[Q] Is it possible to upgrade OTA ICS through Clockwork Recovery - HTC Sensation

So basically I bought my Sensation XE off eBay. I had NO idea my phone had S-off until literally 5 mins ago, I bought the phone a couple months ago.
Looking into my phone, this is what I have (keep in mind I have next to no knowledge about flashing and rooting pretty much anything to do with android modification, I used an HD2 before so I am familiar with winmo stuff) :
Android version 2.3.4
Build Number 1.73.401.4 cl161971 release-keys
When I do vol - and power I get this:
-Revolutionary-
PYRAMID PVT SHIP S-OFF RL
HBOOT-1.17.1111
RADIO-10.14.9035.02_2
eMMC-boot
Jun 2 2011
Recovery takes me to ClockworkMod Recovery v5.0.2.0
I have been looking around the forum and many reponses say that the reason I cannot update to ICS is because I have CWM.
Now I don't particularly want to get into flashing stock ROMs unless I have to, is there any way to just update it through CWM? I have already downloaded it through the software notification on my phone, and its on my SD card.
EDIT: after a bit more playing around I have noticed in CWM recovery there is an option to update from update.zip, can I just rename the OTA ICS to update.zip and do that?

as i my knowledge you have to flash the 3.32.xxxx firmware inorder to run ics rom. if not your phone will stuck at bootscreen

Ok looking around the forum, to flash a new firmware you just have to put the file in the root of the SD card, go to bootloader, and do the fastreboot and it will update right?

You just have to install the Stock Recovery back then the OTA will be fine. I use this guide to get the stock back [GUIDE] Get Stock Recovery/Install OTA Updates without losing data.

search for "android recovery manager" in the entire of xda, you will get the answer

Follow the guide two posts up. You need a PG58IMG for the stock recovery to stick on the root of your scared, reboot into bootloader (power/volume down), and it will prompt you from there.
Also, make sure you have all stock apps installed. Otherwise you'll need an RUU to return to full stock.

I just use the "Android Recovery Manager" which is on the guide link above. I don't think you will need the "PG58IMG" file. Just follow the "(a)" guide except that you device on the list so you have to use "(b)" guide. But first make sure you do a backup esspecially nandroid backup.

Thank you to everyone who has replied in this thread, I followed Post 4 and managed to update successfully =]

[Q] How can i uninstall revolutionary?

Hey,
i can't access dev forum so i posted it here.
I have new Sensation with all updates. today i have installed Revolutionary and only this. Now i want back to original state of my phone, and get my warranty back, what can i do?
This is info about my phone:
Kernel:
2.6.35.13-g3422292
[email protected] #1
SMP PREEMPT Mon Aug 1 15:03:50 CST 2011
Radio
10.56.9035.00U_10.14.9035.01_M
Compilation
1.45.401.2 CL125597 release-keys
I want back to EXACTLY the same state of my phone that i have before installing revolutionary. Is that possible? Without loss of settings and data?
Read the S-OFF guide as the end of it is going back to S-ON

Be careful with that unlockr thing.
Mine won't work correctly now D:
U should have saved a backup of original os before wiping and flashing. Restore back to that then follow S-on instructions.
If u didnt save a backup, in the same thread S-on is in u can find original Pyramid downloads.
If you don't want to try theunlockr.com method take a look at this thread

I also would like to ask:
If I made a nandroid backup of original ROM according to S-OFF guide and anytime I´ll revert it back, will be the phone in the original state? It means without CWM and root? (except s-on)? Thank you.

Im not 100% sure but i dont think just using nandroid will remove S-off and the CWM. one thing id say is be really careful, ive tried to go back to S-on following the bottom bit of the S-off guide and bricked it after writing the secure flag command. still not sure what i did wrong...

You are probably trying to preserve you stock rom for backup before any flash-fest.
If this is the case then I am in the same boat. And the main reason for me is that there is no RUU available on the net for my Sensation. Which is the main obstacle when someone sends you to "go read S-OFF guide, S-ON section".
As far as I know you cannot uninstall Revolutionary.
If I am not mistaken it performs two things:
1) overwrites stock HBOOT with hacked HBOOT;
2) overwrites stock recovery with ClockWorkMod recovery.
So, besides that the rest of the system is intact (radio, system) as far as you've not installed root.
As a conclusion you cannot uninstall Revolutionary, you have to flash stock recovery and hboot back.
Everyone on the forum points a finger to RUU direction. But if you do not have RUU BUT have original stock recovery and hboot, theoretically you could flash stock recovery and stock hboot either using fastboot or manipulations with PG58IMG.zip file.
Unfortunately, I have not found the comprehensive and safe guide for these operations. And no-one on this forum wants to give a competent response to that
My first sensations wifi died on me so I took a chance and followed the direction on the thread I posted for you and it worked revolutionary was taken out stock recovery was installed and I was urooted you have to make sure you install the right RUU for your phone

