does not boot any further
Are you sure youre not flashing a Nexus S 4G rom on a Nexus S. Or the opposite?
I am sure, i downloaded all the correct ROM's from CWM and am sure i have a Nexus S not 4G, it was rooted before and worked fine, i tried getting it back to stock and when it booted, it stopped on the boot ROM, from there i went through the procedure on loading CWM recovery and finally got back into recovery mode but from there i cannot flash anything and as mentioned, there are no file whatsoever on the phone, it is as if it was wiped clean.
Have you accidentally flashed a NS4G recovery by any chance? Try reflashing your recovery.
Also, any other errors listed?
I flashed using the CWM v5.8.0.2-touch on the Nexus S category, so am sure and triple checked and redid the flash a couple of times, its as if the new flash does not find any files to flash and i cannot see any files on the phone, there is only the update.zip file on there

try a different recovery, or the non touch cwm recovery.
I loaded v5.0.2.0 from CWM and still the same, it changes CWM but cannot load any new ROM's

download from somewhere else and try.
any suggestions on where else i could get it from?
Download stock fastboot.imgs for your specific device. Flash them all = stock and start over
i have also downloaded from nexushacks.com and same result
Sorry, but where can i get the stock files from?
Search Google. Go to official Google site with them. Can't recall the exact URL but it will come up. There is a thread on these forums as well with the links to factory images and instructions if you need them.
PSA. Stay away from nexusshacks. That guy is a tool.
Thanks, will have a look on what i can find
Ihave tried stock and various developers and still no luck, i tried fast boot update from terminal and get
archive does not contain 'android-info.txt'
archive does not contain 'android-product.txt'
error: update package has no android-info.txt or android-product.txt
Any suggestions

[Q] How to restore phone to stock original settings?

Hello, sorry this is my first post, but I'm having a few issues currently trying to get my phone back to how it was when I bought it.
Whilst I have searched around the forums and google in general, I've found several guides and sources of help, but unfortunately the guides I've found all have dead links for the stock files.
I'm not 100% sure if the method I've been using is correct either. I've being trying to put any of the recovery, system and boot images I've managed to find that I thought were relevant on to my phone via fastboot USB. The result is that my phone now seems to only have CWM recovery 5.0.2.8, and won't boot to a ROM, so I'm leaving it here and asking for help before I do any more damage.
Thanks in advance for any help.
Edit: As far as I can tell, I'm back on stock ROM and stock recovery, but something is still wrong, as when I try to update to the newest OTA through the phone, it warns me that I'm on an unofficial ROM?
You have to reinstall the Stock recovery first.
I'm on my phone right now, and won't be able to link you to the files, but I found it in the Android Development section. Try a quick Google search. You can do it from CWM.
Hope you resolve your problem.

I'm currently on stock recovery. When I run recovery via HBOOT, I get the standard android update icon, then shortly after I get an icon of a phone with a red /!\ in front of it.
And as stated before, when I run the updater from the "about" section in settings, I get a warning that my phone isn't stock, and it deletes the update after downloading it, meaning I get no chance to use it at all. Is there any kind place where I can get all the official .img files for recovery, system and boot? That's all I seem to need to get back to stock.

Download an official RUU and extract from it Rom.zip. Inside you will find necessary boot.img, recovery.img and system.img. Flash them via fastboot and then update your phone via OTA.

Update Rooted Nexus

I am new to this. I have a rooted nexus 5. It is stock rooted with TRWP recovery. I don't have a custom ROM. When the newest update is available, am I safe to update?

Since your post was made today, and the update was released yesterday I'm assuming you are thinking that you will be getting the update over the air? You won't. When you have a custom recovery (TWRP) you won't get OTA's.
But don't be disheartened, not in the LEAST. Unless you've removed or altered the default system apps (you would know if you did) all you have to do is download the update to your phone, boot into TWRP, flash the update, and let the phone reboot.
Due to how the OTA updates are rolled out, even if you had not loaded a custom recovery onto your phone, you might not have had it pushed to you for a couple of weeks.
Read this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2523217
From what you have described you are "scenario 2". Proceed directly to step B. Like many people, I was also step B. It is easier than making toast.
So if I update that way will I lose my data and root? Also do I unzip the file or flash the zip file?

1. If you flash a custom ROM via TWRP it is generally recommended you do a clean wipe beforehand (and before doing that, obviously create a backup). There are cases where you can go straight to flashing without wiping, which is called a dirty flash. Although this is used when you're flashing an updated version of the ROM you're currently running. Following instructions under Section B won't cause you to lose data.
2. You won't lose root because ROMs will generally take this into account. However, if you do happen to lose root, just download and flash SuperSU and you're back on track.
3. Just flash the zip file.

