G2X Gingerbread Ubuntu Root - T-Mobile LG G2x

I'm running Ubuntu 11.10 x64 and I've had no luck with SuperOneClick 2.2, 3.1, or 3.3. They all get hung up at some point during the process. Fortunately this is before anything is actually done. Debugging is on and adb daemon finds the phone.
I do NOT want to install another ROM on my phone!!! I just want to root my phone so that I can remove the stock apps. Is this possible on Linux? If so, how? Please do not direct me to posts pertaining to flashing ROM's or Froyo guides.
Thanks!

No, you do not require windows. I don't remember of the top of my head how to do it, but it is possible. If you understand adb, then do the exploit manually through adb, rather than through superoneclick.

[ROOT] G2x Root via SuperOneClick

UPDATE:
The SuperOneClick rooting method outlined in this thread currently only works for Android 2.2. It does not work with Gingerbread 2.3.3.
To root 2.3.3 -
1) Install CWM (ClockworkMod Recovery): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1056847
2) Flash rooted ROM of your choice. Here is a stock rooted 2.3.3 ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1179748
Here's a brief guide on how to root the T-Mobile G2x. This assumes that you already have adb installed. If you do not, a quick search will point you in the right direction
Note: I take no credit for rooting the G2x. I am not the developer of SuperOneClick, and this is a simplified version of a guide already posted by domi007 in the O2x forum (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=953182). I am just posting a guide in the G2x forum because no one else has yet.
1) Install ADB driver: http://www.junefabrics.com/bin2/LGDriver.exe
2) Enable USB debugging on your phone (Settings->Applications->Development), and connect your phone to your computer via USB.
3) Run SuperOneClick: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
4) Choose the option "Root"
It's really that simple...enjoy
update:
jnichols959 has provided a simple solution to rooting the G2x for Mac and Linux users. We hope that keeping two separate threads will not add to forum clutter. On the contrary we think each thread will be less cluttered and therefore be more helpful to the end user.

I apologize for the Windows only solution I've posted. Since I moved in with my girlfriend, Windows has weaseled it's way back into my household. However, there was a time when I wouldn't let a Windows box come within 100 yards of my place of residence.
Thank you very much!

Ha no problem. I can just install Parallels or Fusion today. I did manage to get SuperOneClick running on my mac using Mono. However, I don't see any way to install the LG drivers executable file on the Mac, so I doubt SOC will work in this manner without those drivers... not sure if I want to risk trying it.
GOOD! i wanted to know if it really worked with our phones! (without test myself)
thanks alot
NOW all i gotta do is hurry up and wait for m phone to get here (some time today.......GRRR)
Hey thanks for posting this! I currently own a G2, rooted with cm7. I'm planning on picking this beast up in-store on Wednesday and I'm already itching to root it and get a custom ROM on there.
One question though, does this method achieve a permanent root? My only experience with android thus far is the G2, which required an involved process to root. Is this phone just a lot easier to root for some reason??
And then as far as recoveries and ROM's I'm assuming those haven't been released for this phone yet, right??

Yes permanent root. This G2x is not as locked down as the G2, making the process a whole lot easier. And no, no recovery yet, just stay tuned to these forums.
Oh god yes
I already have ADB driver and SOC ready and I rooted few phones through this way.
It's good to know G2x can be rooted easily.
Rooted=no more junk!

Nope. It will not.
Received the phone today, rooted it within 5 minutes within hooking up to the computer using the superoneclick tool.
I think it took longer to install the drivers, and SuperOneClick than it did to root the phone.
Alright good to know. Just wondering than if yall have a general idea how long it usually takes a device to get an unlock with root, I am not sure because this would be the first phone for me that I am getting close to the release date.

