Skyrocket or gs2 - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

Looking to get away from HTC and the vivid and get a gs2 or maybe even a note or 4s. Would you guys recommend this over the gs2 and why
I also see the dev here is a little behind the reg gs2, I'm not complain king but is there any reason why
Also how is the headphone jack here. Any sudden movement with the vivid and it disconnects and it doesnt help I only use I for the gym and my workouts are weights based and fast paced
Thx

I have had the gs2 and now am on the skyrocket. Both phones in my opinion are great. You can't go wrong either way. I use my phone at the gym and no problems with audio disconnect. If you wish to have lte then get a skyrocket. I was going to get a vivid at on time my buddy had one I tried it out for a few days and didn't like it but this is my opinion so you have to find what works for you

I cant say I've used the GS2, but with ATT expanding their LTE markets, I didnt want to get stuck with a non-LTE phone for the next 2 years. Just my 2cents.

After having lte its not an issue. I'm in NYC and I'm on 4g most of the tkme . Phone speed and customization is

My iit guy needs a Droid he offered me his upgrade as a favour so I can get something for free or get a note or iPhone for the diff over 200
He knows I'm having issues with it. And he needs a Droid to learn it for his work and side work so he doesn't care what he gets

The i777 has cm9 and is more developed for as of right now, so if customization is the most important get the gs2. The skyrocket is a great phone, but the development is behind the other gs2s out there.

True, but with the Note and the T-Mo GS2 using the same Qualcomm SOC, it's probably a safe bet that we'll get and official CM maintainer sooner than later.

I owned both the Galaxy Note and the Skyrocket and I have to say that I'm pleased with both. In regards to the SGS2, as mentioned by others on here, if you live in an LTE city then I would go with the Skyrocket, if you don't then I would just buy a used SGS2 on Craigslist or some other site since the beauty of Android phones comes with the ability to customize it and since you will be technically voiding your warranty if you do anything against Samsung warranty regulations might as well go for a use one.

skyrocket end of story.. I mean cmon we have ics, lte, a bigger screen, its a samsung

Gotta recommend the note as long as you are okay with the gigantic stature. Otherwise the skyrocket is awesome.

I was faced with the same choice when I finally switched over (iPhone user)
and after doing a little research and talking to people, the Skyrocket just seemed like a better choice. 4 of my coworkers all have the GS2 and they said that they like the Skyrocket better... It all comes to personal choice, just go down and play with them both and see what you like...

So your choices are:
GS2, iPhone 4S or Skyrocket.
If it's a choice between skyrocket and GS2, I'd say Skyrocket. Bigger screen, LTE, NFC. Unless of course development is really that important to you.
The headphone jack is very solid and secure. No probs playing sports or training with it. It won't budge.
The choice between iPhone and Android. Somewhat different story. For me I prefer Android: no iTunes, bigger screens (instead of the postage stamp screen on the iPhone), I love the turn-by-turn navigation on google maps, LTE and the fact it's customizable if I choose to do so (it's nice to have the option).

What's your opinion?

I'm thinking about returning the SR and getting the OGs2. I'm starting to have a bad feeling that the SR is not going to be supported very much development wise. Don't get me wrong I'm very pleased with the device. I've had good battery, signal, call quality ect... I just thought ide reach out to the SR Community and get your valued opinion. Starting to miss my CM7. Thanks everyone.

Do what u think is best. Any answer you get is going to be biast the people on here who have the skyrocket have it because they like it. If not they reaturned it.
Well it depends on if you actually have LTE that would prob be my deciding factor
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using XDA App
Yeah, the LTE made my descision easy, since im gonna have it for 1 1/2 years i want it to be capable for LTE when they roll it out over here. Plus the bigger screen for videos, games, etc. It's also confirmed to have ICS and im guessing fairly quick, since this is AT&T's flagship device to compete with Verizon's Galaxy Nexus

I'm thinking of getting a S2 myself... data just turned off today for no reason.....
Nice..
To each his own, but if you live in an LTE market, I can't imagine willingly going back to a non-LTE phone.
As for community support, as long as it can be rooted and we're promised official ICS, I'm happy.

They say its getting ICS..but when?.. ogs2 already has it available..
K then get rid of it n swap for og if u want

Well thanks for everyone's reply. Ill probably hang on another week or so and make my decision. I don't live in an LTE market but that doesn't really matter much to me.

