I'm tired of having to take the case off and pry the battery cover off in order to yank the battery for a reboot! Is there anything else I can do when the phone locks up? Some sort of Ctrl + Alt + Del or anything? This tends to happen when messing with overclocking/undervolting.
I'd also like to know. Nexus One has the three-button salute (as it was affectionately called), which was power, volume down and trackball simultaneously. Does the Nexus S have a similar method?
with the screen on hold down the power button. Not sure that is what you were looking for. Its only a shutdown not a rebbot.
We're looking for something you can do even if the screen won't turn on or if the phone is frozen at some point. Not a standard shutdown/reboot with the power button.
There isn't another way, unfortunately. If it is frozen you have to do a battery pull.

if frozen, just a battery pull. if not, theres a reboot widget(that i used on my nexus one when the power button died and still use on the ns). if you have root, you can type reboot or reboot recovery in the terminal emulator app.
That's interesting...so only HTC handsets have a "secret" reboot key combination? Every one of their phones has a three key combination that reboots the phone, which is clutch when it's locked up or otherwise messed up. Shame Samsung didn't do something similar.

The HTC Evo had/has no such key combination to reboot while on.

The Epic had one as well. Shame the Nexus doesn't, but sometimes it can be more annoying then useful. I feel you though it's annoying to take the case off, but thats why I just dropped CM7 and went back to the stock ROM... no more freezes
HTC Dream had one as well (call, end call, and menu at once). The three finger salute
Phones with at least 3 hard keys can do that. If NS volume buttons were separate they'd probably include it in.

All One Series phones having been facing this problem of QHSUSB_DLOAD and it has been reported by many people that pressing Volume Up + Power instead of Volume Down + Power can be a deadly mistake...You have to send the phone to HTC and they will repair it but instead you could avoid this brick by being a tad bit careful and not pressing the Volume Up instead of Down...

He's saying to be careful when booting into HBOOT, because if you accidentally hold power and volume up instead of volume down, you are put into an unrecoverable state. +1 to mods to sticky this thread.

All HOX suffer from this issue?
I thought that was only for qualcomm phones ??
QHSUSB_DLOAD=Qualcomm HS-USB QDloader if i remember correctly. I read about it when there was a project on Sensation to fix bricked devices.
I can confirm that. I also did this a while ago and then my HOX (stock and locked) booted up for a second, and then it just turned off again.
I couldn't enter fastboot either because it also showed up for a second and turned off. The battery was charged to at least 80%. luckely they replaced it at the store.
If this is true what the hell is HTC playing at? I'm scared I'm going to do it now!
I guess you'd have to find a way to drain battery or open up and disconnect it

You are correct with this. I think he put this in the wrong One X forum now that I look at it. Cause the AT&T One X should have QHUSB mode, as should the One S and One V. We are special cause we have Tegra.

Yeah, I KNOW I have and my phone is fine. I just held the power button for 10 seconds and then turned it on normally. I can never remember if it's vol up or down. Now I just "adb reboot-bootloader".
Billy
So I take it this started in tegra forum? Any more info on this op? I have held vol up trying to get to hboot without brick. I have also bricked with that same error..different cause though.
here's the OP
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1729847
it's on a HTC One V which is a different chipset than the Snapdragon One XL.
The post in THIS forum is FUD and IMHO can be closed
On another note. If you hold power, vol up, and vol down at the same time. It will soft reset just like a battery pull.

I don't understand this thread.
about draining the battery, about going to hboot, resetting the power of phone,
which is bad, which is good.
I've done this quite a few times because in my case its hard to tell the volume buttons apart from one another (its really cheap & annoying) and I've never had it get "bricked"... maybe I'm just lucky? :/
So my brothers skyrocket died while he was talking on it last night. Now it won't power on just vibrates running stock rooted.any help would be appreciated

if you read the sticky [REF] |Read This b4 posting | THE MOST Common Questions Answered HERE you might of found your answer
24) Q. i tried "name of custom rom here" but a feature of the phone doesnt work , eg. camera
A. read the thread for the rom to see if the dev states any issues, read users feedback if they have/mention said feature not working, eg camera, if no, did it work when on stock or return to stock to see if said function/hardware works, if said function works on stock and users of rom states that it does work, then its usually user error, what error? idk, you need to troubleshoot.
32) Q. why does my phone bootloop every few seconds
A. could be a "sticky power button", read the next question and the info section in the 1STOP STICKY
33) Q. how do i test for a stuck "sticky" power button
A. TEST: remove then reinsert the battery and if the phone turns on by itself and then takes approx 10 sec's to turn off and then starts vibrating every couple of seconds then its for sure a power button problem, its stuck, goto the link in the previous answer for a possible fix

if any of the above didn't get results or fix the issue then it could be a hw failure
Except it's not bootlooping I did read this I wouldn't have asked the question if that was the problem. The screen doesn't come on at all just get a small vibration when holding the power button then nothing pull battery put back in push power same thing.