If you want to SIM unlock this phone, you can call t-mobile after you have purchased the phone, give them the IMEI number, and in about 2 weeks they will email you the unlock code for the phone.
Mine will be here today sometime.
How do I get the SuperOneClick download, the site shortfuse.org page will not load Help, I really want to get this rooted. Thanks

[Q] Best Rooting Method

I've researched around and there seems to be quite a few methods of rooting my asus transformer. I'm no expert and can understand the methods but want to root my tab without, well, 'rooting' it!!!
What is the most simplest method for rooting my device? Is the build number important to what BLOB version I use? Do I really know what that means?
Dumb it down for me please.
Thanks in advance...
Agreed. I just bought my transformer today, and I've been on the transformers thread for quite some time now and I'm still a little confused about the root process. This is obviously not my first rodeo (hince my signature below). The transformer section needs to be updated and organized better, to the benefit of noobs and androidaholics alike. Can I get a mod to do this, and have the Reference Guide in the development section updated and possibly have better and thorough instructions? Speaking from experience, doing this will prevent alot of un-needed posts clogging up the forum.
So far, from what I gather is that if you just bought one as of this date, and your transformer has 3.1 or 3.2, you have to use the nvflash method to root. If this is true, then my question is, what if I have 3.1, and i want to root, but do not want to install a custom rom at this time? The instructions say that you have to install the prime rom, in which I don't want to do.
While i am no linux user, (having been a windows follower for decades), i find this linux-based root procedure to be extremely user-friendly and a no-brainer to deploy and use.
This is one of the best at hand: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=16239991&postcount=1
I just wrote my own unrooting script and that script that you mentioned looks pretty good to me. A lot easier than the method I used to root.
If you have a B7O tablet, you may not be able to use nvflash anymore. There are reports that ASUS changed the secure boot key on the latest versions, so the one used in nvflash won't work.
I have the b6 model with the build no in my signature. Which method do I use? Please advise

I just rooted my transformer using this method. It works. Its the closest you are going to get to a one click method at this time. And my transformer had android 3.1 out of box and i updated to 3.2 before attempting this method.
Lol I have "bricked" my Transformer like 5 times today trying to get the god forsaken Clockwork Recovery Mod installed...
I've gotten really good at rooting the thing, but every time I try to push Clockwork Recovery with nvflash, either the recovery doesn't work (nothing happens after Power+Volume down followed by Volume Up... It just sits there), or the thing won't boot.
If anyone has any idea how to fix this, it would be greatly appreciated. I really want Netflix on this thing, and the only I seem to be able to change out the necessary library is through CWM...

After I used Clockwork Recovery to flash 3.2, Clockwork went away! I even ran the Live CD again to see if I could get it to go. Does Clockwork Recovery not support 3.2 yet?
That i'm not sure of . I chose not to install clockworkmod recovery.

I believe you can, but you can't use a one click root method. Everybody still says it's easy to do, but I don't quite get it. I'm not an idiot, but I just don't understand some of the stuff they say to do. Apparantly you have to "install nvflasher through clockworkmod". I see where I can download clockworkmod, but it's just a bunch of DLL files and an exe I think. Then I saw something about installing drivers and they lost me. My only guess was the drivers it installs when you plug your phone into your computer via the usb port? I don't know. Anyway, after installing the nvflasher, I guess you can just flash roms. I don't quite understand how to do that either though, lol.

From there you can flash roms. In the dev section there is a stock rooted ROM by xboarder.

Just a heads up...I don't think this will work. Unless SOC updated to a new version. Just search the forums use this "how to root after OTA " I recommend NVFLash CWM then if you want 2.3.3 rooted search "stock OTA rooted." Posted by xboarder. Or use a custom rom. This has been asked to many times. Yes it is possible to root some other way. That to is covered by xboarder also. Unless SOC has a new version out with in the last week it wont Work.....read post 4665. But I do have great news......the search options in the forums do work and even Google searches will direct you to xda. If you find a post about something read all of it. Then read the OP(opening post) 3 to 4 time looking at dates and change logs..
So to recap
1) SOC will not work. NVFlash clockwork.
2) use the search/Google.
3) if you read this and did not see xboarders name at least once befor this post, reread.
4) read and reread.....keep reading....the answers are posted.
5) read the OP. Look at dates and change logs.
If you don't like my response to this post go buy an iPhone. The rest of us are sick of seeing the same questions. That is all

