Coming from the Captivate, I was shocked at how unnecessarily large everything was rendered on such a large screen. I guess that's what comes with having the same resolution but a much larger screen. To me, it is unlivable and I really have to lessen the the DPI--but to what?
So, what are everyone's favorite DPI settings and why? (Preferably with screenshots)

Hello.
I tried several configurations, I am at 200 dpi currently and I feel it is ok
160 is very nice as well, but the keyboard gets too small and it is hard with my big fingers to work with it.
Just try one after another, use it for 1 or 2 days and you will discover the best for you. Start with a Big one, about 240 and then go down.
Please know that using the calculator, phone dialer or stock samsung email with different DPI configurations is a mess!!!! You should find the AOSP versions of email other apps, and try the different versions of dialers so you use the full screen after you change the dpi setting.
Also, consider TouchWiz is bad out of the box, changing the DPI makes it worst.
Use a custom launcher to get rid of that.
Saw a Galaxy Note today, and I think TouchWiz is good on it, but not in the Skyrocket.

Using 200 myself. Yup as the previous poster mentioned, the Samsung bundled apps have the margins set. need to find time to remove them, shouldn't be hard..Otherwise after playing around that's what I have settled in..
160 here for 720p!
download another keyboard if the default one is too small. i use slideit =)
i also use adw ex as my launcher and use exdialer as my dialer.
160 dpi with SwiftKey beta, the keys turn out absolutely perfect. On regular SwiftKey, I changed the heights to large and everything was good then.

180. screen real estate but can still read all text without zooming in
I've settled with my S2 4G (aussie model) to run at 190 DPI. Went back to 240 after a few days and wow, way to big.
I'm using Go launcher to fix the display issues on the home screen. Looks really good when icons set to display 6 down and 5 accross.
Will post screen shot shortly.
206. This is the natural DPI for the phone. If you measure the screen size (the 4.5 inches) and divide the area of the screen by the pixels you will get that value.
See the phone profile on gsmarena.com for more details. Basically it is what I think it should ship with rather than the 240 or really tiny 160.
I use nitrality to change my DPI. It will only let me go down to 182. Won't let me choose 206.
What other apps will allow me to change the DPI settings?
190 feels perfect to me. It's big enough that I can still see everything, yet gives so much more screen real estate

I use 220 (I am in my 50's so it works best for me )
Rom Toolbox lets you set any dpi.
Two questions:
1) I am new to the Skyrocket; on my previous phone (Atrix) when you changed launchers you had to clear out the homescreen to save memory. Do you have to do this also on TW?
2) How can I install the no background google search bar like you have?

1) I haven't had to do that on mine.
2) It either came with the Trebuchet Launcher that I'm using or it came with the rom (NexusMod Beta 3)

I was at 200 but went back to 220. May try that 204 suggestion soon but I enjoy 220 as of now. Easy to read when I just glance at my phone.
I'm using swiftkey and it seems I always miss keys unfortunately. Not sure if this is from the lcd adjust.
Also using exdialer.

So I recently got the LCD density changing aapplication from the market and love it.
I have always been a fan of larger screens but the hardware on the Nexus 1 (led scroll ball and light) keeps me grounded.
Anyway after using the app and moving it down to 220, I'm getting the same resolution overall as I did with the Atrix and love it.
Although the screen size isn't as big, I'm seeing more information than I do with my Captivate that has the same 480 by 800 resolution and a larger, 4 inch screen.
Just sharing my thoughts.

any problem with some apps or games? I used it before and some apps and games won't show up in full screen no more so i switch back to default and uninstall the app.
I've been using this app for some time now and I have no problems with apps so far.
I don't have any problems with applications; I don't play games on this phone so I can't comment on that though.

Never heard of this until just now. VERY VERY awesome.
What are the "optimal" settings you guys are using? I set mine to 220 and I did notice a difference (especially my home screen).
Sounds intersting! Any noticable impact on battery or memory?
You can definitely notice a difference, it kinda reminds me of the HD Sense roms. It also fixed some issues I was having with LauncherPro & some widgets when in portrait.