The first part of the reply above is certainly correct, (the rest is also, but I'm just speaking to the first part of it) but I feel it is just going to confuse you.
You did not flash a custom ROM, you flashed a custom RECOVERY. Two different things. When you copy the update onto your phone, in the form that exists in the thread I linked earlier, it is not an entire image. It is an UPDATE to the stock image, which you are already using. As for your concern of losing root, it shouldn't be a concern. As was mentioned in the reply above mentioned, while you are in recovery you can simply just flash SU again.
In fact, I'd be willing to bet the file to flash SU is still on your phone.
As for me personally, I happened to have unlocked the pro version of SU (because why not...it's only $2.50 and I like the app) and just toggled the "survival mode" option. But even if I had not, it would have been a very small thing to loading SU again.
In short, don't worry about losing root. When you first rooted this phone, most of the steps involved were not in rooting the phone, but in unlocking the bootloader. Loading this update has nothing to do with that, so in your case, since you didn't flash a custom ROM (Such as CyanogenMod) and you didn't make any modifications to the system apps...quite literally all you have to do is copy the stuff onto your phone, load into TWRP, fire up the update, and either fire up SU, or have survival mode already enabled, and reboot the phone.
(and no, you don't have to unzip the file pasted in the thread, just copy it directly) The instructions in that thread are really simple, and that's probably giving you a bit of pause, but seriously, it really is that simple in your case, as it was mine.
So I updated but lost root. How do I flash SU?

Do you still have custom recovery cwm or twrp? If so download su zip from either of those posts and flash in recovery if not you can flash recovery with adb or flashify and then flash su zip.

[Q] Unrooting problem

So i did something stupid right after rooting my Relay. I deleted basic stock files that are necessary for the phone to function properly. I was able to copy them from my current phone (rooted T-Mobile G2/Desire Z) onto an SD card and in turn push them back onto my Relay. My problem is that I still get error messages constantly after boot up and the simplest tasks can take hours (not to mention I can't use phone, contacts, messaging). I have seen all over the web (and XDA) about unrooting the phone and retuning it to stock. I was thinking that I could unroot, then reroot my Relay and that will solve my problem.
I was all set to unroot when I encountered yet another issue. Samsung-updates.com and sammobile both direct you to download the firmware files from hotfile. Hotfile has been shut down due to copyright infringement. Where I can find the stock firmware files now that hotfile has been shut down?
Please help me as I anxiously await using my new phone without the extra bloatware!
Thank you,
RockinRita

Without the stock files wouldn't Kies be pointless?
The easiest way I've found to completely revert to stock, is to get a CWM flashable version of the unmodified stock rom (From the straight system image, not an update.zip reformated image) and a CWM flashable version of the stock recovery. Flash those in. If you want to reset your flash counter, make certain to also flash a su binary of some form (I personally prefer SuperSU, since it's so easy to clear out, run triangle away, then uninstall your su app properly.

I copied the files from my rooted HTC Desire Z/ T-Mobile G2 to a spare SD card I have and then I inserted that card into my Relay and started it up. It took me a few hours to get passed all the error messages that constantly pop up. And then I went into my files, external SD and moved the files over to the system folder on the Relay. After several reboots, the error messages still are coming up which I why I need to unroot it and reroot it.

You could also use Odin to flash a md5 sum of T699UVBMC5_HOME using the download mode of the Relay. Place in PDA, and tick off the Auto Reboot and F. Reset Time and hit start. Make sure you have the drivers required to do this. I think they're included with Kies. In my case, I used CWM to format /system, then I used download mode. However, I had to reset my device. AND CWM (plus root access) was erased after the stock restore. I didn't miss an important detail, did I?

I'll be honest, you've got me on this one. I've never used ODIN, and am not well versed in its use. But yes, this is sounds like a more technical way of doing it without the CWM flashables I've mentioned. -- Impossible in some situations. For example, my fiancee's phone's USB port has died for all purposes other than charging, So if I'm to send it in for a warranty repair, I'll have to use the method I posted.
Confused here

Magamo,
I'm sorry, but I'm still totally confused here. Not sure how to flash the files in. I downloaded Kies and both of the zip files from your post. If you don't have CWM, or some other custom recovery running on this, how did you get root in the first place? The easiest way to get root is to use heimdall or ODIN to flash CWM or another custom recovery, then flash Superuser or SuperSU using your new custom recovery.
The .zip files I linked are only meant to be flashed through recovery. Not Kies, not ODIN, not any other method.
Got it!!
With the help of this site (http://www.celldekho.com/how-to-unroot-samsung-galaxy-s-relay-4g/) and the file it linked to on rapidshare, along with your tip Magamo, I was able to unroot my Relay successfully. I'll reroot it later when I have the time and make sure not to delete important files LOL Thanks so much for the help!
