Modem problems! - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

It doesn't matter if I'm on the la4 or la5 modem they don't make much difference as u can see below top 3 tests are on la5 but both of them keep giving me a "out of service" message in about phone see pic.
When it goes out of service I cant send messages I have to reboot and they finally send
Also I'm running superlite 5.0

has any1 tried the UCLA3 silver modem on ICS?

Dont think Ive seen any posts about it, but that modem was really good i miss it, i notice the slower speeds with this ICS modem.

LeeC released a version of the UCLA3 that worked for me on ICS. I used it for about a week before I flashed the Note modem. My experience was that the UCLA3 modem (LeeC's) worked as well as the GB version (Silver's) did while on GB. I have not tried Silver's version with ICS. I'm not sure if it has more files than LeeC's version or not. It showed "Unknown" under the baseband when I flashed LeeC's UCLA3 modem but it worked perfectly. LeeC posted that he confirmed that it was indeed the UCLA3 files that were flashed when he tried it. Here is the thread that explains it a bit more..see post #30 and beyond:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1567213&page=3
For me, the UCLA3 modem and ICS Note modem work about the same but the Note modem shows up under the baseband.
Let us know if you can get Silver's UCLA3 REX modem version working on ICS or if you know anyone that tried it.

well i saw the UCLA5 modem cwr zip, and i think its missing /system/lib files other modems uses
now maybe the NOTEs lib files are the same as the ICS leak we have, i dont know im looking now, i downloaded the NOTE rom 2 days ago, but been afk
---------- Post added at 12:36 AM ---------- Previous post was at 12:27 AM ----------
see what i see.. there all different sizes
so the new modem is using a newer LIB one thats larger than ours.
UCLA5 modem + those libs might be the key to better modem
If you want to try copy these to your /system/lib + flash UCLA5 modem

Its strange because some (like myself) have used the Notes ICS modem (UCLA5?) without a problem, but others are having all kinds of trouble with it. I guess its like everything else ICS...just the luck of the flash. I think I read about someone on Rogers not having data after flashing LeeC's UCLA3 version, but most (including myself) haven't had any trouble out of it (other than the "unknown" baseband). But maybe that's because I have the AT&T Skyrocket and not Rogers. But data, connectivity, and LTE all work good for me with the Note ICS modem and LeeC's UCLA3 modem.

might get better performance.. because these libs are what connects modem > kernel
The one file is pretty big compared to the old one.. really big compared to gingerbreads version
let me know if you or someone is daring to try it.
It might be the magic modem.

UCLA5 (Note modem) is already working great for me on ICS so I can't really test it out. Maybe someone that is having trouble with the Note modem can try and see if it makes it work for them.
I am wondering if there is a difference in the UCLA3 modem that LeeC released and Silver's REX UCLA3 modem?
Or maybe the UCLA3 lib files can be placed into the UCALC4 modem (or whatever shipped with the Skyrocket ICS leak) and make the UCALC4 modem work as well as the UCLA3 modem did? The general consensus is that the ICS modem (UCALC4) modem has higher speeds, but the UCLA3 modem had way better connectivity (for me anyway) so maybe combining the 2 modems can make on e that has the best of both worlds.
**EDIT**
I checked,
**LeeC's UCLA3 ICS modem doesn't have any lib files and works well with ICS for me. Comparable to how The UCLA3 REX modem worked for me on GB but LeeC's modem showed an "Unknown" baseband with ICS (no big deal).
**Silver's REX UCLA3 GB modem has the lib files and worked well for me on GB ROMS with a slightly lower LTE speed than the UCALC4 modem (but still good). I have not tested this modem on ICS.
**The UCALC4 ICS modem has lib files that are MUCH larger than the lib files in the UCLA3 REX GB modem and worked for me with ICS but had poor connectivity (especially with LTE).
**You already posted the lib files for the ICS Note (UCLA5) modem. The lib files are larger than the UCLA3 REX GB modem. It works fine for me, comparable to how LEEC's UCLA3 ICS modem worked.
I'm just a bit afraid to start mixing and matching because I'm not sure exactly what I am doing (LOL).
**another edit**
I can confirm that the UCLA5 note radio I am currently using does not have the lib files included (as you mentioned).
Not just the UCLA5 (Note) radio has a larger lib file than the UCLA3 (Silver's REX) radio, but the UCLAC4 radio (skyrocket ICS leak) has a larger lib file than the REX radio as well. Maybe taking the libs from UCLA3 and placing them in the UCALC4 modem could work?