Ya it's too bad it's not the same application anymore. This application doesn't have 2 arrows coming out of the LCD icon. In addition, the screen density resets itself back after every reboot.

Set LCD density on boot?
Hi guys,
Do you know if there's a way to set the LCD density 'permanently' so that you don't have to reset it everytime you reboot?
Thanks in advance!
You can set it permanently by editing the build.pro. Change the ro.sf.lcd_desity line to whatever you like.
I recommend 180 for N1s

If you want to make your density setting your system default, just go into the setting. If you edit the build.prop, then you'll have to do that every time you flash a new rom. I'm sure most of us flash junkie's use titanium back, so that way when you restore your apps that setting will be saved also.

Use root explorer to edit your build.prop file under /system.
Back it up first!
Unfortunately swiftkey beta doesn't work with changed density! Dang it.
You can also use LCDDensity from the market, its free but still requires root.
I already have problems with text readability on some sites, wouldn't this make it worse?
IMO 200 is the sweet spot. At the default density, Samsung's text sharpening looks a bit harsh.. You clearly see a 'halo' around letters, and it's not too visually pleasant.
I also changed the font to Ubuntu Regular, looks better than the default to me.
I tried 200 and it looked ok but the uneven icon spacing and widget size was quite unappealing. Is there a way to fix that?
maybe a diff launcher which can add more rows and columns on the home screens and allow widgets to be resized.
I tried LCD Density from the market, and it changed it..Looked great, however, on second reboot it reverts back to stock.
WTF?

If you read the instructions when you run the app, it states that changes will not save through a reboot. So either edit your build.prop manually, or buy LCD Density Changer from Beansoft.
200 dpi looks great for me. Using ADW Launcher EX, 5x5 icon grid, icon size set to 130.

Probably a stupid question but how do you change the resolution
Supercurio just built Voodoo Screen Tuning app, it's on the market, you should all check it out
A great dpi changer and will even stick after reboot is called nitrality. Under UI tweaks, dpi resolution, change and it'll boot up with new dpi
And with the market issue, all you need to do is go back to 280dpi go to market get what you want if unable from other dpi or to undated then revert back to whatever dpi you changed it too. Easy

I use LCD Resolution... currently running at 220. I had it at 190 when running the MIUI launcher, but since I switched to GO Launcher EX I bumped it up.
But yes some apps in market say they are incompatible now... so I just find the .APK and put it on my phone and install it that way... seems to be working fine.
So our device is 480x800, but with ADWex you obviously lose some space.
Does anyone know what the usable area is? So if I were to have a 10x10 grid, what would the dimensions of one cell be?
Devide 480 x 800 by 10 I guess.... Although it should not matter. I have used adw Ex @ 10x10 for a long time and never noticed real estate loss. If anything it gives more room.
It's not so much about what's lost, but I'm trying to figure out each cell size to aide in widget design. It's not simply dividing by ten, tried that, can't seem to figure out what it it's tho.

Honestly, I use Root Explorer for what it's used for and ROM Manager for what it's used for.
ROM Toolbox might do all those things just as well. But I never bothered to try using it for any of those.
I have used ROM-T for replacing boot animation (the selection isn't super) and some icons like 4G or Wireless in the pull down (again, selection isn't super).
And toyed with it for overclocking.
I stop using it for awhile but always seem to find something useful in it to use here and there.
This is what I used for the market fix... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1639213 .. can someone post the edited phone.apk? Thanks!

"Here's the difference between 240 and 200 for me."
Now that's just creepy - I have the EXACT same toggles in AOKP, but my swagger is ON
Is Rom Toolbox the best way to go for changing density? I using LCD Modder and set standard/boot to 190. Basically thought I had bricked for a few minutes, phone went fully unresponsive. Battery pull + power only showed Samsung logo followed by nothing, luckily booting into Recovery wasn't a problem.
EDIT: SkyICS
I use Rom toolbox. I am on SkyIce 4.2E and have no problems using 160 or 200. The only reason i stay at 200 instead of 160 is my eyesight. Im not blind, but i dont like straining either. Yes, the dialer screen at 160 is really small, but still plenty usable. I dont really get picky over the small stuff.
