Then, using an open safe pry tool carefully pry apart the back housing of the phone from the front housing, starting at one end and working your way slowly around the phone, releasing the clips.
Figure 2
Remove the main pop connector located on the left side of Figure 3. Simply use a pry tool and apply pressure upwards and the cable will release.
Now gently lift the 2 flex cables attached to the housing by adhesive. Carefully pry under the cables to release them from the housing.
Then, you can use the open safe pry tool (included free with the replacement parts) to remove the camera ribbon cable off its socket in the motherboard.
Figure 3
Now you can remove the motherboard, careful not to damage any ribbons or cables in the process. Use the open safe pry tool or your fingers where it will help to separate the two, and use your safe open pry tool to lift the tape and disconnect the antenna wire.
You are now left with the screen assembly with front housing. Use a heat gun or hair dryer to warm the front of the screen for about 45 seconds using medium heat. Use quick movements around the outside edges of the screen.
Now use a safe open pry tool to pry between the screen and the housing. Carefully remove the housing. Reheat the adhesive if necessary.
Once released you can now replace the LCD + Touch Screen Digitizer.
Reverse the instructions above to reassemble your phone.

[Q] How to replace vibration motor

My vibration motor in the Nexus s broke. Now I want to replace it. I'm planning to order this motor: http://www.tvc-mall.com/details/Replacement-Vib-Vibration-Motor-for-All-Samsung-Models-SAMO-SAM/
I opened up my Nexus to a degree where I could see the motor, but I couldn't see how the wires are connected. Do I have to braze the wires or can I just plug them in or how does it work?
Thanks!
Are you positive it is broken? Mine stopped working on me a few times before. I would tap the phone firmly, powered it off and tap again and reboot. Problem solved. Just a fyi

A 15W soldering iron should run you around $10 US.
I highly recommend soldering wires on random scrap if this is your first experience at soldering or you're gonna end up with a mess.
Edit: Or you can cut the wires, strip the ends, twist them together and solder (then cover them with heatshrink/electrical tape).
Should be easier for a beginner to do this than solder on tiny pads and remove epoxy from a PCB.

Thanks, pretty stupid, I didn't think of that. I might not even have to solder at all if i twist them together tightly and then bind them with tape.
riichii, have you managed to do it? I'm positive my vibration motor is broken as well, but I cannot find an exact replacement online. A friend of mine had a broken samsung j700 lying around so I salvaged the motor from it and soldered it in my nexus s, but it didn't work (you could hear the motor rattling, but it wasn't vibrating enough, it was less than my broken original motor). I was wondering if the part you linked was working or not. Thanks

Samsung Captivate i897 take apart/repair guide:

Figure 1
Remove all six screws on the back of the cover shown in Figure 1 and keep them somewhere safe .Two of them is a little tricky to get to. What you need to do, is GENTLY pull up in the center of the battery latch, and then pull out, it should slide out relatively easily. The final two screws should now be reachable.
Start with the bottom end of the phone first, and begin to pry the screen out from the edges. The bezel and back cover of the phone are all one piece around the screen. The bottom edge should come off without too much trouble.
Figure 2
Release the last clip at the top from the rest of the phone: With a plastic tool or very small flathead screw driver, VERY carefully lift one side of the case as shown in the picture above, slide the driver head in and gently pry up. The last clip should come free without too much force.
Figure 3
Everything with a red arrow as shown in the Figure 3 needs to come off of the mainboard to enable removal. There are a couple more things to do before we can pull that mainboard off.
First, we need to unlatch the ribbon cable from the speaker. Flip the back clamp on the connector up to enable release of the cable. Carefully remove a piece of blue tape over the connector and cable.
Figure 4
There's one last screw to take care of as shown in Figure 4. Once that is out, you can pull the right side of the board up, and the left should follow pretty easily, just be careful of your cables and be absolutely sure everything is disconnected before you pull that board off.
Here is the front side of the board with all of the shielding removed. This basically entails taking the micro SD and sim card board off. When doing this, be sure to disconnect the cable that runs from the top board to the underside of the main board.
If you are replacing the LCD or touch screen digitizer, you will want to use your hot air gun or hair dryer to heat up the glue that holds the glass in place, and then you can gently pry it off using your open safe pry tool.
That completes the step by step teardown of the Samsung Captivate.
Now you will be able to replace any parts on your Samsung Captivate i897.
Simply replace the damaged parts with the new ones and reverse these instructions to put your phone back together.