Yeah, I might look at it again and give it a try later on. There's still a few things i'm confused about though.
I didn't know you could flash roms without rooting first. But I guess flashing a rooted rom technically does root your phone? It's just a different way of achieving root? Also, if you are gonna flash roms, I thought you had to do the nvflash routine.. which would root your phone anyway.. lol.
I believe some cases that could be true. Root could be needed to install a flash recovery. Our phone use nvidia. The nvflash utility makes it easy. Some one please correct me if I am wrong. When you nvflash you are replacing the factor/stock recovery with CWM. At that point you could put any Rom you like. I kind of see it like a boot disk. Root allows you to see system folders and such. Kind of like having admin rites on your computers operating system. Root also aloes programs to modify system information. To compare this to the common computer root is like an admin account in windows. Unroot is like a user account that companies give you on their computer. CWM is like having a boot disk. I hope I cleared that up for some one.

Root first?
So with this whole NVflash thing, does that mean you really don't need to root first, because NVflashing is already rooting it for you?

Yes and no, in that order. You can use nvflash to replace the stock recovery with a custom recovery, such as clockworkmod recovery. Using custom recovery, you can flash any rom that's compatible with the phone. Most of the roms have superuser privileges (root) built into them.
Good news i found a root for and it works i am so happy and now i dont have to mess with the eaglesblood rom (now offence) but you do have to flash clockworkmod recovery in order to flash the su root package for my info go to facebook and search LG G2x (official)

Hey everyone, I just want to let you all know that I was able to do the NVFlash, backup everything, and install CM7.
I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THE HECK I WAS WORRIED ABOUT!!!! It was so incredibly easy.
CM7 is installed, however I'm having issues with my APN now working and losing its information, I've posted for help on that in another thread.
Thanks again, and to those out there who worry like I did...have no fear....CWM is a neat tool, ESPECIALLY for backup of your entire phone.

[Q] New Charge owner (OS X based) needs root help and flashing questions

Guys,
Been reading all night so i appreciate your help and patience. I just picked up a charge (coming from thunderbolt - finally gave up) and am trying to root and flash some of the roms here.
I am very familar with adb and tried to root but it hung at gingerbreak. from what i understand in order to root, i need to downgrade my firmware to ed1. i am trying to figure out how to do this on a mac.
i downloaded heimdall which looked to be the right solution, but when i load the package in hemidall i get the following error: firmware.xml is missing from the package.
once i am rooted, do i have to use heimdall/odin or can we download zips to sdcard as with the thuderbolt?
also not finding a clear way to install cwm without odin either.
any help would be greatly appreciated.
sincerely
eric
The ADB method is completely wrong. We use custom kernels to root. They are included in all custom ROMs but if you want to just stay stock, flash them in Heimdall (I don't know how to use it, as I use a REAL computer). And most of the time you can just flash new roms in CWM, the only time you can't is when you upgrade GB-Froyo etc. Or when the developer says it's odin only. People have had luck emulating Windows within OS X and using odin from there.
Sent from my Droid Charge running GummyFroyo 1.9.1
Eric, the vast majority of users here use Odin for flashing. I have a Mac and a PC but have not used Heimdall simply because Odin was available, so I can't directly answer questions about Heimdall unfortunately (although I suppose I should learn about it eventually since I'd be able to use my laptop to flash).
There are multiple ways to get rooted, I guess the first question is where you want to end up? Were you looking at Froyo or Gingerbread based ROMs?
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks

Agreed! At least until we see Cyanogen(which shouldn't be too long) so we can compare, I've never used Cyanogen before and I'm pretty interested to see what all the hype is about.
Heimdall doesn't work on the Charge
I know your pain, I am a fellow Mac owner. Mac's are sick computers, but I wont touch the portable products.
Anyhow, grab VMWare and get yourself some Windows XP. If you found yourself to XDA Forum, I asure you can figure those out.
One item to mention though, if you use the integrated version on VMWare, and you share files between the PC and mac, the file that you plan to flash with Odin must be in the PC area. You can unzip it on the mac, you can download it on the mac, but when it comes time for Odin, it must be on the PC.
I found this all out by trial and error.