if the pulling battery test resulted in "turns on by itself and then takes approx 10 sec's to turn off and then starts vibrating every couple of seconds " then its a stuck button, bootloop/vibrating every couple of sec's are synonymous, but I will reword the sticky to state both
edit: the key thing you need to establish is if reinserting the battery restarts the phone w/out u touching the power button, if so then the button is stuck. if it didn't restart then return to stock and see if it corrected the issue( I guess that would be hard todo if the phone only restarts/vibrates every 2 seconds), if not then its some hw failure or could even be a battery prob
I reedited the sticky to be more concise on the issue and the testing for the stuck power button
No it doesn't boot by itself when reinserting the battery. Sorry I'm Utah and the phone is in Texas. computer doesn't recognize anything when plugging in either. Using logmein to watch his computer while he's doing this. I do appreciate the help

I figured as such that it might have something todo w/the battery, either it was flaky or not charged or cannot be charged which could also be with the charger and/or cable or bad battery contacts. I haven't seen a phone behave in the way you described other than a bad power button, if you ruled out all the known issues as stated in my previous posts then it would have to be a hw issue but hopefully it was just a bad power adapter, usually the first thing a user would do is rule out a dead battery before seeing what else could be wrong with the phone
So, I thought I knew what I was doing, but apparently not.
I tried flashing XYLON.
Now, the phone gets stuck on the boot animation. I've been trying to get it to work for the last 12 hours. It either gets stuck on the boot animation, or on the "Android is updating" screen. I can't even get into the hboot to boot into recovery.
Can anyone recommend a course of action to bring my phone back to life?

Hold down power until lights flash 7-10 times. Simulates a battery pull. Then push volume down and press and hold power button for 4-5 seconds, then release power while still holding volume down.. should go to bootloader. Sounds like your not timing it correctly

I've tried that.I kept it for an hour, let it go as far ahead as it would. ADB does not see it.
I agree, if you cant get Into bootloader its a timing issue. Try holding the power buttons until the capacitive buttons blink 7 times or so, when the screen goes black let go of power and press and hold only volume until the bootloader comes up. This way is almost impossible to miss.

RUU doesn't work. I can't get RUU to detect my phone. It doesn't boot up. It's stuck at the boot logo. And even if I leave it connected to ruu while i'm trying to reboot, or trying to get into hboot, it still doesn't detect my phone.

Well, I've already pulled my phone apart once to replace my broken screen. Which is why I'm suspecting it could be a hardware problem. Somehow. *sigh*
And I'm in. Finally.
I let the phone's battery drain completely. I pulled apart the phone, and pressed down on the volume + power pins/buttons directly. And I got into the boot loader.
I'm currently restoring the backup of the rooted stock rom I always keep on my phone storage.
Thank you everyone for your suggestions and support.

So my situation is similar but my htc inc s is brand new from ebay china seller ( I live in Greece), is s-on, never messed up with, never rooted all factory. It worked great for few days and after the first OTA update I cant get into hboot, adb doesn't see the phone, always the updating symbol on screen.Tried battery pull, volume down + power in all the possible timing and combinations but yet nothing! Also I tried battery pull, volume up + power it vibrates 3 times orange lid is on and black screen (on the forums is said that this is diagnostic menu). So I think maybe this phone is a refurb and not new since the answer from HTC global support (after sending my IMEI and S/N) is that this phone is for Indonesian market and that its warranty expired year ago! Can you help me in some way guys...

I was holding Power and Vol Down like on my DNA, turns out I had to hold Vol Up.
For some reason, I tried to boot into recovery from Goo.im and I wound up with a red "!". Holding the power for over 3 minutes did nothing. Holding Volume Up plus power put me back in business.
I've had that issue several times now where I was horsing around with xposed modules and rebooting and it would just freeze with the screen super dim and the Verizon logo just barely perceptible. Holding power forever did nothing. One thing I found that ALWAYS recovers it for me is holding power and volume UP for about 30 seconds. It hard resets it. Works every time for me.
I was starting to get scared too as I'm coming from The Galaxy s4 and am used to being able to battery pull.