I've tried the ucla3 modem and along with the unknown base band I had no service just the circle with the line thru it I'm on ucalc4 and works but does go in and out just have to reboot every once in a while. I'm getting used to it now lol

I think if you want to use Silver's UCLA3 modem you would have to take the lib files from it's .zip and put them into the UCALC4 modem .zip or the other way around. Or you could try the same thing with the Note's UCLA5 modem. Of course, it is untried as far as I know. I don't know enough about the workings of the "lib" files to know exactly what needs put where. I think LeeC's UCLA3 modem works because it doesn't include any lib files. I'm hoping one of the "radio" guys can try out the combinations and see if we can get a modem that works well for everyone (most people anyway).

testing leeC's modem now not far enough to know how well its going. is anyone having problems with it?

update: still getting the "out of service" in about phone just like op pic but speeds seem better when connected will keep playing with it

[Radio] Stock Bell note radio I717MUGLA2 - can be used on I727 & Rogers

Mainly for Canadians.
If you want to use it on I727R with ICS Rom. please ONLY flash the base file (no RIL).
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/4333782/Bell_Note_Base.zip
If you want to try it on different gingerbread flavors, you can flash the one with RIL. DO NOT flash this one on ICS, otherwise you will not get signal.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/4333782/Bell_Note_Base_RIL.zip
After you flash the radio file, ICS may not identify the baseband properly(from About Phone). On GB TPC v3 can detect the baseband properly though.

I flashed the Rogers no RIL, works great, better bars, however how damaging it to have unknown baseband?
not damaging at all, the rom will merely identify baseband as "unknown," as u said.
Im curious to know how much better this modem performa compared to the UCALC4. I had problems flashing it before, but once i got it to stick performance has been great, receptions is better and speed on par with UCLA3. Can other rogers users with LTE weigh in on this? Preferably those in the GTA and Vancouver.
does the resolve the unknown caller issue
Hey gey just here to give my feedback about this modem. (I live in GTA)
Personally, I've experienced slower data speeds and bars of reception with this modem as compared to the UCALC4 modem.
On this modem (no ril) I acquired about 20 mbps down and 8 up where as with the UCALC4 modem, I experienced about 26 mbps and 13 up.
Also, with the no ril modem, I was receiving 3 bars while on the UCALC4, I was receiving 4 bars.
maybe because it is a bell modem and rogers will release their own?
I made this for some users can try to use Bell's dual channel HSPA+ as y2whisper advised. For LTE it may not as good as rogers or UCLA4.

but to be honest im running 4g which is another 3g+ and i didn't see any difference but my battery was going upside down lol..as far as ucalc4 once it settles, its wayy better then then RUKJ7 that we have with rogers..
for me its helpful since i am using the device on bell. and well i don't have the same coverage with bell as you do with rogers for LTE. so figured why not get the best hspa+ speeds as i can get.

I tried UCLA3 on ICS yesterday because I can't get LTE on UCALC4. Anyway, it doesn't work. It gives no signal and under 'about phone' it says unknown baseband.
did u try the ics specific one leeC posted?
My mistake, I didn't flash the ICS specific UCLA3. Didn't know of it. Flashed the GB one (no signal) -then flashed back to UCALC4 radio. Ill try ICS UCLA3 soon (it would sure help if someone could post the link so I know for sure)
UCALC4 doesn't seem to be working too well for me. I get LTE very rarely for few seconds at a time only, but mostly not. I always had LTE before though.
I see this Bell Radio works on Rogers i727R. I have not tried it yet myself. I am on TCP v3 still, and looking to try a ICS rom with a new radio, but I am trying to find the Rogers radio in case I want to revert to gb ? Any thoughts ? this is the only radio post i see in the thread, thanks