I had the ogs2 for a month. Just don't see how is it any better, besides the Cm7/MIUI custom roms. I will never go back. Love the big screen, data speed was able to video chat with no lag, deleted almost 100mb of bloatware and my phone is running even faster. What are the real benefits of the osgs2? I must be blind

Would you consider swapping your Skyrocket for a AT&T Galaxy S II in minty fresh condition, all stock? I love the GSII but I'd like the bigger screen.
Or, I would also trade my wife's white iPhone 4s (also mint) for a Skyrocket... She wants an Android instead, so I would give her my Galaxy S II in that case and still use the Skyrocket.
Either way, I'd like to go Skyrocket but I don't have any upgrades coming as we are new (2 months) to AT&T.
Let me know if this isn't totally nuts and you are interested.
Thanks!

I had the ogs2 and it was great due to Dev support. I'm in Toronto and lte its awesome at my house. Dec support is big deal to me to but LTE is a fair trade off. The only thing I can see myself in now is a galaxy nexus.otherwise ogs2 is if you have no lte coverage.

I would wait it out development should be picking up soon take a chance. I know I would regret swapping because as soon as I do custom roms will start flooding the forums. Its happened to me a few times haha. And having LTE available isn't bad either...... just saying
I also had the OGS2 loved that phone and the development was crazy but considering this phone is faster stock than the og was with roms and kernals id stay. Also remember Lte is gonna get better and better. Also imagine what this monster is gonna be like when we get some more developers
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using XDA App
I think dev support will begin to ramp up as this phone is released in more markets around the would. Also more people will get it as they see lte commercials and walk into stores and ask for the best android phone on the network. Regardless as everyone says its really up yo you. I love this device and it performs great for me. Plus data speeds are up to 13mb down for me even on hspa+. Ill never go back.

The amount of dev work available to the ogsgsii is amazing. With the compatible counterpart the i9100 being sold all over the world, it's hard to compete with. That's a big reason most of us love android, all the things you can do with it.
It's possible for a lot to get done on the skyrocket. All it takes is 2 or 3 skilled people. Just need to find them!

I just got the $99 SG2 at Target, first android phone. But considering the Skyrocket, as I'm in the 30 day window.
What makes me nervous about LTE, is seeing users getting throttled on it. Even if they have the "grandfathered" unlimited plan as I do.
And there's no way to turn off LTE as I understand it. Maybe that can be done in custom ROMs?

Skyrocket the best phone?

I am seriously in love with my white skyrocket! I've had the Galaxy Nexus, Droid Razr, GS2, and thunderbolt in the last 4 months and hands down the skyrocket is the best phone in the market.
Anybody disagree or agree?

I totally agree! I love my white skyrocket only thing that kills me is the lack of new roms for the skyrocket. There alot of quality rooms ATM but i cone from the evo 4g where roms were popping out every hour it seemed like it. I know the momentum is building so can't wait for the new roms coming out soon. Great phone!

I disagree the T989 is the best phone. Lol but I get where your coming from the Sgs2 line is definitely worth it and better than most phones out. I'm coming from the Galaxy Nexus as well. The memory was the main deal breaker for me but I may get it back later. Not too sure right now.
But I have 16 on board and 32 on top.
The roms are coming along.

Thats our crappy carriers fault!! Damn you AT&T!!!
This phones a beast, I love it.
When I look at an iphone4, I see a childs toy. The colors look so bland and the screen looks so small lol. This phone has spoiled me!
It is the best phone for the money if you want LTE. The best phone I've ever owned for a few weeks was the SGH-i777 but it didn't have LTE. The only drawback.
Skyrocket is $150. Added to the AT&T family plan, it only costs ~$32.50 a month for standard plan and 2 gigs of data.
Since no one in my family has Verizon, Verizon plans cost me $90 a month, plus an additional ~$15 of Verizon mystery tax. I would say Verizon LTE is better though, but it is unbearably expensive. And I don't even like the Galaxy Nexus anyway. No microSDHC slot, very limited video codec support. I don't really care about the camera so much. But I watch a lot of video on this thing. Galaxy Nexus is not the best device for hassle-free watch anything you can download from the web device.
It probably depends on your priorities. But, at the moment, if I had to get a phone all over again, I'd probably still choose the SR.
The only thing this thing seems to be missing is an HD screen. But, I suspect (aka, guessing) b/c of the lower res, it gets better battery life.. which is more important to me.
If data wasn't an issue, I'd slightly prefer the i777 for the size (and it seemed slightly more consistent in the month I had it).
I love my Skyrocket, but I don't think there is a "best phone." One has to choose their phone based on what they want. I for one wanted a huge beautiful screen and ridiculously fast speeds, so I am happy with my choice.