So... i installed RUU again, then write secureflag 3, everything is working very fine now... i have warranty back?
I dont save copy, i get RUU from topic with RUU's ( i taken: RUU_Pyramid_HTC_Europe_1.45.401.2_Radio_10.56.9035 .00U_10.14.9035.01_M_release_208857_signed)
is everything OK? My phone is working, but i don't know if i doed all things...
flashed RUU, writen secureflag, and that's it.
Sorry for my english

It because you've tried to flash a GB RUU with ICS firmware.
You need to go find the 1.17 firmware package from Mikes thread, install that then run the older RUU. This will return you to stock and remove your root. S-OFF should remain untouched.

I was happy t see your post but unfortunatly i have xp pc and that solution works only on win 7.
Any other way ??
If you place the 1.17 firmware on to the root of your SD then boot into boot loader the update will start automatically, power off, remove the 1.17.zip from the sd, then flash any of the GB roms.
Once you have a booting rom again, just plug the phone in via USB and run the chosen RUU. The RUU will replace everything bar your s-off. It will install the stock recovery, radio, rom etc.
Make sure you have all the correct drivers installed, if your unsure still there are numerous guides in the dev forum.

But still stuck with htc logo.Got this rom from mediafire coz all links are dead megaupload.
I am noob.
try flashing any of the custom GB roms first (android revolution for example) before you run the RUU.
You need a booting rom before you flash the RUU. Remember to flash the superwipe.zip before flashing android revolution.
Hope you get some joy.

[Q] XE stock rom S-off Rooted CWM, OTA ICS upgrade

Hi,
unfortunately again the same kind of question but did not find a straight answer to it.
Can you help me ?
Many thanks in advance
What I want
I want to upgrade using the OTA ICS upgrade I just received on my phone.
But, it does not work. Starting the installation, the phone reboot then stay stuck on a picture with warning sign !
I want to upgrade from the OTA file as I don't want to re-install and configure all the phone again !
How-to ??
Shall I try to un-root and uninstall CWM ? How?
Or, simply install the received OTA upgrade file from CWM option update from SD file ?
Or, something different ? Which steps to follow
Or, the only solution is to reinstall full stock rom ?? worst case !
Situation:
unbranded Sensation XE
stock rom 2.3.4, Sense 3.0. Software version 1.73.401.4
Revolutionary S-Off, Root and CWM using XDA tutorial http://cleanimport.xda/index.php?threads/1192300/
Accessing the boot (Switch On button + volume down), this brings the following:
-Revolutionary
Pyramid PVT SHIP S-OFF RL
HBOOT-1.17.1111
Radio-10.14.9035.02-2
eMM-boot
The phone has been rooted and I installed ClockWorkMod CWM 5.0.0.8
The OTA file I received is OTA_PYRAMID_LE_ICS_35_S_HTC_Europe_3.32.401.105_R-1.73.401.4_release251962...zip
Unroot using the Gingerbread RUU. Then flash the original HBOOT through ADB. At this point, on your phone, check for updates or install the ICS RUU. If that doesn't work , extract the ROM.zip from the RUU.

Hi usaff22,
thanks for the fast and straight answer...
Correct my if I'm wrong, but applying the Gingerbread RUU will reinstall the complete ROM.
Doing this, the telephone will be completely refreshed. All config/apps/data will be gone isn't it ?
This was precisely what I was trying to avoid.
If there is no other solution, then that's life. Cryinggggg....

[Q] I think I may have bricked my Sensation

Hello I am a noob and I need help please.
On Tuesday I rooted my HTC XE Sensation after finding a way to root and unlock it. Well after I did all of that I went to add the custom CoinDroid rom onto my phone and now my phone will not do anything. I removed the file from my sd card and re-added everything I did to root & unlock the phone and now it just stays at the HTC logo white screen.
I am able to get on the bootloader and I have used recovery on my phone every time with CWM. And nothing happens. Is my phone bricked? If not is there a way to get my phone to work?
On the bootload screen it reads:

Ok will I be able to add 4Ext on to my phone my placing my sd card into a sd card reader and how do I flash the GB Rom?
Well you won't be able to use 4ext until you can download it off the market.
Find a nice Gingerbread ROM off development, or you can try ARHD sense 3.5 ROM. Don't try to usr 3.6 because you probably don't have proper firmware. Download the 3.5 ROM, put it on the root of your SD card. Boot into recovery, superwipe everything and then flash the ARHD ROM. Make sure you check md5 sum.
Sent from my Sensation 4G using XDA
I just saw that you have S-On. I think another problem is that you have S-on. There are a couple guides in development that guide you through the process. Obtain S-off, super CID, then try to flash again. You can do all that through ADB. Imma head to sleep now, will help you tomorrow if you still need help.