Latest Cyanogenmod 9 with UCLF6 libs | Hosts file ad-blocking (7/14/12)

i compiled cm9 using the official ics UCLF6 files. cm9 is using the UCLE2 files still. Im not sure exactly what differences it will make but they are updated libs and if you are anything like me you want to have the latest and greatest. haha.
i will update the rom daily so it will act as a nightly sort of. i will continue to make these roms daily until cm9 pulls in the UCLF6 files.
I will compile these during the night after 7 or 8 oclock so you can have the changes that are going to be in the next cm9 nightly the night before its released. hehe. they usually put in the changes the night before and then make the rom with those changes the next day. this rom will have the changes before the official rom does.
if you want the latest modem flash this one first:
UCLF6 Modem w/ csc files: http://d-h.st/XYa (thanks seanzscreams)
Latest CM9 rom with UCLF6: HERE
Latest GAPPS: HERE
0.) flash UCLF6 modem (optional)
1.) mounts & storage >> format /system
2.) flash rom
3.) flash gapps
4.) mounts & storage >> format /cache
5.) reboot & enjoy
if you follow these instructions then you will still have your data from your previous cm9. which is always a plus.

some radios work better than other depending on your location etc.
My apartment has horrible signal. UCLE2 manages to get a bar whereas others do not.
I'm using the standard CM9 nightlies, but this build is intriguing. Is your build essentially a preview of what the nightlies will eventually merge in as well?

So the libs and the radio are 2 different things. The cm9 nightlies are being built with the ucle2 libs. They do not include any modem or radio. Libs and radios are interchangeable. You don't have to have the le2 radio with the le2 libs. I hope that makes sense

I dunno if its the modem or the lib files, (or maybe something in 7-10) but when I tether another device no data works on this one. When I turn tethering off, I get SMS and mms messages emails weather alerts.. everything that didn't want to come through with portable hotspot on. Browser doesnt work either if it's turned on. Didn't have this issue yesterday, was running 7-9 w f5 modem. Whatta ya think?
(And yes, I am throttled, but I was throttled yesterday as well. I crossed this months line a week and a half ago)
Edit: its not the new radio or the libs. Same thing on official 7-10 with the radio I was using yesterday. So its either 7-10 or I'm more throttled now than I was yesterday. Apologies for the false alarm.

hmmm im not sure. can you get a logcat? the only variable is the libs and modem. i know its alot of work but you can try flashing the stock UCLF6 rom that mohan just posted and see if it does the same thing there. if it does then we know its the libs for sure. i dont think it would be the modem. but you can also try just flashing a different modem on top of the rom you have now and see if that works.
edit: now that i think about it the easiest way to narrow down whether its the radio or libs is to do this.
- be on the rom that isnt working for you (cm9 w/uclf6 libs and uclf6 modem)
- flash a known working modem for you (ucle2, uclf3, etc.)
- see if it works
- if it doesnt work. flash a cm9 nightly with the ucle2 libs. see if that works.
- if it does work then flash the uclf6 modem on top of that and see if it works.
thats the easiest way to determine whether its the modem or the libs

NS4G modem patch on CM7/9/10 based roms, nightlies and previews- 2/12/13

Hi, I made this thread because people have been asking me what to do to make a ROM compatible with the Nexus S 4G modem and RIL, so I made a flashable zip so you can use the modem and RIL on any CM7 based ROM (like MIUI or JoyOS or whatever you fancy).
Note: If using a ROM not on this list, use the closest cm patch corresponding to the os and then download the phone and settings apks from the nexus s 4g Roms and either put them in the zip or push them. That way, roaming and update prl and profile will work.
I included the KL2 modem in each AIO zip. If you do not like it, or would like to try other modem files, try the flashable zips here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1077168

