[Q] Is there an Android Equivalent to iPod Touch? - General Questions and Answers

Does anyone make an Android powered device that similar to an iPod Touch?
Before you answer, I do already understand that any Android phone with a touchscreen could do perform that function (you just don't have to use or activate the phone part). However, to be a real Android rival to the iPod Touch, it would have to have a battery life much greater than any Android phone (at least, any that I know about).
I ask because I'd like to have a couple of cheap (<$200) touchscreen Android devices to use as TV remotes in conjunction with the Redeye system (www.thinkflood.com).

Xperia live Walkman.....
Xperian using xda app

I have an extra incredible that I have been toying with trying to do something similar. I removed the phone and a bunch of stuff that hogs resources, stripping it down to the camera and music player and a few different apps. No idea how it is on battery yet though

I believe that Samsung is basically making a galaxy but without phone hardware ...

The samsung galaxy player 4" is $179 and the 5" is $229 both are better than an ipod touch and offer gps.. so car navigation plus full android.

Android tablets and support/customization?

At first I was in love with the iPad but now I've began thinking to go a much different route for a tablet..
after searching for android tablets I ran across two that caught my eye, one on ebay the sungworld 7in tablet and the Haleron iLet mini...
both feature similar hardware specs (same screen size, resolution, CPU speed, memory, price, etc). the main difference from what I can tell (aside from aesthetics) is the sungworld model looks like its running standard android 1.6 with gapps, whereas the ilet is running android with some UI.
does anyone have any input on how customizable these devices are? any chance of custom roms or app2sd or at least gapps on the iLet..would porting a version of 2.1 be considered impossible or at least not probable?
I love the idea of a cheap android tablet and would appreciate any input on this!
thanks in advance..

Have you looked at the enTourage eDGe?
I just saw your post on the other tablet thread..I'm not really a fan of the design, its very strange. Plus i already have a netbook, so I'm in the market for a tablet now..
Check out enso-now.com for the zenPad..its a pretty cool 5'' android tablet starting at $155!

How many of you actually use the IR sensor and Peel?

i wouldnt mind using it but since i can only turn on my tv, its basically useless. it doesnt work with my centurylink prism box. there is an update in the market but cant update it.
anyone here using peel to its fullest?
I have set it up with no problem (HDTV, Satellite DVR and Stereo Reciever) but didn't find any real use for it. Its just so much easier to use the universal remote that came with my dish. Also while it turns everything on with one click it doesn't turn everything off, have to do them all seperately.
Peel is just horrid, completely lacks a learn function or a means of importing definitions. A decent ir app that used the transmitter built into the 7+would be great. Possibly a LIRC based app - that would open many doors.

haven't use it at all... useless for me...
I use to use the Peel app before I got my 32" HDTV.
The only reason I don't use it now is because I would hate having to keep pressing input til it gets all the way down to hdmi 1.
Basically, it needs to be upgraded for the newer tvs.
Never used it...their support tells me that there is a bug with honeycomb and ir sensors. They said that the fix is ics and its up to Samsung to release it. Kind of a crumbly response if you're going to bundle a product and not support it.

I used it with a Samsung tv and lg tv no problems,
It also works with a old Sony DVD player I have,
Can't get it to work with the dreambox but this could be due to the custom firmware on the box,
Future support for sky boxes would be great...
Nope. Haven't touched it and no plans to do so.
I tried it out when I first got by SGT7+ and it worked - sort of - with my Toshiba TV and DirecTV. I haven't used it since. Actually I find it more trouble than it's worth. The IR sensor was not one of the reasons I got my Tab and didn't even come into play with my decision-making process. I could live without it quite nicely.
Never.
I think it is totally useless. Even I have couple of devices, but never use. I still can't understand why Samsung spent money to put this.
I also tried setting it up but couldn't get it to work with my setup. I am using Windows Media Center on an HTPC and all I could get it to do was turn on the TV. I like the idea behind it, but making it compatible with so many different setups is difficult. It would be interesting if Logitech bought them and integrated it with their Harmony line.
There use to be a damn good ir controlling software back in my symbian days... Psiloc ir remote i think... Used to control bunch of stuff using it...

I use it when I'm too lazy to get the remote from wherever it was left last. I have a 2yr old LG TV and Dish DVR. Doesn't work with my 16 year old Sony home theatre.

Repurposing an old CDMA Evo 3D

Hello guys... Actually I just want to ask you about a clever / non-santc alternative uses for an old Evo 3D... actually a friend of mine get this phone at an airport, and he can't return it to the owner, because he were going to another country, so, he gave it to me and I'm thinking about clever uses... by now, I've some ideas...
3D camera - Useful, and nice, but, I don't like the idea because I'll have the phone on the table waiting for a 3D moment...
PDA/Organizer - It would be nice, but I do have 2 android phones as well... so, I don't want to carry on with another source of information
Media Server / HTPC (Home Teather Android Device) - Maybe this use is my prefered, but I don't have any idea on how to start here... any thoughts on this?
I am open for suggestions...
Thank you....