I'm lost
Alright so here we go:
Step 1: Go to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1192300. This is the thread for S-Off. Do that first. This might solve your problem. After you have S-Off do the next step.
Step 2: Go to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1460801 and download the ROM. You don't have to stick with this ROM. It's just to check if it works. Make sure you put the downloaded ROM into the ROOT of your SD card. Don't put it in any folder.
Step 3: Put your SD card back into your phone and reboot to recovery(CWM). Wipe Data, Cache, Dalvik-Chache.) Once you've done that, flash the ROM. After flashing, reboot your phone and it should reboot. First boot takes a while. If it seems to bootloop, try to flash one more time. If it still bootloops, All I can tell you to do is either try and unroot it and set it like factory or try to upgrade your Frimware.
(If your phone did boot up correctly)
Step 4: Go to the market and download 4EXT. Follow the directions to have your recovery changed.
Step 5: I am assuimging you have changed your CID to 11111111. If not, go to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1192300 and follow the directions on how to change your CID.
Step 6: Most ROMS now adays will require the new firmware. To do that, go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1412618. Follow the directions on how to change your firmware. Read the directions are fully, doing this wrong could make your phone useless. After your firmware is changed, go on development and download a ROM you might like. Read through and make sure the firmware that ROM requires is the firmware that you have.
That Should worlk. Good luck.

[Q] Is my device bricked or what?

I know there are probably other threads that can help me but I'm really desperate here. I just got my Sensation 4G (T-Mobile) a few days ago and decided to root it and install a custom ROM. This is my first Android device so I followed a newb guide specifically for the Sensation 4G. However, I think I accidentally missed the step describing how to S-Off and I ended up trying to install Cyanogen Mod 9. It installed ok but I got stuck at the boot screen. From there, I tried restoring to a backup I made before installing Cyanogen but it didn't work. Now I'm stuck at the HTC logo. Can anyone help me out? Here are some more details about my device:
*** UNLOCKED ***
PYRAMID PVT SHIP S-ON RL

Jan 13 2012, 17:33:34
I think my firmware is 3.32 and the Android version was 4.0.3 although I guess there's nothing on it now.
EDIT: The latest guide I followed shows how to install/flash the stock ICS firmware but I couldn't update the firmware. It says "Parsing .zip" but doesn't go further than that.

I don't have 4ext recovery installed, only CWM. Is there a way to install it even though I can't boot into the phone?
Yeah, just have to flash another recovery (4ext) through fastboot.
If you look around the development section, you'd probably find a guide how to do it, if not PM me, and I'll give you the steps.
Have a look in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1631861 Asskicker's guide, how to flash roms with S-ON. If you don't want to flash the 4ext recovery (I highly recommend to install it!) then you can do Step "EXTRA 1" from that guide and install "boot.img" from the downloaded rom. You find it in the zip file, in the kernel folder. But read the guide, there are plenty of very useful info in it! And to answer your question, No! Your phone is not bricked!

I have a bunch of ROMS that I've tried and they're all on my desktop. Only two of them have a kernels folder, so I guess the other two are using a stock kernel and I can't use them, right? I'll try following that thread you linked me to, hopefully it'll work this time.
EDIT: It worked! Thank you so much! Now if I wanted to install Cyanogen Mod 9 for example, which doesn't have that kernels folder, I would need to S-OFF first right?
If you want to install ROM's without being S-OFF I'm pretty sure you need 4EXT.
And for future reference to all who may find this thread down the road, if you can get into your Recovery (any recovery) your phone is almost certainly not bricked. You may have a lot of fixing to do, but it's almost certainly fixable.
When the splash screen doesn't even come up after hitting the power button or the charing light doesn't come on when plugged in...that's when it's time to worry. (And even then you may have options)

I did the wire-trick to S-OFF my device. WHen I first did that, my only option in the bootloader was RUU and I was about to ask you about that but took my battery out first. Now it's back to normal and it shows S-OFF. However, my microSD card is now completely wiped. I have a backup on my computer, so should I just copy the files back on there and try another ROM so that my WiFi will work?

about wifi you can flash the boot.img manually(maybe you do not need that because you are S-OFF now)
otherwise flash your rom again