these should allow you to switch back and forth between the epic modem and nexus modem.
what it does :
installs blobs related to the modem
edits build.prop lines to match the modem
-should- work with all current versions (2.3 through 4.2.2)
-should- work with all roms that support switching modems (aokp, cm, pa, pac, baked, hellybean, etc...)
what it doesn't do :
it does not install or change the actual modem itself.
it does not install or change the kernel.
it does not backup anything.
it does not replace any apks.
it does not perform any tweaks or extras of that sort.
it does not fix issues in the system ie if 4g isn't working in the kernel this installer won't magically fix it or inversely break it if it works.
so that means you will need to install the modem itself (through zip or the MORE RECOMMENDED METHOD OF ODIN)
and that you will need to make sure you are on a proper kernel that supports your modem of choice.
Ex... on stock aokp4.2.2 (which is epic modem by default) to switch to the nexus modem you would flash kernel of choice for nexus modem (didhiy/mine), then modem with recovery or odin, then flash swap2nexusmdm.zip
Ex2... on ck10.1 (which is nexus modem by default) to switch to the epic modem you would flash modem of choice with Odin or recovery, then any kernel that supports epic modem and then flash swap2epicmdm.zip
Note: These instructions are a bit different than effsi's as the order of flashing does matter when on an epic modem ROM and kernel as the modem flash is dependent on kernel drivers that are not present in epic modem kernels.

Any Nexus S 4G modem can be used but the one included is supposedly best. Try any other one and let me know if it works better
My kernel sources are at https://github.com/xboxfanj/android_kernel_samsung_victory in the gingerbread branch so if you want to make a kernel based on that or cherrypick the patches in my kernel into another kernel, you are welcome to.
Use my commits and bbelos' commits at https://github.com/nexussense4g/android_device_samsung_epicmtd in the crespo-modem branch to get GPS and modem working on any ROM.
Thank you to didhiy for adapting the patches that bbelos and I made. For support for Update PRL and Profile, you need to copy some of the overlays from the Nexus S 4G device sources.
Thank you to bbelos, coolya, the CM SGS team, CM Nexus S team, AOSP, Samsung, Google, and me for making this patch.
Custom CM9 Kernels (note these are not all in one zips, so if you choose to flash these, you must also flash the AIO if you haven't already, and each time you upgrade builds, you'll need to flash the aio and the custom kernel if you still want it):
Nyan:
http://marcusant.com/android/epic/nyan_CM9-CrpMdm.zip
Shadow: http://marcusant.com/android/epic/Shadow_CM9-CrpMdm.zip
Anyone is welcome to include this patch in their rom, just as long as you give all the contributors credit.
And also, if someone wants to make this for cm9, that'd be awesome. Use bbelos's crespo-modem branch in his device repo and use his crespo-modem branch in his vendor repo.
Then use my kernel patches at my github and make a full cm9 build and if it works, release that build and release a patch like mine with kernel, and ril bins, libs, and etc files, and build.prop and everything outside system like the mtd scripts and modify updaterscript so it works, or just use my metain folder

I'll try to fix it tomorrow on my free time, maybe with try find some commands to erase previous blob which unreplaceable with the patch like lib sec ril 40.so (or similar) and build.prop must be edited from the previous rom with changes on several lines.

Edit: and any CM7 ROM should be fine with CM7 build.prop AFAIK. It may not identify 100% correctly in settings>about phone, but good enough. TBH, I don't care if it says CM7 in settings while I run MIUI.

Weird not sure what I could've done that would've broken root. Does anyone else have this problem?

Not sure if it makes a difference but I flashed the modem through odin first then the patch. I'm on the newest cm7 nightly.

I downloaded the newest one (not test yet) & think that this command
Code:
set_perm_recursive(0, 0, 0755, 0644, "/system");
will messed up the su permission that cause root access denied

OK, I will just not change the permissions in any folder I haven't modified. Probably some of the xbin and bin stuff is at fault too.
Thank you didhiy for looking at my updaterscripts and pointing out what to fix.

What changes are needed in build.prop, if I was to try this on CM10?

change libsecril-40 to libsec-ril, delete all the samsungril or samsungcdma or epicril stuff. Remember, you will need a fresh new kernel, with the modem patch.

