Questions about rooting - Samsung Infuse 4G

Just wanna say first that im glad to be back with an android ive been on the iphone and dont like it much. I just bought the infuse 4g and it comes with froyo, ive been reading a little and seen that not all the roots work for gingerbread 2.3.6 so my questio is should i stay with froyo? Is there roots that work for 2.3.6? If so where can i findthem im not completely computer stupid i jailbroke my iphone and stuff but theres alot more options for androids. I also wanna overclock it basically i just wanna screw around and see what all i can do with this phone so any help is appreciated thx in advance.

At this point I'd advise you to wait until our unofficial ICS becomes more stable. Root froyo and wait.

Root Froyo with super one click and you should be good. If you really want to overclock froyo there's a good kernel by Bedwa called Infusion (not Infusion-GB), I believe the latest version is 1.8 (haven't used froyo in ages). Sorry for the double post, my XDA premium modify button disappeared :/

[Q] 2.3.3 to 2.2?

I'm a bit confused. I've been reading online for a while, and don't fully understand the ROMs available and what not. (I am a computer programmer, so I'm fairly tech savvy).
Basically, my evo shift has 2.3.3. I did a factory reset hoping it would back down to 2.2, but it did not. Now, I'd like to install 2.2 so I can root my phone. Is there a way I can do this? I've also seen a few roms (ie: evervolv) that are rooted. How can I install these (i'm using a mac).
Also, what do you guys recommend? Should I install a ROM, downgrade to 2.2 (how?) and root, etc?
Thanks!
You cannot downgrade to Froyo.. Sorry. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1218580
Sent from Gingerbread Speedy 4G
You can only temp root right now with 2.3 on the Shift. A factory reset just wipes everything and basically gives you a clean OS...it's like getting a new phone. The good folks at HTC should be releasing the the source code and kernel between now and EOL of the phone.

When ppl aren't sure what they are reading they have to ask. It may seem stupid to ppl who aren't new but to someone new, I can see it happening, especially if they don't want to brick their phone!
just my 1.5 cents worth
Yeah, I've read lots. I posted because it's good to have clarification.
I've read that you cannot "downgrade" to 2.2 from 2.3, but that doesn't necessarily answer my question if I can flash a 2.2 ROM..
I know 2.3.3 isn't rooted yet, but that doesn't necessarily mean I can't flash a ROM with an older, rooted version (very common in modchips for gaming systems.. If the company releases an update, you can usually re-flash the chip to the old update and be good to go).
So, it seems that if my phone is 2.3, my *ONLY* option is to temp root, is that correct (impossible to reflash, reprogram, etc)?

You need root and recovery (or the old hboot) in order to flash anything. So yes, until a new root method is found your only option is to temp root.

They could just have an error screen explaining why they can't post. Let them know they have to be a member for certain amount of time, or there could even be a kind of peer review, where existing developers can vouch for the new member.

I thought this was already the case.
Questions like this should be asked in the Q&A forum. Period.
Also, one should spend time reading the first 1-2 pages of each forum, ESPECIALLY sticky threads before posting. It is obviously clear that the original poster did not spend ANY time reading.
I was a noob once too - but I took the time to do my research and spent an evening or two browsing threads and learning when I first flashed my HTC Tilt. Same for when I bought my Tilt2. Same for when I bought my Huawei S7, and same for when I bought my Infuse and Tab 10.1.
The "teach a man to fish" proverb applies here. If you just handhold a user, they will never learn anything. If you force them to spend some time reading threads, they'll start learning how to educate themselves and learn a new device without asking questions about stuff that is widely documented.

That's no excuse! I've been in this game for years and have learned almost everything I know simply by reading. If I can do it so can the noobs. Period. This guy deserves everything and anything he gets. I'm with Entropy. They must be forced to learn!
I'd say "ok guys back to topic" but instead I'll say "crap, here comes Neo again!"
Agreed.
A bit of reading would help everyone. Generally speaking, most questions have probably been asked before and even if they haven't; it is best to search anyway because you might stumble across the answer.
I'm all about being helpful, but constantly coddling people while they do the wrong thing isn't helping anyone. I want us to have a large user base so that our development continues to expand, but not just so that we have a lot of ignorant people running around posting the same thing over and over without doing a bit of searching.
It isn't as if this post was some desperate call for help because their phone stopped working after installing a ROM. It was just someone being lazy.