I noticed you said you had a RAZR. Any feedback on why you didn't like the phone? I'm currently trying to decide between an i727 and a RAZR, and the RAZR is $100 less than the i727 right now. Plus the RAZR seems more durable and "shouldn't" need a case to add bulk to it.

Have played with a friends RAZR extensively...its a great device, but not one I would buy. Main reasons - the device feels really wide because of the bezels and the screen suffers from a sickly green tinge when not viewed from straight on. The display is also pentile which made text appear more jagged on the SR's samoled plus. With that said, build quality is awesome and love the splash proof coating. Somehow, beer always ends up getting spilled on my phone...
Love the phone but hate the battery life. Barely any use and phone is nearly dead before my work day is over. Charging is bad, very slow. When using GPS ona car adapter, phone dies while on the charger. Again, charge rate is slower than use.

I'd really recommend getting the Galaxy SII (not Skyrocket).
Just. Plain. Old. Sexy. Classy. SII.
The Skyrocket has a larger screen (4.5"), but from what I hear, it seems to have a few more issues than the SII original. Regardless, I still hear it's a great phone, but I think as far as getting future updates and Samsung support, original Galaxy SII is the safest bet.
If you really want a huge phone, look at the Galaxy Note.
And... Stay away from the Infuse. It's considered really old and outdated now. Yes, it's still a perfectly usable phone and it performs everyday tasks wonderfully. But when you can get the SII now for $100 or less, I just don't see why you'd want to lock into 2 years with a phone that is already a year old.
Plus, if you're a gamer, you definitely want to go with SII and not the Infuse. The RAM difference makes some games not be "compatible" with the Infuse.
To be honest, stay away from Samsung phones. I have two, a captivate and a infuse. I'm over Samsung because of the way they shelve their phones after a couple of months and all the problems in their software. I bought an Atrix 2 and its the best phone i have ever had. At first i wasnt sure about it because its a moto phone. Now that i have had it awhile i recommend this phone to anyone. Best battery life, 4 gb of space for apps and i got an over the air update on the second day of me having the phone. Its on the list for a ics update too. I have not had one single problem with this phone. Just my opinion but i would not get a samsung.

I guess I'm a Samsung fan boy. I have always had a Samsung, even before smart phones. I had a Captivate which I gave to my wife when I went with an Infuse. Really love the big screen and I would get a Note if I had the money.....Really doesn't matter if AT&t never pushes out any updates, because I am running CM7.
I recommend the Galaxy S II (i777). I like the Infuse and Skyrocket, but the i777 is perfect. I'd also recommend the Skyrocket over the Infuse, purely because of the RAM difference. The Infuse can't be my daily device, because I need more RAM. So, in my opinion . . .
Galaxy S II (i777) > Skyrocket > Infuse
Samsung may have its issues with software, but theres no denying that their products are well made. Almost everything in my house is made by Samsung. They never die.
That aside, what is your budget and requirements? If you have the money and like the size, get a Note. I've heard nothing but good things about it and developers here are already playing with it. There doesn't seem to be any love for the Skyrocket though. If you're strapped for cash, I'd definately look into the Infuse. The price fluctuates from $50 to free sometimes, so you might get a great deal on one. It's one of the best phones I've ever had. All of the software issues have already been resolved by the devs here. While it may be a little dated by 2012 standards, it handles almost everything I throw at it and you just can't brick it. That's something those ****ty HTCs and Motorolas can't claim.

Not bad
The infuse is a nice phone from what I have experienced. Doesn't look like it will get CM9 though so I would avoid it.
The screen is absolutely beautiful despite it's pitiful resolution. The colors are stunning and viewable from all angles making pictures better looking than what you took a picture of! Also sometimes I forget I am reading off of my phone when using google books and think it's my kindle.
RAM is pitiful (512?! Really Samsung??) but the phone operates smoothly despite.
Battery life is better than anything HTC has to offer.
I am personally looking for an Atrix 4g and it's laptop dock. Pretty sweet combo.
I got the skyrocket. Nice phone.

Considering Galaxy Nexus...