Sorry if I'm asking too much, but can you get a stock+backlight fixed version of the patch up and running? I'm sure others would like a Shadow version, too. Nyan never seemed to agree with me.
Is it stable? Copy the last two commits here to fix GPS and modem stability: https://github.com/NexusSense4G/android_device_samsung_epicmtd/commits/crespo-modem
Also, add gpsd from my CrespoModem CM7 ROM to vendor/samsung/epicmtd/vendor/bin to fix GPS.
Let me know after you apply these patches if modem works every boot (on some old ICS builds using this, modem didn't work every boot, so reboot at least 20 times and make sure the signal bars are there, not X'ed out). If so, go ahead and release, just give me and bbelos a shout out. If you want, create your own thread for it. If not, you can certainly use the CM10 Kang thread. Also, make a patch zip like mine here if you don't mind and I can post that here, or you can make your own thread.
added some of the xbin permissions stuff in here. Let me know if it fixed su. It's in the same link.

just post on the OP if this tested working to other guys

Stupid noob APN question. Help please.

OK I'm on cm9 and I'm having different call quality than I had on stock. Now I made sure to save all my APN info from stock. Cm9 APN is a lil different. If I entered in my APN's from stock into the cm9 section will it help? And another noob question. I downloaded uclf5 radio from mohans thread. Is it safe to flash different radios on different roms? Thanks guys bare with me please .
Sent from my S2 Skyrocket
Apn settings have no bearing on call quality, that's all radio.
In all honesty, uclf5 sux, use either uclf6 or ucla3 with ril mod for ics/jb. U may also try ucle2 if those first two don't work
Okay. I will try it. And I can use mohans radios? And also I'm guessing those are old radios. Will they work with lte?

[Q] 727r rom / kernel / modem combo for WIND

I have a 727r and I want to use it on wind, and have no idea what combo of rom / kernal / modem to use. what I do know:
The 727r radio has the ability to pick up the signal
The wind network uses HSPA+ - transmit on 1700, receive on 2100
There are modem files out there for these frequencies
Things I don't know
How to make sure a rom / kernel / radio will work with each other (hopefully without needing to spend hours flashing n! combinations)
How to figure out if a modem file will support my device, or the frequencies I need
Things I've tried
the 989 from Tmobile runs on HSPA+, so I tried installing a tmobo rom, kernel, and radio with little success.
Trying to install / flash different rom - kernel - modem combos (most of which results in baseband version:unknown - this means the modem and rom are incompatible right?)
What I'm asking
Is there anyone running a 727r on wind that wouldn't mind sharing their rom / kernel / modem combo?
Has anyone found a Cyanogen-kernel-modem combo that works?
I am NOT asking which is the "best". After spending 4 hours of flashing and praying things will work, I don't care if I get the "worst" rom. I just want a combo that works
WORKING(more or less) COMBOS:
R34P3ReX_T989_Skyrocket_Conversion - Juggernaut_50_0218 - Tmo_SGH-T989_KID_radio
Gingerbread base, gyroscope tilts screen wrong way, a bit buggy, but works
CM10, CM10, T989UVLH1
Works well enough, having Call issues though. Going to try a new radio
Cyanogen always gets terrible battery. Going to look for an optimized version but not a problem for me
CM10, Blaze 4G UVLH5
Calling worked, I could hear caller, but they heard a lot of garbled blarky. Not good
u don't need a specific ROM or kernel at all, all u need to do is try different t radios. try the uvle1 from the t989 aka Hercules subsection, and give the modem someone dumped from the i757m bell version to see if u can catch a signal. I strongly believe the later will work

So.. im using the Tmo Radio.. the latests and you can get it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1895400
and as for the ROM i am using Cyanogenmod 10.0 but the T989 version.
works good.. dont forget to wipe everything.. as for the other comment where you just need to flash the radio.. dunno.. i tried that a couple of times and it didnt work.. however.. im about to try it again.. so ill let you know how it goes.. for now though.. just to get it working.. i would do the above..
tip: i initially flashed the UVLH1 radio.. worked great.. great signal.. then i updated the other day to the latest.. and it seems as though my signal is not as strong.. dunno.. but try it out.. you never know..
also.. on initial boot up.. you need to give it a couple of minutes for things to settle.. it should pick up the Wind signal by itself... if it doesnt after 5 mins.. then do a search.. but you shouldnt have a problem..
So.. i can confirm that you CAN install the TMO radio and the ATT Skyrocket CM 10 ROM!!!!!
Infact... it works great!!!
TIP: i can also confirm that the UVLH1 has a stronger signal than the UVLI4 radio which is the latest. not sure why.. but i reverted back to UVLH1
hope this helps!