And make sure to flash t989 cwm through rom manager. Don't flash anything else unless it says it will work with i727. T-mobile SGS2 aka t989 is very similar to our phone so mostly everything there you can flash except kernel. Because with t989 kernel you will get rotation issue. Let us know if you got any question.

Noob to SGS4G for T Mobile...

Okay people I just bought this phone and I'm coming from MyTouch 4G. I've been reading for the past 2 days about how to flash a SGS4G and honestly,..it's crazy! Little overwhelming to be Honest...to the point, I rooted my phone with Superoneclick, I have superuser, so I know it's rooted. Plus, I have Titanium Backup running on my phone. Everything is still FACTORY SET on the phone. It is running 2.2.1 Froyo. I did read about Froyo udate zip CWM and recovery and have downloaded them. My question is since I want to flash A Rom does it have to be Froyo only? If there is such a thing?? Or can it be Gingerbread 2.3.6? And is there anything else I need to download? I know I have to follow to the tee on the OP that the Dev. says to do. I just want to be sure exactly what I need to do..

The gb ext4 starter pack saved me alot of headache when I first got this phone. Hands down it is the best way to go. Just make sure you follow the directions exactly. Its guides like this and the people that make them that make XDA so great.
I'm new to it as well and like you are saying, it's overwhelming to root and flash on this phone. But I followed the GB starter pack the other day and included the Vahalla Final rom as my choice and everything worked great. Some things actually happened a hair different than described and I thought it screwed up but it worked.
But I think I just screwed up trying to do a restore

Most will tell you if you want a rom ported do it yourself. The devs are working on what they are working on. It isn't really our place as end-users to make request (my opinion of course) rather be grateful for all the awesome **** they have done and are working on. So no... it isn't easy.
And yes --> We have some fantastic ROMS.

Hello guys. Hey so I'm from the Samsung phone side of flashing and am not new to this. But i do have one question . What rom can I use and still be able to go back to stock? Im thinking that if I stay away from the 1.8 ruu stuff I'll be ok? And if I do how do we return to 100% stock . Thanks ahead of time for your insight and help
No one can answer
you need to root using the root method, then install a rom that is based on 1.72 whatever. If you want to go back stock, use the 1.72 ruu.
But if I try the newer 8 series then I'm stuck on that
Yes, you're stuck, until bootloader is unlocked.

I just followed JSLEnterprises method to debrand ...
now I have a clean HTC Vanilla XL .. as they say
Looking to try new Roms, are their any available that or compatible with my device, or I should I just patiently wait for flashable
why dont you visit the dev section and see for yourself?
didnt think CWM was working at all at the moment
Wow man chill i did and I just wanted clarification. And I never said I used cwm just talking about the ruu roms we have . Why is everyone so quick to flame and jump , some people like to be sure that's the case so they don't get in hole they cant get out of. Thanks for your concern but that's what forums are for to help each other

Well for one thing, don't use the 1.85 RUU that just got leaked today until root is regained for it. I'm running 1.82, though I'm hard pressed to find any improvement since I didn't have any problems beforehand (like the WiFi problems people were having on 1.73). Maybe a bit smoother? Idk.
That's my dilemma my phone runs great it has its moments but all in all good. But I like to tinker and its hard not to . I'm looking for some good reasons to and against . Any feedback is great thank you

I mean, some things might go wonky if you don't do a factory reset before and after flashing the 1.83 RUU and tried to root. I know that two people (one of them being me) lost our lock screen rings after running the root script for 1.83. Re-RUUing with wipes fixed everything.
Otherwise you really have nothing to lose by doing this besides maybe your warranty and whatever time you have to spend setting up your phone again (TiBu is a godsend)
I have paid for many apps.to save me time in the whole dev side. I have also.made a few eons for Samsung.infuse but never let them out because people are.crazy. I'm used to Samsung and all new to HTC
Sorry for bothering you !!!!