Now, I'm not exactly dissatisfied with the Infuse itself as a phone, as the development here has been phenomenal, especially with getting us ICS.
The Galaxy Nexus came into consideration with the price drop that I believe only lasts till July 12th. With the Galaxy Nexus I'd get 4G LTE (or would I?), an off contract phone (which is an advantage in some ways despite the cost), "pure google" and long term software support (essentially avoiding fragmentation). I'd also get all the new hardware, yatta yatta yatta... I would essentially be switching to the Nexus line, as this is obviously not an upgrade.
What do you all think, is this worth the $350 for software support and new goodies coming from the Infuse? Would I need to pay for a new SIM card if I get LTE? I'd plan on keeping this phone as long as it's supported. Once my parents dump me off the family plan I was planning on getting as much data as possible and as little of everything else and switching to Google voice.
Thanks for any input, I always like to get some feedback on "major" purchase decisions.
the $350 play store galaxy nexus does not have lte. youll get the same hspa+ speeds you do on your infuse. the camera is not as good, but the screen is better. the battery life is not as good, but the performance is better. its the best phone you can buy off-contract. youll get android updates first, and you can even run jelly bean right now. and if you have the money and want to buy it, its a good phone.

I went from Infuse to GNex and absolutely love it; granted, this was almost 6 months ago. You can bet the farm that Google will have their next Nexus device out in the near future.
Things to consider:
If you stay on At&t, no, you won't have LTE b/c you will need to buy the GSM version of the GNex
Hardware isn't all that new, but it is pretty solid.
Screen size IS smaller than the Infuse b/c of virtual softkeys.
Honestly, it is a decision you will have to make; asking here will get you a bunch of "the infuse is an awesome phone, keep ittt!!!" If you ask the same question over on the GNex forums you will get "You still own a single core phone!? trololol"
Its all up to what you want, not the often biased opinions of others

I went from Infuse to GNex and absolutely love it; granted, this was almost 6 months ago. You can bet the farm that Google will have their next Nexus device out in the near future.
Things to consider:
If you stay on At&t, no, you won't have LTE b/c you will need to buy the GSM version of the GNex

How is the screen compared to the Infuse with the Pentile matrix and all? Also, how is the signal (I've been having signal issues lately and have been trying all sorts of modems)?

I've had two Galaxy Nexus, the first had a great screen, little more blue than the Infuse's but xhdpi looks amazing. My second has a slightly grainy screen w/ a slight screen burn for like 2 seconds any time I spend too long on one page.
As for signal issues; stock 4.0.4 OTA from Verizon solved all my signal issues and w/ the GNex, the radios stick when flashing roms.

Are there any build quality issues I need to worry about? Just seems like a good question to ask after you mentioned having a second.

Not at all; the only thing you really need to watch out for is if you flash a lot of roms. (Also no PIT file available for LTE Nexus)
The only reason I am on my second is b/c nand writing completely stopped working and essentially the phone stopped booting. So just be careful what you flash and make sure you always wipe everything correctly yadah yadah..
So yeah NAND is the only issue I have encountered. The GNex doesn't have gorilla glass, but I've been rocking mine w/o a screen protector since I got it and no scratches here.
Having said all of that; I've had the same Infuse since mid-2011 and it is basically my development phone, so it gets soft bricked several times a week lol and it is still running smooth...
If you ever do get an LTE phone, you can pick up an LTE sim for free from att store (although the one in he infuse is actually the same as the LTE sims...trust me I'm using my infuse sim on LTE)
You will need to have hem switch you over to the LTE towers or whatever though which is also free and doesn't effect your plan/bill... I just called them and told them I bought a used vivid and needed to enable lte...they did it free of charge....

Haha...it may be a little work, but once you expiernce the speeds of LTE it will be worth it...I get 23mb down and like 10mb up on LTE...only problem is that I'm on the smallest data plan so I can't fully enjoy it :/

I bought my Galaxy Nexus when verizon was doing double to data, so I have smallest data plan... just doubled to 4GB
neither the galaxy nexus or infuse have lte support so going on about lte isnt helping anything.

You. Out of the pool. Lol
Wrong chief, the Toro (Verizon) and Toroplus (Sprint) versions of the Galaxy Nexus BOTH have LTE support. Now, the Maguro (GSM) version of the Galaxy Nexus does not have LTE. (Which is the version that would work on AT&T)

I debated for a second if I should put "gsm galaxy nexus" but I thought no one would be stupid enough to argue the cdma versions had lte since that had nothing to do with att and the $350 galaxy nexus from the play store in question. But alas, I was proven wrong and will be careful of my wording around people like you.