I have been running SkyJB 4.1.2, and Blaze LB7 in Southern Ontario, picking up Wind signals. Speeds are okay, still trying to find the best combo, but that combo works.

I tried to install the T989 (Hercules) CM10 version but it kept failing to install
The recovery I'm using is Team Win Recovery, if that matters. I suspect either TWRP is not working or the Kernel is incompatible
What Kernel are you using?

if it was built for t989 specific phones it wont install because of the assert
u dont need a t989 rom anyways, but if you want to try them out make sure the updater script doesnt have the assert function and do the rotation fix
I'm using the i727r (Rogers) running CM 10.1. I'm still on Rogers using the stock radio for now. Is there any consensus as to which radio file to flash for best results?
I know this thread is a little stale, but I figured I would throw in my two cents.
I have an i727r, unlocked. Right now I am running PACman Rom (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2178402) with the Blaze LB7 radio (4th from the bottom here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1895400). They said I shouldn't be able to run an ICS radio with a JB Rom, but somehow it seems to be working. Note that the radio was on there before flashing PACman.
The kernel showing up in my phone info is the one that came with the PACman Rom, 3.0.72-cyanogenmod. I know this because before flashing PACman over stock, the kernel was 3.0.8.
Having said all that I'm thinking about updating my radio, probably to UVMB1. I'm not sure if I should bother though. I have a Nexus S, which is designed as an AWS phone out of the factory, and when I put my SIM card in that phone, the speedtest results are the same as what I'm getting right now with the LB7 radio on the Skyrocket. So I'm not sure I'd gain much by updating. :/
Can some people in the GTA please chime in to help me.
I am using a Rogers Skyrocket.
SlimBean Rom 4.2.2 Official 7
T989UVMC6 radio/modem
I tried a few other modems and found this one to be the most stable as some did not even allow a call to be made.
This is what I noticed.
Full charge I talked for 20 minutes and lost 10% battery (from full charge)
I get erratic data speeds inside=500-1 and outside I get 3
The problem is the battery drain and signal strength.
What are you using and what is your battery life and signal strength?
Data speeds?
your location?

My carrier is videotron, one of the most difficult carriers to get unlocked phones to work on. Here's what works for me, sim unlocked, rooted. Running cyanogenmod 10.1.0 RC2 with Blaze 4G LF4 radio, nobars battery saver and network booster. I'm still have the same issue as everyone else, baseband unknown and network type unknown. I've been running the stock kernel and I've been running like this for the past couple days, and touch wood, I haven't had any issues. I've tried the 2 Tmo radios, I got no signal what-so-ever, the telus radio kept dropping my connection, meaning, I would have to try and resend text messages several times before it would actually send. Now that I'm using my current setup, as described at the beginning of my post, no problems to date.
I hope my input helps out.

Edited, UVMB1, the NEW Blaze 4G radio from this thread seems to work as well:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1895400
But like x said, u had issues u just weren't aware of them. Problems don't just APPEAR for no reason.
this threads getting confusing.
ucmc1 and uxuma7 is for rogers and att users on cm10.1
if using unlocked skyrocket for other carriers then you would need compatible jb radio for the new/unlocked carrier for cm10.1 based roms
so for tmo/wind etc you would need UVMB1 for the AWS bands, there are other jb radios for telus, bell but don't know if/how well they work on said carrier.
so if your carrier uses the same frequency's as tmo then UVMB1 seems to be what users are reporting success with.
if your carrier is using same frequency as att/rogers then the ucmc1 or uxuma7 radio is what you need
correct me if im wrong
^^^ this is exactly what I said except in a more detailed explanation .