GPS system for car possibly?
You can also use qualcom toolkit to modify/setup a port
To keep GPS lock without data signal so you save massive
Amount of battery. I'll provide a link to the thread <here shortly>
Also depending what phone you have now the evo3d has some
Badass hardware , meanrom ICS| anthrax 1.5 oc it out performs
My Verizon galaxy nexus LiQuid 4.1.1 | faux 1.8 MHz oc
I've been using a bad esn evo 3d for about a month now simply as a tablet. Gaming, organizer, essentially just a back up of everything I need.

Nice suggestions... maybe the GPS suggestion with Qualcomm toolkit is a interesting option... do you have any info on this?.
Somebody knows about a no-phone rom??? CDMA doesn't work in my country, so, I'll never use the phone HW... so I can use the hardware on many other ways.
As a tablet, maybe it could work for me, but I'll add another phone to my pocket (Galaxy GT-5500 / Xperia Ray)... also as a remote control (with droidmote) for a MK802 is a clever use too, so, I would be a clever use as well.
About other uses, I've bought a MHL cable, and I'll try to figure it out on how to install XBMC and use it as HTPC (kind off) and I'll talk to you as well with updates...
Another interesting option is Ubuntu... but I'll try to go deep on this, and I'll talk to you later...
I will be always hearing ideas.... thank you!!!
I would use it as a 3D camera. Use it as a PDA/organizer that just happens to have a 3D camera. I think the Evo 3D takes nice 3D pictures and video.

Samsung Smart TV hacked to run Android?

I'm tired of having my old droidx hosting the android video via hdmi to the samsung smart tv. Not sure its even possible but I figured id ask anyway as this is the perfect place to ask . Has anyone tried or has any info on getting android onto a samsung smart tv getting rid of that smart hub crap and turning the tv into a large tablet minus the touchscreen?

favi smartstick?
Already looked into those but that pretty much the same thing my old droidx is doing now.
Droidx > HDMI > TV
Would love to have the tv run android instead of that smart hub bs and not have to attach any extra hardware.

I'd love to do this as well! Hope someone finds a solution.
I'd love to see this as well. smarthub is nonsense
Samsung won't do it. It will stay as their own crappy Tizen OS TV.
After owning a Sony with Android TV I really wish there was an option to replace Tizen on my KU6300 & 8500, although Tizen is honestly a great OS for a basic user with the same speedy interface on their low end smart TV's as the high end it seems. I'm also surprised it's not common to replace the Fire OS on Firestick/Fire TV as that thing really is a total piece of crap. Laggy, complicated, full of useless suggestive pages that you are forced to dig through for your apps and then if your internet drops you can't even use PLEX or stream from a USB HD/Thumb Drive.

[Q] Verizon alternative replacement

Hello all, I was hoping for some help in deciding on an alternative replacement from Verizon Wireless.
I am on my 4th LG Revolution and it's time for an alternative replacement, and these are my choices.
LG Lucid 2 http://www.phonescoop.com/phones/phone.php?p=4077
LG Specturm 2 http://www.phonescoop.com/phones/phone.php?p=3726
Motorol RAZR HD http://www.phonescoop.com/phones/phone.php?p=3855
Short Version - Does anyone have experience they would like to share with these phones in the following categories? As it goes, I am leaning towards the RZAR, since I feel that it is a major player.
Call quality.
battery time.
Rooting/Rom-ing?
Media Control headsets
feeling of available support from others on these devices.
Long version.
My needs are podcast consumption, and I read a lot of forums so I have Tapatalk and Forum Runner installed a few times. I use Waze a lot when when I am in the car, and I snap a lot of pictures for writing howto's. Even with a few basic apps installed, the Revolution buckles and lags between app switching and home screens.
I Need my phone rooted for testing corporate VPN, connections. I am a fan of freezing, big-red's bloatware to speed up the phone. I work in IT so know that I have a tenancy to push a device to it's limits.
I did some research and processors in all of them are dual core. The Lucid is 1.2 GHz, while the razr and Spectrum a 1.5 GHz. My thoughts on that are that it will only matter in a year or so, if Ubuntu or FireFox phone OS is still available to play with. I would like to run Cyanogen mod again. (last ran on my OG Droid).
My thoughts are that the Lucid 2 and the Spectrum 2 are mid level phones, so I feel that the LG devices will have much less of a userbase here and on other boards. I am not a fan of the non-removal battery in the RAZR. My wife received that model for her Alternative replacement, she went through three of those before one would finally activate correctly.
I run my podcasts through beyondpod and I love it. I would like to find a phone that would respond to FF/RR controls on a multi button headset. I have had little luck finding info models that have been found to support FF/RW on a headset like the Nexus.
Go with the RAZR HD. Its by far the best on the list. Activation issues are a Verizon problem and/or SIM related so the HD probably wasn't the culprit. The only quality LG phone is the G2 so steer clear.