Wonderful idea! Your earlier post wasn't necessary, so I returned the favor.
The majority of the people here are well aware the Infuse and GSM GNex don't have LTE, see where I am going with this?
Have a good one!

Considering GSIII

So my contract is up in 2 days i am considering picking up the GSIII or the Droid DNA or maybe a long shot the Note II. So is the GSIII a thing of the past already or will it stay in the higher ranks of smart phones for the next year or so?

The gs3 is still a high end phone and it will continue to be for some time. Like all tech, the clock is running on it though.
Honestly android phones are reaching a point where you are going to be satisfied with the ux regardless of which phone you choose (except for the really low end.) You don't really say what is most important to you so you will need to weigh the urrent and upcoming phones. For example, the development community or if you think the touchwiz user enhancements give the gs3 a leg up. It comes down to your preferences...

Will you have to give up unlimited data to upgrade? If so I would say pass and look for a used phone. Otherwise I'm not sure. I'm really happy with my s3 and would buy it again if that helps.

I would say get the Note II as its better spec'd but i just cant get over that home button branding so i would say S3 unless you wanna wait another month or so for the Droid DNA.
I hate my phone lol
I cant wait till I get the next HTC phone ..
Lol mine will be on craigs as soon as DNA comes out
Signal issues, gps lock is no where near accurate as fast as the rezound, 4g drops , 3g drops , -107 dbm at best where my rezound would get -87 dbm , sim card issues , touch wiz no bluetooth while aux in unless custom rom , hard press home button , dual core for a phone that is quad core every where else but verizon , screen and camera mediocre at best when compared with HTC rezound , wait till DNA and it will crush GS3 flat camera and screen wise
And dude, lose unlimited data ???? I would sell my last pair of underwear and not lose unlimited .
PS burned through 3 s3 replacements
It is sad but Unlimited will go i had a droid bionic but dropped it of my car and i stopped charging so i been stuck with an i*hone for about 3 months :crying:
so buy full price

Get a used craigs list phone until u save for full price and keep unlimited , remember , you can keep unlimited if you buy full price
That HTC looks pretty nice, if you don't mind the HTC Sense.
The GS3 has a good developer backing though. I don't like Touchwhiz so I have a lot of options thanks to the huge backing.

The s3 is going to be around for awhile . The camera is amazing and the battery life is good too . Not many on the market compete with it .

I went from HTC to the S3 and I'm loving it. Of course, doesn't take much to outdo the Thunderbolt...
I came from the Rezound to the S3 and I love it. Reception ain't as bad as I expected.. But that Dna....
Looks like it'll be hot. Honestly if the Dna gets unlocked and gets source.. I'll probably try and get it. Unless it really doesn't have expandable storage.

It's an absolutely amazing phone, it's hard to see with it's popularity and specs that it will be considered old news for some time. It's arguably the best Android phone yet made, and not everything that comes after is going to be as good, we sure know that.
I used the Note 2 for a couple weeks trying to decide whether to switch and I'm still not sure. In some ways it made me appreciate the S3 even more. It comes down to how large you want your phone to be. How much development interests you. Besides that you can't go wrong with either.
Just putting in my 2c.
I bought the S3 as an upgrade from S2 and if I'm honest I was totally disappointed.
It's much slower than my S2, especially opening contacts and sms.
Granted the screen is nicer but that's all it has going for it in my opinion. I wish I'd saved my cash and got the i9305 or just wait for the Note 2. 1gb of RAM is not enough for this phone in my opinion and it lags like crazy.

Personally this is the best phone I've ever had. I love the touchwiz interface. There's always going to be something better out tomorrow no matter what phone you get. I really wanted a tegra 3 phone but gave up on waiting and got the gs3. I'm really satisfied with the smoothness of this phone. I've tried different Roms but I've gone back to stock touchwiz because I love it so much. I like it but that doesn't mean it'll be your preference.

The S3 has 1.63gb of usable ram. Slow? Is that a serious complaint? Install a custom rom or a new kernel and overclock it up to 2.1ghz if you desire. install nova launcher. You should see some gains right there. Either your phone is defective or you aren't customizing it to its potential. This phone is leaps and bounds faster and is all around a better phone than anything else on the market right now.

The S3 is not slower than the S2. I don't believe it. Sorry.
Came from HTC rezound to s3 I like the phone except touchwiz and the antennas are very poor compared to my rezound

My vote is foe the DNA. Im going to figure out a way to get rid of this low signal beast. As much as i love this thing the data drops and low signal compared to my other 3 htc devices in my area is crazy.