My bad. Didn't see there was already a guide for this model.
You can never have too much free help though right!
Thanks for the guide!
I was hoping to get some help here - I just got a used captivate for free, the buttons and the sound didn't work, so it wasn't much use to the owner..
I decided to get inside and see what might be the matter...and lo and behold, it looks like a pin got disconnected from the mainboard.
What steps would I need to take to try to re-attach it?
I've attached a pic of the pin in question.

Same for I896
Are the I896 and I897 screen+digitizer identical? I'm ordering from Canada, and all of the screens have the AT&T logo at the top, while my current one that I want to replace does not have that logo. Will the AT&T lcd+digitzer still work?
Thanks!

[HOW TO]Samsung Galaxy S4 Wireless Charging Mod [Touchstone Version]

Samsung Galaxy S4 Wireless Charging Mod
[*]Today I'm going to show you guys how to make a Galaxy S4 wireless Charging Mod .(I'll detail the process as far as possible,PLZ Let me know if I missed anything!!!!:cyclops
[*] Theoretically this mod works for any phone which support USB charging and has extra 1.5mm gap between back cover and battery.
[*] But this mod will not work on the phone which comes with a metal cover (IE: I897 , iPhone 4-4s),
Because metal is kind of electromagnetic shielding material, it will block magnetic energy.
[*] If you have a plan put this on iPhone 4 or 4S , You will have to separate the metal sheet from the glass back cover, then trim a hole then bind these back.(Twitter me about the details @wifixit_iphone)
[*]Alert: DO Not Trying to connect this mod directory to the battery connector.

Ok Let's get started !!!!!!!!:highfive:
(1) At first I'm going to introduce what's in this mod kit.

As I know most of people will buy a pixi or pre back cover then peel the coil and sticker from it.
But u should be very careful when peeling off the silver sticker,
Any bend or damage will increase the risk of disturbing energy transfer.
(1) Test before installing or soldering the coil to your phone.
Once you put the coil and sticker above the touchstone you will hear some buzzing .
5.60v Non loaded voltage is normal..
(2) Find the Negative and Positive Terminal on your phone. MARK DOWN
This is ATT SAMSUNG GALAXY S4.
(This is just for reference cause some carrier has their own version )
( Some version of S4 will not come with this connector,if you know circuit board you can solder wire directory to the component which controls USB CHARGING )
(3) Now we can work on the coil part.
Desolder two square copper
The red big square area is positive u set ur positive terminal in anywhere within this area.
[I @wifixit_iphone me if you dont understand this step.[/I]
(4) Trim the Nickle stick or copper tape
On S4 I just cut two thick nickel stick and solder these two connectors (in the first pic) to the stick.
Align the connector before you bonding the coil to your back cover.
@wifixit_iphone me if you don't understand this step.
(This is importan!!~~!!~~)
Thanks for Reading.
You can get everything u need from here http://r.ebay.com/TT90wG

[Tutorial] How to Fix your Pico's Headphone Socket

Getting audio cuts, left or right channel always disconnects, audio distortion, or headphones not working at all? Well your Pico's headphone socket is loose. Solders on the headphone socket are somehow, cracked or just got detached from the board. Here's how to fix it...
DISCLAIMER: I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE IF THIS TUTORIAL BROKE YOUR PICO. THIS WILL ALSO VOID YOUR WARRANTY. PROCEED AT YOUR OWN RISK
Ok let's get started. Here's what you need:
- Pico ( of course )
- Torx and Philips screwdriver
- Soldering Iron
- Soldering lead
Step 1: Remove all the screws on the case using a small torx screwdriver and remove the case
{

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Step 2: Remove the screws on the board using philips screwdriver
Be sure to keep the screws in a safe place
Step 3: Remove those black tapes. Also keep them in a safe place...
Step 4: Disconnect the Ribbon Cables...
Step 5: Take out the board CAREFULLY...
Step 6: Prepare your soldering iron and soldering lead
Step 7: Solder the contacts... ONLY solder the contacts pointed at the picture...
Don't apply too much solder! Solder it CAREFULLY! We don't want to short it...
After soldering...
I'm not really that good at soldering but that gets the job done
Now put your Pico back together and test it out. If this fixes your headphone connection problems, CONGRATULATIONS /) ! If not, try again

I would strongly advise you apply heat syncs when doing this, otherwise you can end up frying components near the headphone socket (I've managed to do this before when using old solder that wouldn't melt easily)
Another tip, use the smallest tip you can find for the soldering iron. if all you have is a chisel tip, don't use it. it's too much risk!
lastly, make sure you clean up the old solder. don't mix new + old
I also recommend looking at some soldering guides. it's easy to do a bad solder and make stuff even worse.
